However, today, I'm at a new location and when I click on the desired link I don't get no prompt to enter the password or key.   The password prompt is displayed only after the computer is currently connected to the access point.

  Maybe your computer firewall blocks the ability to connect to the access point.

  Most laptops have a physical switch for the wireless card. Read the manual of the computer and make sure that the wireless adapter is on.

  Check the Device Manager for the wireless card valid entry.
