Adding a security key for an internet connection

We already had a wireless internet connection set up, which we use for a year... A neighbour came round to say that they are able to connect to our network unsecured connection, so obviously I need now to "fix". I do this by adding a security key? I followed the instructions of windows on this operation, but it says it cannot detect our router although it is plugged directly to the laptop.

Not a question for the forum of Security Essentials.  Visit the website of the manufacturer of your router and look at fixing it.  This key will be involved in you logging into the router and setting a WEP (or other).  Once this is done, you MUST use the same key for devices in your home.

  • Security key for HP Professional Laserjet P1102w

I have a HP Laserjet P1102w of professional and wanted to use it in wireless direct printing. The connection to the printer networkhas no problem and it can print nicely. But I can't find a way to define a security (e.g. the WEP key or password) key for the wireless connection. In this case, if there is no security key has been defined, then someone in the area could be easily connect to the printer and use it for printing.

    The question:

Is it possible to set a security key for the wireless connection?

    Thank you before.

    Hello

The WEP key or password is on your router, not your printer. Which key WEP other devices (computer (s)) use? Without the WEP key or security key password, anyone can use you your network.

    Kind regards.

  • don't remember my password for the internet connection

I don't remember my password for the internet connection, I have a wireless router and when I try to connect my iPad 2 to the wi - fi connection it asks a password which I don't remember.  is it the same of it discover or to withdraw?

You are the person who initially set the password for your wireless (WPA or WPA2?) or it's a long string of characters (WEP)? --> who is he?  WEP, WPA or WPA2?

You need to connect to your wireless router and reset  Of course - you will need the router password (no password wireless.)

Or - you can reset the router (according to the owner's manual) and set it up again.

  • I forgot the security key for my Wi Fi connection, no way of knowing?

I use windows vista. I put a password on my computer for the router. Now that I want to connect my ipad to the internet via WiFi, he asks me the password which I do not remember! What needs to be done? Thank you. Frank

    Hello Frank Ind,.

Check your routers user guide to see how you access the default router Manager web page. For example. I have a Netgear router. To access the web page of the default router I type: http://192.168.01 in Windows Explorer. Ask you a user name and password to access the Router Manager (the default name of the user and the password is usually displayed on the router unit itself or in the manual - unless you changed it yourself. For example, the default router to Netgear user name is admin and the password is the password.

Once in the Router Manager web page, click the wireless settings option (or something similar) and you should see your router login password.

By the way some ISPS (internet service providers) actually set the password for the default connection to the router on the merits of the case of the router. Once again, if you have created your own password then you will be able to use the default.

  • Security key for finding wireless router

I have a router D - Link DIR-615 in my apartment and it works fine. My problem is that I can not connect with anything other than my laptop because the security key that I have written down so that it does not work.

I wrote the key, when I set up the network, but when I tried to use it to connect my Wii or your laptop the prompt, I can't make it work. I don't know if I wrote it wrongly or am I misreading 2 as a z or an o as a 0, or it is the case or what.

I tried to go in the part 'Manage wireless networks' network and sharing Center and looking at security settings, but the key is hidden (appears as just a row of dots) and Windows will not let me check the "show characters". How to get around this problem and check the box so I can see my security key.

Connect to the configuration utility of the D-Link from a computer connected through an ethernet cable. Review the configuration settings of the wireless network and to see the level of encryption and password. Write it down. This is general information about the implementation of a wireless network in complete safety. The instructions are written for a Linksys router, but the method is the same for your D-Link. Refer to the manual of the D-Link if necessary.

Have a computer connected to the router with an ethernet cable. Examples given are for a Linksys router. See the manual of your router or the router mftr's Web site. for the parameters by default if you don't have a Linksys. Open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox and in the address bar type:

http://192.168.1.1 [Enter] (it is default IP address of the router, which varies from router to router then check your manual)

This will bring you to the login screen of the router. The default username is blank and the Linksys default password is "admin" without the quotes. Enter this information. You are now in the configuration of the router utility. Your configuration utility may be slightly different from mine. The first thing to do is to change the default password because * all * known default passwords for different routers.

Click the Administration link at the top of the page. Enter your new password. MAKE A NOTE SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WILL NOT LOSE. Re-enter the password to confirm it, and then click Save settings at the bottom of the page. The router will reboot and show you the box of connection again. Do not fill in the user name and put it in your new password to enter the configuration utility.

Now, click on the link wireless at the top of the page. Change the network name (SSID) wireless by default to something, you'll recognize. I suggest that my clients not use their surname as the SSID. For example, you might want to name your network wireless network "CastleAnthrax" or similar. ;-)

Click on save settings and when you get the prompt that your changes were successful, click the wireless security link which is just beside the Basic Wireless Settings link (where you changed your SSID). Most computers purchased during the last 4 years have the wireless hardware that will support WPA2-Personal (also known as WPA2-PSK). This is the desired encryption level. If your wireless hardware is older, use WPA. Don't use WEP, because who is easily broken within minutes. So go ahead and set the Security Mode WPA2-Personal. Do this and enter a password. For example, you could use the password ' here be dragons, beware you scurvy dogs! The password is what you enter on all computers that are allowed to connect to the wireless network. MAKE A NOTE SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WILL NOT LOSE.

At this point, your router is set up and if the computer that you use to configure the router will normally connect wireless, disconnect the ethernet cable and wireless of the computer should see your new network. Enter the password that you have created (exactly as you wrote it with all capital letters and punctuation) to join the network and start surfing.

  • How to find my WPA/WPA2 key for PS3 wireless connection?

My needs for PS3 the WPA/WPA2-keys is my network PC or router.  Everything I tried failed.  I fear that my own PC network is assigned a new WPA key to my router and I can't find that key.  Is there a universal key by default?   Is this something I can unknowingly put in place myself?  Wouldn't be easier to just start a new home network and assign new keys?  Help, please!

You will need to connect to your router and see if the security key is available for consultation.

If this is not the case, as you say, it would be easier to reset the router to factory settings and start over.

  • With the help of a PIX501 to secure and share an internet connection by cable

    Hi all

I bought a PIX501 to secure my home cable modem connection and share it around my house. The PIX will act as a DHCP client (my ISP uses dynamic IP addressing) and use nat and DHCP break with my small number of inside customers.

The default setting (set using the set up of PIX) seems ok - but I did a little "do-it-yourself" after some negative PIX customers I've read here in the United Kingdom.

    Specifically, I: -.

-A refused requests incoming icmp (to make the "invisible" PIX to the outside world)

-Created an access list to allow answers to my outgoing ping (something every geek network must be able to do)

-The value "string fragment 1 outside" to drop incoming fragmented packets

-Limit the number of connections to 200 and embroyonic at 50

-Activated floodguard (although I don't think this should be necessary on such a lightly loaded network)

-Compatible console logging so I have at least a bit of history of all attacks

-Reduced some of the delays of the connection of their default values

As I have a relatively new to this kind of thing anyone have specific advice or tips for a pix used this way?

    Thanks in advance,

    Andrew.

When you work with ICMP, remember that [icmp] command to assign ICMP messages for the pix as the host, while the [access-list] command is used to assign ICMP messages that pass through the Pix.

If you are using IPSec tunnels through the Pix, you can consider letting in string fragment of 2 sizes. IPSec creates broad enough to cause a lot of packets to be fragmented. Path MTU discovery would prevent, but many networks prevent incoming requests that allow the discovery to work. For this same reason, you can also consider allowing the Pix to get unreachable inside your host name if you the Pix end VPN tunnels. [icmp outside any unreachable towing]

Floodguard is enabled by default and does not need to be enabled. It should not be necessary on a little loaded network, but it would be necessary at the time of a DoS attack if you are Pix does authentication "uauth" of traffic entering or leaving the network.

If you are interested, the Pix can authenticate users inside before allowing the traffic leaving using RADIUS. This is useful in situations like a web server inside is attacked from outside. By the application of authentication for other traffic to leave for offending guests options are very limited. A timeout is used to trigger authentication again after some time. The [floodguard] is used to protect this feature "uauth' of the Pix.

The Pix has signatures VERY BASIC integrated IDS that you can activate by using the set of commands [assessment of intellectual property].

Enable SSH for authentication and encryption by generating an RSA key and saving it to Flash. [AC product key 1024 rsa] and [ca save all] disable telnet by removing all orders [telnet] and replace them with [ssh]. [http] should also be limited as much as possible for the administration.

  • Security to share an internet connection by power line

I changed my wireless router to wired home network via the electric lines of the House. How secure is it? The network administrator sees my internet traffic?

The reason why I ask this is that my Bank Web site would not show me my statement. When I called the Bank, they reported that there was no problem.

I can't find information on the safety of the power line networking on the internet.

Any guidance or help would be appreciated.

    Lyonhair

you use an Extender ethernet via the sockets in your home?

This threshold has to go through a router, it is "too safe" because it is the same network. Power line offers no extra or any security less security, just another method to connect to the same router.

  • Long wait for the Internet connection at startup with Vista

Basic box Vista my fiance started taking never catch an internet connection at startup. Since the arrival of her office up to the time that the red X little disappeared from the network in its tray icon took four and five minutes. I've tried everything to fix, but nothing has worked. I'm looking through its installed programs that is a bit like the Add/Remove program utility in windows XP THAT and I see what is called Hello. It is the software by Apple, which allows some other software network function. I think it installed when she got her new smart phone and install disks. In any case, I uninstalled Hello, restarted, and bingo!, completed internet connection for about ten seconds after the bureau came. So if you have a similar problem, check your list of programs and search for Hello. Uninstall it and see if it solves your problem of network in Windows Vista. If it doesn't, you can always reinstall Hello, if you really think that you need.

Thank you for this report and congratulations to solve the problem.

When I see Hello on a computer, it is usually the result of installation of iTunes.  iTunes uses to find the libraries shared over a network.   If you have a computer with iTunes, you need not Hello.  For more information, see Hello: frequently asked questions (FAQ).
