I have XP and that you want to upgrade to XP Pro, but Windows will not let me.
My office recently crashed and I replaced the windows XP home that came on the machine. I also have a copy of XP Pro upgrade that I want to install because pro allows me to office remote host and does not House. These are both legally purchased copies. When I try to upgrade to pro it won't let me and warned me that the original desktop version is newer than the upgrade. I don't like the age I want the features I paid for the upgrade.
All solutions?1. determine what service pack is now installed (right click on desktop and select properties). You must have service pack 3, but if you have recently reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition, you may have neglected to update at this point.
2. either consider that if you have a CD for an earlier version of Windows (98, Me, 2000), you can do a "clean install" of XP Pro by booting from the CD-ROM to upgrade XP Pro and then insert the qualifying product CD when asked.
3. If you want to 'upgrade' to protect the applications and data already installed on XP Home, first back up your data (just in case). As indicated in the error message, your upgrade installation CD must be equal or superior to your current installation of XP Home service pack level. Compare the service pack level of your installation of XP Home (see 1 above) and the level of service pack of your XP Pro installation CD. Then create a CD slipstreamed that combines the real CD XP Pro you have with the correct service pack. There are many instructions for this on the web. See http://lmgtfy.com/?q=slipstream+xp
I suggest that you use nLite (see the first hit in Google search above).
If your XP CD Pro has NO service pack, you must first integrate the SP2 and then sp3 wake in this.
If your CD of XP Pro at service pack 1 or 2, you can integrate service pack 3 (for example, you can go from 1 to 3 without add 2).
Download the file from the service pack 3 Setup here--> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24
If necessary, download the file from the service pack 2 installer here--> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28

You want to upgrade 64-bit but have old obsolete programs, I don't want to lose?
I'm running Win 7 32 bit and you want to upgrade to win 7 64 bit. I know that to do this I have to do a clean install. But I have many older programs, that I always use. Many of the original disc have been lost in a fire a couple of years. And most of my old programs is not yet supported more.
My only option I see is upgraded and drop them. Or build an another desktop computer and start over and keep my old computer for programs.
But I was wondering, I could replace my hard drive with a new one, save the original hard drive, load win 7 64 bit on the new hard drive. can implement a virtual machine and run older 32-bit version on it?
I'm about to bite the bullet and go, leaving my old programs behind, but I always use and I paid a lot of money for them (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and so on.
Is there any hope, or should I spend in the future and leave the past behind?
If your programs are important to you, I suggest that stick you with Windows 7 32 bit, especially if they work very well and accomplish all tasks you need to do.
You could do a P2V and migrate your installation of Windows 32 bit to a Virtual Machine, but the process is time consuming and does not guarantee stability.
Its best you have a new machine with Windows 7 64-bit configuration and gradually migrate your applications and workflows over time.

I have Windows XP 32 bit and you want to get 64-bit Windows 7, how do I do this, 32-bit to 64-bit?
The upgrade to Windows XP?
Please read these instructions carefully and completely before you begin installing Windows 7: there are important steps that you must follow to upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Windows 7 in order to preserve your files and settings.
Before you begin, you'll need to backup all your data to an external storage device, and you will need all the installation discs for the programs that you want to keep. Please make sure that you have an external hard drive (see details below).
More detailed instructions are available at windows.microsoft.com/upgrade-windows-xp. Here are the basic steps.
1. start Windows Upgrade Advisor (winodws.microsoft.com/upgradeadvisor) to see if there are known issues that may affect the installation and the question of whether you should install the version of 32 or 64 bit Windows 7.
2 back up your files and settings on an external hard drive using Windows Easy Transfer (windows.microsoft.com/windows-easy-transfer). If you do not have an external hard drive, you will not be able to use Windows Easy Transfer. Alternatively, you can copy the files you want to keep on a USB stick, CD or DVD.
3. you will need to manually reinstall your programs, such as Microsoft Office, after I installed Windows 7. Gather the installation for your programs and all partner/license product key discs. You may be able to download programs from the Internet. For example, Windows Live Messenger can be installed from the download.live.com/messenger.
4. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in your PC. When asked "which type of installation you want. Click on "Custom (advanced)."
5. when Windows 7 is installed, use Windows Easy Transfer to restore your files and settings.
If you are not comfortable Windows 7 installation, check with a local retail or the services of the PC company store to see if they offer upgrade services. Andre Da Costa http://adacosta.spaces.live.com http://www.activewin.com

Well Yes, you can add 500 GB HDD to this book... In order to reduce the thermal problem, I suggest go with 5400 RPM... You may not really need upgrade memory for the performance of 500 GB hard drive...

I have problems when sending emails on Outlook Express (Windows XP Home) told in the Outbox, even if they were sent. What can I do?
You have apparent dbx file corruption.
Spend most of your messages out of the Inbox and then create new folders to send and sent items box after having moved the messages you want to save to a local folder that you create.
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.
In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.
With OE closed, find the DBX files for the items in the Outbox and sent and delete them. New ones will be created automatically when you open OE.
After you're done, followed by compacting your folders manually while working * off * and do it often.
Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.
General precautions for Outlook Express:
Do not archive mail in the receipt or sent items box. Create your own user-defined folders and move messages you want to put in them. Empty the deleted items folder daily. Although the dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2 GB, I recommend all a 300 MB max for less risk of corruption.
Information on the maximum size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:
http://support.Microsoft.com/?kbid=903095Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email
http://thundercloud.NET/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htmNote that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in custom Mode and uncheck analysis when the option is the result of e-mail messages.
Compact often as specified above.
And backup often.
