Acrobat requires a qualifying series upgrade, but it won't accept it

I have a new computer and want to install Acrobat XI on this subject.  It loaded on the computer, but when I try to start the program, he said I had a serial number but that I needed a series of upgrade, qualification, so I put in the serial for my 9 version, (that I got on the Adobe site), but it won't accept it. What should I do?
