  I would say it looks like a more serious problem, if only the battery would be defective, then the laptop should still work using the AC adapter only but it doesn t so it looks like motherboard or similar problem

  Have you tried a soft-reset/reboot to see if that gets it to start? Press and hold the home button and sleep for about 10 to 15 seconds, then the Apple logo will appear if all is well and it will start.
