Advice on the ESXi server conversion

Hi all - I have a project, I work on the weekend and hoped comments before you start. I have a HP Xeon bicoeur recently purchased Windows Server 2003 running server is installed directly on the hardware (no virtualization yet). I want to convert the VMWare ESXi 4.0 running server and run the same operating system on this material. Here's the tricky part. I want to run ESXi on the same computer, Windows Server running on right now. I understand that VMWare converter exists for this, and it would be no problem I got a 2nd ESXi Server I could use as the destination for the new virtual machine running. But I have only 1 server. And the converter interface looks like it requires a host ESXi to connect to, when converting from one physical machine to a virtual machine. (please, correct me if I'm wrong)

My plan to achieve this is:

1. temporarily install ESXi on another computer

2. use VMWare workstation to converter to convert the physical operating system to a virtual machine running on the ESXi host temp

3. carefully test the new virtual machine!

4. download files of the virtual machine to the host temp to converter with vSphere client workstation

5. clean the hard disks on HP Server, install ESXi

6. download VM files on HP Server with vSphere client

7. I hope that new start VM brilliant without problem

8 go back home and get some sleep!

If anyone has any input on this point, known pitfalls to avoid, or how to go faster, please let me know!

To make it a little easier (you save setting up ESXi twice) just to use VMware workstation and VMware converter (even just an eval version will do). Then...

1. install VMware workstation and VMware converter on a decent existing computer (that has enough cpu/ram to support the windows server).

2. use the windows VMware converter for P2V server in VMware workstation.

3. test the virtual windows server 2003 works correctly

4 install ESXi on HP Server and configure it.

5 use the converter once more to shoot on the virtual machine in the front of the workstation in an ESXi virtual machine format hardware version 7.

  • workstion 8 - cannot install 64-bit on the esxi Server vm

I installed VMWARE WORKSTION 8.2 on my system after I installed Win7 64-bit.

Then, I installed the server ESXI WORKSTION Version 5 469 512 on VMWARE WORKSTATION

Now I'm running the server via VSPHERE CLIENT 5.

Whenever I try to install a virtual system on the ESXI 64-bit version, it gives an error that the system is not supported and I can only use it for information.

If I install the 64-bit version of virtual on my computer without problem systems, why I can not install on the ESXI SERVER ?

Change the settings for the virtual machine for the VM ESXi.  On the processors tab, check the box next to 'Virtualiser VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/IVR.'  If your hardware supports this feature, you will be able to run embedded 64-bit clients.  For more information, see nested running VMs.

  • Copy ESXi 4.0 VM off the ESXi server and start using it

    Hello

I want to know if it is possible to copy virtual machines stored in the ESXi 4.0 data store server that I can download just outside the server, let's say in a the position of work/external HDD and start using it immediately. Request, the reason why it is we have some scenarios that our demos are field office and so you are obliged to distribute virtual machines in a laptop or external hard drive. I have been using VMWare Converter 4.0 to convert the VM VMWare Server ESXi, but it takes time, is there another way to do much faster this process or any product VMWare Player or workstation that can run ESXi virtual machines without conversion.

    Looking forward to your feedback.

VMware Converter is the best choice and really one of the fastest.

  • Communicate the guests as well as the ESXi Server VCenter?

    Hello:

We deploy a solution virtual machine using Vcenter and ESXi 4.1 the VCenter logically is in a different subnet from the ESX servers.

Is it true that the VCenter server does not need to communicate with the IP addresses of the colleagues of the BONE... and that the vcenter needs access to the IP addresses of the ESXi servers? What (if any) features is lost if the Vcenter server talks to the ESXi ip addresses?

    Please advise and thank you,

    -Chris

vCenter communicates only to host servers ESXi and vSphere client only connection. vCenter is unable to communicate with the virtual machine, such as the virtual machines are linked to different virtual switch that would have properties different network (vlan and etc.).

  • How to reset the ESXi Server?

    Hello

We have two servers ESXi in vCenter, a ESXi server running a VM to openfiler that shares the data store local as iSCSI target that is mounted by the two server ESXi, for some reason any ESXi and vCenter no longer meets, and after connect you in ESXi via ssh, command df stuck, I suspect that they lost connection to openfiler web interface works always (said status current user 0).

I'll reset ESXi servers? I tried to restart command, also stuck.

    Thank you

    William

You could try to restart with the option - f.   Or services.sh restart to see if it shakes things upward.  Something in particular by logging in var/log/messages?

  • Move the VM of the ESXi server to another

Hey guys.  Fairly new to ESXi.  We have an ESXi server that has 3 SQL servers running, 2 Web servers and a domain controller.  Too much for one box.  So they bought more than 4 servers for me to set up ESXi on them and for me to migrate existing virtual machines to the new boxes.

My question is what is the best way to do this and there at - there a tutorial on how to do this?  I downloaded and installed Veeam FastSCP, but I don't know if this is the best way.  If anyone can lead me to a tutorial, that would be awsome!

I think would be best to use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone , if you do not have vCenter.

I do not use FastSCP, so I can't really comment on.

  • How to move the ESXi server in a data center

    Hello

I'm new to VMware so I hope someone can help me with this small request! Currently in our environment, we have two ESXi servers (both with several virtual machines) and we would like to add to vCenter.  vCenter is configured, acting as a license server & when attempting to add a host to the data center, we get the following message "there is not enough licenses installed to run the operation. Is it possible to add an ESXi server to vCenter?

  • The ESXi Server network configuration

    Hello

This is a pretty silly question for most of you, but I don't have any experience on ESXi.

If an EXSi server has 4 installed physical network cards, this means that it can only subnets different hosts 4? they are more than 4 subnets to be hosted, one or more servers need to be purchased ESXi?

    Thank you

    Hey Roywang,

You can have as many subnets you want as long as they are all set on your physics of switching.  For example:

    VLAN 100 - 24 10.1.1.X

    VLAN 200 - 10.1.2.X 24

    VLAN 300 - 10.1.3.X 24

    VLAN 400 - 10.1.4.X 24

    VLAN 500 - 10.1.5.X 24

    VLAN 600 - 10.1.6.X 24

    VLAN 700 - 10.1.7.X 24

Now, with these VIRTUAL networks, you can cut your vSwitch like this upward:

    vSwitch0

    PortGroup - management - VLAN100 - 10.1.1.5/24 active VMNIC0, VMNIC1 ensures

    VMotion PortGroup - - VLAN 200 - 10.1.2.5/24 VMNIC1 active, VMNIC0 ensures

    PortGroup - VM Network - VLAN 300 - VMNIC0, VMNIC1 Active 10.1.3.5/24, active

    PortGroup - VM network WebServer - VLAn 400 - VMNIC0, VMNIC1 Active 10.1.4.5/24, Active

    PortGroup - VM Network Backup - VLAN 500 - 10.1.5.5/24 VMNIC0, Active, Active VMNIC1

    vSwitch1

    Port - iSCSI1 - unused VMNIC2 VMNIC3 Active 10.1.6.5/24 Group

    Port - iSCSI2 - 10.1.7.5/24 VMNIC3 VMNIC2 Active unused group

What is happening is essentially in your vSwitch each port group gets a tag VLAN, then on your physical switches where the nics connect tag, what is needed, and the switch will forward the packets accordingly.  For example, the ports that vmnic0, vmnic1 plug on the physical switch you would tag for VLAN 100,200,300,400,500 like all these networks can land on each network card.  You will also need these trunks in trunk for this mode.

  • Could not introduce additional new 1 TB in the VMFS datastore to the ESXi Server?

    Hi all

Does anyone know what should I do to make my 1 TB of hard drive using my eSATA connector housing on the HP DL 360 G7 Server?

I installed the card eSATA PCI Express successfully on the server as is apparent from the screenshot of console vSphere below:

    SATA-Controller.PNG

but for some unknown reason, I do not see the hard drive 1 TB after multiple Rescan, still in white or nothing to present to ESXi.

Here's what can see the BIOS of HP Server:

    SATA-BIOS.PNGSATA-BIOS-Info.PNG

When I move the eSATA connection to my Toshiba laptop, it went well, I can transfer the data and format the drive in the enclosure eSATA.

    Hello

Unfortunately your controller (Host Controllers, SiI3124 SiI3114, SiI3132, SiI3531) is not supported.

  • utility for documenting the ESXi server configuration?

I know that we can use tools of command line following this kb KB VMware: backup and restore ESXi configuration using the vSphere command-line Interface and vSphere PowerCLI...

to save and restore a configuration of the host.

But what I'm looking for is a way to 'capture' the current configuration of a particular server, so that I can use this config as a starting point for the construction of host config documentation. The bundle of config which is created by running the command above creates a bunch of text and other files that I think hold configurations, but they do not provide a way to look through the config, or copy and paste easily the different elements.

Anyone know of a free util that will do something like what I'm looking for?

    Hi TedH256,

It's easy...  RVTools completely!  It is a simple, lightweight windows install you simply point your vCenter (or $vmhost), and then save the report in Excel.  It creates tabs for everything you can imagine including network vmkernel.  That should be all you need.  Still hungry?  Launch PowerCLI and use vCheck, Reports of CDPand NIC Firmware.
