Add a host or upgrading processors?

We have a 3 host ESXi 4.1 cluster.  Dell PowerEdge R710s.  Each has two processors and 64 GB of RAM.  There are two E5530s and two others two CPU E5540.  What are all 4 core with HT.  We are at the point where we cannot add another guest without breaking HA.  I have things pretty well divided between the guests as much as CPU and RAM goes.  We use only about 25 GB of RAM on each host.  We have several suppliers requiring their VMs to be core 2, so that's probably why I'm in this boat, but I have just to be sure.  I took the class on Vsphere installation and implementation almost 2 years ago and I don't touch this kind of things every day, so bear with me.  When I look at the summary, here is what I have:

General:

Total CPU of resources: the 59GHz

Total processors: 24

Models and virtual computers: 26

Migration with vMotion total: 265

VMware HA:

Admission control: enabled

The current failover capacity: 1 host

Configured failover capacity: 1 host

The host control: enabled

Monitoring of the VM: disabled

Follow-up of applications: disabled

HA Advanced Runtime Info:

Slot size: 750 Mhz, 2 virtual processors, 4333 MB

The slots in the group total: 39

Used slots: 25

Places available: 1

Powered on virtual machines clustered in total: 25

Total of the hosts in cluster: 3

Total of the good hosts in cluster: 3

There are 10 guests with 2 vCPUs and 15 with 1 vCPU.  That is a total of (10 * 2) + 15 = 35 vCPUs.  Do I have reason to think that we are CPU limited here?  I'm fairly certain that this is the hang up.  Our material is about 2 years old and we have two options.  Option 1, add a cluster server and license vmWare, Windows, etc. again to a cost high ($25 k approximately) OR we can upgrade the processors on those hosts.  E55xx turning to E5645 Westmere processors.  These newer processors have 6 cores vs. 4 we have now.  So with 6 processors, would add 12 additional cores.  This seems logical IF you CPU limited.  The cost is MUCH lower than the addition of another host.

Oh great experts, what should we do?  If we go the route of replacing the CPU, I can just be able to stop the hosts, install the processors and make?  No additional configuration?

If you have about 13 slots available for each host, you are currently using 25 locations (which is good, this means that all 25 of your virtual machines fit into 1 slot), have 1 left over (effectivly unusable) and 13 "in reserve".

You are almost certainly limited by the number of hearts immediately, but almost by memory as well.

If you upgrade the processors, your number of slots for each host must back a little (count of memory, you have about 15 slots for memory), but it won't until a huge amount (perhaps by 3 x 2 = 6 sites).

I would recommend the additional host, to be honest.

  • Add a host to cluter running vm on vcenter

    Hello

We have three processors PROLIANT DL360 G6 Intel X 5560. One of them has a virtual machine that acts as a server vcenter.

I create a cluster for HA and added 2 & 3. When I drag and drop the host who, as the installed vcenter, I get an error

A host with virtual machines under tension or suspension can not enter a VMotion compatibility improved cluster that is configured for a lower CPU feature base of the host.

The CPU on all servers is the same, but I also noticed that the EVM under summary host mode for the host with vcenter. Now, I don't know why it is disabled. I did the bios settings processor that VT is enabled.

I tried the steps in KB 1013111but, which does not help because I can't drag the host with vm in this cluster.

Can someone please. Thank you very much

If I understand what you're trying to do... you have created an active cluster with VCA and try to add to the host that is currently running the vm vcenter.  With active EVC, you can't snap all guests who have vm running or suspended on it.  You can uncheck either CVS (which you should not need since all processors are the same, unless you want to add more hosts in the foreseeable future) or attempt to vmotion the VC on one of the other guests.  I don't know if it will allow you to do so, but worth it.

If it won't allow you to vmotion, you'll have to do a manual migration cold.  Turn off the VC, connect directly with the client to the host with the VC vsphere, remove the virtual machine inventory, then connect to one of the other hosts, browse the data store, right click the vc .vmx file and "add to the inventory.  Then you should be able to feed the VCenter and add your last host in the cluster.

  • Upgrading processors N100 0689-29U

I've seen several posts on upgrades of the processor for the N100 and I wondered if they work for all types of N100 laptops.

Mine is a type of N100 0689-29U that currently has an Intel Centrino Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz). I would like to move to something of 2 GHz or more if possible. I am running 2 GB of RAM, which was the max Lenovo said that will support the machine.

The reason for my upgrade is an attempt to accelerate a fire modeling program that I am running. Is it a upgrade processor speed up my computing power or would I waste my money?

    Thank you.

You have the format socket M, which are compatible with the following types of CPU.

    Intel Core Solo
    Intel Core Duo
    Intel Core 2 Duo (T5x00, T7x00)
    Intel Celeron M

However, there is a limited support for the version chip Socket M Core 2 Duo T7x00, a bios flash may be needed to do their jobs, but most of these Core 2 Duo chips are quite expensive.

CPU represents that part of the bottleneck of performance in a laptop, there is also the factor of GPU, ram, optimization of the software and hard disk file fragmentation.

If you're going to get a CPU, you should consider the T7x00 series, however, they run a tad warmer that CPU you have now.

But rather than make an upgrade with your laptop, I probably just save money and get a half decent job for modeling programs.

  • Cannot add cluster hosts

    I'm done with this...

It started when I had to change my non routable IP addresses management network to my private IP addresses.  I kept getting errors with the host, not the new IP address.  I solved this problem, but now when I try to add the hosts again in my group, I get an error:

"A general error has occurred: passwd: error immediate criticism-abandonment."  blah blah blah stack of error: "unable to set the account VIM on the host, could not set the password. It is possible that your password does not meet the criteria of complexity defined by the system. »

It is ESXi 5.5u3, I tried the following:

Remove the vpxa account, restarted host - same mistake

Restart the services vpxa - same mistake

Restart the vCenter - same mistake

    VI etc/pam.d/passwd: N0, N1, N2, N3, N4 - same mistake

    VI etc/pam.d/passwd: n0=-1,n1=-1,n2=-1,n3=-1,n4=-1--meme error

Checked the system authentication, do not know what its supposed to look like, but both hosts match

For the life of me, I can't understand it and Google has basically the same steps that I have just listed, I don't want to really blow the configuration and reinstall, but he is looking to get down to that... unless someone here knows where else the complexity of password or criteria for the system is set up...

Fixed the problem myself... Thank you!!

    Action taken:

Removed the vpxa account - I don't really think this has no effect on the issue

Retirement services - did nothing until I've known really

After coming home and watching my esxi, pam.d file hosts and comparing the differences, I just on a hunch deleted after /$ISA / pam_passwdqc.so, then re-entered the information as it was on my host at home.

    SSH in hosts:

    cd\ etc.

    PAM.d cd\

    passwd VI

My hosts had /$ISA/pam_passwdqc.so retry = 3 min = disabled, disabled, disabled, disabled, 7.7

    My hosts at work had /$ISA/pam_passwdqc.so retry = N N0, N1, N2, N3, N4

I edited the line to reflect the password of 14 characters required and the value of the retry N, so it looked like this

    /$ISA/pam_passwdqc.so retry = N min = disabled, disabled, disabled, disabled, disabled, 14

    : wq

    output

Restart the services, actually I rebooted the host, then add in vCenter without problem

  • Cannot add ESXi host to vCenter Server

    Hello

I created a home set up a VMware datacenter for study purposes. I currently have 2 virtual machines: an ESXi host with vCenter Server Appliance deployed on this subject.

I configured the server vCenter through web interface device and I have connected using vSphere Client.

I created a data center, but when I try to add a host, I get "ERROR: the request exceeded."
Connection with vSphere client directly to the ESXi host works.

I can connect using SSH to the ESXi host.

I have disabled the firewall on the ESXi host.

I have read many articles on the kbase but nothing helped me to solve this problem.

    You have any ideas?

    I finally got to understand.

It seems like my vmware workstation is not connected to the esxi as a physical host in my local network host, and so I was able to ping it unit of vCenter Server (but it worked the other way around, and that's why I thought it was ok).

After the connection to the physical LAN of VMware workstation settings, everything worked fine.

  • Cannot run add a host vCAC to vCO

I tried to run the workflow 'Add a host vCAC' and continues with invalid credentials.  I tried the account a local administrator on the system of IaaS, an AD that is in the Administrators group and the based AD account service IaaS components are installed as.  None of them have worked.

How can I dig deeper to understand what is malfunctioning and what I need for this power?

Someone at - he was able to do with AD to service account?

    Solution:

    Setup

    • ROOT domain credentials are named vCACp
    • Credentials of field CHILD named vCACt
    • IaaS server is in the field of CHILD
    • ROOT & CHILD have a two-way trust relationship.

    ROOT\vCACp & CHILD\vCACt to the administrator group on IaaS.Child.local

    Admission tests

Go to https://iaas.child.com/repository/data/MetaModel.svc/ and put in

ROOT\vCACp credential and it works very well.  It returns the XML code.

CHILD\vCACt credential and it works very well.  It returns the XML code.

If the permissions work on the side of IaaS.

Go to vCO and run the "Add to vCAC host" and put in vCACp ID with the Netbios name of the ROOT.  Breaks down...

Try again with vCACt using the netbios name of the CHILD... work properly.

Apparently, there is a limitation/known issue with the use of vCO and cross domain trust.   Not sure of the details and am still digging for a Ko or a few other details about this.

  • Unable to add previous hosts to vCenter device

Greetings.  We are migrating our guests to new hardware.  We had three hosts for running ESXi 5.5.0 - 1331820 with the vCenter device on one of them.  Everything worked well.  In the process of moving virtual machines around, vCenter device has been deleted (intentionally).  We recreated the device of the OVA 5.5.0.5201 vCenter and ran through the Installation Wizard as previously.

Now, when you add one of the existing hosts to vCenter, it finds the host and displays information.  When the user clicks on finish, it works quickly up to 80% and the host appears, and then disconnects.  The log shows: add host independent, added host, unable to connect host computer in the data center; connection error host, removed in the data center.

The error showing is: cannot communicate with the specified host (x.x.x.x). The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond.

Now the stupid thing is that we can not even add the host on which the vCenter unit is on.  In addition, all hosts and vCenter unit are on the same network of management.  There is no firewall doesn't block all ports.  I read through a lot of the display of the Knowledge Base, and most is in regards to incorrect IP addresses or ports blocked or similar.  I checked through everything and could not find anything wrong.

Last thing is that we amazed the ESXi host that had the vCenter device on it and re-installed 5.5.0 - 1623387 ESXi (version a little more recent than before) and reinstalled the that vCenter device exactly as before.  Now we can add that the host but still cannot add other hosts.  So it appears the issue is something with the hosts and not the device vCenter.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I run in to the same kind of problems with other factors.

FWIW, have you tried the following in this order? 1 stop the vpxa on host, 2 service. Stop the service vmware-vpxd on the vcenter server, 3. Start the vmware-vpxd on the vcenter server, 4 service. Start the serivce vpxa on the host. Then try to add.
