XPS boot SSD 8900

I am trying to replace the hard drive on my desktop XPS 8900 with a SanDisk SSD.  When I boot the system I get an error screen that says: "Hard Drive - disk error found. The attention! Hard drive or optical drive not found' However, when I hit "continue" on this screen, the system boots fine and works like a charm.

I saw a firmware SanDisk SSD update on downloads.dell.com... I downloaded it, but the zip file seems to be password protected and there is not a password in the instructions on the dell site.

It's very frustrating

Thanks Z4ko, I fixed it and I am operating. The sata0 has blue into the connector on the motherboard, so I moved that to sata4 here is what I did.

Unplug the HD and entered Bios pulled the RAID for UEFI

boot from Win 10 stick of mem and loading in the SSD 256 in Sata5 card m2 on the mother, charge card win 10.

Restarted fine I'm now running on the SSD.

re - connect now connected HD Sata4 tried to start and received the error "a required device is not connected or is not accessible."

handed on in the bios and disabled secure boot

restart on SSD ok and seen HD, format, would lead letter, etc... everything is good.

went back into the bios and re-enabled secure boot.

All right.

    HELLO there once more. Dell XPS 410, Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. 4 GB of RAM. Updated for the reader to boot SSD and 500 g WD HDD. Sapphire Radeon video card update.     3, 4 is a RAM error. If carefully Reseat all memory modules in their slots.

    If this does not help, remove all modules except location 1. See if it works with a couple of reboots. Then trade all modules in slot 1 and test. If they all work in location 1, add a module to not slot 2 and test until all modules are resettled and no problem neither you ID a bad location.

    If one of them fails in slot 1, you will need to replace it as a pair.

  • XPS 420 will not again boot SSD

    I have a XPS 420 with BIOS A07. I bought a Samsung 500 G 850 EVO SSD. I used the software included to duplicate my existing HD. It worked without problem. I then installed the SSD, went into the BIOS. I found the place where I had to define SATA2 port where it is plugged into the motherboard, for on. After the reboot, I went into the BIOS and when I select SATA2, it now offers information on the SSD. I also see it in Windows Explorer. However, I don't see an option to make the boot drive. There is a section on the Boot order in BIOS, but it lists all SATA drive. It does not specify which.

    In addition, in the section on SATA there is no AHCI option. Just ATA SATA or RAID. I found the instructions on the Web to enable the AHCI in the registry for this computer. I followed the steps and was able to change two settings by following the instructions. Check back shows them as changed. But AHCI still does not appear as an option in the BIOS. How can I make my new SSD boot drive?

    Looks like I may have found a solution, although I'm surprised that it worked, and perhaps something else is what actually works. I had assumed that the number of SATA port on the motherboard has no importance. But just in case where SATA0 was faster and possibly solve the problem, I moved my SSD to SATA0, my old HDD to SATA1 and SATA2 DVD player. I went into the bios to activate SATA0, which I had previously turned off as the old hard drive is plugged it and always started for her. I have saved and let it start and of course it is initialized to the SSD. I then restarted and went into the BIOS and made sure that he considered every car on the SATA port, and that each has been activated. Everything was going as planned and he continued then to start on the SSD. The old drive appears in Windows Explorer under E. The DVD player works, as well.

    I guess most of the people must not do this, because they can set the boot sequence for the SATA via the BIOS drives. But since I could not, it seems, this method worked, and going in the order the SATA ports. And it's probably just as well use SATA0 for my SSD just in case it is faster. My guess is that all SATA ports are the same and slow in this old Dell. But it works and I'm happy.

    I'm surprised that there are no answers to my questions or problems. I guess that my Dell is too old. However, I thought that I would get something from the community. Until about five years ago, Dell had a different provider for their forums with lots of participation. I think that the provider has been appointed the lithium. It seemed that when they changed providers people were disappointed and veterans left.  In any case, I hope that my experience will be useful to someone. I can't be the only one running from these computers. And now with this SSD running, I will continue to do so for some time more.

  • XPS 8700 SSD Boot - make it stick

    My 8700 XPS came with Win 7 Pro preloaded on the hard drive and a red recovery disk media 8.1. Successfully, I installed a Samsung EVO 250 GB HD, connected to the SATA 0 and installed 8.1 on it. This works.

    However, I can't the BIOS to use the SSD drive under the 1st boot device. Unless I press the F12 key during startup and then select the SSD drive, by default it keeps looking for the hard drive.  The SATA operation mode is "AHCI" (which has been set by default already).

    How can I get the BIOS to recognize and use the SSD as default boot device?  Thank you!

    I am pleased to hear that the installation went well. In the BIOS there should be a section that defines your system boot devices. This is where you define the SSD as drive bootable. If you use UEFI, then of course you must select to start in UEFI from Windows, and you can set this option.

    Generally, I recommend that you set the system drive as the second boot device and chip set USB as the first.

  • XPS Desktop PCIe 8900 close question

    I am trying to add 2 small PCIe cards for the 8900 XPS running WIndows 10.  One is for IEEE1394 Firewire support, the other for additional USB ports because the front youssef for Firewire also has USB ports, so might as well use them.

    My problem is that when I install these 2 cards PCIe and plug a power cable between one of the spare SATA cables & PCIe cards every time I try to stop Windows 10 system restarts instead!

    VERY irritating!  In almost 50 years playing with computers I have met a great many who refuse to start when you want, but not very many, who refuse to stop!

    (I checked in Device Manager and none of the devices are set to wake the computer)

    I was hesitant to try this after spending 2 days to finally get the disc system transferred and works correctly on a SSD and not sure how that can be incurred.

    However, the problem seems now to have been resolved!

    Both cards PCIe, I was working on that said that no additional drivers on Windows 10 did, Windows will take care of this fine - BAD!

    Then Device Manager I noticed the drivers to use & then uninstalled the drivers for the new cards.  Then run the drivers supplied by the manufacturer & rebooted the system.  Device Manager recontroler that shows exactly the same drivers installed after the reboot.

    But - then when I stopped it all worked normally and has done for the last two days!  So presumably manufacturers drivers did something for WIndows drivers.  Or maybe even something for the cards themselves?

    Hi I am trying to install an SSD for my XPS 435MT PC.  Samsung 830 series.  I need but the PC in AHCI mode.  My bios doesn't have SATA or Raid.  Technical support Dell says to select SATA.  I select the SATA in the bios disconnected all other HD and connect the SSD.  A clean installation of windows 7. I have not seen any improvement in my system.  A ran the landmarks window and if the same results as my hard drive. A ran Samsung Software Wizard to optimize the drive and the operating system.  He keep reports that PC was not in AHCI mode.  Is there another setting in the BIOS I missed.  I have to do a manual tweak for Windows 7.

    I just got a Samsung 850 Evo 120 GB SSD installed today on my Dell XPS 435MT. My Setup was a single 500 GB HDD with about 100 MB partition for windows C:, E: recovery partition and a D: big data partition
    I followed the basic process has been
    1. Install two software provided by Samsung
    2. Shut down the system.
    3. Disconnect the DVD player and plug the SSD instead. I did it mainly because I don't have a spare SATA cable. I'll have to buy one soon. For now, I used my DVD / BD drive since I almost never use the player.
    4. In the BIOS, I changed IDE RAID, but which caused a reboot so I changed it to the way it was.
    5. Started in Windows as usual and did the cloning using the migration software, I installed in step 1.
    6. Cloning overcome in 11 minutes for about 40 gigabytes of disk C:
    7. After cloning, I was prompted to restart
    8. In the BIOS I put the SSD - fundamentally changed the boot sequence starts
    9. Restarted
    10. My SSD Windows is running. My old Windows partition was placed under C: to F:. New windows of my SSD received the letter of C: drive
    11. Did a check on the performance
    12. I got a number around 180 MB/s and about 250 MB/s for reads and writes respectively
    13. At performance tuning and optimization of the BONE
    14. Now, reading and writing is far beyond the real specs. I get 2500 and 2100 respectively. I still see the magician telling me that I should be in AHCI mode. I don't know what will happen if I try to put in a RAID. At step 4 I tried, but Windows wouldn't start. System should restart every time.

    I am satisfied with the improvement of the initial performance I see.

    It took me just 1 hour to do the foregoing.

  • Intend to upgrade my z620 with a boot SSD disk (and maybe a new series of processors) - advice?

    Much as I love my z620, having a SATA boot drive is painful, once you have become accustomed to instant gratification of SSD.

    I plan to buy an Intel SSD and a stand-alone version of of64-bit Windows 7 to go with it. My plan is to do a clean install of the operating system and applications on the SSD (assuming that I can make it work). Is this what I need to know it's HP Workstation specific in order to complete this upgrade? I guess I need to enable the AHCI in the BIOS (J61 v03.69).

    Another question - I currently have two UC E5-2620 (these are the Xeons V1). I want to upgrade these high V2s of range at some point in the future. I think that systems with older BIOS are not able to upgrade, but I think that my installed BIOS is a newer version (end of autumn, 2013).  I agree that any upgrade would be at my own risk and I would like to get the thoughts of others about the feasibility of this.

    First of all, at this later date of starting block that you provide in your second post it seems that, like you can make v2 upgrades.  There is the old 1 1 most recent trunk block versions of the motherboard Z620 date and you can search in the forum here to say from the BIOS easily if you have the original or revision 1 motherboard.  I think that you already know the answer on that.

    This is important: I hope that you have the original SATA drive it HP supplied with the workstation.  Which is a HP Recovery partition which you can see on disk management in the Device Manager.  This partition, you can create optical disks or even a bootable USB key that will allow you to rebuild from scratch a clone of the W7Pro64 which should / could come from the factory.  Who is a clone facility and has this title the OEM W7Pro64 COST so that it activates.  It's a generic COST.   You don't need to spend 140.00 to get W7Pro64... you have probably already under the terms of your purchase Z620.

    The value of this COST is that you can clean reinstall that way and a clone of your new installation can be imaged and even placed on an another Z620 and it will activate it too (be sure to respect the conditions of use for such things).  Because it's the OEM COA clone in question here you can make clones/backups with ease.

    You can do your own build directly on a new SSD at this "Recovery" approach, and the installer will know what to do.  You should already have your emulation of BIOS SATA RAID value + equivalent AHCI... for sure you want that, to get the benefits that come with the new SSD SATA/readers.  A generation of SSD Z620 we have recently received from HP has a C400 Micron 256 GB SSD from the factory.  I got older versions of HP of this SSD of eBay, made a low level of DBAN reformatting, so a format NTFS (long type) and updated the firmware to the same level as that on this new SSD HP (070 H).  There is a firmware update HP to do this with, which works very well.  You need to do the update with the HP update if it's an HP OEM SSD.

    Finally, there are different converters for the SSD is a form factor 3.5 "2.5".  HP has some devices "slide-in" way too expensive for this ("tool-less"), but I posted here on the HP screw equivalent which has exactly the same interface of BlindMate to sheets of data/SATA power of Z620 than mesh disk drawers with... Search eBay for "hp 2.5 to 3.5" and these work perfectly in the Z620 therefor.»  It is now my favorite device.

    Just installed Windows XP on my OCZ SSD that was installed in my desktop pc. I used it on my pc Windows 7 to start XP just to play a few games that will not work under Windows 7. I removed the SSD drive and now use it on my laptop Y560. The drive works fine and I can read and write to it without any problems. Then, I tried to boot from it again so I added the eSATA port in the startup configuration in the Bios Y560. When using the F12 key to select the drive it flashes to the Windows XP splash screen and then display a windows stop error message and restarts and then go back to my Windows 7.

    I'm looking for answers for a week now, but nothing I've tried has helped at all! I know that maybe someone had this problem and any help would be great.

    Windows xp runs on sata Ide mode. You will have to change the sata mode in the bios to ahci Ide to start for win xp and need to change back to Ahci to startup in Windows 7. There is a driver ahci for windows xp that you can install after windows xp in ide mode is started and if all goes well after that start windows xp in ahci. AHCI driver

    It was just one example of the rear connectors. We have never tested SSD in this model, that's why I said, "in theory...". ». It is unknown as to how the system BIOS would identify an SSD or whose size, it could use.

  • Dell XPS 15 SSD NVMe slow after updating the firmware July 2016 and papillonné CPU (Core i7)

    I noticed a huge performance drag after updating the firmware and drivers of my XPS 15 9550. The update took place August 4, 2016.

    Performance of my usual applications (Chrome, development tools and IDE, etc.) is dramatically lower. In general, I would say that things take about 3 times as long to arrive. I checked the CPU (normal), but also memory consumption (as normal) to discover that the problem is with the SSD drive.

    On this laptop: 500 GB NVMe thnsn5512gpu7 NV (toshiba). Attached are the results of a benchmark with AS SSD. All write speeds are appalling, to say the least... that explains a lot, but I have no idea how to solve this problem, and whether or not it really relates to the latest firmware + update drivers provided by Dell.

    (Note: I checked the BIOS, it seems that the SSD is currently configured in RAID mode.) Never touched this option before.)

    Any idea? Other affected users in a similar way. Thanks in advance.

    I managed to get the performance back by going to the properties of the disc and turn off windows write cache flushing heat. The two boxes should be checked. Write speed then went to about 1400 MB/s.

    I recently bought a refurbished XPS 8500 SE, which came with a 2 TB HARD drive and a 256GB SSD installed. However, it doesn't seem like the operating system is installed on the SSD, so it starts at a speed of HARD drive enough average, which is not what I expected.

    I'm not an expert but I looked around and gleaned that the 8500's SSD is configured to be used as a cache, which is not how I want to use mainly, I prefer to use the SSD as a real SSD drive, so that I can have a fast startup time and also to install important and active applications to it for quick recovery.

    No, Dell did put the score out there, there are a few other threads where to tell the guys at Dell, and it came in the box with this partition on the SSD drive. He has been blocked so that it could not be easily erased.

    But I managed to delete the partition without formatting the drive. I messed with the permissions up to what I've managed to delete and then expanded the other partition on the SSD so that now I have a literally 100% available 2 TB drive and 256 GB SSD is only occupied by all 60gbs.     Please open the Intel RST and check if your SSD is used as a cache. If this is the case, the answer to your question is no, you cannot save files on the SSD drive.

    I have a Pavilion p6310y (under Win 7 64 bit home premium) I added an Intel 40 GB SSD for.  I would like to boot from the SSD drive.   The recovery disks that I created will not work with a different size disk (the player to the factory is 1 TB) and I was wondering if there is a way to use the existing installation of windows 7 HP to create a solution?

    Reduce the footprint of your current hard drive 40 GB below!  You may or may not need another external hard drive in order to facilitate migration.  Use a disk product like Paragon Hard Drive Management Suite of Imaging.  You can also burn a WinPE boot disk to facilitate the process. I got my HD on my e9280t up to 32 GB as follows:

    1. disable System Restore

    2. disable hibernation

    3. delete all the necessary applications and migrate the data on the hard drive.

    Now reboot and defragment the hard drive. Reduce your C partition down to below 38 GB using W7 disk management or imaging software features.  You may not be able to migrate the recovery partition, as it is the 8-9 gb.  When you use imaging software, you will notice that you have three partitions. 'system or reserved', C and recovery.  You need the 'system or reserved' and C partitions.   Now, you can try image (copy) the required two partition and the mbr directly across the SSD.

    Once you get the SSD mounted, turning and imaged, then you are ready for a test. You can hit the ESC key on the blue HP screen during startup and select your boot device or go into bios and change the boot order and put the SSD at the top of the list of boot devices.

    If you have only one HD, then you have room inside for mount the new SSD, but you'll need a sata data cable and adapter support.  You must have a spare hard drive power cable but get one before you start.

    If you prefer to go with an external SSD (not mounted on the inside), will need you the following:

    1. an external hard drive (probably 2.5 ") box. You will need a power of cube or buy a box that has a round plug to USB port. ($20 35)

    2. a support extension sata to extend an open port sata (cheap) motherboard

    3. a data cable of stata (cheap)
