Additional virtual disk space not usable in Windows

I resized a virtual disk of virtual machines by changing properties and then used a live CD partitioning tool to resize the partition.  Inside windows disk manager, it shows that the additional disk space as if the size of the Windows partition has been increased with success.  However, when I look at the properties of the hard drive in Windows, the extra size does NOT appear and it is not usable or accessible to the file system.  Any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?

Thank you

I had exactly this before strange point of view and could not explain it. Seemed rather strange that the operating system will appear to display the disk space as allocted but the extra space was not available (even when checking the query WMI etc.)

Ultimately, however, EXTPart has remedied the problem for me. (and quickly)

If you do not use EXTPart, you can use the converter to recreate the disk.

Our MD3000i rpet table is not optimal and that a virtual disk is not on the preferred path.

We have two RAID sets on it with a VD each.  The former says her favorite way is controller 0, the second said his preferred path is controller 1.  But the controller 0 like take charge of both.

Using MD storage manager, I can change VD2 owned by controller 1.   But in the current for the next several hours, it passes backward, and the MD3000i starts orange flashing again.

If I restart the server that is attached to it, the question usually begins without having to wait a few hours.

I changed out Ethernet cables, and it did not help.  Either way, it all started when we changed the MD3000i attached to hosts.  It was attached to two Dell servers, now it is only attached to one.

After looking through everything, it seems that the iSCSI initiator is configured incorrectly. It seems that you only have one configuration of IP and the MD has two available. Here is a link that has a step by step on setting up the MD3000i and the MPIO.

  • Expanded the bad virtual disk but not Guest OS - Shrink?

Not quite another question generic "shrink the VMDK.

I accidentally spread the bad virtual disk in vCenter 725 GB to 1 TB. Fortunately, I realized that until I expanded the partition to use the new space in Windows. Is it possible to reclaim that space? In the virtual machine settings, I have the options of arrow to "reduce" the size down, but I'm not sure on the impact at the prompt to do. Certainly if the guest has not been extended to consume this space then it should be recoverable?

as you're talking about: the option arrow in the virtual machine settings

This does not leave you reduce (Shrink) the size of the virtual disk, which has already been strengthened. This option is useful in the case when we say you went into settings of the virtual machine, the disk size increased from 10 to 20 GB, but not yet committed that change and you want to return to 15 you can then use this arrow to do.

Please visit following KB, is the answer to your question, use VMware converter.

  • Virtual disk is not expanding

I have increased my virtual disk of 60 GB to 100 GB and I read that when doing so in my Windows 7 virtual disk would automatically increase. However, this was not the case. If I go to computer management and watch my drive under storage, I see that the drive is in larger size, but I can't develop so that it uses all the space. The alternative to "Develop" menu drop-down is disabled. Any input on what to do? I do not know if it is a problem related to merging or Windows...

Not all disks in Windows are extensible, it's for sure a Windows problem.

You might have better luck using a few tools like gparted.

  • Used virtual disk space

Myself in trouble and am not sure how best to cope. Got a Windows Server 2008 that is configured with a 95 GB HD (which is 95% of 100 GB virtual disk) and now I am unable to create snapshots due to lack of availaable to free space on the data store. I used the disk option "shrink" management Windows disk and reduced the size of the 'C' of 75GB drive and ran the option boom of VMware Tools, which is not the amount of free space on the data store, as seen in VCenter. Also see desperate to back up the data by removing the server and re-building/restoration with a smaller drive 'C' does anyone know of all the other options I could try? Thank you.

you have an another data store you want Storage vMotion the guest in quesiton to?

  • Need help to create a rule to monitor only Linux VMs on my virtual disk space production center

I am trying to create a rule that will follow my Linux VM disk space. I have three virtual centres Foglight and I'm having a hard time trying to understand how to implement the rule. I tried by name as, but I can't understand how to restrict to a certain VC. I have no common naming convention for machines virtual linux.

VMWVirtualMachineLogicalDisk where (name like ' mq %, WFD, fam, fdb % % %, % of the MAS ")

    or

    VMWVirtualMachineLogicalDisk where (name like ' / %'))

The first says the scope is valid but gives me nothing in the Rulette and no warning. The other gives me all virtual machines with their VM number but still not get all type of alerts.

For any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

  • Windows 7: C:\ of used disk space increase GB on windows updates.

I have a new Windows 7 system. I noticed that whenever I do a windows update and some time after I do an update, exhausted C: increase GB disk space. He went, as seen in the properties of C:,18.2 GB to 25.6 26.1 to 26.5 to 26.7 at 26.8 GB in 1 month. These sizes are shown in the properties of the c of theoutside of C:. I started to monitor the size of the disk and found that if I go in the C: drive and highlight all the files and folders visible and hidden and then ask properties it shows constant23 GB and shows that properties outside C: C: drive showed25.6 GB. The C: Windows folder shows constant 14.6 GB. So why the gap between the inside and the outside and why the increase in size?

I used the disc cleanup etc but the problem remains.

Select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, cleaning disk to emptying your trash, delete temporary Internet files and other selected options. I recommend also you click Other Options, System Restore and delete all but the last system restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

A better program of disk cleanup is cCleaner. Delete System Restore points may be important if you have little free disk space. The ability to delete them is one of the tools options. You can selectively remove those created in less important moments.

cCleaner also comes with a registry tool. Do not use this tool as any registry cleaner could lead to the creation of very difficult to resolve system errors.

  • Disk space used by the Windows folder

Hi guys I found that my windows folder takes a lot of my disk space. It takes 31 GB of my C: / drive... .and I saw on other computers just 15 and 16 GB of disk space. I also found that Winsxs is taking up to 18 GB 31 GB of the windows folder. Can you please tell me what can I do for this problem all...

Investigating disk space use to download, install and run Treesize (freeware) as an administrator.

    http://www.Jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Place a Treesize shortcut on your desktop, right-click on the icon and select run as administrator to open Treesize. You must run as administrator to see all the files. If you do not see the content of the System Volume Information folder you have not run Treesize as administrator.

    Information about Treesize

    http://www.Jam-software.com/treesize_free/

When you open Treesize scan select in the Menu and you will see a list of drives. Click on C and it will generate a list of files. Display the names and sizes of the larger 6 under windows folders.

  • what virtual disk software will work with windows 7 64 bit, I need to install one of my programs

I need to be able to use an a disc to install my software business and present cannot find a virtual floppy program that works with windows 7 someone can help

    Hello traveler6741,

It is technically not all programs that can create a virtual floppy drive.  There are 3 third-party tools that can create virtual drives themselves where you can use it to mount an image, but I've never seen one that is specific to a floppy drive.  Are you able to create an ISO of the disk in question to mount it in one of these other programs?

    Kind regards

  • The specified file is not a virtual disk: could not open the vmdk

I am running vmware player 5.0.1 for windows 7 x 64. I rebooted the host after the suspension of my VM, and when I try to play the virtual machine after the reboot, I get the error message in the topic. I have attached a screencap of the error, my vmware.log and the it refers to a vmdk file. I did some research on the knowledge base and he speaks using virtual disk (vmware-vdiskmanager) Manager to regenerate the vmdk file, but I don't seem to have this program. -What for vmware server/workstation? Can I download it somewhere? Is there an easy fix? My drive is stored in several files that I have to rebuild all of them?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help...

The "EVANS - WHS 2011-0.vmdk" file is a virtual hard disk of metadata, which is a pointer to a physical hard disk and you are not supposed to suspend, snapshot, a Virtual Machine that uses a raw disk such as this and the physical drive could trash making!

The only thing I can say without further information is to delete and add back.

  • Help wanted | How to increase virtual disk space

IM using ubuntu as my client machine and esxi 4.1 running on the server dell 2850. My image is initially sized like 15 GB, but I want to expand to 100 GB, which is the amount available in the actual physical drives attached to the server.

If I try to change the disk space by changing the settings it does not change the internal space used by ubuntu. ?

Can someone help me how can I change the settings for the virtual disk grows as the capacity of the physical drives increases?

    Thank you

If you originally created a thin provisioned disk then it will behave as you describe, but you still need to expand the space inside your file of Ubuntu system using gparted. Download the live CD of gparted.

  • External hard disks do not appear in Windows Explorer

I have Win 7 SP1 64 bit Home Premium. Recently, four external drives are not recognized in Windows Explorer, but show in disk device manager &. They all work well and are recognized in another PC. I have tried different methods to solve the problem without success. I unplugged all the USB ports and the power supply for the discs off the PC. After a reboot, one by one, I turned on the readers and attached to their USB cable. Plug & Play worked well and I could open the files in the first drive. The player showed in disk management, the Manager of devices and Windows.  As soon as I installed the second disc, one disappeared from the Windows folder but remained in Mgt of disc and Device Manager. It's the same thing when I installed the readers of 2nd, 3rd and 4th... After the shutdown of the PC and turn it back on, none of the drives show in Windows, but has shown in managing disks and Device Manager.

I also tried Mr. Fixit. I uninstalled all the USB controllers. I activated turn on AutoPlay. Nothing has solved the problem! If she can be of any consequence or relevant to this problem, the internal drive in my PC now has been cloned from a smaller drive about a month ago. Any help to solve this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Dave

    Vignesh Hello,

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry for the late reply.

I suggest you try the following steps and check if it helps.

Remove the external hard drive of the computer.

    b. Click Start, type regedit in the start search box, and click regedit in the list programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.

    (c) in the navigation pane, search for, and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    d. in the pane of details, right click 'LowerFilters' and then click 'remove '.

    e. click 'Yes' when prompted.

    f. close the registry editor and restart the computer.

Note: Serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

I spoke with people from Dell and Vmware support.

Support for VMWare counterpart said that it is a matter of Dell... that VMware is a path problem and do what it is supposed to do.

The Dell guy says there is nothing wrong with the MD3000i and the problem is with VMWare.

None of them seem interested in helping me out more.

I can vmkping for all the guests of all the peoples on the MD3000i without any problem.

If someone saw, I would be very grateful.

    Thank you

Hmmm...  Well, if they are flipping back has nothing to do with VMWare, it is certainly a matter of Dell.  Have you tried their repatriation to the correct drives and then just reboot the stupid thing?

  • Determine which VM virtual disk represents what volume of Windows

I couldn't understand it. Customer has a WIndows 2003-based virtual computer with 2 extra virtual drives of 500 GB. One is a d: volume one is a volume E:. They asked for the volume D: be expanded to 100 GB. After watching it for a few minutes, I couldn't understand how knowing who was who. I ended up guess assuming D: is the drive number. I it increased from 1 GB to check and I have just guessed so I've finished adding the 99 remaining GB.

Is that anyway to distinguish identically to the size of the virtual disks without the benefit of someone he documents a generation?

What happened to go to the Hardware tab of the properties of the disc in question?
