2nd Time Capsule

I currently have a TC 3 TB connected to a cable modem. I turned on the signal my cable modem wireless turned off and use the TC as my wireless network. It works perfectly and I am very happy with its performance. I had just bought a new iMac and want to use a second TC (2 TB) to back up my new iMac. The new TC (2 TB) will be in my office about 50' of my TC 3 to in the family room (where the modem is located. My question is can I use the second TC to "extend" my network, and also use it to back up my new iMac. The second TC (2 TB) will not be connected to the first (3 TB) but the iMac can be connected to the second TC with ethernet if it would help. Can I use two cameras on the same network. Thanks for the help. I love Apple Support communities.

My question is can I use the second TC to "extend" my network, and also use it to back up my new iMac.

Yes, but unfortunately there will always be a significant loss of performance on the network when you try to "expand" using a wireless connection between the time Capsules, or any other router from Apple.

On average, you should expect to lose about half the maximum speed possible on the network when you extend this way using a wireless connection between the time Capsules, and it assumed that the second Time Capsule will be located at a point where he can receive a strong signal the first time Capsule wireless.

For example, if you need surplus more wireless signal in the vicinity of the iMac, and then the second time Capsule should be located approximately halfway between the "main" Time Capsule and the iMac.  In other words, if you need better wireless coverage in the vicinity of the iMac, it would be a mistake to locate the second close to the iMac Time Capsule, the Capsule will pick up the same weak signal in this area, and there is little if anything that was acquired by 'extension' of the network with a weak signal.

You can avoid the degradation of network performance and improve reliability as well if it is possible to use a wired Ethernet cable connection connect the two time Capsules.

  • Add 2nd HARD drive to Time Capsule - best practices?

    Hello

I have an iMac running El Capitan at the end of 2012, supporting up to a 4th Gen 2 TB Time Capsule. The total size of my backup is 1.05 to. Incremental backups take the total space used on the TC to about 1.6 TB.

Fear of the HARD drive TC will: phut that I, as a "belt and Suspenders" approach, yesterday signed a 2 TB Western Digital Elements HARD drive for the TC and other introduced Time Machine backups. He is currently conducting his first backup to the new HARD drive to the Mac OS extended (journaled) format.

The iMac and the TC are connected via 200AV Homeplugs.

I have two questions if you don't mind...

Should I have copied the existing backups from the drive HARD internal TC for the new drive external HARD first, so that two backups are ongoing for the same item, with the same 'history', as they save in alternation? What is wise or even possible? As is stands, the new hard drive back up the iMac from scratch so if the TC HDD died, I'd lose all historical backups (they date back to March 2015), with just a very recent version on the new HARD drive.

The progress of the backup on the new disk, while that connected to the TC, is slow. After that 11 hours I'm only 16 GB to 1.05 TB - it has not yet calculated the time remaining yet :-) I assumed connecting via Homeplug iMac would be more robust than the Wi - Fi for such a transfer of data. I appreciate there are several factors at play here - the size of the files, the indexing of the backup, the speed of the Homeplugs, age / my wiring standard, etc. etc.

I would have been better connecting this direct drive new external DRIVE in the iMac, the first backup, then connect it to the TC to continue it's incremental backups replacing? Yet once, is it still possible?

Thank you very much for any help. After spending only to Mac a few years back I love TM - I have never found a Windows backup system that has worked for me the way of TM.

    See you soon.

Should I have copied the existing backups from the drive HARD internal TC for the new drive external HARD first, so that two backups are continue from the same point with the same "historical."

IMHO you do it the correct way back up again.

The story is not so important after a few weeks and months... If the computer was stolen for example... what you want to do is to restore the computer as is... and what you were doing last year is really little relevant... Even if the TC Gen4 goes wrong, the story is never likely to be lost by the TC Gen4... it just needs the disc removed to put in the work. But it's the current image of the computer which is always the most important.

We found copy of the enormously successful backups. Although in this case it would have been possible to do an archive... always if you asked the question of what you need to do... Myself and several others here always recommend a new clean as backup being the most reliable method.

I would have been better connecting this direct drive new external DRIVE in the iMac, the first backup, then connect it to the TC to continue it's incremental backups replacing? Yet once, is it still possible?

This is a good question... EOP adapters can be very slow. Slower than wireless AV200 are a pretty old standard and the actual speed could be all about 30Mbps down... It might surprise you... and indeed there have been measured before.

The problem is that Time Machine backs up differently on the local network FC drives... When you plug the USB key into the TC then it's a network drive and the backup will not be recognized.

Pondini wrote a method to get around this.

    Here see Q18.

    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

I have not tried... Bob Timmons that's regular shows here has and discovered that it was not reliable. In my view, that a backup is too important to fiddling so.

However, leaving the USB drive plugged into the Mac and keep the local backup of very good sense. It is much faster and more reliable than the backups over the network.

If you really want to have the backup on the WD drive plugged into the TC, then I recommend do you via ethernet... Remove the TC of the network if it is too far for a patch lead... you can save the current configuration (export from the main menu of airport utility), then plug it into the computer directly with a short patch lead... and the USB in the TC, the backup will be much more quick... less than one full day (24 hours) for 1 TB if all goes well. Once completed you can then put the TC via the USB back in the network location.

  • Two express AirPort and time capsule connectivity challenge

    Dear readers,

I have a Time Capsule 802.11 ac connected to my ISP router and this is the router that provides DHCP addresses, etc. In our living room, I have an airport express (2nd generation) connected via radio and it works very well also. Now I got as a second AE (2nd generation) and want to put it on the floor of the attic to get a stronger signal via Ethernet to my TC. When I connect to a LAN of the TC port to the EI LAN port, the AE salon disconnects. When I add the Ethernet of AE cable in the WAN port both t he AE to the attic and TC disconnected. Currently, it is also connected via radio and it works, but will of course loose flow because it must still go through the different floors through the air compared to a stronger signal via Ethernet.

Question I have, can I connect an AE with an Ethernet cable (and how to set up the AE or TC as a result) and an adverse event via wireless (IE editing exsisting which works, but let me know if you have to configure changes too)?

    Your help is very appreciated.

Can question I have, I connect an adverse event with an Ethernet cable (and how to set up the AE or TC as a result)

Yes, but you will need to restart and reset back to default settings AE. Then connect the Ethernet cable between a LAN <>- on the TC port to the "O" of EI before WAN port you are trying to configure EI.

The problem that you are experiencing now is probably caused by connecting an Ethernet cable to an adverse event that has already been configured to "extend a wireless network. When EI is configured this way, is expected to Wireless ... not Ethernet. Ethernet is applied, it creates a feedback loop huge on the network which can cause all sorts of issues.

Wizard Installation from Apple because most of the work for you. Just click the WiFi icon at the top of the screen of the Mac and then click on AirPort Express under the title of the new AirPort base station.

When you click on AirPort Express, which will start the configuration "Wizard". It will take a few seconds to analyze the network, and then present a screen that looks like this:

Type a device name you want to call the AE, and then click Next.  Monitor the screen following very closely... See the illustration below to confirm that the AE is set up "extend using Ethernet.  Who will confirm that the wizard picked the Ethernet between the TC and AE and apply the correct settings to EI.

When you see the message Setup is complete, click done and you're done.

If the 'other' AE is already set up to extend, then no further changes will be necessary on this device.

  • Problem of Time Capsule Roaming Network airport

I'm having a problem by establishing a network of roaming.  When I plug my extender devices in ethernet cables through a switch to my Time Capsule base station, my wifi signal drops 150 + MBS next to the base station to < 10 mbs.

I have a wifi in my home network based on a new time Capsule airport base station (ATCBS) running firmware c. 7.7.7.  I have my 4th gen AEBS & a 2nd gen Airport express both race v. 7.6.7 updated firmware in place in Bridge mode to extend my network in different rooms in my house. The system works very well, but I wanted to increase the power of the signal in remote places so decided I would like to convert it to a mobile network by installing ethernet cables to connect my ATCBS the AEBS and express extensions.  I use a switch Netgear 5 port (NOT of GS205-100) that I only have a single LAN fanless available left port on my ATCBS.

I installed 3 ethernet lines-1 each in rooms with my ATCBS and airport express using mounting wall punch down taken using the convention of wiring 568B, AEBS.  These lines all end with male plugs in a unique space in the basement and are also wired as 568B.  Then I plug the ATCBS, AEBS and express lines in the switch in this remote area.

I've done a few connection cables in the role of Cat 6 cable, I had over the House, and they all very well with my cable Tester check so I know the cable itself is not defective.  The cables all run in the basement where I can see, so I know there is not any problem to be crimped/damaged.  I have not any gear to test the installed well son.  I visually inspected the male and female (punchdown) ends to ensure that colors are properly prepared.  I did a test of my jacks punchdown conductivity by testing 8 wires on the sides of the socket and the pins in gold on the inside where an ethernet cable connecting between the cut ends.  All wires are correctly leads to the appropriate pins.

If I plug just the ATCBS into the switch next to him and using a good patch cable I see no change in the strength of the Wifi.  If I can plug my express (also moved to the room of the base station) using another cable good patch in the switch, wifi drops as described above.  If I plug the ATCBS on the new socket and the switch at the other end - no change in force wifi.  If I plug the express in its remote location system also uses the new ethernet cable installed for him and passing through the switch, I get the wifi signal reduction.  I get the same result if I take the express up to thevbasemenbt and plulg the switch with a connecting cable).  It seems therefore that the problem may not be with the newly installed cables that I get the same result by using or by using cables good patch, and with the switch in the same room with the ACTBS.  It doesn't matter how I'm trying to connect all the devices together, plug extender devices into the system brings the WiFi falling to almost nothing.

Any ideas on what could happen?

I'm having a problem by establishing a network of roaming.  When I plug my extender devices in ethernet cables through a switch to my Time Capsule base station, my wifi signal drops 150 + MBS next to the base station to < 10 mbs.

That's what happens when you initially set up the device to the airport "extend" using a wireless signal... and then later connect an Ethernet cable to the unit of the airport.

Since the airport is configured to connect wireless and waiting for a wireless connection, the Ethernet connection and then creates a feedback loop massive on the entire network... in fact, basically crashed the network.

Basically, you have to start over again with the AEBS and AirPort Express and "Apple Installation Wizard" to set things upward. It's practically automatic. All you need to do is assign a device name to each airport and the wizard supports all the rest.

After the back if you need some advice on how to correctly configure things.  You can be amazed at how simple, it comes... and surprised by the wizard settings apply.

  • can't see the time capsule on network

I have a router modem wireless method

2.5/5.0 and I want to continue to use the wireless installation.

I am up-to-date on El Capitan.

The router via ethernet is an express airport 2nd generation connected to an amp for antenna and in addition to the express via ethernet is a time capsule of 3rd generation? in a press room feeding a number of multimedia devices.

What I want to do is to backup my Mac Book Pro on the time capsule which I see in the finder, but not its content, nor I see

It is contained in Time Machine.

    Can someone help?

It can be very difficult if not impossible... or only very little reliable if you do not connect the computer directly to the TC...

Anyway... have a go... find the IP address of the TC of airport utility... no chance then don't first plug the computer by ethernet directly to TB. Use Thunderbolt for the ethernet card if your mobile phone is failed.

Once you have the IP address... Use the top Finder menu... Go, connect to the server.

Type AFP://10.1.1.46 (substitute your real IP of the TC).

When the connection is done put the password and save in keychain.

It will work up until the IP... Therefore, force is not to change.

Still had problems give me a screenshot of the airport with the pages of summary of the Express and the TC utility.

  • Time Capsule keeps losing express Extender

I have a 4th Gen Time Capsule and 2 2nd Gen airport expresses configured as Extender.   Both were broadcast excellent for most.  Recently I discovered that there is something dead in my childhood bedroom.   So I decided to add a 3rd express to fill the void.   The installation program connected very well, without a hitch, but after awhile, I noticed that the 3rd express was not taking all the wireless devices.   He would show as connected but no information has been giving any information on the signal as it should.   I restarted the entire network and she came back to the top but after a little while the same problem.   Thinking it's a bum on purpose, I tried to reboot once more but this time the problem moved to another express, this time the master bedroom.    I know that he did not take due to the wireless devices all devices were connecting to the Capsule itself.   However there is a blu - ray player with no wifi plugged into the express and it connected right and was streaming the movies smoothly.    I am not finding a whole lot of troubleshooting on the net for the same problem, but have seen many parameters showing expresses more connected than mine.  I tried a reboot total of each device individually to see if it would help, but she also seem well yesterday when I put initially in place. Someone at - it ideas?

It is really difficult to diagnose.

What I think is happening, is that the Express pass connection TB who work... connection to another express which will not work.

Apple does not seem to consider this never happens... but he does.

The best solution is to run ethernet and use the Express as AP instead of Repeater.

Since the simple reason that you run repeaters is to avoid running ethernet, I assume that this is not a viable alternative... so what about EOP adapters. They do not always work, but when they can work well.

Again, if they also fail, you can try to force the connection but you already use for many units.

Wireless is not really suitable for Repeater configurations... When you have 3 repeaters without the ability to change the names wireless... then it becomes a mess.

I do not recommend that you assign a different name for the two bands on the TC.

    for example, TC24ghz and TC5ghz

Installed at least 2 express to extend the strip of 5 GHz... and other 2.4 GHz... one is the worst spot signal.

It may not work, but by changing the names and setting the wireless, give you him some hope of a connection just for the TC and does not paginate in the nearest Express.

  • Said airport Time Capsule LAN Ethernet cables disconnected, but they are all connected

We have a Time Capsule airport 2nd generation connected to a Comcast Modem for Internet service. Our network is suddenly saying that the LAN Ethernet does not work because a cable is unplugged. However, I checked all the cables and connections. I disconnected all devices and then only plugged my Mac a to. A continuous Wi - Fi connection to work but not the Ethernet LAN. I tried to use another LAN cable. He also said that a cable is unplugged. We need the Ethernet LAN to access high-speed Internet and I tried everything and can not operate. The Ethernet LAN has been upward and years of work. If the Capsule or the Comcast Modem was defective, we would not have Wi - Fi access to the Internet, but we do. Material preferences network has always been implemented are configured automatically. However, the speed is now empty display instead of speed. If I change the settings to manually set up the material, I am still unable to set the speed manually, because when I try to select the up-down arrows next to the speed, nothing happens. It's as if the speed setting has been disabled. It's so frustrating. And I have no idea how to fix this.

If you have not already completed a power cycle full of your network, now would be a good time to do this.

Turning off all network devices in any order you want

    Wait a minute

Turn on the modem first and leave 2-3 minutes, he managed by itself

Switch on the device connected to the modem and leaves turn a good minute

Keep power devices one at a time about a minute out until the entire network is back

    Check the network

  • Best way to put up the time Capsule as back-up only?

There seems to be a lot of discussion on this issue, but I can't seem to find one that tells me what I need to know...

    The goal

I'm trying to set up my Time Capsule to support my Mac Pro wireless, but do not use it as a router. My plan is to connect the TC to my router (which is in another room of Mac Pro) with an ethernet cable, and then for the first backup only connect the TC for the Mac Pro with a long ethernet cable. Once the first backup is complete I remove the cable Mac Pro and have the TC backup Mac Pro incrementally.

    The Situation

I tried setting up like this yesterday and it seemed to have worked, but returns support painfully slowly despite the ethernet connections. I don't know if the Mac seems to realize that it is connected to the TC with an ethernet cable - do I have to change any settings? It took 24 hours to save 200 GB and there is an another 400GO to go. He managed approximately 500 MB in the last 10 minutes. I have updated TC up as the router and the backup and I have never had any problems - I could easily back up the entire hard drive in a 24 hours period when it is connected with the ethernet before disconnecting and wireless backup. Could someone go through with me step by step how to configure this so I know that I just did?

    Thank you

    ID

P.S. The TC is in question is a 802.11n (2nd generation), 1 TB

As an update - if I turn off the WiFi, the connection to the TC is lost, then obviously the ethernet connection does not, and it's wireless backup, where the slow pace. Can anyone help?

  • Unstable WiFi with Time Capsule + Booster Express

Hello.  Every night my wi - fi breaks down.  I called Comcast and they swear the internet connection works and routers are the problem. (Internet works with a wired connection).

I have 2 routers: Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac with a Terminal Airport Express 802.11n (2nd generation) in the range extender.  Both are about 1.5 years old.

In the evening, the lights flash yellow and they go in and out.  AirPort Utility often shows messages yellow triangle error.  I can unplug and restart them and often the wi - fi goes back only to go down again later.  In this case all evening.  Increases the frequency and duration of the outage.

If it is in fact a router problem, suggestions on how to solve the problems?

    Thank you very much!

What is the make & model of the Comcast Internet modem brings you your Time Capsule (TC) connected to via Ethernet? Where is the Terminal AirPort situated Express regarding the TC? Same room, another room or different floor? Are they connected by wire or wireless?

  • Restore backup after the reset Time Capsule (1st generation) using Windows PC

I apologize if this question is somewhere already. I tried to find an answer and I've seen similar discussions but not exactly what I need.

A bit of history... The location is a small school with about 10 cameras, its network systems, point of sale, cloud networked storage, etc. Was asked by the owner to create or activate a Guest WiFi SSID. They said he worked at the same time, but some work was done by a previous technician and they lost the WiFi of comments.

So I used the Airport utility to access the time Capsule. However, after the change to the next level (enable the public IP sharing? maybe?), he ended up destroying the entire network, as in nothing was back upward when the utility scanned for devices. Even the Time Capsule was not recognized by the utility. I ended up doing a hard reset on the Time Capsule and do my best to manually configure the device again, even though I was not initially designed the network. I have also discovered that 1st generation Time Capsules have no comments WiFi capabilities.

To make a long story short (too late... "I know sorry..) .. I got most of the features, functions, etc. on the network back where they were before, with the exception of camera systems and a network storage device active cloud to the owner's House.  What I would like to know is... Since then, I understand that a hard reset does NOT erase the backup or other data on the shared disk in the time Capsule... is there an easy way to restore the settings of all of the time Capsule before the problem occurred?  I would need to do this using a Windows computer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. What I'm trying to avoid the most is having to reset all the cameras, which are upstairs, hard to reach areas. I guess that people who were previously assigned on the cameras must still be there. If only I could get the Capsule of time exactly where it was before he went down, which would allow me to save a lot of time and frustration.

You can also (2nd choice)... If there is a simple way to detect the active network cameras and other devices on the Time Capsule and pull the IP out of them, that would be helpful as well.

    Thanks in advance for answers!

What I would like to know is... Since then, I understand that a hard reset does NOT erase the backup or other data on the shared disk in the time Capsule... is there an easy way to restore the settings of all of the time Capsule before the problem occurred?

    You have my sympathy all...

Been to this place before today... and I always get myself into it by pure stubbornness... I should just walk on some of these jobs and tell them too hard...!

What you had to do was to export the configuration before you start playing. Without export of the configuration there is not much hope of healing to less than the previous tech saved a configuration to the unit... This example gets much delicate.

The TC is actually able to contain several configurations... There is a good chance, however, that wipe you the.

Anyway... coming to the serious Tin. (same version on Mac and PC utility should work the same).

Here's my TC who foolishly a reset.

When I do something... first manual configuration, I wonder is to revert to the previous version.

You have done or could you saved the previous settings as a profile... I hope that you did... in the hope...!

IF so, you have a saved profile.

In the area of the top menu go in manage profiles.

Now, if you are lucky or did the job just last time... by accident... you'll have a saved profile... Just click back.

If nothing is there, or it's current settings... Sorry, but you didn't know something was there... and you cannot was expected to know the trouble you would get yourself in.

If you have changed a setting in the TC of the bridge in router mode...

(enable the public IP sharing? maybe?)

Getting back to what it was... mode bridge being the most common.

At the bridge of the TC does control most things... and you need to return to the main router.

If the TC kicking upward a stench to return to the bridge, reset it simply still once and then bridge will work... It would be useful to loads to remember what was the setting... just to see the bridge takes the TC of the equation to know where the cameras are.

If the cameras are on static IP, they will respond to a ping scanner... If the primary router is configured for a standard range of IP addresses... 192.168.1.xxx some.

Then the TC in bridge must have also taken an ip address in this range and the cameras (Ethernet or wireless)?

I hope that ethernet, but if they were using the TC as a wireless access point, unless you know exactly the SSID wireless as it was in the past then you do not have this info...

Look at any computer, they have in the building that was running wireless and watch all the SSID that they use... one of these is likely the TC and you can restore this name.

Or drop a camera... and ethernet allows to connect to him... and find the ssid, that it's been fixed... redefine the TC on this name (SSID) wireless security... all cameras must be able to connect to it... and you can then restore the entire system by connecting to the IP address that will be displayed in the list on the main router.

Good luck.. as says Han Solo... you'll need!

  • Make an express airport only connect to an another AE and not the main Time Capsule.

    Hi all

I have a Time Capsule airport and 2 Airport Express. The Capsule is far and an of the expressed airport is in the middle (call this) 1 and the other far from it, I'm calling this 2. As it is now, the 2nd Airport Express terminal connects to Time Capsule. However, it gives me much lower speed (Interruptions during the game). But if the 2nd Airport Express connects to the AE first, which is the extension of the network of transport CANADA, significantly improves the speed.

I've tried everything. All devices are relatively new (think of the last model). I called the Apple Support, but their solution was to any wire. I asked if the 2nd AE can be configured statically, but they have quoted me their policy, which is not supported and took my info and never called back. I read the posts of the forum, but could not find any relevant information.

Can someone tell me how I can do the 2nd AE connect only to the AE 1 (in the middle) so I can get faster speed for the game device wired to the 2nd AE? Your feedback is much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    B.

When you try to extend using the wireless, there will be a loss of speed associated with the process.

When the two Airport Express connect to Time Capsule, it will be more loss of speed because the 2 devices are connecting and extending.

If the 2nd Airport Express does not connect to... Time Capsule and it connect instead to the 1st AirPort Express... then 2nd Terminal AirPort Express doesn't have to extend the network.  The 2nd Airport Express could be used for AirPlay, or to connect to a remote printer on the USB port, but it cannot 'expand' or 'repeat' in this case the signal of the wireless network.

So you're wrong bing into thinking that the network is the extension more quickly if the 2nd Express connects to the 1st. Your network will behave at the faster speed even if you just turn off the 2nd Express.  It is not at all in any case extending the network, and you don't need.

Here's another way to look at the same thing... using an illustration of the Apple support document for the extension of a network:

IF... you can connect the 1st Terminal AirPort Express at the time using an Ethernet cable Capsule... then... the 2nd Airport Express would extend the signal from the first... but speed would be because you are trying to extend using the wireless.

SO... connect the AirPort Express devices using Ethernet... then you will have maximum coverage at the highest speed... Since there is no loss of signal via the Ethernet cable.

    • Airport Express
    • netgear switch 8 ports
    • It works pretty well.  All my wired connections work fine.  Wireless is quite good but cove not enough of space in my house.

Think about adding my airport express capsule of time in my office - plugged into one of the hard wired connections.  Who works AND let me wish the WIFI?

    Thank you!

Yes fine, assuming that first test you the Ethernet port in the office by connecting a computer (with WIFI disabled on the computer) using a spare Ethernet cable runs to ensure that the computer can get a good connection in this way.

Put the airport Time Capsule to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name and password in your existing network. Apple installation "Wizard" automatically configure airport Time Capsule in the correct setting of the Bridge Mode for the device.

Time Machine backup to a sparsebundle.

The sparsebundle will use the share name of computer. So, it should be obvious who is your Macbook and that is your Macpro.

Open the sparsebundle in Finder and keep open the subfolders until you get to the backup of each separate hard drive...

You has of course set the exclusion in Time Machine?

By default, Time Machine will exclude your second drive unless you have included it. Did you?

Once you get to this level during the backup, you can do a full restore manually whenever you want.
