  Safety is always a difficult question to answer. Certainly the stuff to Add - ons.mozilla.org (AMO) go through a process of code by the moderators control it.   Take the time to use a magnifying glass and a flashlight. This will allow you to deepen the port easier. Then use a toothpick to see if you can dislodge any dirt, dust, lint etc.  The way you describe forcing the connector into the port, you can very well have force debris in too far to be deleted.

  You may need to take an appointment-Genius Bar at the Apple Store nearest to have the device examined. It is the port that is damaged/non-functional, then the phone will be replaced.
