Add 2 CPU

I add a 2nd CPU in a ProLiant DL380 G5 (there a Xeon Quad Core CPU installed) and take the memory from 16 GB to 32 GB of RAM.

Is there something I need to do it before or after I do the upgrade of equipment (other than to close all Vm down and the host operating system), in order to get Vmware to recognize the new CPU and memory?

Also I would like to install the upgrade patch 1 after and also I was wondering if there is anything I should do before or after the upgrade.

I watched the news of upgrade and I have seen no specific recommendations.

If the server's bios recognizes the new hardware, then ESX/ESXi should should not have any difficulty to see and to be able to use it.

I think you're talking about going to ESX/ESXi 4 u1, Yes? It depends really on what method allows you to perform the update on the host. You can try using the Update Manager or the Host Update Utility (if you have already installed or install and then use)...

  • Add additional CPU licenses to host

I have a host of 4 shooting, a business licence 384G of RAM and more.  The server owner added an additional 128G of RAM to the host.  My understanding of the new license model, I need to add an extra 2 CPU licenses to the host to take full advantage of the newly added memory.  I can't find where and how to do it.  Any help on this would be appreciated.

VRAM licenses are not tied to the physical memory in the ESXi host, but the virtual memory assigned and used by the virtual machines - this document will nadine you information on how to vRAM and how to check it- http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2000935

Depending on your environment - if you vCenetr you would add it to your vCenter Server - uf you run a stand-alone ESXi host you use the vSphere client and go to licensing features in the configuration tab

You can save this script in a .ps1 file.

After have connected you to the vCenter (Connect-VIServer), you run the script from the prompt PowerCLI.

    .\myscript.ps1

It will read all the guestnames that you stored in the .txt file and for each of these calls to the function.

If you need to address another group of guests you modify the contents of the .txt file and run the script again.

  • Change of that flag - hot virtual CPU add

    Hello

I'm trying to build an application that will add/remove of CPU and memory to a machine virtual a VApp.

I currently have the code to add.

What I need is to understand the options 'Add a virtual CPU hot' and 'Hot-memory add' how to define those who through the API? And do I need to change in order to add new CPU/memory?

    Thank you

    Hen

    Hi Henrique,

Basically the virtual CPU/memory hot add means that modifing the number of CPU / memory of the virtual machine, the virtual machine is running.

In the API, you don't need to set options to do - simply start the virtual machine and to try to change - even as usual editing operation.

Note that are are some requirements to perform "HOT ADD" operations, so if some of the requirements is not fullfilled "hot add" operation will fail. For example, this feature is added in VC 4.0, so the version of the VC on which runs the cloud must be at least 4.0 VC. For other requirements on the add feature hot, you can refer to the location of the following link:

I hope this helps! Please write if you have questions.

  • addition of CPU/memory for desktop computers in composer linked clone pool

    Hi all

I want to add more CPU/memory for desktop computers in a pool of composer linked clone but I want to build a pool of test out changes first, while the production area is still in place. Can you screw with virtual material in the main image and then take a snapshot and build the pool of test out of it without him bring the clones in the production pool?

I think that the process would be as follows...

    1. modify the parameters of material on the main image of Win7

    2. run the main image and let it recognize the CPU and additional memory (probably needs to restart the CPU I think)

    3. close the main image and take a snapshot

4 create a new pool of test off the coast of this new snapshot

    Thank you!

Yes it may seem straight, it won't cause any problems. If you want to be very careful with your prod environment, you can just clone the base image and make your tests on it.

  • Command to change CPU and carrots

I am trying automate cross country the number of processors and Cores for a virtual computer when recovered by SRM.  Currently, it is a manual operation when you test a recovery plan which has a virtual machine with 2 x 6 core CPU.  We must go and change to 4 cores instead of 6 for the virtual machine can be powered on the recovering site.

    I tried this

    Get - VM WEB1 | Set-VM - numcpu 1 - confirm: $FALSE

This makes only 1 CPU, although I have 6 hearts, its core would be only 1.  Also, I get an error when you look at the parameters of the machine virtual recovered, something to the effect as 'the number of hearts should exceed the number of processors' which is wrong, I have a lot of single CPU, multi-core VM in my environment.

I tried numcpu - 2 or - numcpu 4 and neither touch the basic configuration, so the machine does not illuminate.

Looking for a single line I put in my script that modifies the memory to no longer run my site of DR 'spare tire '.

My question is how can I change the number of virtual sockets and the number of virtual sockets and not! the total number. (as I said, if I change the total number it does not match [for example: change the number of cpu at 5, but number of virtual sockets = 2 then I get an error])

I also remove the NETWORK card that is used to set up and create two new NETWORK cards. If I do not fill the MAC addresses, will be ESXi automatically generate the MAC address during the first use of the virtual machine?  (The virtual machine will be exported and used on different computers.)

  • Add support for multiple base in comments

I have an existing windows 7 x 64 reviews of company I want to add more CPU cores to.  I followed the document of http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1010184 and the amount of carrots to 2.  Right now I have a single vcpu, so I expect to see the two graphs in the Task Manager, but I did not.  I have only one.  In addition, Device Manager displays only one processor, and when I run wmic > cpu, I confirm that NumberOfCores is 1.

I have triple checked to make sure that I spelled cpuid.coresPerSocket is correctly spelled and everything.  No idea why is seems these additional cores will not activate in the guest OS?

    ESX 4.1.0 502767

    Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise x 64

(also tried on Windows XP Pro SP3)

    Thank you!

The number of vCPUs that you configure is the total number of cores in the virtual machine.

Example: If you want to configure a virtual machine with two dual-core processors, set the number of vCPUs to 4 and CoresPerSocket to 2. CoresPerSocket devides only the vCPUs configured to present as multi-core vCPUs guests.

  • Alert - the virtual machine CPU usage

A virtual computer that is running Windows 2000 reports almost every day an alert on "use of the processor of the virtual machine.

According to my knowledge, add a CPU to a Windows 2000 Server is not easy as with recent versions of Windows, is correct?

The 5.0 ESXi host is not CPU ovrloaded, so I don't think that adding a CPU reservation can change anything...

  • Resize the VM disk and hot add drive to vCloud Director?

    Hello

For the moment you can add hot cpu and memory added to warm to a virtual machine in vCloud Director. Two features. But from a management perspective, I'd rather have the ability to add the drives and disks of VMS in extension hot hot. Extension of discs and adding disks on the fly is a very common practice in vSphere.

Someone at - it an entry about it? Can it be done through the API? What is on the roadmap for a future version of vCloud Director?

Yes it is possible using the vCloud API, take a look at this blog by Jake Robinson post that shows you how to use the vCloud new cmdlets Director - http://geekafterfive.com/2012/02/24/vcloud-apigui-throwdown-part-2/

  • much more 2 cpu license

    Hi all

I have a license issue. I have 2 servers with a single processor on each server 6core. each server has 64 gbb total ram = 128 on both. If I buy more essential is ok with the ram? because he said that 32 GB per CPU license more essential. Do I need to add other cpu on each server to complete 32gbx4cpu = 128 gb?

    Welcome to the community,

the vRAM in vSphere 5 is pooled by the vCenter Server for all guests. Because Essentials kits are delivered with 6 licenses processors, you can have a total of 192GB vRAM on all hosts.

It is recommended or any negative impact? and in the case where I experience any performance issue would add more cpu, the problems that I could wait here?

  • CPU pegged at 100% in the guest operating system

    Hi all

New to this forum, so I hope I'm posting in the right place. Note that I'm not our VMware admin, but rather, I have a server I have to admin that has been converted to VM via the P V. apparently process, our group has converted nearly 50 PMs successfully and of course one of mine is the only one who has a problem now. We have a custom application that has been developed to synchronize data between ESRI GIS and databases SAP. The code is about 7 years old and runs on a version of Oracle (9.2) and is Java based, both on the same vintage. It is not possible to upgrade by the creator going out of business and not having is not the source code. I ask this to understand that the problem is probably with the programming, but thought it was worth it.

Anyway, one of our guard batch process fail with a Java out of memory error on the virtual machine. It works well on the PM. A consultant ran the diagnosis with a Profiler memory on the virtual machine and concluded that the program never went beyond 256 MB and we have 1 GB allocated to the guest. We now consider the CPU issues. The only other thing we know is different is a matter of hyperthreading (HT). The PM is certainly HT'd (1 physical CPU showing that 2) and it does not appear that this setting met on the virtual machine. When you run the package on the PM, we see 2 CPUs in the Task Manager, and neither hits 100% for more than a few seconds for the whole process. On the virtual machine, we see a flatlined CPU and it is 100% most of the time until it fails about 15 min in.

The sysinfo on the virtual machine shows a 2400 MHz CPU, while the PM shows (2) 3400 MHz CPU (due to HT). I checked all my other virtual machines, and they are all 'show' 2400 MHz, so this must be a virtual standard machine type? I think that the virtual computer guest has access to the CPU ramp according to the needs, but then I'm not clear why the task manager would show that he attached the entire lot? It is likely that task manager prompt indicates whether flatlined to 100% of a 2400 Mhz CPU, even if she isn't really the most? If this is really the most, our admin should not be able to increase the dedicated CPU (I looked at the console with him and did not see an obvious option for this)? Is it possible to enable hyperthreading on the * comments * OS to mimic what has had on the PM? We cannot add another CPU to the guest due to licensing issues. Oh yes, the guest operating system is windows server 2003 and VMware ESXI 4.1 server. Thank you very much!

    G

The speed of the CPU that you see is the speed of the physical processor in ESXi hosts. You cannot increase this speed, however - licensing - usually, you can assign two vCPUs, virtual machine as a dual CPU core instead of 2 processors. This option has been added to ESXi 4.1. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1010184 for more details.

What you need to do is to set the number of processors to 2 and add the advanced parameter cpuid.coresPerSocket = 2.
