Windows Firewall is ok or is there a better?

Is there a firewall better than the Windows Firewall?

The Windows Firewall is good.  W7 is better than XP.

There are other firewalls out there, but the main drawback is that they tend to be talkative, asking permissions etc. as a lot of people don't like.

In my opinion, if you have a good anti-malware program as MSE, have a good stand-alone backup anti-malware scanner like Malwarebytes Antimalware (free) and practice safe surfing, Windows Firewall will do the job.

Others may have other opinions of course, but that's what I use and have had 3 clean the computers for a long time.

When you have imported the registry key, you probably do not change the permissions on the registry keys.

    Reach

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE

    Right click on it -permissions

    Click ADD and type

    Everyone, and then click ok

    Now click on all

Below, you have the permission for users

Select full control, and then click ok

DO the same for the "reg" MPSSVC so key which also returns access denied.

Make sure also canceled to start service to invite you, he should be admin/elevated command prompt.

Also, you may need a system restart after changing the permissions on the registry key.

    I hope this helps.

  • There is more! ... Re: "could not start the Windows Firewall: error no. 5.

Member of the community of Windows 'rap2pac' has provided a working solution for many of his colleagues in the Windows community. who has managed to "Start" the service of WIndows Firewall except for 'my computer '! * * * *

My laptop FAS recently survived an attack of one of these "ransom of FBI virus". It took the comprehensive analyses of the, "AVG Free 2013"and "Security Essentials" of Microsoft to find and remove all four of the Trojans, who were in fact the active components of the "FBI virus".

There was also the necessary research in the 'register', "Temporary files" and the "user files" to locate and delete all newly modified and/or suspicious looking for folders, files, permissions or registry keys.

Unfortunately, after all signs of the virus seemed to be gone, I discovered that Windows Defender and Windows Firewall were the two people with reduced mobility. Windows Firewall wouldn't start and that's what brought me here... to find a solution.

I read on and is quickly realized that I was not alone. There are many other victims without Windows Firewall. I came across the answer of "rap2pac", which contained a solution that received "rave." I followed his instructions and applied to my laptop. When I clicked on "Start", to start the Windows Firewall service, a window has popped up with this alert message:

" ! Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service on the Local computer.

ERROR 1079: the account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process. »

I don't understand what that means. I am at a loss and my fuistrations have overexceded their limited storage space... "me!"  ... ;)

Please respond with any suggestions that you might have to help in the resolution of this problem.

    Thank you for your attention.

  • Windows Firewall is down all packets coming from a PPTP site to site VPN

I have a PPTP VPN site-to-site built with RRAS. The branch server is a Windows Server 2003, and the main Office Server is a Windows Server 2008 R2. Public profile Windows Firewall log shows that all packages of the branch are declining.

Curiously, I can access all the main office desktop computers.

    The configuration is:

    Main office:
    Network address: 192.168.0.0/24
IP address of the server: 192.168.0.3/24

    Branch:
    Network address: 192.168.1.0/24
IP address of the server: 192.168.1.1/24

I guess that both tunnels are ok because RRAS shows that interfaces are connected. Each PPTP server interface receives an IP address assigned by remote RRAS.

There is no set of packet filters.
There are firewall rules allow ICMPv4 inbound and outbound traffic.

When I try to ping 192.168.0.3 from the Branch Office Server, Windows Firewall records in the log of public profile:

    2011-09-28 16:10:44 DROP ICMP 192.168.0.102 192.168.0.3 - 0-0 0 - RECEIVE

where 192.168.0.102 is the address PPP assigned to the Head Office of RRAS.

Any help will be appreciated and very helpful.

    Thank you.

  • the Windows Firewall has stopped working

I tried the system restore to just before it stopped working

    Hi geoffrey,.

System restore would have been my first suggestion, so that was an excellent choice on your part.  I would try it again maybe a few days earlier just to be safe, he did not start before you really notice or before, it became clear, as it is certainly the simplest answer, but frankly, I doubt that it will be more effective (but who knows - he can come back works perfectly and we are both happy, it was considered).  He also suggested that you know a little about computers, so I can provide instructions that contain everything you need but I will not go into nauseous detail unless you get stuck on a step and then you should post any problem you encounter and I will provide more help.  If you should post, don't forget to answer as many questions and include both the results of the proceedings or reports or copies or screenshots of screen that you can at the same time, so we can work on what to do then if none of this made the turn.

How do you know if what she has stopped working?  Do you have an error message (if so, what was the full and exact message Word for Word, including all codes)?  You have more than one firewall installed on your system (like that which is part of Norton Internet Security, Comodo, or something else)?  What security programs do you use and that you have installed (all names and versions)?  What version of Windows you are using (for example, 32-bit Vista Business SP2 or other - please be precise otherwise)?  When this occurred and did you a software or a hardware changes (additions, deletions, upgrades or anything like that) since two weeks before the problem (if so, precisely what has been done in as much detail as possible)?

Do you get this Center security or firewall Windows itself?  If you are using XP, post back with answers given that there is a limit to the options how can I cover without knowing the basic information.  If you use Vista or W7, go to Security Center or action center and check to see if there is a problem with the notification of the firewall or it's on.  If it's not on, it shows the details or links containing information about the problem?  If Yes, go to these links and copy the information and post here, so we can look at.

Then go into firewall Windows itself (on the left side of the screen) and confirm that there is a problem.  If she too says it is disabled, click on change settings.  Make sure the firewall is turned on - if not turn it on, click on apply and then click OK and confirm that it starts and begins to work.  If it does not start, it provides an error message (If Yes, what is completely and exactly Word for Word with all codes)?  Click Advanced, and verify that all network connections are checked - make if all are not and click OK, then again try to turn on the firewall.

If this does not work, go to start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services and then highlight the Windows Firewall and click Open.  Click dependencies and go to each of them and make sure they are started and automatic.  Otherwise change it to automatic and start them.  If it is impossible to do, check their dependencies and do the same until you reach the end of the chain of dependence.  Now return to Windows Firewall and make sure that it is set to automatic and started.  Then restart.  When the system returns, return to the service and confirm that the Windows Firewall is started and automatic.

Now, go into Windows Firewall and again try to launch and see if it lights.  Go to the center of security or Action and check that the firewall is enabled and works.  If so, the problem can be solved.  Just to be sure, restart and check the firewall to ensure that it is on and working.  If so, who should be the one.  But we do not know why it stopped, and if the problem may come back, then we must redouble efforts to find the cause or confirm that there is no problem.  Moreover, if the above did not work and Windows Firewall is still off, here's what you should do in any case.

Go to start / Control Panel / administrative tools / Event Viewer and look for error messages regarding the Windows Firewall (there will be errors).  Look in system first and then in Applications.  When you find the error or errors, click on it for details, copy these details and display them in your next reply.  Well, they can help us identify the source of the problem and there a fix for it.

We will check your system and hard disk for corruption files and try to fix it:

Go to start / all programs / accessories / command prompt and right click on command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

, Type sfc/scannow go and let it run.  It will scan and try to the difficulty of some of your system files.  If all goes well he comes complete with no corruption, it could not repair (if it has these post of corruption here or try to analyze it to find the problem or files using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228.

While in the command prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run.  They tried to set itself to run at the next reboot.   Answer Yes and restart to run the program.  It will scan and attempt to resolve any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and remove especially as a potential cause.

Then, we will confirm this is not caused by a malware any.

Update and run a full scan with no matter what security software you use, and remove or quarantine everything you find.

First, try the following programs if you do not, because they can help. I recommend you download, install, update and run full scans with Malwarebytes:http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and SuperAntiSpyware:http://superantispyware.com/ and then run a full scan of Microsoft Security:http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx. This may or may not remove the infections, but will probably not correct the damage caused by them. Even if they or your current AV software seem to work or indicate that you are not infected, you should not completely trust in them and must continue with the recommendations that follow (so it's up to you if you want to try them first, or just ignore all this and get help from an expert you really need as described below).

Correctly and completely remove these infections can be complex and often require manual removal procedures (which may or may not be entirely effective either). Even if they work, I suggest what follows in any case, so that we can start it (you can ignore the methods above if you want it really is the way forward, but it won't hurt to them for trying).

Please follow these recommendations of JimR1 - MVP compliments:

You are running Microsoft Security Essentials?

If Yes: start here - https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/ and select the link that says - I think my computer is infected - and support and select the option for phone, chat or email (options vary depending on the region)

If you are in North America, you can call 866-727-2338 for a free Microsoft Help for infections of virus and spyware.

    Otherwise:

You can start here: https://consumersecuritysupport.Microsoft.com/ or here: http://support.Microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_virsec_master?WS=support#TAB0 for the help and support for malware infections.

If this does not work, or that they can't help, try one of the compliments of forums-remove malware following PA Bear - MVP:

I can recommend the assistance of experts available in these forums: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?Board=10.0 http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5 http://www.dslreports.com/Forum/Cleanup http://www.Bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php and http://Aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30

I hope this helps.  If none of this worked, then after return with answers to ALL the questions above (especially the first paragraph) and the results of all the procedures and the test that you tried in as much detail as possible and with two copies of reports or screenshots (as you prefer).  Without this information, we do not know where to go next without guessing or recommend a more radical proposal that may be required.

    Good luck!

  • Advantages, disadvantages of the use of 3rd party firewall vs WIndows firewall?

At the suggestion of PA Bear, I open this thread to learn about firewalls.

I have a Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro SP3. I use ZoneAlarms free firewall. It seems however, ZA conflicted with my WiFi USB NetGear adapter and threw me the network after about an hour (in one place, totally crashing the machine to a blue screen). At the suggestion of the PA Pooh, I unloaded ZA and activated Windows Firewall - no more conflict.

But I'm missing a couple of other functions, I had with ZA: - visual indication on the taskbar of traffic flow - permit/deny internet access to specific programs - completely locking all internet activity

So is a decent firewall program that offers good firewall protection AND these conflicts of WITHOUT Extras?

    Or:

Why should I stay with Windows Firewall and not look elsewhere for additional features?

    Ed

Hey, Joel. Thanks for the reply.

I liked the alerts because there seems to be a lot of things happening in the background that I had never heard. I enjoyed being able to see what was going on and kill him. "what do you say every time I open a file that you want to connect to the internet?"

The other part is that I use my laptop and more in environments where I don't have an internet connection I do in coffee shops where I have WiFi. I didn't want the constant slowdown of who-knows-what-and-how-many programs to make repeated calls for a connection.

Router? Everything I do is turn on my computer and plug my USB adapter and connect. (There's a guy at Starbucks, almost every day that comes out of three laptops and one buncha other things - it's his corner office!) I don't know what I'd do with a router - it's just me and my laptop and Starbucks (or elsewhere).

    Ed

    Hi Ed:

If you use your laptop frequently on the public networks, a third-party firewall is maybe a good option. I detect not just since your original post. You should look at the link below for a list of the popular options. Comodo, however, would be my choice if I had to use a.
