A question about Windows Server 2008/Hypervisor VMs

Is there a way to convert Windows virtual machines to VMware virtual machines?

Oh... Sorry to http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/faqs.html

  • Fax through Windows Server 2008 R2 Std issues.

Help!  I get "Fatal errors" faxing as well as "send faxes with the help of the selected printer, you must first create a fax account".  messages.  These two happen to Windows 7 Professional PC Fax via a Windows Server 2008 R2 Std fax server.  Unrecoverable errors are somewhat contradictory, but rather ordinary, but the "must first create the account" error whenever a workstation.

On the workstation "must first create the account", it actually sends the fax but the error is misleading for the user.  I removed the fax services in Control Panel, the Windows on the desktop features, rebooted, removed the server account, restarted the server, fax services added the services of fax to the workstation, rebooted, reconnected to the fax server and get always the same message.
On the workstation "Fatal error", I tried tweeking with the settings of the modem (flow control, modem speed, etc.), but still not that problem.

I hesitate on the removal of the fax from the server server role that I have more than a dozen represents the sending and receiving of faxes by him now.
Someone has any suggestions, and if I do not remove the Fax Server since the Windows Server 2008 role when I add I get the same settings as before?
    Thank you.

  • Windows server 2008 r2 domain controller deletes printers on windows 2003 Server

We have recently installed two new Windows Server 2008 R2 servers in our field.  one of the new servers is the new domain controller (successor of Windows Server 2003 SBS, which has been decommissioned).  There are two other Windows 2003 servers in the domain.  When we turn off all servers for maintenance and then power them back on, the print on the windows 2003 Server spooler crashes; printers are deleted and the server does not allow you to add printers.  is this be caused by some settings in windows server 2008 r2?  This happened twice, and the solution is to rub the print on the windows 2003 Server spooler and reinstall the printers from scratch.

  • License with Windows Server 2008 Guest OS.

    Hello

I installed on a host (System Dell R810) vSphere with 24 physical cores with hyper-threading. If I install a Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition/64-bit, on the physical hardware, I see 48 processors.

I would like to convert this system into a system in a virtualized with vSphere environment. Assuming that I buy enough licenses VMWare, which is the maximum number of VMWare virtual cores I can refer to various OS comments? Also, if I have the Windows Standard edition, which is the maximum. number of virtualized hearts would be the guest operating system, see?

Also, is there a document describing how licensing works and how things refers to a VMWare deployment.

    Thank you.

    http://www.VMware.com/download/EULA/multicore.html

VMware licenses is based on the number of Sockets in the box... carrots.

Here is a short breakdown in licensing requirements.

    ESXi free-4 core support only.

Software licenses with hearts of six (6) by restriction of processor: vSphere Essentials, vSphere Essentials Plus, vSphere Standard and vSphere Enterprise

Twelve software licenses (12) cores per CPU restriction: vSphere Advanced and vSphere Enterprise Plus

Microsoft licenses - depends on the day: o)

    It's your best reference. - http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/E/C/EECF5D44-9A88-43D8-AFDB-D2AB82BE035C/Win%20Server%20Lic%20Book%20customer%20hi-res.pdf

Windows Standard - for each license, you get a single virtual machine.

Windows Enterprise - for each license, you can run 4xVM

Windows Datacenter - you register each Jack in the box (like VMware) - run as VM of this family of products that you can (IE, Windows 2008, Datacenter Edition allows all x Windows 2008 flavours).  I'm not positive is a Windows 2008 R2 allows to downgrade to Windows 2008 flavors as well.  So I guess.

My recommendation - pony up the money and get data center and then laugh if Microsoft comes audit because you don't care.

SQL 2008 licensing - read carefully - it changes and is confusing.  Best to call the Microsoft license program to be positive.

    Hardware capabilities

    http://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/sample/domis/update/2008/02feb/0208ws2plp_ch.htm

Limitations of VMware – you can create within a VM CPU 8. However if you need that many cores... rethink its acceptability of virtualization.  See #5, and then read it again.

Now, just throw in the standard practices and answering the questions I know you will come back and ask.

#1-non, it has no USB support in a virtual machine.  You can't attach an external drive to your VM.  Look at the IP/USB devices for the solutions for this.

#2-Si you create a larger hardware RAID array then 2 TB it won't work.  Each virtual disk/LUN/table/Container (to use the terminology whaever) needs to be more boy then 2 TB-512bytes (use 1.99 TB to be sure). RDM, also, cannot be greater then 2 TB.  In addition, I recommend to use initiator ISCI inside the virtual machine.

#3-la recommendation is to try to stay in the range of 10-20 VMS per VMFS volume (much busy VM can cause scsi reservation issues).  He got much better then you can push the limits (wait for RParkers response when he sees it: o))

#4-you can create multiple VMFS volumes and join them together to make a larger VMFS volume.  Strongly discouraged

practical #5-bonnes of virtualization - forget what you know about the allocation of resources.  Start a Windows 2008 VM with 1 GB/Max 2 GB of RAM and a single processor.  ONLY increase CPU/RAM after you have determined you must.  Least CPU multiple VM's best for planning

average #6-sursouscription is usually 4-5 WHAT VM by heart, but of course it depends on the load and SMP VM

#7-do not ask solution best backup (of the beginning of war) - your typical responses are going to be Veeam, Vizioncore, esXpress as 3 all with scripts and a few others mentioned (like VDR).  Try them all (this way you can get backups and not pay for at least 90 days: o))

#8-don't freak out cause of your VM Windows 2008 allows you to use all of the memory of your host immediately.  Until you use all of the memory, the virtual machine will be uuse large pages (which is good for performance).  Once that oversubscribe you too far, they will all move to 4 k pages, and your memory usage will drop dramatically.  After that, when the memory is the most... you are done... not go further: o)

There are literally hundreds, but if getting vmware these tips here sticky would be we would have probably two times fewer threads and a much higher quality content.  Of course, #3, #6 and #7 will probably provoke a debate already.  I apologize in advance.

  • Viewing JPG and GIF files crashes the server (Windows Server 2008)

I work in an office with windows server 2008 and we are having a problem where the right click images and choosing preview or open with IE will crash our server, then everyone must wait 3 minutes to go.  I tried like 2 hours and cannot find any info on this problem online.  Everyone knows about this problem with Server 2008?  It seems to be very consistent and arrived on different images (JPG, GIF) until we had to install a third Viewer left - but the problem is still there and now and then someone accidentally blocking us.

I have tested what it about three times what about everyone when it crashes - but so far I'm 3 for 3, so I don't think it's randomly occurring even though I don't know if led EACH image.

My question is the same as I understand that there is something wrong with the driver, but I don't know what really happened. • Windows Server 2008 R2 with various OS Win interrupted network connections

Not a question, but a finding:

Shortly after the upgrade to Kaspersky Endpoint Protection 8, I started to have problems with seemingly random work stations in my area, the loss of their connection to one or the other of my boxes of Windows Server 2008 R2.  Some of the workstations XP SP3, some Win 7 - two BONES have been affected.  The breakdown of connectivity went both ways - the server could not see the workstation and vice versa.  Sometimes if I waited about an hour, the workstation could re-establish his connection spontaneously, but usually I have to change the IP address of the workstation.  Doing so systematically restored the connection.  Release and renew for workstations using DHCP didn't work because they always had the same new IP - address should change to restore the connection.  After a process of exhaustive and exhausting trial and error to determine the cause of this problem (I initially make the connection between the upgrade of Endpoint Protection and this question), I finally determined that the network attack blocker component was causing this problem.  I disabled this component during my assignment and did not have connectivity losses in the three months that I got that off item.  I also had a case when after the reactivation of network attack blocker, I got a workstation loses its connection to one of the servers, and after disabling the network trainer attack once again, work stations that had lost its connection almost immediately restored the connection itself.  So, if you are having this problem and use Kaspersky Endpoint Protection 8, disable the network attack blocker component.

    Hello

Glad to know that you were able to solve the problem. Your efforts to solve this problem is appreciated.

  • Windows file sharing - a lot of bandwidth is consumed on ports 137, 138, 445 domain windows server 2008

    Hello

I have observed this for a few months now on my windows Server 2008 domain (all my clients are windows 7) and it drives me crazy.  My wireless nodes #1 bandwidth consumption is taken by 'Windows file shaing' on ports 137, 138, and 445.  I tried to pull the bandwidth on these ports on all of my users wireless using the wireless controller, then the claim of the user than even a small file as 100 MB ' would take hours to download.  If windows 7 OS is too talkative, I prefer to go back to windows XP?

What is the solution of my problem, I need to have my users to upload files and at the same time be fair with my bandwidth that does all my work of nodes and servers without really hard wire.  Help please.

  • Allocation maximum vCPU for Windows Server 2008 Enterprise running on vSphere 4 Enterprise (ESXi 4.1)

    Hello

I have a guest of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (x 64) running on ESXi 4.1 with a vSphere Enterprise license 4. I believe that the comments and hypervisor should be allowed for and support 8 virtual processors, but when I add more than 4 and try to turn on the virtual machine, I get "market of the VM [virtual computer name] Virtual machine has 8 virtual processors but the host only supports 4. The number of virtual processors can be limited by the selected guest OS for the virtual machine or the granting of licenses for the host".

The selected guest OS is 'Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)'. There is no option in the drop down menu to 2008, Enterprise Edition.

This configuration is actually supported? If so, what should I do to get it working?

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

    Hi Matt.

.. .on ESXi 4.1 with a vSphere Enterprise license 4...

For vSphere 4, you need an Enterprise Plus license if want to create 8 vCPU VMs.
In vSphere 5 will do a license...
