Windows XP can be installed on a new hard disk that is 500 GB?

The hard drive on my Dell laptop d 620 crashed so I bought a new one that is 500 GB.  The windows software that
has been installed on the computer is Windows XP.  My husband wants the same thing on the new hard drive. The old hard drive
has been 80 GB.  My family tried to install Windows XP on the new drive and tells me that it is not compatible with the
larger capacity hard drive.  It's not logical to me, but I'm not that computer savy.  Is this correct?  Thank you, Kathy

You need two things to support a drive larger than 137 GB:

1. a motherboard with a BIOS and a controller that supports 48-bit LBA supported (or alternatively, an add-in controller card that does).

2. at least SP1 of Windows XP.
