3ware 9650SE - unsupported ESXi 6?

What information I can understand, the RAID "3ware 9650SE" card is not supported in ESXi 6.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

Anyone know if it will be supported or if this map is obsolete for ESXi 6?

Thanks in advance

According to the VMware HCL, 3ware 9650SE has not been supported into something more recent than ESXi 5.1 U3

  • ESXi 5.1u1 + 3ware 9650SE on Haswell

    Hello

I am currently in the middle of a hardware upgrade for my home machine ESXi 5.1 (u1), which I use for testing and training to certifications (microsoft, for the most part)

The specifications of the machine are:

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670 (Haswell)

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H

    MEM: Kingston HyperX KHX1600C10D3B1K2 / 16G

Bootdisk: Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD, 73 GB

VMstorage: Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ, 750GB (<-will be removed when this issue is resolved)

    I could Pick-up a LSI/3Ware 9650SE-8LPML + 4 Western Digital WD20EARS Green 2 TB for a good price to add a few additional entries into the mix.

The controller is installed correctly, creates a RAID 10 volume using the bios interface of the card. Install the official driver under VmWare for it, but it's not appear under the storage devices, but the driver is listed. When I connect to the machine via ssh and run the lspci command I can see reconigzes the controller and it addresses even with an id:

00:03:00.0 mass storage controller: 3ware 9650SE SATA - II RAID PCIe Inc. <-without driver loaded

    00:03:00.0 controller of mass storge: 3ware 9650SE 3ware 9650SE [vmhba1] <-with driver loaded

When I manually try to add the device to the storagelist, I get the error of places:

~ # esxcli storage base adapter new analysis - adapter vmhba1

Invalid adapter specified or cannot get the adapter "vmhba1.

The devices works perfectly under Windows 7 and Linux on the same machine, but VmWare is still a problem. I also tried affecting internally (Lynx) sata ports in AHCI mode IDE, since ESXi for thos as a raid controller aswell, but it makes no difference.

Other people have had success with the creation of an iso cutom with the preloaded driver, but this did work ' t either. Others had success with ESXi 5.0, but this version does not recognize the controller integrated (for startup disk) or the 3ware. A customized version of ESXi, LSI itself had the same problem.

I am disappointed that even though this controller is on the HCL, it always gives me a hard time installing it. and I need to spend with my certification.

PS: Both the motherboard and the map are the latest versions of firmware (I even tried a few old FW)

Don't know if this will help, but I downloaded the latest aacraid driver (VMware ESXi 5.5 driver for RAID SAS of PMC - Sierra scsi-aacraid controller) of the vmware download area and who charge along side the LSI driver worked for me. This leaves my ESXi 5.5 detects the card - don't know if it was the plasebo effect.

    Hardware/software related:

    -LSI 9650SE - 12ML

    -5.5 ESXi

Looks like you already have the card detected then gives the Adaptive driver a whirl.

N.B: I think the installation is the same for this, just extract the zip offline_bundle zip or I think the vib file will work. Alternatively, you can load the driver using the customizer of ESXi, for my installation, I installed the Realtek driver aacraid drivers and driver lsi (in that order - reverse).

  • ESXi 4 3ware 9650se adapter missing after restart

I'm under esxi 4 with a 3ware 9650se adapter. It was great to work for a few months, but today I couldn't connect to the server by using the vsphere client but could ping on the server so I restarted it. After the reboot the 3ware adapter and the volumes are missing. Is it possible to check the State in esxi do I need to reinstall the drivers?

If you go to the/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod of driving record / you see the pilot 3ware that there are listed?  If not I would reapply the bundle offline as described here - https://www.3ware.com/3warekb/article.aspx?id=15548.  If it is there, check the logs for any errors related to the driver.

  • GCCA 3ware 9650SE RAID several paths

I have a card to SATA RAID 3ware 9650SE on my box of esxi. I've implemented since my previous esxi 3.5 installation several paintings, one being 4x1TB led to a RAID 5. I activated the function autocarving in the configuration of 3ware split of this table in a 2 TB LUNS, the rest going to a logic unit number separate. Using the oem.tgz created by 3ware, it worked flawlessly.

I've since upgraded to esxi4 using the new vmware certified drivers for the 3ware card. Everything seems to work fine until I noticed that was missing the second LUN mentioned above. After a bit of Googling, I tracked down the culprit.

VMkernel: 0:02:46:07.508 cpu7:39633) WARNING: VMW_SATP_LOCAL: satp_local_claim: VMW_SATP_LOCAL does not support several paths per device.  Refusing to claim the vmhba1:C0:T1:L1 path.

My question is simply can get around this? The 3ware card will work with any of the other types of native storage? If so, what should I do?

    good news!

the device id t10. AMCC___V0258752290BCA003458 should be unique, maybe 3ware can tell how to configure each lun unique id?

  • Adding space with bigger hard drives with 3WARE 9650SE RAID

My original installation of Windows 7 is on a RAID 10 set up using 4 640 GB drives on a 3Ware 9650SE RAID card.  I replaced the drives one at a time with 1 TB drives, leaving reconstruction table each time before adding another.   Now that all 4 are in place, I would have a little less than 2 TB of space, but it does not appear.  Win7 is installed on a 200 GB partition, with the rest of the disk space showing that GB 972 yet (that I use for file storage).   Any thoughts on how to extend this option to use all the available space under the name more storage RAID 2?  I does not appear under management of the reader and does not help the 3DM 2 with resizing tool.  This has worked well for the RAID migration when on the SATAs motherboard, but it's another controller.   I would prefer not to have to reload Windows to use the extra space.

Yes, this link seems to have enough detailed instructions on how to install the specific driver under ESX and ESXi.

When I run Setup ESXi 4.0 DVD, there no option anywhere to load additional drivers?

According to the article, your RAID device can only serve as secondary storage under ESXi.    If this is the case, I would be first to install ESXi to a small local SATA or USB.  After the initial installation, you can then follow the instructions in the article linked to download/install the driver for your RAID controller.  Then you can use your RAID array to store your guests on.

  • No additional drivers on ESXi 4.0 installation prompt

Hi, I am trying to install ESXi 4.0 on an Asus M3N78-VM motherboard. I have two one terabyte WD SATA drives connected to a 3Ware 9650SE RAID controller and configured as a RAID 1 array. I downloaded the 3Ware driver image and burned it on a CD. I was advised to use the 3Ware CD when "invited to additional drivers" during version 4.0 to install process but the guest never appears (and 4.0 never sees the readers). What should I do to get the prompt appears so I can install the drivers so I can get 4.0 to install?

    Thank you

    Joe B

There are instructions sperate esx4i and esx4 on 3ware site.  When you use ESX4i, you cannot use the 3ware controller to install esx4i on, can only be used for secondary vmfs volumes (mainly because you can add drivers AFTER installing esx4i.

VMware has a cd ISO labled the following: VMware ESX Server 3.5 Update 3 driver for 3ware 9650SE and 9690SA SAS HBA controllers GCCA CD.  The URL is: http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/drivercd/esx350-3w-9xxx-2.24.08.021vm35-146309.html#InstallESX

QUESTION: Anyone know if this drive works with ESXi 3.5?  The downloads of the installation, update 3 or 4, I tried to load do not work for me.  If this does not work, can you me where the download is that he asks?  If this is not the case, the ISO EXSi can be modified to work.

The disc is for ESX only but if necessary you can extract the driver and use with ESXi.   I had check ESXi was last updated yesterday and there is no 3ware with her driver.   See the instructions here to create an oem.tgz file - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/customize_oem_tgz.php.  There is also a link to the 3Ware Update1/2 site of 3Ware driver.  I check which driver is more recent and use it.

  • Question APC UPS - using documents lamw and j.holland - VIMA ESXi 4.0

    Hi guys,.

I've implemented our UPS with our ESXi server according to document (revision 4)

    http://VIOPS.VMware.com/home/docs/doc-1341/version/4

    Note

that revision 4 of the document is not that scripted lamw,

but using the ssh hack. Everything works beautifully when I invoke the

script ups_shutdown manually from the console for ESXi does not support:

    #!/bin/bash
    VMID=$(/usr/bin/vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms | grep -v Vmid | awk '{print $1}')

    for i in $VMID
    do
      STATE=$(/usr/bin/vim-cmd vmsvc/power.getstate $i | tail -1 | awk '{print $2}')

      if [ $STATE == on ]
      then

        /usr/bin/vim-cmd vmsvc/power.shutdown $i

      fi

    done

    sleep 30

    /sbin/shutdown.sh
    /sbin/poweroff

First of all, to the right of the bat in the first line of the script throws and error (-file of ashes not found error). So I had to remove that (no idea why?).

When I run this script from the (unsupported) ESXi console, all right, all the computers shut down virtual and, in the end, therefore the ESXi.

When I run this script to VIMA (ssh to the console, remote script execution), only the VIMA machine stops. If I modify the above script does not close the VIMA, all virtual machines (except of course VIMA) stops and made the ESXi...

VIMA is the first machine that gets shutdown - it has the Vmid lowest. It seems that this causes the rest of the script to stop running... How is that possible when in fact it is running on the ESXi Server?

I'm pulling my hair out on this one (or what's left of them). Does anyone have an idea why it does not work...? lamw?

    Thanks in advance guys.

The reason why you should delete/bin/bash because ESXi 4.0 not supported console Busybox has more a symbolic link to/bin/Ash bash that resembles the bash environment, so that would make error if you try to specify the path that does not exist.

About the scheduling of the production of vmsvc/getallvms, you can always do a grep - v on VIMA VM is not part of the list and have a separate condition which which will close at the end.

  • Issue of data store

    Hello

Currently I have a disk (SSD) running the operating system and of my virtual machines.  I want to consolidate all of my machines at home on this machine.  I want to reuse the 3ware 9650se card to run a Raid1 and have a few VMs there to act as file servers.  I also want to have a single SATA drive for a VM acting under the name of backup.

For recovery purposes, lets say if I have to reinstall the ESXi, the other data store on the SATA drive is recoverable?  Maybe even the readers on the 3ware if map I have reinstall the driver for the card?

    TIA,

    TT

    Evening,

I'm not sure what you're asking... but here's my knife to 100%.  If you have two hard disks:

Disc 1: Has ESXi and some vm

    Disc 2: VM only

If you want to reinstall ESXi on disc 1, this could be done without destroying the virtual machine, as long as the current score has room for ESXi installation.

    Thank you

  • Local data store storage add

Here's my situation (new at this stuff, so I hope that more information will help you with help replied... question I need help below.)

    My white box server hardware:

Server hardware: Asus P6T i7 920, 12 Gig RAM, card Ethernet Intel Pro1000 PT Quad, 3ware 9650SE-12ML (I seek in get battery backup, just in case the powersuppy happens as I realize UPS tht is not a complete solution - right?) with 8 1.5 TB SATA green in a Raid 6 array gives me about 8 + TB with an immediate replacement all housed (I know raid 10 is more favored for speed) but this raid card has received a very good speed in testing, so I'll try first) in a CPP of NORCO-4220 4U Rackmount Server chassis.  I also have a SATA 500 GB which will hold the ESXi and virtual machines installed. The network includes a firewall, Netgear Prosafe FVS336G, GS724Tv from Netgear ProSafe 24 port Gigabit Managed Switch on a dhcp, internet modem cable

    service provider.

    My installation:

ESXi 4.1 is installed and running.  I installed three operating systems - MS windows server 08, MS windows XP, ubuntu.  I sculpted auto table in pieces of 2 TB and want to add to Esxi.  I know that there is a debate on the use only no esxi to expand LUNS together, but I read that if they are on the same axis (table) If a drive goes the table always stand together as I have both drives and ready failure from emergency protection.

I'm going to set up some maps of the team once I get this in place storage server to spread the load of the esxi, storage and later web server host (something for another discussion once I have the problem of storage add resolved first (I think).)

How to add storage, it's new to me and I need some help here:

I see all the LUNS data store when I go to the configuration tab, then select storage from the left column, then select Add storage.  I select the network file system (nfs later to have an xfs file system).

    • The first property page comes up, and I'm not sure what to ask for server?:  What do I put here... the .com address I Set up with Ddns, or should I put my real numbered address location (which is the same as the server esxi because that's a local disk array)?

    • The next is the folder... which means that it has already been formatted and a folder has been on this Lun... is that what I need to do first before you add the datastore Lun?  and if so, do, I use to see and format the drive and the folder where can I choose / set up?

    • The box check mark that read mounting NFS only means what?

    • ... Should name of the data store I put the name I've seen who sees esxi (if I chose the other option when I select ' disk/Lun"instead of Network File System)?

I'm stuck at this point and don't know what to fill in here.  I want to install openfiler and use the LUNS with 2 extensions to a 4 GB card (or should I just let separate, even though my comment above also indicate) as storage location and power access from systems virtual OS I installed, but also computers in local network and set up further access on portions of internet/files to this storage.  I understand there are many ways to mounting configurations, and that's why I tried to give as much information as I could so that someone can give me some answers above questions, direct examples or suggestions.

Also, is it all the other important issues that I have to review after I get this set-up?  I know I have to work on setting up my quad for grouping, another thing network ports?

If it's a local storage on disk/Lun. If vsphere detects the LUN that you then will be then prompted to format. BTW. You need to 2 TB - 512 KB by size of the LUN.

NFS is only applicable if you have an NFS server with externally connected storage, that's why you're being invited with so many settings to connect.

  • Need help with the data storage store, local array and network connections

Need help with my ESXi 4.1 installation

    My hardware:

I built a server with an Asus P6T whitebox, i7 920, 12 Gig RAM, NIC, Intel Pro1000 PT Quad, 3ware 9650SE-12ML with 8 1.5 TB SATA green in a raid 6 array gives me about 8 + TB with a spare drive all housed within a NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server chassis.  I also have a 500 GB SATA drive which will hold the ESXi and virtual machines.

The network includes a firewall, Netgear Prosafe FVS336G, GS724Tv of Netgear ProSafe 24 port Gigabit Managed Switch on a dhcp cable modem internet service provider.

I also have 2 old NetGear SC101T NAS disks (4to) I want to connect to the system how some - at a later date have... data on them and want to transfer to the new storage array. I always looking into the question of whether they will work with ESXi 4.1, or I might have to only access it through Windows XP.

    My Situation:

I have already installed ESXi 4.1 and vsphere client with no problems and it is connected to a dhcp cable internet service.  I've set up host via a dynamic DNS service name give me a static hostname on the internet.  I installed three machines to virtual OS successfully at the moment and now want to first start by creating a multimedia storage server which will use some of this new 8 TB array, then separate data storage for use with a web server small overhead storage and a backup.  It is a domestic installation.

Help with the data store and network:

I was doing some reading, because I'm new to this, and it looks like I'll probably want to set up my table via ESXi as a nfs disk format.  Now, the data store is usually in another physical box from what I understand, but I put my readers and ESXi all in the same box.  I'm not sure that the best way to put in place with grouped network cards, but I want to make this work.

I understand that in ESXi 4.1 using iSCSi LUN must be less than 2 TB, but nfs - I should be able to add a bigger partition then 2 TB (for my multimedia) in nfs, right? or should I still add it separately as a separate 2 TB drives and then extend them to get the biggest space.

Any suggestions or direct resources showing examples on how to actually add some parts of the table as data warehouses separate nfs.  I know that to go to the configuration tab, and then select Add to storage, and then select nfs. I have not my picture, but it's here that I don't know what to do because ESXi 4.1 system already has an address, should I put the same thing to the new data store array also (will it work?), and what should I use for the name of the folder and the store of data... just do something to the top.  I thought to later install Openfiler (for a multimedia storage using this table server) as a virtual machine, use the table with esxi so that I can access the same storage space with widows and linux-based systems.

I also know I have to find a way to better use my quad nic card... put in place of virtual switches, grouping, etc HELP?

Any direction, assistance, similar facilities to sample, suggestions or resources that would help would be great. I did a lot of hunting, but still a little confused on how to best to put in place.

You must think of VMDK files of large databases with records of random size guest go read some data (a DLL or an INI file), maybe write some data back, then go read other data. Some files are tiny, but certain DLLs are several megabytes. It's random i/o all and heavy on the search time. IO Opsys is small random operations that are often sequential (go read data, write data, go read other data,...) so that deadlines are critical to the overall performance. That's why people say OPS are / s of reference and forget the MBs flow. The only time where you bulk transfers are when you read media (ISO files).

Well, now forget all this. Actually the disk activity will depend on the specific applications (database? mail server? machines compiler?), but the above is true for boots, and whenever applications are idle. You should see the profile to know.

RAID 10 is faster (and often more reliable) than RAID 5 or RAID-6 except in certain specific cases. In General RAID 10 is ideal for many random writes, since the calculation of parity for RAID-5 and - 6 adds to the overall latency between command and response - latency is cumulative if a little slow here and a little slow it adds up to a lot of overall slow synchronous especially with e/s on a network. OTOH RAID-5 and -6 can produce faster readings due to the number of heads, so you can use it for virtual machines that transfer bulk. Test. You may find that you need several different types subdashboards for best results.

You said 3ware, they have some good grades on their site, but don't believe it. With my 9650 that I found myself with only a couple of their recommendations-, I put the (simple) table for allocation size 256 k, nr_requests at 2 x the queue_depth and use the planner date limit. I had the habit for the Ext4 file system formatted with stride and stripe-width synced to the table and used the options large_files with fewer inodes (do not use the huge_files option unless you plan to have single VMDK files in the terabyte range). Use a cache of great reading in advance.

Virtual machines use VMDK files in all cases except raw iSCSI LUN that they treat native disks. VMDK is easier to manage - you can make a backup by copying the file, you can move it to a PC and load it into another flavour of VMware, etc. There could be some features iSCSI to your San as a transparent migration but nothing for me. NFS has less chatter of Protocol if latency lower times to complete an operation. NFS is good to read and write a block of data, that's all it boils down to.

UPS is good, but it won't help if something inside the machine explodes (UPS does nothing if the PC power supply goes down). If the RAID card has an option for a battery backup module, so it can contain some writings in memory and may end up the disk i/o after replacing the power supply. 3ware also limits the types of caching available if help is not installed, and you get just the right numbers with the module.

  • Lenovo D20 GTX 1080 SC plus Random closures - also, what are these thermal sensors?

I have a Lenovo D20 workstation, I upgraded my GTX660 to a GTX1080 and started having some weird random offs of the power system.

I bought the card on October 21 to run Civ 6 better, fine installed map and ran for three days without any problem.

The third day, the system itself off the power run game. No BSOD, no warning of any kind, just don't click off.

Done a lot of troubleshooting and seemed to track down for a thermal problem, because once I did a full clean and system fans and back together, everything worked...

Flash forward another 2 weeks, mid-game Civ 6, stop at random one another down. System still clean as a whistle...

It's now a battle since to maintain the system for more than a few days sometimes for a few minutes as it will at the same time more and more.  Last hour of Gears of War 4, exactly the same task.  Thinking it is thermal, I upgraded to something bigger heatsinks (fans work normally same towers / etc), system is now 20 degrees cooler and I still get the random low stop...

Thought that's current partner, if I traded in my PSU I have for my box of spare prod... No effect.

Thought the card was dead, so I traded in my old GTX660, the system worked flawlessly...  Swapped the D20 1080 another that I have here, and it worked perfectly fine solid launch an automated Civ game 3 days...  Swapped the 1080 in my D20, worked for another 3-4 hours, then click power off.

I continue to roaming to heat I have some temporary sensors which seem to put the wrong mistakes, I have one that always is at about 128C called "Remote1" 2 other D20, I have here do not have this sensor, I literally stripped everything out of the box and the sensor "remote1" remains.  Where is it?  (see attached photo)

HW_Monitor shows my CPU nice and cool... SpeedFan shows a CPU @ 31 c and the other at 101 c, the two seem well in HW monitor. Am I an overheating? OR am I not?

Here is my complete listing of the system:

    D20

    2 x X 5675-3, 06 Ghz

    48 GB DDR3 RAM

    GTX1080 HC 8GB

    LSI/3ware 9650SE RAID card w/5x3TB

Kingston 240 GB SSD (boot drive)

    I did the following diagnosis:

Added new radiators - thermal. (Works great with GTX660, not with the 1080).

Re-sitting all the RAM, I even changed a lot.  Memtest passes.

I removed the RAID card and associated hard disks. (I thought that's where they get "Remote1".)  It isn't.).

I tried the two 16 x slots in the system.

I ran a full stress test using the handbrake and P95 to try to make the system draw as much power as possible to stress the CPU/PSU/MEM, wanted to test the GPU at the same time so I ran a civ 5 automated and civ 6 interactive game. It ran for several hours and clicked itself turned off AFTER I had finished the stress on the CPU... (I killed the brake hand and P95 and just got Civ execution).

I swapped the power supply with a known good unit.

I placed the 1080 in a solid known D20 chassis, no problem.

I checked the mobo for swelling / leaks / breath caps. No there that I can see.

I ran the sound system high mode and fan speed used same used maximally all fans, always off System... All time seemed cool except "Remote 1". Read local 66 c.

I changed the bars that I use.

I changed the wall outlets that I use.

I entirely cleaned the system and all associated fans.

I tried ALL video pilots...  I have done so of restorations and clean installs Windows bored me.

Windows provides no newspaper except to say "power has been removed from the system or the system became unresponsive.

BIOS is like a power failure and will reboot the system (once I put it to turn on automatically).

I'm at the point where I'm going to empty the entire chassis and start over again because its so intermittent and so random that I can't pinpoint the problem.  When you look at Speedfan, the a 'CPU' that says its 101 c, when he goes to 110 c, that seems widely when the system will be eager to stop, he stopped at a few times and 115C, but HW_Monitor still reads the CPU is also nice and cool, with cores running between 35-40 degrees Celsius, not anywhere near 100 101 c...

I spent several hours on it and still can't seem to find answers that are concrete...

Someone at - it ideas?  Someone has ideas on what/where all these thermal probes are?

Can someone give me any ideas would be great...

    Hello

First of all, thank you guys for getting back to me so fast, I know that you guys must be flooded and I really appreciate your support on my aging material.  You are a credit to your teams.

So I'm in the mode full tinker now, and as I am not under warranty, it is not as if I had nothing to lose = D.

I think I have tracked down the problem - but I said at least 6 times in the last few weeks.

The EVGA GTX SC 1080 has a metal radiator that runs the length of the card, these fins are exposed along the law and the length as a vent along all sides of the map, the side exposed to the door frame and the side which is exposed to the motherboard. There are also a few air holes in the top (bottom?) of the map. When the GTX 1080 is seated in the slot 16 first x, all the heat from the back of the card is discharged directly on the North Bridge heat sink.  This seems to be what it heats up a lot, and why the 660 fact ever, the events don't go anywhere near him.   In fact, I removed my GPU right after a stop down and the NB heatsink was hot touch was a 3 degree burn.

so I tied a 40mm fan on the heatsink to the Northbridge PCI, he turns to 4000-5000 + rpm and managed to cool the heatsink about 30 degrees, it starts as 65 degrees rather than 95 and revolves around 82-85 under a load of game...

I'll keep you posted on the tests.

  • I can list pools of resources via a command line tool?

I'm trying to find out if I can understand if a virtual computer is in a resource pool by using a line of remote control. This could be easier than getting a list pools of resources available on a host, or if a virtual machine is a member of a pool of resources. Any ideas anyone?

I tried the tools provided with vmware-viperl (guestinfo.pl and vminfo.pl) and vmware-cmd (as well as other tools that were not even close).

    Thank you.

Take a look at this script that retrieves this information without having to use the unsupported ESXi console: getVMsResourcePools.pl

You will need to install the vSphere SDK for Perl OR use [vMA | http://www.VMware.com/support/Developer/Vima/index.html ]
