Xeon vs i7 cpu

I currently have an AMD Phenom II 965... now I try to make a new processor and Mo and im a little in a delema between Xeon E3-1270 and the i7 comparison. What is the best processor to run vmware... i7 Xeon or.

FYI... my plan is to use vmware workstation. Perhaps down the road pc could be converted into a full server with vsphere

Hi rneedham88,

You can check this link for the discussion on the i7 vs xeon processor:

http://www.Webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=925910

and this comparison of samples of i7 and Xeon processor:

http://Ark.Intel.com/compare/52214, 52276

Based on the discussion and your specifications, processor Xeon is best suited for your tasks which will mainly make the functions and activities of the server. Xeon processor has support for ECC memory and has the advantage over the larger L1/L2 cache. Outside the ECC support, Xeon also supports Intel® vPro Technology, virtualization technology Intel® Directed i/o (VT - d) and Intel® Trusted Execution Technology that would certainly increase the overall performance, particularly on virtualization.

So in my opinion, Xeon is the best way to go if you're in the activities of virtualization and server.

Best regards, Harold

  • Very high readings of temperature CPU of the Mac Pro 8-core 2007

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 updated to level with two Intel Xeon X 5365 CPU and firmware 2.1. The system has worked very well for months. However, I'm worried about CPU temperature readings. Assuming that the readings are correct, I have no explanation for the difference in typical 30 degree Celsius between the processor and the heat sink.

Is it possible, that the CPU exceeds their life expectancy?

During a stress test, I can see the following typical readings:

    CPU core 87 C / 189 F

    CPU a heatsink 58 C / 136 F

    B processor 91 c/196 F

    CPU radiator B C 59/138 F

I use new thermal paste Arctic MX-2 and tried various measures, including polishing of the surface of the CPU and the heatsink using sandpaper grain 1000. Nothing has so far had no effect on temperature readings. There should be enough good contact between the heatsink and processor during the installation, because they stick well enough to remove the heatsink again.

Max TCASE. According to the operating temperature -1333 http://ark.intel.com/products/30702/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5365-8M-Cache-3_00-GHz-MHz-FSB is 63 degrees Celsius.

According to http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/design-guide/5400-chipset-memory-controller-moyeu-guidelines.pdf the Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® 5300 series include a function of on-chip temperature sensor. The heat sink provided by Apple has a temperature sensor, which seems to be fixed directly on the coper plate that touches the CPU head spreader.

Given the following quote from the same document:

TIM's performance is sensitive to degradation (e.g. breakdown of fat) over the life of the processor because of the temperature of the phenomena of cycling. For this reason, measuring of the processor given TCASE value can decrease over time according to the type of material of TIM.

Anyone know if the IHS on the CPU is soldered or whether they used the thermal paste between the IHS and the die of a CPU? In the case, perhaps it could explain the current temperature readings.

    Any ideas? Thank you!

Your temperatures look a bit high, but not outrageous. The temperature measured on the Silicon of heat will be always higher than the temperature measured on the radiator. That's what the radiator is supposed to do, leads away from the heat to the fins, which would measure even more cool.

Your Mac allows to adjust speed of the fans to the top in a loop of feedback, founded the temperature of these measures. You can place a floor under your minimum speeds of fans. This can be done with the tool similar to some tool you already use, like the SMC fan control.

If the processors to exceed their safe operation temperature, your Mac will perform a sudden uncontrolled power off.

  • PowerEdge 2900 III support xeon x 5470?

I was wondering if someone can clear this up for me. Can the poweredge 2900 III helps the xeon x 5470 cpu?

The confusion around this for me comes from the dell documentation, I found on the poweredge 2900 III server that has she supports the xeon 5400 BUT at 3.16 GHz cpu series. The xeon x 5470 3.33 GHz is rated.

However I saw many times poweredge 2900 III running of x 5470. a quick search pulled up from a few ebay listings for this server with the same cpu. Could there was an update of the bios that allowed support for this processor, and dell documentation is just outdated?

So, due to conflicting information I see before I go and spend money, can anyone provide me a concrete answer on the question of whether I can run this processor or not?

Expired documents. The data sheet is dated September 11, 2007, the X 5470 was released in 2008. So there was a BIOS update to add support OR it has not been listed everything simply because it did not yet exist.

    1. There are systems with this CPU.

    2. they are sold by dealers known for this computer.

It can work in an III, and I recommend the update of the BIOS (and other firmware system) at the latest prior to installation.

I have an Optiplex 755 of sff with the q6600 and Im thinking about buying a mini tour with the q6600 as 755. I know that I can move to the q9650, q9550 or q9450, no problem. But what about the xeon x 3350, x 3360 x 3370 3380 x, x 3353, x 3363? Specifically the x 3363 because his 80w so I can use the hsf stock; and you can find them for really cheap.

I know that they are not officially supported by dell, but I saw references it will work online.

    And it would be a possible upgrade being the q6600 2.4 ghz, 8 MB L2, 1066fsb, 105w. 3363 x is 2.83 ghz, 12 MB L2, 1333 fsb and 80w.

  • VCA - Pentium and Xeon in the same cluster?

    Hello

I wonder if there is no problem of compatibility with this:

Course host ESX 2 using Intel Xeon X 3450 CPU

To add to another host, same hardware except Pentium G6950 CPU

I presume that CVO is necessary but would there be problems of mixing pentium and xeon?

    Thank you very much

You will not be able to vMotion between a Xeon computer host and a Pentium

These 2 CPU comes from a family full of different.

    http://ark.intel.com/products/43230/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G6950-(3M-Cache-2_80-GHz)

    http://ark.intel.com/products/42929/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X3450-(8M-Cache-2_66-GHz)

There will be problems if you add this host to your cluster, you will not be able to vMotion between 2 different processors

This will give you errors DRS

    HA will work well.

I would not recommend to perform this

  • Add 2 CPU

I add a 2nd CPU in a ProLiant DL380 G5 (there a Xeon Quad Core CPU installed) and take the memory from 16 GB to 32 GB of RAM.

Is there something I need to do it before or after I do the upgrade of equipment (other than to close all Vm down and the host operating system), in order to get Vmware to recognize the new CPU and memory?

Also I would like to install the upgrade patch 1 after and also I was wondering if there is anything I should do before or after the upgrade.

I watched the news of upgrade and I have seen no specific recommendations.

If the server's bios recognizes the new hardware, then ESX/ESXi should should not have any difficulty to see and to be able to use it.

I think you're talking about going to ESX/ESXi 4 u1, Yes? It depends really on what method allows you to perform the update on the host. You can try using the Update Manager or the Host Update Utility (if you have already installed or install and then use)...

  • PCI 3.1 ASUS USB to the Mac Pro running El Capitan?

    Hello

As the proud owner of a Mac ro 4.1 (updated to 5.1 and 2 X of Hexa-Core Xeon X 5670 CPU) I "suffer" a restriction.

And it is now old and really slow USB 2.0.

I would like to add a PCI USB 3.1 and I spotted the ASUS USB 3.1 PCI card.

Of course, this card is given only as compatible with Windows...

But I've seen a few reports of people claiming to have inserted this card in their Mac and have used successfully with several devices.

It seems that these reports are under "Yosemite".

I was wondering if they are always good with El Capitan...

I put the card in the Mac.

It seems to be recognized by the Mac Pro.

In fact looking at the system information, under "PCI" give "Expansion USB card".

    BUT:

    -No USB key I have insert mounts;

    -No USB stick plug mounts;

    -my mouse lights

    -the keyboard does not work...

    So I'm wondering if:

-El Capitan has got rid of the first USB support 3.1 to Yosemite?

    - Or if my card can be default somehow?

-If this behavior can be caused by updates, I made (Mac 4.1-5.1 online) + 8-Core CPU-online 12 Core CPU?

If anyone would be able to help me, I would be eternally grateful :-)

If so, the card can be sent to the seller...

    Kind regards.

    FRED

    Hello

Replying to myself: the card is functional.

And the material is not at fault.

    How will I know?

Simple: my Mac can dualboot on Mac or Linux Debian.

So I just started in Debian on the same Mac Pro.

Guess what? Without having to install any additional software, the card USB 3.1 is perfectly recognized under Linux.

To remain decent, I will remain silent and will not say what I think Apple tries to limit the use of their devices without the need of technique to do so.

I will now try to start to Yosemite to see if it allows me to use the card.

    Kind regards.

    Hello there Penguiner.

Looks like you bought the ASUS USB 3.1 PCI card and questions about its compatibility with your Mac Pro. The following Knowledge Base article speaks to the maps provided by Apple which have been tested and work with the Mac Pro:

On the compatibility between Mac Pro-carte models graphics

Since the ASUS card is not listed, the reference of the article could be a good recommendation to follow:

This article applies only to video cards that originally shipped with a specified Mac Pro or upgrade kit have been offered by Apple. Similar maps that are not provided by Apple may have compatibility issues and you have to work with this card provider to confirm compatibility.

Thank you for reaching out to the communities of Apple Support.

  • VCA with processors different hearts?

    Hi all

My Cluster have four hosts ESXi with model CPU = Intel (R) Xeon E5645 of CPU @ 2.40 GHz-6 carrots. I need to add our existing stand-alone HP DL380G6 servers in the same cluster. Model of processor for the HP DL380G6 Server = Intel (R) Xeon CPU E5530 @ 2.40 GHz-4 nuclei. I know CVS remove UC has top model and create the line basis for the CPU features that are available in all of the central units and I don't know how CVS works with different physical cores of the processor? Please suggest me.

VCA or vMotion compatibility in general cares not at all on the number of cores that physical processors of your have. The layout is completely hidden from the guest, then it does not matter in a perspective of VMotion if you mix 4, 6 or 8 core hosts in a cluster.

However, what really matters, is the generation of CPU and the instructions of the respective most recent processors have as opposed to the previous.

Your Xeon 55xx processors belong to the family of Nehalem, whereas the 56xx are part of the Westmere family. Virtual machines running on processors 56xx natively (without CTS configured) or with Intel Westmere VCA base will not be able to be vMotioned on 55xx hosts.

So, you'll need the level of reference VCA of your cluster to the generation of Intel Nehalem.
