  When you change the motherboard, you lose all rights to the OEM installed Vista OS.  It is called "tattoo" by HP and is a license agreement with Microsoft. Your only solution is to buy a version of the OS and sure, format the drive to lose all data. The only other alternative would have been to contact HP and ask questions on a refurbished motherboard, or a Board that is in the same group family who would accept the OEM license.

  I have an old Dell Precision M70 I work to clean up to make a donation.  The laptop came with Windows XP, and I've upgraded to Windows 7.  I ran a utility to clean the hard drive boot and Nuke and thrown in my Windows 7 Upgrade disk.  I was surprised to see that it is installed, however, the activation key for Windows 7 Upgrade is not be accepted as a valid key.  I understand that it is a key to upgrade, but is it possible to validate anyway?

  I could give it's feel bad to do.  I would like to put this machine in fully functional form, but did not know that my upgrade product key should be rejected when I started.  I have a second laptop I had intend to do the same thing with, but don't have the key of the original product.

  Any advice on how to solve this key activation debacle would be greatly appreciated.  I would hate for my two licenses to upgrade Windows 7 will now be useless because I don't have the original XP Activation keys.  Never did.

  There should be a Microsoft COA 25 character sticker attached to your system.

  Try the product on the certificate of Authenticity number.

  You will need to contact HP for the service if there is no COA sticker.

When I try to use Windows Activation, all options tells me that my product key is not valid for Windows Vista Home Edition. However, the steps to find a phone number to call for the activation require me to enter a product key, and then find the phone number from there. Because I can not clear the checkpoint, I can activate Windows or find a phone number to call. My computer has been purchased through my school, so I don't have a Windows Vista Business install disc, it automatically installs through the recovery disks. I could back up everything and then use the recovery disks, but I was wondering if there was another way to use the product key, I have, or to communicate with Windows.   I upgraded my card motherboard and CPU yesterday. After starting my PC I got the message->

  
  I looked for solutions and each of them said to try the Activate by phone. (I'm of the India)

I waited 2-3 minutes and the call has been disconnected. A dozen times more it's the same thing, I tried to make this process using another phone but it's the same thing.

  I see that you have installed Windows XP by using a copy of Dell's OEM and it will not activate.

  Copies OEM Dell didn't actually need activation, unless it has detected that the material is not a Dell hardware. Each copy of the OEM OS CD is tagged to a specific motherboard, which means that the CD of the OS provided by Dell will only activate with a signing Dell MoBo.

  If the manufacturer of your computer, Lenovo, has not provided an OS CD then, you must ask to send you this CD.

  To activate Windows, the product ID is not necessarily required.

  If you try to do a system restore, the system cannot ask the product key.

  However, if you need help for activation I recommend you to contact the Center Activation Microsoft.
