worth a Win7 update or 8?

I have an old 7yr T60 with XP Home and I would like to hear 'pros' if it is worth upgrading the OS. A computer-savvy friend recommended Win 7, but was not sure of the compatibility (and the age of the T60). What about just upgraded components to help with speed and efficiency? Everything I do is web-surfing, email and office stuff. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

  • Satellite C660 - 115 Win7 update stuck in the loop. SOLVED!

I have a Satellite C660-115 which is stuck in a loop "of despair".
I am a COMPUTER engineer support and a customer brought this laptop of mine, who was stuck in a loop of repair Win7 (64-bit prem) that simply says Win7 could not be repaired.

I backed up the profiles of subscribers using Hiren boot CD (done chkdsk as well - everything is OK), and then did a factory restore.
No problem at all with the restoration.

Started doing the updates for Win7; SP1 seems to install OK without errors.
The system then picked up 37 Win7 updates automatically and asked to reset.
Upon reboot, Win7 entered "drvload.exe" and started an auto repair.
It took time and the system started OK, but without any sign of SP1, looks so much like system restore to an earlier point?

I though this update to process 3 times now and each time after that a lot of auto update, the same sequence occurs.

How to exit this loop? What is causing this problem, which I have never seen before?

No software has been installed, other than that of the recovery process.
I even uninstalled McAfee, just in case this could be a problem - no change.

Ah, just took another look. It is stated in Win7 system registers that the restoration was caused by a corrupted file C:\ci.dll. Google to find it was a sign by a rootkit virus in the HARD Master Boot Record disk (the file ci.dll itself is NOT damaged). Found a fix tool

    http://support.Kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?QID=208280684

It identified the rootkit and removed.
    Seems to be OK now!

Hope this post could help others.
Of course, the factory restore does not erase the HDD MBR rootkit...

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Can upgrade only to win 10. Cannot download the Win7 updates

    Hello

Earlier this month following an upgrade of Windows 10 (Win10) was put at my disposal as well as updates of November for my Windows 7 (Win7). Because I am unwilling to upgrade to Win10 at this time, I hid the upgrade and began installing Win7 updates only.  Unfortunately, the updates will not install correctly.  Since there are to many updates of new Win7 (partial, listing in the exhibit no. 1), I started checking and installing a little at a time and restarted my computer if necessary.  It succeeded the first 2 attempts.  Then, no matter how few updates, I checked, they could not be installed.  The 'check-off' updates no longer appears on the page "Windows Update" to be installed (Ex. 2), only the Win10 upgrade is displayed.

I hope someone can help me.  Thank you.

    Room no. 1

    Example 2

Most likely the upgrade is under "Optional", you must hide the upgrade before getting updates. As long as Windows 10 is in the queue you can not get updates.

After that first, I tried the "update to stop service" and replace the "SoftwareDistrabution" folder and then I finished the above.  The two have not then I found this "KB947821.  She's not too, and I still get the same error.  Yes I am set up as an administrator.  I posted this in this article, but I guess that since he said no one will look at it again.  The problem persists.  I noticed that after using my wifes (also admin) profile also has a stateing error notices that updates could not be expected due to these operations were in use.  There is no open program so I guess once again, its operations of os it's referring to.  So if the operating system uses the normal programming to run, how to stop it and apply the updates?

    Thank you

Ok.  I spent the entire weekend of troubleshooting.  Like I said it was something I was missing.  It WASN'T a VIRUS.  The 1st question you should have asked instead of implying it's NORTON or that the system has been HIJACKED, was simply at the facility, the second, you activated the operating system?  I would have said no.  It was because of the wait to see if I could determine the cause of other issues.  Stupid I think MS would actually let the system work with activation.  This unfortuantley not solve the problem of 'network', which is persistent at the same intervals.

  • Win7 updates fail on the new X 230 notebook

Hi, I just bought new lenovo X 230 with pre installed win7 64 bit professional. My win 7 updates are downloaded and installed. However, after restarting the laptop, updates fail to set up, and the system returns to the previous state. And starts to download, and then again updates, and once again, I get the failure message... I also got new lenovo E530 with pre installed win7 home 64 bit. And I'm running into the same problems, it looks like a general problem with updates. I tried to fix it on the web from microsoft, which did not help.  Then I called lenovo warranty support, and they advised me to first install update KB2732500. I tried, installation of 2732500 succeeded however has not solved the problem of another failure of updates. Thank you very much for your suggestions!

  • Satellite R630 - 130 missing Webcam from the device after Win7 Update Manager

Computer laptop only 6 days in use. After that Windows 7 update integrated webcam just disappeared from the Device Manager and, as a result that does not work.

System just can not find. New drivers did not help, as well the default BIOS setting. I even restored the system 6 days back - nothing like Web camera in the Device Manager.

This problem is common on the Internet - but there is not a lot of information on Google.

    Any ideas?

    Hello

I really wonder why the OS cannot recognize the webcam?  :|
Generally, if the driver or the software is not installed, you should see an unknown device, but as I understand your message, even this unknown device is not visible.

What to say try upgrading the BIOS, I read somewhere in the forum that the BIOS update can be useful in such a situation.
If this is not enough, try the new OS installation (recovery of the laptop) and check if the webcam seems once again

  • A frozen (for more than an hour) when installing Win7 updates

During the installation of updates during a restart, IQ506 froze, although few 'circle' still rotating, for more than an hour so far.  Message says not to put off, but nothing happens.  Where should I go from here, if I am not in power down?

A few times just to give up and put off, I look at the HD indicator, if it goes 30 minutes without blinking I give him a strong power off, if the HD is flashing I will usually let it run all night

  • Satellite L500-125 - WIN7 update

    Hello

I have a SATELLITE L500-125, and I asked Toshiba Nl if I can get Vista to WIN7.
The 1st asnswer was as below:

We do not support upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7 laptop. When you are in possession of a license of Windows 7, you can download the drivers (if available) from our Web site:

Hey if Toshiba offers drivers Win7 is evidence that you run Win7 on your laptop.
I installed Win7 on old L300 and it works perfectly.

Install Win7, install all the necessary drivers, tools and utilities and everything will be OK.

  • Win7 update error code 643 KB 973688

Error code Win 7 643 for update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x 64 systems (KB973688). Must have tried 10 times at least. All I get is the error code and it can not install XML based Services. Have you tried system restore, but that did not help at all.  If anyone has a solution please let me know. A1. What program "At Microsoft fix it program" (e.g. KB971058)? I don't mention a "fixit" in any of my previous posts on this topic.

A2. It is assumed that you should not have deleted the content of...

    %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads
    <=this>

.. .alternance step 2 in my second reply to this topic.

In addition, if you had completed all stages #1 à #4 in my second response to this issue, Windows Update should no longer offer KB973688.

A3. It is quite possible that the preparation of updated system (or CheckSUR) tool had already been downloaded & run my Windows Update.

TIP: Read the Symptoms section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973688.

    (1) do you have an installed application that "uses Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) to process XHTML files" and (2) that "generates a lot of requests when it tries to retrieve well known from the definition of the Type of Document (DTD) from a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web server files" and (3) to "these redundant retrieval requests cause the W3C Server block requests DTD?

If you can't answer YES to all three of these conditions, you don't need to install KB973688 and steps #1-#4 in my second reply to this topic should prevent Windows Update from the offer.

Sorry, but I can't be any simpler than that. Yes, it's a little complicated, but it isn't either "rocket science". Good luck.

  • Win7 update will not install.

    How to ask a question
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/555375 >

It helps those answering questions if you provide:

what the version of windows (32-bit or 64-bit).

you use what browser (exact version).

what application anti-virus or security suite is installed and your current subscription?

    What third-party firewall

What anti-malware software can be installed.

What updates you trying to install? (Number of KB)

What error do you get everything when trying to install updates?

Please do it in your next reply.
