8 drive raid 5 or 50, and SATA3 vs SATA2

Have a SATA3 RAID with SATA3 readers card will be significantly higher then a SATA2 RAID/HD configuration? Or if I have enough disks in a RAID, SATA2 disks will be good enough?

If I have 8 drives on a RAID card (I have the Adaptec 6805 in mind), regardless if it is SATA2 or SATA3 and whatever the final capacity, it is advantageous to have a 8 RAID-5 disk (7 data + 1 parity) performance, or 8 drive RAID-50 (3 data + 1 parity), multiplied by 2?

Regarding storage benefits, in a reasonable 'ideal' world, having an 8 drive RAID, it will be perfect to have everything in the same RAID (apart from the disk to Boot and applications, of course). Or be a separate RAID (4 x cheap HDs in RAID-0, for example) for export, Cache and swap file, something which is better?  On the other hand, if I already have 12 drives in the case, would not be a single disc 12 RAID handle all the necessary flow?

PS: I work a lot with uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit, image sequences and sequences of AVC-Intra. Where my band need disk bandwidth.

Frederic,

The main difference between on one hand and raid3 raid5 / raid4 however is distributed by report dedicated to parity.

All three raid formats are very good, but in some cases, it may be preferred over the other.

What is the difference between dedicated or distributed parity?

In the case of distributed parity, a reconstruction of the table requires W actions on all players.

In the case of dedicated parity, a rebuild will require actions on all drives minus one W.

For that reason, the reconstruction will be more effective with a dedicated with distributed parity parity. RAID3/4 are more effective with new buildings than raid5.

ATTO is a rather unknown to consumers, but they are the only one to offer raid4.

Areca is relatively well known, even among consumers and are the only ones offering raid3.

You mentioned 12 discs, so with this in mind, I made my suggestion for an alternative configuration.

As far as I know this model doesn't support this type of material

I think that you need drivers for the SATA controller. This package is called Intel Storage Manager and can be downloaded from the official website of Toshiba.

I tried the dell chat, but could not get anywhere, as the helpdesk agent does not seem to know that you can google some caddy and buy the caddy to adapt to discs with no carts.

[murmur] I'm wrong :), but I think the H200 supported not RAID, so if left unconfigured, the disks will be seen by the operating system as the person/no RAID disks.  Also, if I am wrong not :), the H200 supports a maximum of 2 virtual drives, so would not work two 1-disk RAID 0 and a RAID 1 (in fact, it probably won't allow you to create a single drive RAID 0 in all). • replacing a drive RAID 1 failure in PowerEdge T710

I just got the disk(146GB) of replacement for one of the disks RAID 1 has failed. I would like to know what the best approach is to replace the defective with the new one (same size), now that the spare drive (300 GB) is used by the raid. I want to get the bigger drive and re - assign as a global hot spare, by the original configuration is possible without disconnecting the server?

    Here is my config:

    T710 Server (8 discs - 4 X 146 GB, 4 x 300 GB)

    PERC H700 integrated

    2x146GB drives - RAID 1

    2x146GB drives - RAID 1

    3x300GB drive - RAID 5

    1 x 300 GB disk - hot spare

    Thank you.

This should work for you. What it will do is essentially the same process I described. When you insert the replacement drive and implement the Member to replace it will fail then the immediate replacement and then start reconstruction on replacement.

  • Adding a new drive of 1 TB Adaptec2610SA and esxi 3.5.0

    Hello

    It's really confusing to me.

I have a system that works for 2 years now.

I have 2 drives raided and work in my esx 3.5.0 on my HP Proliant ML115 G5 server. I has been working perfectly without any problems.

I wanted to add a few more storage so I boughty myself a whole new drive 1 TB and set everything off and put it in.

Went up in the utility RAID at startup and makes sure that I could see, but not a not joining the existing raid array as I just wanted to use as 1 additional storage room.

Anyway to cut a long story short, - punt in esxi, has launched the customer infrastructure and went to the storage adapter expecting to see here. NO.

Therefore a new analysis and NOTHING.

Put and old 40 GB drive to and bingo she appeared right. (this player may have been formatted, but that's the only difference I could think off the power)

The new Terabyte disk in and nothing new.

    Any ideas.

Y at - it sort of command line hardcore scan I can do to force his apperarance.

    Thank you.

    Neil

Did you create a new table with the single disk. The controller do not know, but I think that you must have a table before being transmitted.

  • RAID-understanding of"relief" and Windows reinstall - final stages

    Hi all

If you follow the couple of my other recent threads here you will see that I have a warning of a disk failing in my 4 TB raid (raid set 4 x 1 TB).

Also, for some reason unconnected with I also need to reinstall Windows 7.  (and of course my Adobe Master collection CS5)

I ordered a player to serve as a 'Rescue' 5th and it will happen some time today from Amazon.

I want to assure you do correctly, the above "final" steps in the right order.

I based my "final steps" on the advice of harm on another thread:

    > > >

You can never be too sure with data, but if you follow the rescue, extend the raid set and rebuild the sequence, it is not necessary. Your data will be automatically reconsructed. This is the reason why you use a raid3/5.

Your log file is a specific show a serious disk problem. Replace it, create a hot spare, extend your raid and reconstruction (it should be done automatically) and you're ready to roll

    > > > >

(As a precaution, I made a backup of my raid on an external drive)

So once my new hard drive arrives today on Amazon, I will, in the following order:

    (1) Replace hard drive fault.  (I have to turn off the computer to remove the failed hard drive and replace it with the hot spare?  Or I can leave the computer on for software raid to continue his CONSISTENCY CHECK as HE do all the steps to rebuild the raid - see note at the bottom of this post...)

    (2) create the hot spare

    (3) use the (Areca) Raid Controller software to EXTEND the hot SPARE

    (4) raid rebuild (it should be done automatically)

THEN, after I confirm the raid works fine, I'll

    (5) reinstall Windows 7.

The step below is what I'm not quite clear on:

    (6) I guess that since the raid has been rebuilt {(avant j'ai fait le windows 7 réinstaller) I can do a very simple 'reconnect' for work already raid.}  In other words, I would like to reinstall the Areca raid software (using the cd of Areca) and identify the raid and windows 7 will recognize the raid 4 TB as my raid drive.

I am tracking the delivery of my new hard drive and there are at least 5 or 6 hours of his arrival from Amazon.

CONSISTENCY NOTE: I have time I'll have the Areca controller software based on the web to do a CONSISTENCY check of the raid.

It is to halfway through control and found 144 errors so far.   Consistency checking is rather vague about what he does.  But can I assume it is to find errors and correct them automatically.

Or what I need to do something to correct errors once the consistency check is finished (this is one of the reasons why I want to avoid turning off the power during the reconstruction of the raid).  Or create the hot spare, etc will interrupt the consistency checking, which means that I have to complete verification of consistency was completely before you rebuild the raid.

Or should I give up the consistency checking and after do I have to reinstall windows.  (If possible I would like to do this so I can with my current project!)

    PHEW!

What happens when a disc falls down during a parity raid?

    RAID3:

RAID3 uses a dedicated parity disk. When a disk in the raid fails, it can be a data reader or a parity. If a data drive fails and is replaced, the failure data must be restored by the remaining disks, especially from the parity disk. If the parity disk fails, all to do is to rebuild the data parity of original drive.

    RAID5:

Used RAID5 parity distributed, so when a disk fails, data and parity must be rebuilt on this disc. He must rebuild the data from the other parity disks and then rebuild the parity on the other data disks. Which includes a treatment more complex in a raid3 and that is why reconstruction takes more time than in a raid3.

Reonstructing the reader has no impact on the operating system and reinstalling the operating system has no impact on the raid. Just make sure that the raid is working properly and that you have the McRasid software available for installation.

  • Driver chipset for A60-122 and Windows XP Pro

    Hi all.
I'm trying to upgrade my Satatellite A60 - 122 win XP Home Edition to Win XP Pro.
I downloaded the new version of the drivers that I need after the installation of operating system directly from the site, I also download and print the order to put them in my computer, but the first item is already a problem: THE CHIPSET UTILITY.
First of all, I expect to supply the operating system with the Chipset driver, not utilities.
Then I looked everywhere chiset driver, but nothing.
I also called the Italian help asking about the Center. The only thing that they where able to give me was the code number which is ATRS250M + SB200-(1XP150); It's the only thing that the operator had, not even the name of chipset (intel I guess but which?) and it's not chipset name for sure.
    So... the question is:
Where can I download the correct chipset driver? I know that www.intel.com is the answer, but what chipset is used in my notebook?
Is the utility chipset drivers or not?
Where they are... they do not work, as soon as I start, the program says that it has detected the wrong OS and then it closes. Well, I know that Toshiba loaded only the Home version, but...
Can someone help me with this?

    Hello

I can understand that you're a little irritated, but there is no reason for this. I hope that I can help you.

First of all, I assume that you have the Tools & Utilities CD and there are all the drivers you need for your laptop. Do not download all the drivers. All the drivers on your CD should work with Windows XP Home edition Professional. Order of installation is important, but it is known to you. I don't know, but the order of installation is also described somewhere on this CD.

What is interesting to me is what CD do you use to install the OS? Is this the full version of Microsoft?

I must also say that you cannot wait you become a pilot with OS. OS and chipset driver are two different things, and they belong together.

I repeat that you should not download anything. Install the OS and then install the display driver, chipset driver, driver sound and so on.

Try again and if you have some problems let me know.

    Good bye

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above, and then select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of NIS 2011 (using your product ID, if need be) & reboot. CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN
