4.0, ESXi and 3Ware 9650SE Raid 10 array - now what?

Hello-

I installed ESXi 4.0 on a new server with the above mentioned RAID 10 array and that you have installed vSphere Client on a separate computer. Under storage cards, I see the following:

ICH10 2 port SATA IDE Controller

vmhba1 block SCSI

vmhba34 block SCSI

ICH10 4 port SATA IDE Controller

vmhba0 block SCSI

vmhba33 block SCSI

iSCSI Software adapter

iSCI adapter software iSCSI

Mobo is a supermicro X8DAH + controller 3Ware is a 9650SE SATA 8LPML (8 ports) with 4 disks preconfigure RAID 10

How can I get ESXi to see table so I can start installing VM?

Yes, this link seems to have enough detailed instructions on how to install the specific driver under ESX and ESXi.

When I run Setup ESXi 4.0 DVD, there no option anywhere to load additional drivers?

According to the article, your RAID device can only serve as secondary storage under ESXi.    If this is the case, I would be first to install ESXi to a small local SATA or USB.  After the initial installation, you can then follow the instructions in the article linked to download/install the driver for your RAID controller.  Then you can use your RAID array to store your guests on.

  • Adding space with bigger hard drives with 3WARE 9650SE RAID

My original installation of Windows 7 is on a RAID 10 set up using 4 640 GB drives on a 3Ware 9650SE RAID card.  I replaced the drives one at a time with 1 TB drives, leaving reconstruction table each time before adding another.   Now that all 4 are in place, I would have a little less than 2 TB of space, but it does not appear.  Win7 is installed on a 200 GB partition, with the rest of the disk space showing that GB 972 yet (that I use for file storage).   Any thoughts on how to extend this option to use all the available space under the name more storage RAID 2?  I does not appear under management of the reader and does not help the 3DM 2 with resizing tool.  This has worked well for the RAID migration when on the SATAs motherboard, but it's another controller.   I would prefer not to have to reload Windows to use the extra space.

  • ESXi 4 3ware 9650se adapter missing after restart

I'm under esxi 4 with a 3ware 9650se adapter. It was great to work for a few months, but today I couldn't connect to the server by using the vsphere client but could ping on the server so I restarted it. After the reboot the 3ware adapter and the volumes are missing. Is it possible to check the State in esxi do I need to reinstall the drivers?

If you go to the/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod of driving record / you see the pilot 3ware that there are listed?  If not I would reapply the bundle offline as described here - https://www.3ware.com/3warekb/article.aspx?id=15548.  If it is there, check the logs for any errors related to the driver.

  • GCCA 3ware 9650SE RAID several paths

I have a card to SATA RAID 3ware 9650SE on my box of esxi. I've implemented since my previous esxi 3.5 installation several paintings, one being 4x1TB led to a RAID 5. I activated the function autocarving in the configuration of 3ware split of this table in a 2 TB LUNS, the rest going to a logic unit number separate. Using the oem.tgz created by 3ware, it worked flawlessly.

I've since upgraded to esxi4 using the new vmware certified drivers for the 3ware card. Everything seems to work fine until I noticed that was missing the second LUN mentioned above. After a bit of Googling, I tracked down the culprit.

VMkernel: 0:02:46:07.508 cpu7:39633) WARNING: VMW_SATP_LOCAL: satp_local_claim: VMW_SATP_LOCAL does not support several paths per device.  Refusing to claim the vmhba1:C0:T1:L1 path.

My question is simply can get around this? The 3ware card will work with any of the other types of native storage? If so, what should I do?

    good news!

the device id t10. AMCC___V0258752290BCA003458 should be unique, maybe 3ware can tell how to configure each lun unique id?

  • RAID 1 array degraded; no option to rebuild

I have a PowerEdge T110 server with a PERC S100 RAID controller (firmware / RAID of 'false').  Unfortunately, I had a little accident tonight while I was working on this machine.  In trying to clean up a mess of cable, I accidentally yanked on the wrong cable and disconnected the power supply of the server.

When the server has been run through POST, he paused and said the RAID 1 array was degraded.  Entering the S100 configuration, it tells me that unit 0 is degraded, and the other is fine.  The server starts very well.

I opened the OpenManage utility that displays the status of the Ramdisk to deteriorate as well.  However, despite the poster the State as being degraded, absolutely nowhere no it lists all option to rebuild the table.  I can't even check the consistency.  Under the drop-down list for 'tasks', the only available options are:

    1. Delete
    2. Having-right/remove the dedicated hot spare assignment
    3. Change of name

That's all.  Of course, I don't want to do any of these.  The BIOS configuration utility seems also unnecessary.  Although it lists the specific physical drive that is deteriorating, I see no option to rebuild the coherence of the table.  Because the physical disk has failed and is not actually damaged, I don't need or want to replace it.

So, why everything isn't rebuild option listed, and how can I rebuild this table without deleting all of the volume and restore a backup?

I tried swapping cables, and while he was smart enough to realize that the disk has just moved, it has not affected the degraded disk.

I decided to do bankruptcy and just remove the degraded and 'clean' drive by using DiskPart.  That has worked, and Windows 7 shows the drive as "not initialized".  I put back it in the server, and it has been recorded as being non RAID... was not even as 'new '.  Basically, it was like its own volume automatically.

I kept starting in Windows Server to verify that I have screwed something up to put my nerves at ease.  Windows starts, I went in the virtual disks of OpenManage section and saw that the (rather old) 'new' drive appeared.  So, I chose "delete" in the list of available jobs.  He deleted successfully, disappearing from the list of virtual disks.

At this point, I thought I could go ahead and assign a spare drive dedicated to the array degraded since the tasks available.  Nope. No disks available. What?

Panic now, I went in the "physical disk" section of OpenManage, and he was there with his status as a 'ready' (opposite to 'online').  The title of his available tasks, it was 'global hot spare assignment. "  I did that, and the status of the RAID battery under 'virtual disks' changed to 'reconstruction '.

[ADMIN NOTE: profanity removed by TOU], why was it so difficult?

During the time I spent writing this, its reconstruction progress has reached 4%.  I'll update on the State when it is finished.

EDIT: Everything worked successfully.  Reconstruction finished after a few hours and the RAID volume is re-reading in good health.

  • ESXi 5.1u1 + 3ware 9650SE on Haswell

    Hello

I am currently in the middle of a hardware upgrade for my home machine ESXi 5.1 (u1), which I use for testing and training to certifications (microsoft, for the most part)

The specifications of the machine are:

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670 (Haswell)

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H

    MEM: Kingston HyperX KHX1600C10D3B1K2 / 16G

Bootdisk: Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD, 73 GB

VMstorage: Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ, 750GB (<-will be removed when this issue is resolved)

    I could Pick-up a LSI/3Ware 9650SE-8LPML + 4 Western Digital WD20EARS Green 2 TB for a good price to add a few additional entries into the mix.

The controller is installed correctly, creates a RAID 10 volume using the bios interface of the card. Install the official driver under VmWare for it, but it's not appear under the storage devices, but the driver is listed. When I connect to the machine via ssh and run the lspci command I can see reconigzes the controller and it addresses even with an id:

00:03:00.0 mass storage controller: 3ware 9650SE SATA - II RAID PCIe Inc. <-without driver loaded

    00:03:00.0 controller of mass storge: 3ware 9650SE 3ware 9650SE [vmhba1] <-with driver loaded

When I manually try to add the device to the storagelist, I get the error of places:

~ # esxcli storage base adapter new analysis - adapter vmhba1

Invalid adapter specified or cannot get the adapter "vmhba1.

The devices works perfectly under Windows 7 and Linux on the same machine, but VmWare is still a problem. I also tried affecting internally (Lynx) sata ports in AHCI mode IDE, since ESXi for thos as a raid controller aswell, but it makes no difference.

Other people have had success with the creation of an iso cutom with the preloaded driver, but this did work ' t either. Others had success with ESXi 5.0, but this version does not recognize the controller integrated (for startup disk) or the 3ware. A customized version of ESXi, LSI itself had the same problem.

I am disappointed that even though this controller is on the HCL, it always gives me a hard time installing it. and I need to spend with my certification.

PS: Both the motherboard and the map are the latest versions of firmware (I even tried a few old FW)

Don't know if this will help, but I downloaded the latest aacraid driver (VMware ESXi 5.5 driver for RAID SAS of PMC - Sierra scsi-aacraid controller) of the vmware download area and who charge along side the LSI driver worked for me. This leaves my ESXi 5.5 detects the card - don't know if it was the plasebo effect.

    Hardware/software related:

    -LSI 9650SE - 12ML

    -5.5 ESXi

Looks like you already have the card detected then gives the Adaptive driver a whirl.

N.B: I think the installation is the same for this, just extract the zip offline_bundle zip or I think the vib file will work. Alternatively, you can load the driver using the customizer of ESXi, for my installation, I installed the Realtek driver aacraid drivers and driver lsi (in that order - reverse).

  • 3ware 9650SE - unsupported ESXi 6?

What information I can understand, the RAID "3ware 9650SE" card is not supported in ESXi 6.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

Anyone know if it will be supported or if this map is obsolete for ESXi 6?

According to the VMware HCL, 3ware 9650SE has not been supported into something more recent than ESXi 5.1 U3

  • ESXi and local RAID 1 - do not know if it works

I have setup a RAID 1 (2 discs) on my box of ESXi. Now I loaded ESXi and registered in with the vSphere client. In "The memory", is to show both of these drives. Should it only showing a?

    raid.png

I thought that ESXi should see 'one' in the car for me to put on.and data warehouses, then the RAID controller would just reflect. But when I try to create a data store, it allows me to opt for the second time either of these discs on first, then the other drive. Is this job right? This doesn't seem to be just if I can just add warehouses of data on each disk individually.

which means that you are not using the controller RAID HRDWARE and using your software RAID. in esxi software RAID is not supported

  • Slow 3ware SATA RAID 9690

    Here's a strange.

System Specs: ESXi 4.1 with updated oem.tgz for drivers of 3ware, Biostar TA890FXE, AMD Phenom II Black 3.2 ghz, 16 GB RAM, 3ware 9690SA-4i (with battery), Intel 1000GT, boot USB Flash 4 GB disk

I have two data warehouses using the same 1 TB SATA Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB disks:
    (A) 3ware 9690 RAID-5, 4 discs, total capacity of 2.73 tb (2 to & Go 730 Lun, images of comments, primary storage)
    (B) SATA AHCI, 2 disks total capacity 1.81 to (2 x 900 ~ to ISO and random storage Lun)

When the copy of the RAID to the standard SATA drives, it is doomed fast. But SATA in RAID, the speed is ridiculously slow. It seems to take easily 10 x as much time or more when copying very large files.

I noticed when I went to copy all my files and images of comments to a data store while I reformatted with a larger block size. Then the copy to roughly 400 GB from A to B, it took less than an hour, perhaps as little as 30 minutes. New B in A, it took 6 hours when I dropped.

In addition, I have a little bit of reference tool called Parkdale who made drive simple comparative analysis in Windows and have some real numbers to go with my comments in ESXi.

    Option A with SATA RAID = 2.6 MB/s write, 73.7 MB/s reading (Win Server 2003)
    Option B with SATA AHCI = 111.1 MB/s write, 108.1 MB/s Read (Win Server 2000)

There is certainly something weird here. Any ideas on how to test, what to look for, or what could be the problem?

You may need to activate the write cache. It wouldn't be activated without the battery. Some controllers to activate the cache because soon the battery is attached and responsible, but not all.
