A much improved car-mount: the Media Station

Three weeks of driving around, constantly having to play with ropes, taken to plug-in the hard micro-usb, strained to see the text in small characters, to reach too high and too far away to hit the tiny icons - and several other annoyances, today I let fall on the Motorola Droid car mount, and took the multimedia Station in the car.

I opened a retractable tray on my dashboard (Audi A6) and a rubber band later took the Motorola Droid Media securely fixed Station in an ideal position for driving. Connect a retractable charger cable (which allows a perfect tension cord) in to the dock and put to rout the wire almost invisibly on the dock.

Here I use a beige elastic so you can see how you hold firmly to the shelf/drawer...

Below, I use a black elastic (headband) and

now, the installation becomes safe and "invisible"...

Now, finally, entering into the car I can simply place the droid in the dock: instantaneous power and correct orientation of the screen.

During the passage of the car, I just pick up the Droid and on foot:

The Droid is more in the way of my conduct.

The touchscreen is now more than 5 "and 3" closer to my right hand that witnesses to my car radio. In my car, it's the ideal position to be able to safely use the Droid as a GPS device and one-touch speakerphone.

Because the unit is in the Media Station, the screens are view of landscape.

including the keyboard of the phone and contacts.

When you drive along, the Media-Station screen is seductive and contains useful information.

One touch and the regular home screen appears in all its splendour of the landscape orientation. Running the app MODE drive puts the phone in speaker mode as soon as I answer a call.

It is how the droid should be used in a car.

(YouTube video of the above photos)

Looks like I might have a real reason to abandon my Garmin Nuvi now (and I fear no longer have to answer or make a call while driving.)

Can't wait to make a more elegant solution (clips) to keep the Station from established media.

or at least get a rubberband black; )

UPDATE 12/20/09: rubberband replaced with a black elastic band in all of them but #1 (so you can see the mounting)

DockRunner puts the phone in multimedia editing mode - which is not necessary as this "p I m p my droid' project uses the frame of media.

Car App puts the phone in car mode - which * is * necessary because this isn't the car holder.

OP has done this in the first place because car mounting, you must connect the phone to the power, to remove the phone you need to untangle it mount AND unplug it. Media support requires just lift the phone, is much easier.

I found that by using a USB drive self-powered, as the WD My Passport, without a USB powered, hub attached to the base of the station USB port has caused the base station go "off-line". In fact, using a powered hub does not always remedy the situation, but it is more reproducible without one.

This is true for the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule 802.11ac. The problem does not occur immediately, but it may happen over several days. The symptom is that the player is no longer lies in the Finder, or the base station appears in AirPort Utility.

My question is if others have had the same results? ... and did you find permanent solutions?

USB key "seems" less reliable on the airports of AC model than on previous versions.

I tend to not use USB attached to routers because I think it's convenient mediocre and poor speeds. But I tested with previous models, and it seems ok...

KT those a few posts here a me trial there. These are not self powered readers... who I have long recommended people avoid the use (without a powered hub)...

Re: External backup drive down regularly

In fact, the wire is different from what I remember... Age don't you know.

But I did the test on an AC TC. The result has been very reliable. He did not cause the TC to close... but I lost the connection of the USB almost every day... except for a trial where I kept the USB drive mounted in the Finder... so that the USB drive wouldn't turn it down. He then worked for a few weeks... until what the noise of rotation of disk (sitting next to me) drove me crazy... as soon as he was mounted is more, he would pass the same existence as before.

The previous model TC was barely big enough for the internal use of the power supply units. So powered car running disc was impossible.

Provide EI (GEN 1-5) at 1. 8A and 12v was adequate, but the standard USB port is estimated at 500 my wrong to manage disks free power.

You would certainly think AC 12v 5A power supply models would have a lot of power. Yet, power problems are a major problem still. Supply is extremely sensitive and stop easily for reasons I'm still to understand.

Where the long threads on power issues to the AE.

Now, I'm going to speculate... I think that SOME problems are associated with power.

What is the USB port side in airports of AC? Is it still 500ma? Apple never seem to give easy to find info on these details.

Do you know? I haven't measured it, but I can try timing the time it takes to charge a phone.  Assuming that it will immediately trigger.

Then he will have problems with a self-powered drive. Even if the drive has less energy than quotes, current during starting is much higher. The restriction of the power on the USB port is managed by a self regulator recovery... Once you triggered it, you must stop the power... then reboot the machine to restore power.

Then, I also did the test with hub powered... and like your results... It was better. Longer time between the drive disappears from the network. But it was not enough to stop it.

There is another interesting effect using self-powered hubs... I discovered this on a computer running Mac OS lets say! The computer would not start with a powered hub connected to the front USB. Hubs self-powered cheap, showing a defect in their design. They can refer to the USB port. In this computer, it was enough to stumble on the good power circuit and prevent the supply, commissioning... As long as the computer is running, everything was fine... but if I turned off it would not start. I finally woke up I had to exit the USB every time. At one point, I made a "special" Cup USB cable 5v line so the hub can stay connected. You can probably just to isolate the 5v of contact in the USB. Regardless of the configuration of power USB in the AE or TC is as you can assume she's sensitive enough... and at any time when the 5V on USB hub exceeds the 5V in AE it could trigger.

The symptom is that the player is no longer lies in the Finder, or the base station appears in AirPort Utility.

Endangered of AU base station is not uncommon.

  • Should we leave how much free space on the C drive before affecting the performance and speed?

    Hello!

Hard drive of my new PC (C) is 1 TB (processor Samsung 7i, Windows 8.1). It doesn't have any other disk/partition. How this space is safe to use to store large files (videos, esp., stored in the native video library file) without harming the performance and speed?

And if I create another partition (D) and just use it for storage, it will make much difference compared to the above?

    Thank you!

    Planning your Partitions

    The Question

Partitions, how much should I have on my hard drive, what do I use
each of them for, and what size should each one be?

It s a common question, but unfortunately this doesn t have a
only simple, just answer to all the world. A lot of people will respond with
the way they do, but their response isn't necessarily best for the
person seeking (in many cases it isn't right even for the person)
    response).

    Terminology

First, let's rethinking the terminology. Some people ask "should I".
partition my drive? That s the wrong question, because the
the terminology is a little strange. Some people think that the word
"partition" means divide the drive into two or more partitions.
That s not correct: to partition a drive is to create one or several
partitions on it. You must have at least one partition to use
He who think they have an unpartitioned disk actually
have a player with only one partition on it and it s normally
Called C:. The choice you have is to have more than one
partition, not that it's the partition at all.

    A bit of history

Back before Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (also known as Windows
95 (b) was published in 1996, all MS-DOS and Windows hard drives have been set
using the file system FAT16 (except for very tiny to aid
FAT12). That 16-bit only because were used for addressing, FAT16 has a
    maximum 2 GB partition size.

More than 2 GB of hard disks were rare at the time, but if you had
one, you must have multiple partitions to use all the available
space. But even if your drive was not larger than 2GB, FAT16 created
Another serious problem for many people - the size of the cluster has been
more great if you had a larger partition. Cluster sizes increased from 512
bytes for a partition to no greater than32Mb all the way up to 32 KB for a
partition of 1 GB or more.

More the cluster size, the space more is wasted on a hard drive.
That s as space for all the files is allocated in whole clusters
only. If you have 32 KB clusters, a 1 byte file takes 32 KB, a file, a
greater than 32 k byte takes 64 k and so on. On average, each file
about half of his last group waste.

If large partitions create a lot of waste (called "soft"). With a 2 GB
FAT16 drive in a single cluster, if you have 10,000 files, each
lose half a cluster of 32 KB, you lose about 160 MB for relationships. This s
back in an important part of a player that probably cost more than $400
    1996 - around $ 32.

So what did the people? They divided their 2 GB drive in two,
three or more logical drives. Each of these logical drives has been
smaller the real physical disk, had smaller clusters, and
so less waste. If, for example, she was able to keep all the partitions
less than 512 MB, cluster size was only 8 KB, and the loss was reduced to a
a quarter of what it would be otherwise.

People partitioned for other reasons also, but back in the days of
FAT16, it was the main reason to do so.

    The present

Three things have changed radically since 1996:

    1. the FAT32 and NTFS file systems came along, allowing a larger
partitions with smaller clusters and so much less waste. In
with NTFS, cluster sizes are 4 K, regardless of the size of the partition.

2 hard drives have become much larger, often more than 1 TB (1000 GB) in
    size.

3 hard drives have become much cheaper. For example, a 500 GB drive
can be bought today for about $50. That s 250 times the size of this
Player 2Gb typical 1996, about one-eighth of the price.

What these things mean together which is the reason to be old to have
multiple partitions to avoid the considerable wastage of disk space left.
The amount of waste is much less than it used to be and the cost of
that waste is much less. For all practical purposes, almost nobody does
should no longer be concerned about slack, and it should no longer be
has examined when planning your partition structure.

What Partitions are used for today

There are a variety of different ways people put in place several
scores of these days. Some of these uses are reasonable, some are
debatable, some are downright bad. I'll discuss a number of Commons
    partition types in the following:

    1. a partition for Windows only

Most of the people who create such a partition are because they believe
If they never have to reinstall Windows properly, at least they
He won t lose their data and he won t have to reinstall their applications.
because both are safe on other partitions.

The first of these thoughts is a false comfort and the second
is downright bad. See the analysis of the types of partition 2 and 4
    below to find out why.

Also note that over the years, a lot of people who find their windows
partition that has begun to be the right size proves to be too
small. For example, if you have such a partition for Windows and later
upgrade to a newer version of Windows, you may find that your Windows
    partition is too small.

    2. a partition for installed programs

This normally goes hand in hand with the partition type 1, a partition for
just Windows. The thought that if you reinstall Windows, your
installed application programs are safe if they are in another
partitions is simply not true. That s because all programs installed
(with the exception of an occasional trivial) have pointers to the inside
Windows, in the registry and elsewhere, as well as associated files
buried in the Windows folder. So if Windows, pointers and
the files go with it. Given that the programs need to be reinstalled if Windows
the fact, this reasoning to a separate partition for programs not
work. In fact, there is almost never a good reason to separate
Windows of the software application into separate partitions.

    3. a partition for the pagefile.

Some people think mistakenly that the pagefile on another
score will improve performance. It is also false; It doesn t
help and often I hurt, performance, because it increases the movement of the head
to get back to the page to another file frequently used
data on the disk. For best performance, the paging file should normally
be on the most widely used score of less used physical player. For
almost everyone with a single physical disk than the same drive s
    Windows is on C:.

    4. a partition for backup for other partitions.

Some people make a separate partition to store backups of their other
or partitions. People who rely on a "backup" are a joke
themselves. It is only very slightly better than no backup at all.
because it leaves you likely to be simultaneously the original losses
and backup for many of the most common dangers: the head crashes and other
types of drive, serious glitches to power failure, near lightning
strikes, virus attack, even stolen computer.  In my opinion,.
secure backup must be on a media removable and not stored in the
    computer.

    5. a partition for data files

Above, when I discussed separate Windows on a clean partition,
I pointed out that separate data from Windows is a false comfort if
He of done with the idea that data will be safe if Windows ever
must be reinstalled. I call it a false comfort that's because
I'm afraid many people will rely on this separation, think that their
data are safe there and so do not take measures to
Back it up. In truth the data is not safe there. Having to reinstall
Windows is just one of the dangers to someone a s hard disk and not
probably even one. This kind of "backup" falls into the same
category, as a backup to other partitions partition; It lets you
sensitive to the simultaneous loss of the original and the backup on many of
the most common dangers that affect the entire physical disk, not
just the particular partition. Security comes from a solid backup
    diet, not how partition you.

However, for some people, it may be a good idea to separate Windows and
programs on the one hand of the data on the other, putting each of the
two types into separate partitions. I think that most people
partitioning scheme must be based on their backup system and backup
plans are generally of two types: whole hard disk imaging
or data only backup. If you back up data, backup is
    usually facilitated by the presence of a separate with data only partition;
to save just the score easily, without having to
collect pieces from here and elsewhere. However, for
those who backup by creating an image of the entire disk, there is
usually little, if any, benefit the separation of data in a partition of
    its own.

Furthermore, in all honesty, I must point out that there are many
very respected people who recommend a separate partition for Windows,
Whatever your backup plan.  Their arguments haven t convinced
me, but there are clearly two views different here.

    6. a partition to image files

Some people like to deal with the images and videos as something separate
other data files and create a separate partition for them. To my
the spirit, an image is simply another type of data and there is no
    the advantage in doing so.

    7. a partition for music files.

The comments above related to the image files also apply to music
files. They are just another type of data and must be dealt with the
    just like the other data.

    8. a partition for a second operating system to dual-boot to.

For those who manage several operating systems (Windows Vista, Windows
XP, Windows 98, Linux, etc.), a separate partition for each operating
system is essential. The problems here are beyond the scope of this
discussion, but simply to note that I have no objection to s
    all these partitions

    Performance

Some people have several partitions because they believe that it
somehow improves performance. That s not correct. The effect is
probably low on modern computers with modern hard disks, but if
whatever it is, the opposite is true: more music mean poorer
performance. That's because normally no partition is full and it
so are gaps between them. It takes time for the drive s
read/write heads to cross these gaps. Close all files
are, faster access to them will be.

    Organization

I think a lot of people overpartition because they use scores as a
organizational structure. They have a keen sense of order and you want to
to separate the apples from the oranges on their readers.

Yes, separating the different types of files on partitions is a
technical organization, but then is to separate different types of
files in folders. The difference is that the walls are static and
fixed in size, while the files are dynamic, changing size automatically
as needed to meet your changing needs. This usually done records
a much better way to organize, in my opinion.

Certainly, partitions can be resized when necessary, but except with the latter
versions of Windows, which requires a third-party software (the and the
possibility to do so in Windows is primitive compared to the third-party
solutions). These third party software normally costs money and not
any point and how stable it is, affects the entire disk.
with the risk of losing everything. Plan your partitions in
first place and repartitioning, none will be necessary.  The need
to repartition usually occurs as a result of overpartitioning in
    the first place.

What often happens when people organize with partitions instead
records are that they make a miscalculation of how much room they need on each
This partition, and then when they run out of space on the partition
When a file is logically, while having plenty of space
on the other hand, they simply saving the file in the score of "poor".
Paradoxically, therefore, results in this kind of score structure
    less organization rather than more.

So how should I partition my drive

If you read what came before, my findings will not come as a
    surprise:

    1. If your backup set is the image of the entire disk, have just one
    single (usually c partition :));

    2. If you backups just data, have two partitions one for Windows and
application programs installed (usually c :)), the other for data
    (normally D :).)

With the exception of multiple operating systems, it is rarely
any advantage to have more than two partitions.

  • mount the partition root to esx 4.1 in rescue livecd mode

Hi guys! I have problem with recovery of esx 4.1 upd 3 Server. To my shame, I deleted /lib64/libc-2.5.so--> link lib64/libc.so.6, then restarted a server. So now, esx makes a core dump and does not start (Kernel panic not syncing kill init). I thought it was a piece of cake to boot from livecd linux, mount the partition root of esx and recreate the link but it was not as simple as that. In rescue of the livecd mode (redhat 5), I can only mount/boot partition for esx. Command fdisk-l shows a single device (/ dev/sda1) with linux fs and other devices sdaX with extended and uknown fs types and mount error on these devices. Mount/dev/sda1 gives me a partition/boot of esx. On another host esx 4.1 with a similar configuration command df shows partition/Boot resides on the device/dev/sdd1 while other partitions as root/var/log are located on/dev/sdeX devices. After having investigated further, I found that/dev/sdd is a local protected by car while/dev/sde does not match any network SAN or raid connected locally to the readers. Tomorrow I will try to boot from the esx installation media and see if there is something simillar to rescue mode and try and do something here. I have no idea what to do if it won't help. In the hope to hear a good advise to you guys!

Do a new installation on a disk SAN and after booting from it, I was able to solve the problem with the link. Old server is running. But after all I agree with you markdjones82 - it would be faster and easier to reinstall from scratch.

  • How can I change the base station Airport of NAT mode?

I'm trying to set up an Airport base station and stuck because I have the following message is displayed, but no idea how do what he asks...

Status is showing as Double NAT and then asking me to move on to the base station in bridge DHCP/NAT mode.

But where do I do this?

    Thank you

It can be difficult to get the router to bridge sometimes... but if all goes well... Click on the airport icon in airport utility and then click on edit.

Go to the network tab and change DHCP and NAT to bridge.

Click Update at the bottom of the page... Then, everything should be good.

If you are having problems follow these steps.

Reset factory airport and then do a manual installation. I recommend that you connect with ethernet which is much more reliable, but your MBPr is not the most important network port that exists... Although there is a bolt of lightning at low cost for the ethernet card.

In any case, since this update, I was unable to play video or audio files using the media player or cut and paste all the items when sorting of files.

All very well before, but now when I pointed out and click "cut", the timer of the cuts and the window goes right to the "not responding". Drag and drop works OK, then go back to delete files.

From there where I bit you have no problem with the laptop but with Microsoft System.

"Hotmail" isn t produced by Toshiba.
If you have problems connecting to the Hotmail account, you must contact Microsoft technical support for help.

By the way: you can always set the system back to the beginning point of time before receiving updates.
Windows 8 creates a point of restoration automatically when Windows updates and other system maintenance events.

Open charm bar (Win key + c), choose the Apps and search for Restore Point. Then click on settings. On the left side, you will see the option called create a restore point.
New window will open. In the System Protection tab, select the system restore.
Clicking next would lead to the next step when you restore the computer to the State it was before the selected event (windows update).

Hi, I managed to record some videos (coming from a VCR) with media Center. I would like to handle videos with software and then burn it to a DVD.

My problem is that I need to be able to view the video with Windows Media Player - is it possible to import the recording of "my videos"?

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

EDIT: anyone know how to know the size of the recordings made with the media library?

    Hello

See this FAQ Toshiba on saved files.

  • No access to the media of the Photo.app to other applications

Hello. I migrated to the Photos.app iPhoto as soon as he was released. The migration process seemed to go well and I have access to all my photos and videos, now in the new Photos.app. The iCloud photo library has also all the pictures. It is all well synchronized. There is a small problem. Applications such as Apple Mail have a multimedia browser that allows you to access photos in the Photos.app. In my case, that some of them are appearing. Example: I have an album in the Photos.app called "funny pictures". It is a at least 100 photos in the album, but in the broser media appear only around six. Other albums are empty. Others seem to be complete.

This support article, I checked: OS x: If you can't see the images in other applications iPhoto - Apple supported and pretty much done all the steps. I say almost because there is a step that requires you to find the AlbumData.xml file and move it to the desktop to force the creation of a new. I opened the package from the photo library, but there was no AlbumData.xml. I checked Macbook Air my wife and she has the file with a bunch of other files preferences and the flea market that I don't have a reason any.

Obviously something is wrong. Apparently the migration process I messed up somehow.

If someone could point me in the right direction, I really appreciate the help.

    GL

If the pictures do not show in the media browser, check, if your current photo library has been activated in the system library in pictures > Preferences > General.  'Use as a Photo library system' should be greyed out.

After you import new photos, it is best to quit the Photos and the application that accesses photos. This will force Photos to update databases of library for the media, and Safari browser or other applications of closing force it to refresh caches read from the media browser.

In addition, you use iCloud photo library.  You have active "optimize Storage"? Photos download still pictures of iCloud, or full synchronization?

In addition, there is the graphic equalizer in there that totally works well to further fine tune your desired speaker and the audio preference.

  • Cannot eject the disc hard ultrabay in ' Safely Remove Hardware and and eject the media.

    Just installed my T430s with Win7 x 64.
But I have a problem to the ejection of my hard drive in ultrabay using the icon "Safely Remove Hardware and and eject the media.

I installed the latest Intel Rapid storage driver (RST) worm. 12.8.10.1005 download of Lenovo.

UltraBay drive hard not in the list using the driver Lenovo RST!

If I use the native Win7 driver (Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller), it works:

Works very well using native driver.

I guess that the Intel RST pilot could have some improvements to the native driver... so I would frefer using them.

This is what it looks like in Device Manager:
    Driver Intel RST:

    Win7 x 64 native driver:

Suggestions... someone at - it a newer driver of RST?
Tried to find one at Intel without luck :-(

I tried today with 4 different drivers and here is the result:
1: "Lenovo" RST driver version 12.8.10.1005: best performance of all. Does NOT support ultrabay ejct!
2: Intel RST driver ver. 12.9.0.1001: a little slower than 1. Support ultrabay eject!
3: Intel RST driver ver. 13.1.0.1058: a little bit faster than 2, but not as fast as 1. Support ultrabay eject!

4: Win7 x 64 native driver AHCI: a little slower than the others. Support ultrabay eject!

Test drive: Micron C400 256 GB

Also tried Intel 320 128 GB and using this disc the native driver was also fast drivers Intel RST (did not try the 'Lenovo' RST).

How to join Lenovo for the 'Lenovo' fixed driver?

  • Slow reaction of the media on Win XP buttons - Satellite A300-1MX

    Hello world

I bought a Satellite A300-1MX about 1 month ago. I had XP installed on it. I installed all the drivers, etc.

The multimedia keys, however, are a little slow in their reaction, meaning: I press one of them (e.g. READING), then it turns on and outside as normally (at full speed), but then he only PLAYS the song after maybe 3-4 seconds.

The problem is that I've lived twice more that these media buttons reacted very quickly (so normal speed), and only two times this happened was when, once I played a PC GAME, and once I was using another program.

So it was almost like they wud answer quickly only if traore to be little RAM used, or some processor used. Do not know well, that's my theory.

Maybe somebody has a solution for how to get the media buttons respond quickly (normally) and not only after 3-4 seconds.

PS: I use the windows media player for media buttons.

    Thank you very much!!
    Sasch

    Hello

It is not easy to say what the problem is here. In my view, it is also important that opinion may be different on the speed, how he should respond. I put t know what you mean with slow or fast, but if the player has already opened the music should start playing immediately.
When you press play and wait for the application to open can only takes a few seconds to start, and it is nothing unusual.

Another important point is preinstalled WXP. Have you noticed that normal speed with Vista preinstalled?

  • Photo search does not work in the Finder, but done in Spotlight.  In addition, can not see the Photos in other applications using the media browser

Below is a screenshot of Photos with photo with the name IMG_1758.JPG.  On top of the image is my Finder window you are looking for this image under "This Mac" with no results.  Below the resulting from the spotlight that does not show the result.  I have only one library of photos under that user.  Also, if I am in another application such as Notes, Pages, Numbers, etc., I can't search and find images in the Photos.

The Finder doesn't show images in boxes including the photo library.

To access images sin Photos from another application using the media browser, this article was written for iphoto but it pretty much the same for Photos. The first option is to look for.
