Acer laptop comes with Vista and upgraded to Windows 7 now does not

My daughter has an Acer laptop and her boyfriend spoke to him in switching to Windows 7, but we are not sure if it was legitimate. He worked for a year or so, but now she cannot access the start menu, you cannot start in safe mode and may have a virus. She has no backup discs. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Well, if she worked for a year, then it is probably quite legitimate. Whatever this is not activated within 30 days is usually made in an unusable state, or limited. The most likely problem is a virus. She is able to run programs? Some useful malware removal tools are:

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool
Malwarebytes
SUPERAntiSpyware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Microsoft safety scanner

And it's not the Windows 7 installation disc that used her boyfriend? If you cannot use these tools or the computer is too slow and does not respond then you can use a Live CD. What you do is start you on a CD or a flash drive in a separate operating system in order to perform analyses of virus on the hard drive. You will need to use another computer with a blank CD burner and imgburn program. Write these two files .iso with imgburn.

BitDefender Rescue CD
Kaspersky Rescue Disk

Turn on the computer. Insert the CD of bitdefender inside her computer. Turn off and turn on and watch directly downstairs or upstairs for command to enter the Boot Manager (usually F12) or BIOS Setup (usually F2). Is there is a Boot Manager button and then you must press the key once in a relationship at the time wherever you turn on the computer. Select this option to boot from CD/DVD.

Is there is only one button for BIOS, then you will need to manually rearrange the order of boot devices so that the CD/DVD drive is at the top which makes the first boot device.

When the operating system loads up, make sure that you connected to the internet and update the latest virus definitions. You can then run the scan on the hard drive. After that all viruses are removed, then do you the same thing with the Kaspersky CD. It's just to make sure that all viruses are removed.

I hope that my explanation was not too difficult to follow.
