Agentless monitoring in foglight 5.6.4

Hi all

We have an obligation to monitor a linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server x86_64 5.8 version) by method without an agent host.

We tried to monitor using another version of linux 2.6 host and created a Unix agent for ita and published credentials for it but we can not get the remote host listed in the console and data collection does not occur.

Does 2.6 version supports version 5.8?

Please help us with this problem.

Thanks & best regards,

Guenoun

the version 2.6 and 2.4 for linux, what we call, are the versions of kernel, not versions of the distribution.

I assumed that RHEL5.8 uses a 2.6 kernel, but you can always check the host by running a uname - a

  • Foglight for monitoring EMC DMX storage

The EMC DMX is not listed as a device in charge which can be monitored through Foglight. Has anyone successfully been able to use Foglight to monitor one of these devices and is there by any chance any type of documentation or guide that may give a glimpse of how it has been implemented?  Thanks in advance!

The DMX product range seems to be gradually eliminated by EMC. Foglight for storage management does not officially support any of them, but they are sufficiently similar to CLARiiON and berries VNX from our point of view, you have the chance to their follow-up as well. We cannot provide support for this however.

If you do not want to try, there is one thing that you should pay attention to: you must have version 4.6.2.3 or SMI-S Provider EMC 4.6.2.9 (inspired Enabler 7.6.2.26 Solution https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-19629) installed. Later versions do not appear to support collection DMX arrays to all SMI-S.

    I hope this helps.

  • SNMP monitoring

    Hello

I want to do a SNMP Monitoring via Foglight.

When I looked in the forum, found a carton of integration for SNMP monitoring interruptions.

But I want to make the attraction SNMP to get the values and process.

Any cartridge available for her. How can this be achieved.

    TX, Jenn.

I tend to solve this problem with an Agent of the Foglight Script. Below is an example of code for Linux.

Store the lines in a file (for example snmpOIDAgent.sh).

Look at the code and adjust where public SNMP string of community and host name or ip address. Then test it manually from a shell prompt until you are satisfied.

Load the script into Foglight via Administration > tools > Script Agent Builder. Then deploy and create a real agent to a Linux based FglAM (i.e. Foglight Agent Manager).

Start the agent, check its logfile (via the GUI Foglight). Then you will find its metrics/data via the creation of a custom dashboard and the tabdata"rectifier Panel under:

Administration server > all Agents (search for your agent!) > Nom_agent > Tables

Then use your drag and drop skills Foglight :-) See also some videos on edocs.quest.com > some version > use and Foglight management > creating custom dashboards.

    Have fun. Bart

  • Possible to integrate environmental Foglight existing with the purchase of a new vFoglight?

We have used Foglight and JavaEE cartridges for years and are now looking to expand our use of Foglight to include vFoglight and cartridges of the database as well. I was looking around for more information on how to integrate our existing with the new monitoring vFoglight Foglight Management Server, because it seems to be a distinct type FMS console.

I came across this old thread: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/virtualization/infrastructure/f/4826/t/19550426#10367

Is it really as simple as updating the license file to get the vFoglight features in our existing FMS?

Yes, you add the cartridges additional thanks to licensed and ready to start the deployment.

Depending on the size of your environment, may want to be careful about the scalability of your current hardware, etc..

  • In a tool such as Foglight events about APM-driven alerts

    Hi all

Our company is currently having an internal debate whether Foglight can replace IBM Netcool Omnibus.  I had a conference call with Gartner last week to discuss the surveillance as a whole and one gentlemen on the phone said that "Foglight can replace Omnibus' which has left me a bit confused because I know that we have had these discussions with Dell, who said that they are not a replacement for Netcool Omnibus. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and I couldn't get their probe on this statement.

We currently use the functionality of Netcool Omnibus in 5 ways that are:

    Event command line injection

There is a binary called postzmsg which is drawn from the command line with parameters that contain the severity, summary, on call group and so on.

    Syslog monitoring
Omnibus has a probe called syslog that we use for monitoring Oracle database log files and trigger events in Omnibus if specific events are found in the newspaper.  This is done in real time.

    SNMP traps
Omnibus currently listening to breaks SNMP of some of our products like CA Autosys and cypress trees of the ASG.

    E-mail

Omnibus was an electronic probe that monitors a specific e-mail (Google) for specifically formatted e-mail account and then turns them into an Omnibus event.  We use usually this method as a last resort because it is dependent on the e-mail.

    Automation of self-correction
Omnibus contains what is called "Actions".  We can search for specific events, and then take corrective action with Automation in Omnibus to fix what caused the event. An example of this would be with our product CA Autosys.  Omnibus search specifically for events 'pulse' every 5 minutes. These heartbeats are sent directly by a job in Autosys which in turn proves Autosys is running.  If Omnibus does not see the heart beat, she considers as inactive Autosys and run scripts which then try to restart Autosys save.  Omnibus then reports if this attempt succeeded or failed and worsens the severity according to its conclusions.

Please keep in mind that all of these methods are with an event-driven approach rather than a performance-based approach.

I really need to have a clear picture on whether and how the Foglight can cope with the event focused on issues.

I asked Dell technical support who said the follow-up:

You may be able to use a script agent to meet your needs. The script agent could return data to the FMS and you could have a rule that fires based on the data returned. You would be responsible to creating the script used by the agent. There is a "Builiding Script Agents" section under the "Customizing Your Environment with Tooling | Building Script Agents" in the Foglight Administration and Configuration guide.

Has anyone had experience with this? What was the result? Do you use today? Advantages vs disadvantages?

If anyone has the source code example that it would be really appreciated! I am also very interested in hearing other thoughts which have Foglight and another tool such as Omnibus or other tools and how they use with Foglight or if they withdrew these tools after having long Foglight.

Thanks to you all! Looking forward to your answers!

    Larry Roberts

    Larry,

Foglight can be configured to monitor the applications where an out of the box cartridge (module) was not developed and delivered with the product. There are several ways to customize Foglight.

    Event command line injection

Looks like you want to send alarms foglight via a command line program. It is feasible because there are available with Foglight APIs to create alarms.

    Syslog monitoring

Foglight monitoring logs with the logfilter agent. You can set the strings that need to be searched (when a log file is updated by your applications), then specify the corresponding string (based on regular expressions) is a warning, critcal or a fatal alert.

For monitoring of log files from the database, which is available with the cartridges of the database (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, Sybase) delivered with Foglight.

    SNMP traps

Foglight can receive (out of the box) SNMP traps and convert them to Foglight alarms.

    E-mail

I study further on this request. Basically, it takes an e-mail player that puts the emails in a log file that will read the Foglight LogFilter agent and search for error conditions.

Automation of self-correction Foglight rules have actions that can be performed in the cases where the rule detects specific conditions as the processor high as a basic example and then run the scripts commands, scripts remotely, send SNMP traps, invoke a JavaEE trace, etc. A custom agent could be developed to run your heartbeat AutoSys and then search for an answer to a file or stdout and update a Foglight table that is being tested in a rule.

  • Disable alerts for specific volume?

One of my servers monitored with Foglight SQL has a volume that is only used for TempDB. The size configured for TempDB use about 97% of the storage on the volume. Thus the agent host continuously generates an alert.

My question is what is the best approach to prevent any warning of this host for that particular volume while impeding is not the agent of database to continue to monitor the TempDB?

    Hi NewUser

Please take a look at en.community.dell.com/.../19558825 and en.community.dell.com/.../19558825 that detail how you can use the registry to change alerts for specific volumes.

  • How do I notify when the it group has no computers available

We would like to receive an email if a group of computers (specifically a cloud) in vWorkspace has little or not available (offline) machines.  We have vWorkspace monitoring/diagnosis (Foglight) installed and send emails, but have no idea what rule to set or build for this.

We have 8.6 (pas.1) and vMD 5.7.1 vWorkspace

M + D is very customizable, so it would probably be possible, but seems not have the option 'out of the box.

    Immediate choices are:

    1. a request for improvement for M + D (as I don't know others would benefit from this)

    or

    2. ask for the professional services team Foglight to spend time generating this alert (contact your account manager to set up)

  • Service FGLAM

    Hello

When you remove the monitoring server Foglight do we need to stop the service of fglam from the server or remove only foglight console sufficient?

    Thank you

    Vicky

A single fglam can follow several hosts so stop the agent and remove it from the console should be sufficient. Don't forget that you can clean the host from the data model.

There is additional information in this discussion

If you run former agents who monitor the machine, they are on and monitoring of the BONES was the only thing running follow this article support to successfully delete the object host and fglam.

    I hope this helps.

Like David, I'm not familiar with the solution AR systems using google I see this http://www.ar-sys.com/

but I'm not sure whether the correct application and it runs on.

If this forum is running on JDK 1.5.x or higher, you can try to make remote monitoring

or you can try to use the local discovery (if fglam is running on that computer).

With more information, we can be a little more specific on the right track.

    I hope this helps.

  • Blackened agents list

I have a situation in which agents on a host (brprwast001) show blackened. When I go to the page manage power cuts there is no blackoutas for this host. I am unable to start collecting data on this host because it shows that he is currently blacked out.

Now, there are some other info, I need to add here. Initially, we had (okwprdas01) host with agents of Websphere running on them. This host (okwprdas01) was cloned by our AIX engineer and created the host (brprwast001). They put in a request for oversight so that this host (brprwast001) monitored in Foglight. Agents currently show on the host (brprwast001) with the old name of the agent that includes the host (okwprdas01). We have migrated just applications that were still in progress (okwprdas01) to (brprwast001)-host. On maintenance, we have placed the agents of the host (okwprdas01) and host (brprwast001) are now in production, but showing blackened. Could it be because that the agents on the host (brprwast001) have the same exact names as the agents on the host (okwprdas01)? I've added screenshots to compare agents on both hosts.

This is where I want to be a little careful.

Technically you can run fglam - C and reconfigure the fglam, give it a new name and reset customer ID. There is the question of data that have been collected and ensure that there is continuity.

My best recommendation is to open this with supported (service request) so this is done in a guided manner and all factors are taken into account.

  • HASH value in a custom report

    Hello

I created a custom report for Top SQL on a monitored by Foglight Oracle DB. During the creation, for the input data, I check the HASH value. OK, it shows HASH values, but the format is not identical to the database.

In the database, I have for example 432647

    but in Foglight report I 45 M or 67G.

I am amazed. What is the problem with my report?

It looks like an inappropriate rendering engine has been configured for this area of the custom report. Did you leave the default rendering engine? If so, try some of the other converters and see if you get a better result.

    Hi Todd,

Your question relates to Foglight NMS, so your best option is to post in the Discussion NMS Foglight group.

A search on the forum of NMS Foglight reveals a few posts with similar symptoms:

  • Get Foglight to monitor my device

    Hello

I am a graduate student working on my master's degree in business management and technology with no technical information. (This major does not require to have a university education back in IT or computer). I'm working on my master's project which involves research, updated implementation, integration, testing and evaluating technology chosen in a virtual laboratory provided through my University. I am a new user to Foglight NMS and I'm having problems. Whenever I connect to Foglight, the 'add devices Wizard"appears each time I close on the Foglight NMS knowledge base. I think that my problem lies in the configuration of SNMP or WMI. After reading the instructions several times and try to configure the SNMP and WMI, I don't get my expected results - the ability to monitor the activity on the network. I tried to pull up a report for a summary of Network Performance, but it displays no data. However the "health of the unit" shows use 'active' for the processor and the memory. I am attaching screenshots illustrating my setup. Please notify.

    Hi Sonia,.

In the report window, there is a button 'Select device' at the top. If you choose the option "all devices", doesn't change what is the report?

  • Foglight Custom monitors for all Interfaces

I am trying to create a custom desktop for the OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.8 - ifOperStatus for all interfaces. I created the custom monitor successfully, but when I go to apply, Foglight makes me choose only a single subset (aka Interface)? I must add this manually for everysingle interface? I also want to add this monitor for a group of Force10 switches, so more than 500 interfaces...

    Hi Jim,.

That's right: you need to add the client once policy monitor for each interface you want to monitor. We do not support a table of results of a custom monitor.

I had my PM team to see if we can add this as an enhancement request.

To monitor the availability of specific process, we generally use the appmonitor agent
