  I actually had this problem for a long time, but I'm just now to a point where I'm ready to take a lead in fixing it.

  I can't identify when it started, but Windows Vista does not start upward, with success of a full stop. This problem is quite recent, because before there is no pop up and there is simply no OS listed, so I still could not repair or restore in any case.

  -Before, when I was able to go into the advanced options on the Startup Repair disk (when he was not of "searching for Windows installations" pop up to stall on), I'd go to the command prompt in attempt to chkdsk/r C:.   Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

  At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.

  When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
