ACPI fan constantly runs at full speed on Toshiba Satellite L505

Hello world!
I recently bought a new laptop (Toshiba L505)... everything works fine except the fan under Linux. It works constantly to max speed and I must say it's quite annoying. I know it is better to have a fan that runs continuously rather than one that is not light up at all, but I really want it to solve...
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/321578 for more information on this bug...
I think that it is related to ACPI but I tried everything almos (acpi_osi change, acpi = force and other hack kernel). But whatever the OSs I throw (except Windows 7), it is always at full speed (I tried the Chakra (Archlinux), Ubuntu, and PC - BSD). With Ubuntu, I tried the last kernel 2.6.32rc7...

Thanks ;)

Hi sunrider.

to understand why your machine is constantly cooling at high speed, go deep into the linux stuff...

* but you can try "acpi = off" * instead of 'force' to give the os the ability to manage the material at the level of the api...
Maybe there is an updated driver/module implemented who knows your chipset...

If you "force" the kernel to manage equipment of this 'acpi' way and no module is there to do the work... you see it is a bad thing...

or you are a geek and program a module that manages your chipset to acpi... If yes pls share it with the community...
of course I'm kidding, writing of modules is not for me...

    Hello

I have a problem with a Dell Poweredge 2900 server witht. The server is still running the fans at full speed.

I tried to update the latest version of the bios and the firmware for environmentally sound management, but the problem is not resolved.

Dell OpenManage shows only a single error, said of the intrusion into the chassis, casing is open, but case is closed properly. I think that the sensor is bad, I try to look for the switch, but I can't.

As suggested by Theflash1932, the intrusion switch may be damaged and located on the Bay of housing Center fan. It cannot be replaced as one of its components. See the image below.

  • T7600 PSU Precision fans occasionally runs at full speed for no reason

Having a strange problem with my T7600 - no reason that I can see the power supply fans will ramp (for the period of approximately one minute) at full power and stay there, regardless of the load of the processor and the environmental conditions. My only options are to reboot the machine or wait (sometimes up to half an hour) for them to get by, and then they recede down to their silent whisper normal levels. The noise is unbearable and can easily be heard a few rooms away.

Is this something that can be fixed in firmware or make me a defective unit?

For some time now since the last incident with fans of PSU works 100%. It seems to have fixed itself, which hurts me a little uncomfortable because there was no action on my part that solved...

    Hello
Try to update the BIOS of the laptop. You should be able to download this on the Toshiba site of the country in which you bought the laptop. I hope this helps.

  • Case fan runs at full speed

I accidentally shorted the circuit case fan on my motherboard HP (explanation below), and now the fan runs at full speed all the time. Apart from the fact that it was a stupid thing to do, it will be a long term problem and should I try to reset the fan speed switch?

(Long version) It's hot here these days and my computer fans seemed underpowered. I put a splitter at the exit of the case on the motherboard fan and added a second fan in addition to the original fan. All it worked well except the new fan seems to run pretty slow. I wanted to get a voltage reading card fan, but I accidentally hit the two sensors on my voltmeter and the computer shuts down immediately. He has started up and worked well, except that the throttle was no longer working and the fans were running at full speed. This also explains why the second fan turned slowly before when they were both being strangled.

I guess that in the end I got my wish to have my fans running at full power, I just wanted to see if there are future problems leaving this way.

    Hello design_guy,

You should not have problems with the fan rotating at high speed, with the exception that you can reduce the life cycle of the fan.

You can install software on the computer that will allow you to adjust the speed of the fan to the computer which may help you extend the life of the fans and give you a bit of control over them.

Something like SpeedFan should do the trick.

    Hello!

My iMac 27 "has an intermittent problem with the CPU fan runs at full speed. Sometimes it happens at the time when I start it, sometimes only in my session, and sometimes only after a certain time. So does seem to be a problem of "heating".

Second issue is with the mode 'sleep'. It may occur also at any time, at the start of the iMac, session, or after a certain time. But once he starts to go in mode 'sleep', when I wake up, it goes right back in mode after a few seconds and that it will continue indefinitely until I restart the computer.

  • Satellite Pro A120 - fan runs at full speed

I've had my laptop for a few years, and for about a week now when I first turn on the fan runs at full speed. I restart the computer immediately and fun runs normally. I suspect overheating or dust problems since it works at full speed as soon as it is powered but not after a reboot. I left at full speed for a long time to see what is happening - I is not too annoying. I usually restart immediately.

These laptops have the sensors of dew or something? I guess the House is cooler just now.
    Advice anyone?

    Hello

I doubt the s sensor issue or something like that
Cooling modules are controlled by the BIOS. The fan table that contains all the details about the features of the cooling module is stored in the BIOS and I recommend the default BIOS settings first

So, start the laptop, press F2 and access the BIOS.
Press F9 to get the BIOS default settings, and then save the changes and exit the BIOS.
Of course, the cooling modules must be verified if the vents are not blocked
The dust is more a cause of such symptoms
Remove dust using a jet of compressed air can be useful in your situation

I had a R850 and complete random blocks of the laptop. When it crashes the fans start to run at full speed and windows is locked. I need to turn off the laptop and start over.

This can happen three times at a party, but it can also occur only those per week.

    Its complete random.

On this virtual path, it is not easy to tell exactly what is happening.
Each new laptop comes with preinstalled OS own and something like that should not happen. Later, when you start to install the updates or applications, it can happen that a background application blocking system.

In my opinion you should check the preinstalled stuff, processes running in the background to see who can be responsible for this, either you need to reinstall the recovery image and check how it works with the factory settings.

    Hello

First of all, I would like to know you detailed unit name. What is a Satellite Pro A60 or only by Satellite A60?
On the unity of the Toshiba power saver should be preinstalled.
This tool manages the cooling module and CPU.
I think you should check the settings in the energy saver utility.
Here you can change the settings for maximum performance for the cooling method.
You can also try to change the speed of the CPU processing.

    Hello

Have you tried to update firmware IMM2?

Latest version is v5.60, where I don't know if apply to your symptom but seems there is a fix for the problems of FAN since v5.40.

    IMM2 firmware v5.60, Build 1AOO72H

    Change the URL history
    https://delivery04.DHE.IBM.com/SAR/CMA/XSA/06ath/1/ibm_fw_imm2_1aoo72h-5.60_anyos_noarch.chg
    "Version 5.40, 1AOO70H.
-Fixed a problem on the x 3650 M4 which causes fan3 and fan4 to run at incorrect

Also, I recommend the latest UEFI v2.22 - Build VVE150C to go with it.

    Please check the dependencies:
"- The IMM firmware must be at BUILDID: 1AOE58T Version: 4.31.

  • Satellite P30-141 - fan constantly running

Laptop for a few years now and can't remember but don't fan run always.
    Its really irritating.

The fan is not at full speed but runs of course.
Power settings do not seem to help.

    Your thoughts.

Well, what to say. The fan should run continuously to cool the internal devices like CPU and GPU.

But a question; have you tried to change the settings in the Toshiba Power saver?
I mean in particular the method of cooling, CPU control method and CPU processing speed settings.

    Please check everything first.

If it doesn't help then I think that there is not much to do because the BIOS to control the rotation of the fan, and this cannot be changed.

By the way; did you check if the fans are free and that the air circulates properly?
    Check it!

Computer blocks once the fan CPU runs at max speed. It freezes at the configuration of the BIOS once the fan turns at speed computer crashes if the CPU fan run at maximum speed wherever you are!

    1. I did the cleanning & lubrication & even take the battery to reset the Bios but no success too.

(Before I can reset the Bios it will run normally.)

    2. remove all USB devices except the mouse & keyboard

    3. detach & attach Ram memory & graphic card

I saw a ROM_Recovery shunt on the motherboard label. Must I do? or can someone help, please?

I sent to the center of HP service after a week, the service staff telling me that he was unable to go bad because my motherboard is the American version, which I have no idea what it means (my PC was purchased locally) but to bring him back.

I solved my problem of tried to detach the Rams (2 actuators) & install only 1 on an another RAM slot first. This works. Then installed the second RAM on an another slot also without no problems so far.

I have an old HP Office also having the location of the faulty RAM & also had replaced graphics card but it raise a peep sound error which easier to identify.

I agree with you more HP, hardware problem is due to RAM or video card. Thanks anyway
