  I followed the advice given in a separate post in this forum at Ramer49 to perform a selective startup with msconfig to try to run the update with all Microsoft Services disabled.  This does not solve the problem.

  I spent reviewing the logfile under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9_Hotfix_KB970895_sqlrun_sql.msp.log.  The problem highlighted is that the Services of Services SQL2005 database program did not start.  Here is an excerpt from the log file...

  My new ACER Vista Office tried to install this update 10 x, today. It started while I was working this afternoon. Until that moment, I had a complete connectivity via a cable CAT5e LAN accessing a router and cable modem. Later, I lost the first internet and local network access. Before that, I had worked with Firefox, Windows Media, and financial software and everything was accessed successfully the ' net. Then, I tried to configure Microsoft Outlook 2007 to get my email. His inability to access my cable provider was the first idea I had that I didn't have connectivity.

  Each time, I had the exclamation point on the stop switch and Vista stops with the view that he was installing "Update 1 of 1. However, whenever I rebooted the update didn't install.  Also, I had to restart my modem and router every time to regain access to the internet for short periods of time; in less than 4 to 7 minutes, all access to the internet is lost again. The error code was Code BC2 the last couple of times, but before that I also got error Code 80200053 when an Office update also failed to install. (I was able to install the Office update successfully, after another restart and cycle the modem to regain power connectivity).

  Help! FYI, I had to find another computer even to post this question!

  The KB967912 refers to the essentials automatic updates. A workaround for this problem is uninstall all MSN "stuff", resettlement using the latest version, which includes this update.

  If I update my windows xp home edition pack will delete my programs or make some of them do not work or work properly.

  It's a good idea to allow the updates of Windows run the calendar.  The security of your system will be improved and features as well.  You must be up to Service Pack 3 on XP and current updates. Use the Windows Update option in the Tools menu in Internet Explorer to get the latest version. On system properties, open the Automatic Updates tab and set the preferences to automatic.

  There are 19 items in the update and after it closed, the system after completing the update, I was completely unable to start the computer. At one point, I had running CHKDSK and it set a lot of things, but still the system is dead. Startup Repair did not work, nor the system restore... so that Microsoft has managed in a swift move convert my computer from one room works well equipment to an expensive paper weight.

  If something done CHKDSK, it means that your HARD drive has bad sectors

  Maybe run CHKDSK again adapts to things more
  It's not for lack of Microsoft that your hard drive is damaged

  32-bit to 64-bit is NOT a upgrade path if you have always wanted to upgrade 32 bit vista

  It must be done with a clean install with a final certificate

  and you need a full license of windows 7 to install windows 7 on the 2nd hard drive

  You can dual boot vista 32-bit and 64-bit windows 7, if the manufacturer of your computer provides windows 7 drivers

Which one of the smarties can you help me understand how / if none of them have been used. I think I still 2 has left this 3 pack, but how do you know? I don't want to go through the process of trying to upgrade a Vista computer I inherited only if I do not have a license to the left.
