Access denied to administrator records

It is a new machine, Windows 7 Pro.  After installing TN3270 Plus SDI Software, which created folders in C:\Program Files (x 86), I copied my config from my old XP machine files in the program folder.  This succeeded.  One of the config files should be amended to refer to the directory on the new machine.  I open the file in Notepad, and when I tried to save it, I got the Save As dialogue... and then I learned that I was unable to save in this directory, under the original name or any other.  I had to record on C:\Users\\My Documents and then copy under a new name for the program directory, delete the original and rename the new version original name.  The last two steps required me to click OK to administrator privileges to perform the operation.

My user name is in the Administrators group.  To work around this problem, I had to take ownership of the folder on the SYSTEM, after which I could grant privileges to edit files.

That leaves me with two questions: one, when possessed by the SYSTEM, this directory showed a grey check, not surrounded by a box, for a full control for the Administrators group.  Why do I have this problem?  I'll have to do it for each program I install?

And three - while I have you here - I notice that the permissions are grayed out for some groups, while for others, they are not, and for those who are grayed out, sometimes the box is inside a box and sometimes not.  What does each mean?

Thank you
Mike

To avoid that certain types of infections of malware, Windows 7 does not allow users to store files in the program files and Program Files (x 86) folders.  For this reason, ownership of these files is not recommended.

Applications that are compatible with Windows 7 should store their data in the folder data of the user, and not in the program files.  Some programs allow you to specify this choice during installation.

To edit a file in the program folder, right click on Notepad and run it as an administrator.

If happen all of a sudden and you don't have any installation of a policy, it could be potential unwanted software or some malware that do as long as Exchange backgroud is not political general admin.

I suggest that you connect to the following Web site: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm
run a full scan and registry clean and malware (if applicable)
Then reboot yor PC. If you do not have Anti-Malware, I suggest installing one such as Microsoft Security Essentials .

  • Cannot delete the folder (access denied / authorization to administrator)

Recently, after a good 6 months to give a fair chance to Windows 8, I decided to reinstall Windows 7 on my laptop. Installation went very well, no problems (it's the original operating system on this machine). When I installed 7 I didn't format my drive, and so all my files/directories have been moved to the Windows.old folder. I had already backed up everything so I tried to delete the record and was invited to give permission to the administrator. I clicked through and received the error message: you need permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file.

I know that this problem is everywhere, but before dismiss you this as a pointless post, that's what I tried (unsuccessfully) solve this problem:
    > Delete manually CMD with elevated privileges (no results, "access denied" after each item has been deleted in vain)
    > Turn off UAC (no change)
    > Delete using Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin
    > Add a DWORD value in the registry (UseSystemForSystemFolders)
    > Start in safe mode with CMD prompt, could not remove with CMD or via Explorer
    > Activate the hidden administrator account and remove using the Explorer/CMD
    > Change the folder permissions, raise my account permissions and creating a new user name or the group with my account with full access
I spent the best part of 24 hours trying to solve this problem. I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows because I had already transferred 200 GB of data on my computer before I realized it was a problem. Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. I totally forgot to include Unlocker on my list of failed attempts. It has disabled a lock that was in place, but has not changed and he could not remove the file. I tried to move the folder into a zip file too, so I could delete just that but while I am able to move the folder on my drive hard I can't move it to a zip archive.

    =========================================
Sorry, I thought that Unlocker is worth the try.

After all, you tried, I doubt that the following articles
would be useful but they both recommend the disk cleanup.

Since you have all your files backed upward... would not be a pure

    Hi Dave.at.ppsi,

    ·         This file is already on the other computer or this computer only?

I suggest that you check if there is that all previous versions are present, if all previous versions are present, then you can try to restore the previous version and check.

    1. right click on the file, click Properties.
    2. click on the previous Versions tab.
    3. check if all previous versions are available and select the same.
    4. click on restore.
    5. click on OK.

Now, check if you are able to delete the file or not.

You can also scan the computer for viruses and check, try to run the virus scan online from the link: http://safety.live.com

  • MSCONFIG - access denied, must be logged on as administrator

When I run MSCONFIG, I get a message "Access denied, must be logged on as administrator to make changes" when I get out of it.  If I make a change, the change takes effect, so this isn't really "deny" me anything.  However, I get the message if I make a change or not.  By doing a few google' ing/forum tedious reading, it seems that there is a cut with Windows XP and Norton Internet Security 2010/2011.  It apparently does not on Windows 7 or Vista, or with NIS 2009.  It prevents me from doing anything, it's just a major nuisance.  I would like to check if this is the issue I'm having.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

  • "Access denied" for the administrator

I have only my account (like my name and "Computer administrator") and the comments "the guest account is disabled. Even with that, I get "Access denied" when I try to delete the "System Volume Information" (has two verses in the archive according to my antivirus software). What is the next step to the top of "Computer administrator" who will make me even better access. I really want to be the boss of this thing, not the tail which is moved.

System Volume Information is a protected operating system file, and users cannot remove it.  It can contain files created by System Restore .  To remove content System Volume Information , turn off System Restore , then turn on again. That will delete all restore points, then create a new one.

Note that infections in System Volume Information cannot become active and cause damage to the system unless you intentionally run the system restore and restore the system to a date and hour earlier.
