A luminosity mask

I recently discovered the ability of Photoshop CS + to select for the brightness and then make adjustments affecting the brighter tones in a way that is much better than other methods of selection.  It has been implemented with the following keys (alt/option, control + 2).

Is there a 'solution' in the items to accmplish this selection?

Mary Lou

As explained by R_Kelly,

  1. Copy the image to the Clipboard.
  2. Add a levels adjustment layer.
  3. ALT-click on the mask of the levels adjustment layer to display the mask in the edit box.
  4. Paste your image in the editing area.  It will automatically come as an image in grayscale (a Luminance mask).
  5. Use enhance... Adjust lighting... Levels (Ctrl + L) to open a levels for the mask of the luminance adjustment and move the sliders for the pixels that you want to assign become white and the other pixels become black (or as close as you can get).
  6. Click your layer of the image to display the full color image in the editing area.
  7. Now you can adjust the levels adjustment layer settings, by moving the sliders to reduce the brightness of the brightest pixels.

For example, in view of the original image:

I've adjusted the levels of the Luminance mask so that only the brightes pixels will be affected and also painted in black on the skin so it would not be affected.  (Otherwise there is an unpleasant color shift...)  Luminance mask looks like this:

The layers in liquidation that looks like this:

And the result:

  • Is it possible to make an image from a channel? I like the way one of my luminosity masks look and I want to make a picture. (PSCC)

How can I make a mask that is sitting in the range of channels and make a picture of it?

There are several ways to do this and here are just two of them.

    1. If you want to make a new image, you can right click on the channel, click on dual channel and less Destination > Document, select new

    2. If you want to add a new layer in your document, click the channel in the Panel layers, go to Select > all the, and then Edit > copy, click RGB in the Panel layers then Edit > paste

  • Mask brightness problem

Basically when I edit my star photos, I use luminosity masks to target the stars or the milky way only. And sometimes I create a similar brightness 5 just to get the really bright stars without affecting the rest of the image. But that is the problem. When I chose to merge all layers before the economy, the brightness in the stars down until they were before, I applied the masks, so that did not help at all. But when I use the luminosity masks to target other things like the sky or dark colors, they stay the same, when I merge layers. And I tried to click and mark all the masks and then choose 'merge these layers' and that worked, but when I saved the file, it will return to normal and the stars lose their luster when recording.

    What can be the problem?

    / Christian

Here is an illustration of the problem. Half upper is just white dots on a black background. No tonal adjustment here will have No effect. White is always white and black remains black, regardless of what you do.

But what you can do use a brightness mask and expand / feather it lightly. Then, you can lift only. What you do is essentially create a halo.

Once you have your mask, you must attack the black top - e.g. raise the slider out of black in a levels adjustment. A setting of the midtones will still have no effect. But this time, you can raise black without affecting the whole image.

  • Low light of 8 masks?

Are the selections through Kuyper luminosity masks 8 bits in a 16-bit space?

I think that's Jeff Schewe that got any dynamic selection in Photoshop ("dotted mobile") once you make an adjustment to them, become 8-bit, even in a space of 16 bits.  I asked the question years ago because I thought that very real Posterization in my treated 16-bit extensions. As soon as I weaned the masks, the Posterization abandoned...

    Thank you in advance.

Channels & layer masks is 16-bit in a document of 16 bits... active selections are still only 8 bits.

  • Masks of brightness - cannot change the areas 'masked' by themselves

I try to use luminosity masks in CS 5 Windows 7. I can create masks (there are enough tutorials on this part of the process) but when it comes to the use of curves to lighten/darken each mask, the entire image is affected. When I click on the BW cookie for the settings, a layer that adaptation is created, but the curves icon does not appear as I've seen and read about.

In addition, when a mask is clicked on the RGB channel area, the new layer does not seem to align with the selected masks (1 light, 2 lights, etc.).

My photography is mainly the work of railway and the sky is often a problem with too much light.

I used Nikon but now have an Olympus L10... photos of both of them are good but want to change for all around goodness.

    BW cookie

What is that supposed to be?

the curves icon does not appear as I've seen and read about.

    The settings panel is open?

In addition, when a mask is clicked on the RGB channel area, the new layer does not seem to align with the selected masks (1 light, 2 lights, etc.).

You seem to try to verbally explain what could more easily be explained / showed issuing some screenshots.

can you explain or even post an action please?

There is a filter named "HSB/HSL" that allows to convert a layer between STL, RGB and HSL color models. Who will give you the hue and saturation of the channels you can adjust and intersect to make masks of saturation to the beaches of shade limited in the RGB image. Or you can use Select > color range and cross his selection with a saturation channel.

The filter is an optional download for CS5 and CS6. (I don't know about previous Photoshop).

  • Applying the exact same montage of two photos in Lightroom

I put my camera on my tripod and take several pictures with different exposure settings so that I can combine them in Photoshop through masks of brightness.

Suppose that I took two pictures (A & B) with different exposure in my lightroom settings.

    This is my workflow:

    1. apply the Lens Correction in Lightroom for A & B

    2. apply the transformation using my guides customized in Lightroom for A & B

3 export A & B in the form of layers in Photoshop

    4. apply luminosity masks and to merge these two layers for a final image.

Currently, I struggle to apply the same guides accurate for step 2, because I have to manually draw these lines myself.

Is there a way to apply the same settings to the step 1 and 2 directly to two images?

After you apply the vertical tour on one of the photos, just sync turns it up for the other photos, selecting photos, ensuring that your corrected image is the selected time/all, click Sync, and then ensure that turns up is the only selected item in the transformation.  Of course if you made other adjustments to one and not the other you selected those other institutions, but transforms standing is one who guided a copy through the vertical adjustments:

  • When a photo has for example a bright sky beside the dark object, using lights and shadows can cause a 'halo' or double edge to appear. How can I avoid this?

When a photo for example has a bright sky next to the dark object, using lights and shadows to reduce high contrast can cause a 'halo' or double-edge to appear. How can I avoid this?

From my experience, this isn't a problem that has a simple solution, such as moving a slider or a combination of the sliders in LR. It requires rather a major change in the technique, at the unit or in office. Some pros (I am not one) tire ALWAYS support HDR or this reason - better transition from highlights to shadows, then tweak the image with much less "heavy" necessary. Another popular technique is the luminosity masking and blending in PS. There is a ton of information on this topic (just do a search on Youtube), but it's not easy to learn or do, but it can eliminate this problem.

  • No fade not available after Unsharp mask

I have an action I use successfully for several years, notably with the PS CS5 64-bit.  Part of the action is an emphasis, then using Fade Unsharp Mask it changes brightness mode.

Now I suddenly find that it does not work on some images... telling me that the 'Fade' command is not available.  Even if I do these commands manually (without the action and do anything else) bland is gray out and not available.

Everything still works fine with my 'normal' images, which are files TIFF 16 bits converted from RAW with Capture One Pro.  These files are approximately 125 mb in size.  The image where I first noticed this problem was a multi point recorded in a PSB (almost 600 mb in size) file.  Then, I created a file PSD of this image (155 MB) and BLAND was still not available.

And no, I do not have ANYTHING between performing the Unsharp mask and try to find BLAND in the Edit menu.

I tested this during more than an hour now (on two different computer facilities, as well running CS5 64-bit and Win7 64 bit) and other than the size of the file, I don't see anything else.

The file size might have nothing to do with this?  That's the only difference I see between an image work and not another job.

(I am aware that I could use the layers palette to change the blending mode to luminosity, but it won't solve my problem).

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

    Eldor

You can not Fade bound a command on a layer that has a layer mask. You have to UN-link the layer mask to the layer pixel before fade is enabled...

  • The mask purple of the private browsing mode, where is it?

    Hello!
I installed Firefox 42.0 on my PC running Windows 7 SP1 32 bit and it is stable. But the purple mask, the novelty of the private browsing mode, does not work in the following scenarios. I don't see the purple mask on top of windows.

1 right-click on the "Mozilla Firefox" shortcut, and then select Properties. Add ""-private "at the end of the area target;" \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"- private.

2 tools > Options > privacy > history, click on the box "always use the private browsing mode.

    Do you have any advice?

    Best regards
    BluePencil

You will see the purple mask if Firefox is in normal mode and you open a new private window.
If you are in permanent private browsing mode, so there is no need to display the icon and it is deleted.

You can use an extension for private browsing mode support tab.

  • Lock the position of the mask in FCPX?

I have an image I want to move from right to left (I'm trying to simulate someone hit to swipe an image on their phone). But I need to be masked so that when the image is moved, it is not just move from one place to the screen to the other (it must be enclosed in a mask). When I apply a mask in FCPX the mask moves with the image. I have to be able to stop it. Is it possible to do? It seems like the simplest thing in the world, but I don't see how it can be done. And Yes, I tried keyframing the mask but because his move with the image, it is dragged in every sense. If the movement is necessary so how would I do it in motion?

    Thank you

    You don't need a movement.

Create the animated clip of right to the Center - stop - center to the left. Create a clip consisting of it and add the mask to the compound clip.

  • How can I use A clip to create a mask for clip B?

Hello. I am having trouble with my project.

I have a video with subtitles and subtitle down background. The subtitle is at 50% opacity, you can therefore still a bit see through it. I want to make it look slick and apply the blur of the main home, but only the part that is covered by the bottom of subtitle. I can't draw the mask manually, because real captions and background are animated, so if I had to draw the mask manually I have to go frame by frame, which would take me literally days.

I hope I did my clear explanation. If this isn't the case, basically, I need to clip one area allows you to create an area of masking to another clip. The clip is also animated, so the mask must adapt accordingly. I tried to find a solution for hours without success.

    Thank you in advance.

It is not very clear to me, but you seem to be saying that the subtitle background is animated, somehow? Is this true?

Its size will vary depending on the actual size of the subtitles, isn't it?

And you want the area of the main element which, at one point throws behind this background to subtitle the blur?

  • Apple Motion freezes when creating new Bézier points on masks

    Hi people,

Having a problem with the movement 5.2.3.

When you use the Bézier tool while creating masks, about 7/10 times it crashes without saving changes when you create a new point.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

    Thank you

I do not see a problem. How many points you use in your mask? You do a right click on the line and selecting Add a Point or by double-clicking on the line when it crashes? You start with a Bezier or B-Spline form?
