Zero space recover process 5.5 ESXi hosts

Hi all

What is zero process to recover space on ESXi hosts.  Storage team ask me to do this process zero space reclaim on ESXi hosts, this activity was conducted by my partner who has left the company.  Now, when I heard this line is completely new to me.

Can someone help me how to do this. ??

Thanks in advance.

What you need is to run a command on vSphere ESXi host to retrieve blocks removed on LUNs provisioned thin, take a look: VMware KB: use esxcli in vSphere 5.5 and 6.0 to retrieve the deleted VMFS blocks on LUNs provisioned thin

    Hello-

You're not quite call things correctly.  There are 2 two different things you need to do:

    1. "point source" the .ps1 file in which the function is defined by doing something like: ".." c:\temp\functionDefinitionfilename.ps1 ".
    2. _then_, you must call the function name (not the name of the .ps1 file) and can pass parameters (such as "Get-VNVMHostLogicalVolumeInfo - VMHostName myvmhost0.dom.com"

To article 0, you _must_ include the period and the space before the name of the file in which the function is defined.  This action is what makes the "Get-VNVMHostLogicalVolumeInfo" function available in your PowerShell session.  It is the "supply point".

Then, for question 1, which is the function name, "Get-VNVMHostLogicalVolumeInfo", not the name of the definition of the function (the .ps1 file) file.  Until you do these two things, you will continue to get zero results.  You follow?

  • Cannot prepare ESXi hosts

    Hey all,.

I get the error attached when trying to prepare my two 5 ESXi hosts to vCloud Director. I did some research on Google and lead only I found that it was possible the prereqs for DRS were dissatisfied, be they (DRS is enabled on both) in my environment. I went to the hosts and has attempted to examine the agent logs, but they aren't there, so it seems that this process does not quite right from the start. Any suggestions?

This command on its own, must return an output XML of VIBs installed on the ESX host.  It is somehow a post-dated check to see if the agent is already there.

If you are in Mode of Support SSH/Local Tech, the output should start something like this:

    # > pwd

    / usr/lib/vmware /.

    #>. / esxcli-software vib.list

    .....

If the command does not work then you will not be able to prepare a host.

Are these images of ESXi embedded by chance?  My lab Kit is ESXi Installable on some HP blades.

If these are incorporated, see if there is an update of flash card and that your partition zero is set on a persistent location:

    http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1033696

Hope it gets you going to... worst case is to recreate the ESXi host for an installation on a single host CD to see if it clears up the problems.

  • ESXi host double IO comments

    Hello world

I'm new to this forum, so... Hello!

anyway to the point, I've been benchmarking of storage under ESXi and noticed something strange:

I have an ESXi 4.1 (HP supplied) running on the HP ProLiant ML350 G5 server. It has a virtual machine clients running Windows XP Pro 32-bit.

I used DiskBench to create a single file of 4 GB. DiskBench reported around 95MBps write speed.

I looked on the table of the performance of the virtual machine of comments (see photo) and the diagram shows the consistent result.

Ute when I looked on the table of the performance of the ESXi * home *, it shows the same 'shape' of the graph, but with all the numbers * doubled *. (see second attachment)

Is this a bug in the charts? Or that this indicates that I did something bad and ESXi host must make twice the amount of IO for the guest virtual machine?

Here are some details about my setup:

Server: HP ProLiant ML350 G5, 3 GB of RAM

RAID controller: Smart Array P400 with BBWC

    Table: RAID 5 with 5 x 72 GB 10 k SAS

    Comments: Win XP Pro SP3

Any input would be really useful. Thank you!

The writing in the host view speed is doubled to the first scripture passage, because the host of zero, space before allocated disk of the virtual machine can access, probably for security reasons.  If the test file is deleted, then the test is repeated, because space has already been allocated and zero would be the host view and the guest must then correspond to the.

  • Mac OS x won't start on mac pro esxi host

We have the latest mac pro machine functioning as a construction of host 5.5.0 esxi 2718055.  We have setup the virtual Mac machine of the as a waiter in a magic triangle to our Mac OSX windows domain configuration.  Everything was up and running for some time now not really used because we delayed the purchase of our projected deployment Mac until this year.  I logged on today, and he says he has several updates and necessary to restart, so we issued the command reboot. Now the machine won't start upward.  It starts the boot process you see the Apple logo and progress bar starts moving on a 1/4 of the way and then it just turned off. I tried several of the commands below in the link, but nothing works, it just turns off. I tried to use my mac with vm ware fusion and the connection to the host and always change. I have triple checked that I am in the comments window active when you press these commands, but the problem is it only stays on during approximately 5 seconds then stops. I have removed from the inventory of esxi and re added, as well as restarted the ESXi host as well.  The virtual machine is sitting on the local storage of the esxi server.

    https://support.Apple.com/en-AU/HT201255

Has anyone else had a problem similar to this?  I'm getting to this section and the progress bar starts to go, but then stops and turns off virtual machine.  How can I enter in address this further.

Okay, so I went through the list and now I got using the command option r. tried before but maybe I press the keys long enough.  I was using my mac book pro and pro fusion to do all this. Couldn't make it work when you use the client heavy vsphere on my windows machine. Repair disk permissions is grayed out. I ran check disk permissions and got a ton of errors, ran check disk and he stopped saying repair the disk. Ran repair disk and he stopped to say that he cannot repair the disk, backup as many files as possible, reformat the drive and restore your backup files.

Is there another way to try to fix this sucker, or is he at this point a POS and build a new one?

  • 6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

  • Mobile 5.1 ESXi host in vCenter unpublished 6 - license?

    Hi all -

If I take an ESXi host 5.1, previously managed (under license) via a given vCenter (also v5.1) and its key in the inventory management, then I disconnect/remove this host from the vCenter 5.1 and connect it to a completely new vCenter, what happens to the host of license?

It disappear and become a 60-day eval, or his license key moves WITH the host in the new vCenter?  (The new vCenter in this scenario would have absolutely zero license keys from host ESXi that apply to guests of ESXi 5.1 existing installs below)

I was wondering what 'happens' in this scenario I have the document our so-called steps for migration.  Yes, I know that this could / should all be tested "in the lab" but don't get started me on that.  Thanks for any comments on what I can expect.

My best guess is that the host will LOSE its license now, it becomes a 'standalone' ESXi host when disconnected and removed from the old vCenter (via the "Delete" command).  I want to just make sure that it is also fully functional, if she has run VMs on it at the time or not (although Yes, I'll put it in maintenance mode before removing the old VirtualCenter and join a new).

And Yes, of course I have old games of the existing environment 5.1 ESXi license keys.  I'm just trying to set expectations as to what is happening in licenses-wise once I move the host from the old to the new vCenter.  I have all pretty well understood technical pieces, including AVS and DVS network considerations.  Thank you.

  • ESXi hosts are disconnected from the vCenter (5.5)

    Hi all

We have a little problem with our vCenter.

We have two hosts that are connected to the vCenter, unfortunately, they are listed as disconnected.

It seems that the problem are the SSL certificates on ESXi hosts that are no longer valid.

If I replace the old certificates with new ones, that I have to restart the ESXi host, am I right?

    If so, that's the problem.

We do not use any what automatic vMotion and as long as the hosts are not connected to the vCenter I can't manually, move right?

Is it possible to connect hosts to vCenter without SSL?

Sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker.

    See you soon,.

    Johannes

You need to replace the ESXi host SSL certificates.

See the Docs for the replacement of ESXi Cert below.

    ttp://www.BlueBox-Web.com/2013/04/18/replace-ESXi-certificate/

    Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5

I had regenerate the ESXi 5.5 SSL certificates, which I did without any stop to virtual machines.

Certificate replacement process can change based on the esxi version.

According to the Doc, vSphere 6.0 Documentation Centre ESXi6 host must be rebooted to replace certificates.

Anyway, in current state disconnected, you can try to regenerate the self signed SSL certs, restart management agents and try to reconnect host in vCenter.

    Thank you

  • NFS datastore on vCenter ESXi hosts

I'm running out of space on our NAS storage.

Another unit would be very costly.

It seems easy enough to add an another data store from an NFS share.

Are there problems I should be aware of if I were to add an NFS share from a physical windows 2008R2 Server?

I understand that, since the part is right on a SATA drive performance will be bad enough.

I was thinking more just for backup.

Snapshots can be taken of vm that are located on a store of data VMFS5 and stored in a NFS data store?

There will be problems with the addition of shared NFS of different targets to the ESXi hosts.

However, put pictures on different levels is not a good idea. Snapshots in VMware products function as a string. When you create a snapshot, delta / only modified data is written and read in the snapshot files / delta. The parent files are still used, but opened in read-only mode.

Remember, a snapshot is not a backup!

  • Update Server VC and 5.5 ESXi hosts to update 3 b (Build 3248547)

I'm in vCenter Server 5.5 and 5.5 ESXi hosts.  Both are updated 3A, patched to version 201510001, which is the build 3116895.  I plan the upgrade of update 3 b (Build 3248547) and I'm a little confused on the question of SSLv3.

I wonder if this point below ESXi55 U3b & VC 55U3b Known Issues applies to my config:

ESXi does not automatically added to the inventory of the vCenter servers
If you install an earlier version of vCenter Server and vSphere Update Manager for ESXi 5.5 updated 3B, then after the task of sanitation, ESXi does not automatically added to the VC inventory. Remediation process never gets done and ESXi State of connection in the VC inventory is presented as disconnected. Solution: When you restart ESXi after reorganization process is started, enable SSLv3 on ESXi (which is disabled by default). This will ensure that ESXi is added to the VC inventory automatically in minutes and sanitation as completed.

If I'm reading things correctly, upgrade to vCenter Server to 3 b first and then upgrade the ESXi hosts, will avoid lost communication problems.  Can anyone confirm?

It should be good if you update vCenter first.

The problem is that pre - U3b vCenter 5.5 forces an SSLv3 connection when connecting to an ESXi host on port 443 (not the reverse). It does this, even if the host ESXi and vCenter SSL/TLS libraries actually support TLS 1.0 + since at least vSphere 4.0.

So when you update one host to 5.5 U3b, the oldest vCenter again will try to force a connection SSLv3 that will fail, since SSLv3 has been disabled to the host. If you're updating vCenter, first of all, it will initiate a good TLS 1.0 + connection to more similar and updated hosts.

Here is an explanation of the (pre - U3b) vCenter SSLv3 handshake behavior:

Re: vCenter and host communication SSL v3

  • Create new vCenter and move the ESXi hosts

    Hello

I created a new vCenter vCenter apparatus using ISO 6.

The deployment went well and I have all the installation program. I would now like to move hosts our old vCenter to new ESXi.

I was reading this article to start the moving process.

When I try to disconnect the host I get the message below

    vcenter6_hostmove_001.png

In the article in the link above it is written that it will not affect the State of the virtual machine running on the host.

If I click on 'Yes' here, it will automatically put the host in maintenance mode?

I prefer not to do it if I can avoid it because I don't want to have to evacuate all virtual machines running on the esxi host.

Wouldn't it be better if I disabled it HA first? Then try to move hosts? Or I'm sure to sign-out and the subsequent removal?

    Thank you

    See you soon

    Hello

You must put your server in maintenance as a first step mode, then unplug and remove the server. It will work.

If it doesn't work, disable temporary HA and remove your host of the VC.

  • Boots ESXi host iSCSI front

Hi everyone, I noticed some behaviors and I was hoping someone could confirm that this is normal.  I suspect it is perhaps by design.

Situation: I have an ESXi host and I have an iSCSI target.  If the ESXi host starts before the iSCSI target is ready, the ESXi host is unable to connect to the iSCSI target and the data store is not available.  The iSCSI data store seems to be unavailable indefinitely.

    Issues related to the:

1 is this normal that someone must manually enter ESXi and re - initialize the connection to the iSCSI target in this scenario?

    2. is there a best practice to automate this process so that if the ESXi server goes up, it will automatically continue trying to scan analyze again until the iSCSI rises?

In this case, we actually virtual storage running in a VM on the host, then the ESXi host arrives before the iSCSI (running in a VM).

    Thank you!

Then this is normal behavior, given that the virtual appliance will only begin after boots ESXi finished.

  • ESXi host security

What is a good strategy to use AD to authenticate access to an ESXi host?  (I don't want to use root).  Can I create multiple groups in AD with different levels of privileges to access an ESXi host using SSH?  Or can I only use the ESXADMINS of the group do?

    Thank you!

    Hello

Fixing a VMDK broken-> glass break

Configuration of the equipment of CLI-> break glass

With the help of AD does not lighten the need to reset the password every day 50 +. That will still happen. AD simply adds the ability to add other users who are managed remotely, it does not control 'root '. So you still have to do that. This is why I don't really like integrate AD ESXi, I rather integrate HyTrust and let HyTrust manage my passwords. It will change them automatically for you every X days. It will be Thycotic and Xceedium actually. Two other password systems. You can already use one in your store, if you do, see if it will work with ESXi.

Regarding the ESXCLI, some esxcli orders can be executed with nothing more than your credentials of vCenter. Some require 'root' access to run. Even user access may not work. If you use the vSphere Management Assistant, you can control who does what on a host as well. I prefer it on powershell. Or sit on a Windows or Linux host vCLI. I have this and the use of powershell. Adapt the tool to the solution. I use them all according to what it takes. My scanner to 'security' for example uses vCLI/SDK on Linux and uses your credentials from vCenter for most. If it requires identification information specific vSphere I report only to VMware to solve.

I'd build my own tool using puppets, Chief, or Perl and wait for it to change passwords, set the new password in an encrypted safe and another tool to recover, connect through a proxy and capture my actions for the purposes of audit, can once again change the password automatically with 50 + guests. Again, it is a glass break situation that requires additional verification. All of these features can be duplicated using the free tools and a little ingenuity, but it can just take the time to do.

  • Impossible to withdraw, migrate, etc., VM on the ESXi host

Earlier, the room of my loss of cooling infrastructure hosting servers suffered vSphere causing several ESXi hosts to closure without notice due to excessive heat.  Needless to say that the results were chaotic.  While I recovered/restored most of the systems, a problem seems to persist.  It is a virtual machine that is impossible to remove, move, etc. due to locks on files active.  The option in the .vmx to "Add to the inventory" file in the data store is also disabled.  However, this virtual machine is not displayed with a "vim - cmd vmsvc/getallvms" command.  In fact, investigating the locks on files, it doesn't appear with a ' vmkvsitools lsof | grep VM_Name command"and no result back with a ' ps | grep VM_Name command.  The host in question has also been restarted and updated (5.1 update 2, Update 3) so a simple reboot does not clear the locks.  So, the question is; How can I get rid of this virtual machine so I can properly re - add to vCenter?  Any help would be appreciated.

Then just do a kill-9 20156 and you are all set - this kill everyone and goes out by the force of the virtual machine and your hair will be free
