Continually says auto update this update is available, but after downloading and a Setup attempt is made, in a few seconds, it says 'Setup is complete. However, it is never appears on the updated list and continues to display on an automatic update.

  I downloaded the file 6001.18000.080118 - 1840_x86fre_wave1_ServicePackInstaller - FRMCSPI_cd1.iso from the microsoft Download Center, also I downloaded the Windows6 file. 0-KB936330 - x 86 - wave0.exe of microsoft and I want to install sp1 as operating system seprate for trial. also I do not have the default windows installation disc, is the price is too high for a normal user. Please tell me is it possible to install these versions separately.

  -Download and install the latest Windows Update Agent:

  -Download the stand-alone package for the Service Pack 1 from the following link:

  -Turn the computer in clean boot mode.
  Disabling/uninstalling security software installed on the computer, as appropriate.

  I have an old Windows XP home pc.  Not all programs/Windows utilities are available for some reason any.  Where can I find the Windows backup feature?  I want to save my data files.

  Windows backup is not installed by default on XP Home.  You can install it if you have a genuine Windows XP CD or if you download the full network for SP2 installation file: http://www.ntbackup.us/Articles/install-ntbackup-xp-home.htm

  I suggest, however, that you not install NTBackup, but rather get a cloning/disk imaging application.  What follows is not free, but you get what you pay for.  NTBackup has some limitations (on the one hand, you cannot use NTBackup to backup to the optical media).  NTBackup also is not used in Vista or Windows 7, but after much kicking and screaming, Microsoft made a utility to restore NTBackup for Vista and Win 7 for computers with these operating systems could at least read BKF files created by NTBackup.

  Ghost was the gold standard for imaging software, then became much less desirable, as well as with many Symantec products.  I understand that the current version is significantly improved.  Of the foregoing do not all have the same feature sets, but all should do a good job of backup and restore.  Some managers hard drive, such as Western Digital, do a version of one of these applications available for free if you use their readers.
