Are EcoVision Tech - representatives of Microsoft?

I received a call from a lady by the name of Portia. This lady had a strong Indian accent but spoke excellent English. She informed me that she works for a company called EcoVision Tech and they have an authorized representative and under license of Windows, (she doesn't mention of Microsoft). The number of the caller on my phone was 0161 381 0000. I asked a number where I could call 'Portia' and she gave 0115 714 2007 contact information. She informed that he have had hundreds, maybe thousands of malicious files, ("not viruses - which are sorted by my security software") and offered to show me the location of these files. She asked me to press the Windows key and the letter 'r' and communicates "evidence" of all these nasty files. I then challenged him and informed her that I would not further without checking first with Microsoft. Society / that they are representing Microsoft? If not, is there anything we can do to warn the most naïve of your users - she was VERY convincing!

Hello JenC_688,

It is a scam. Just put the phone down. You have to ignore the information she provided.

You just have to ask you: How does she know that you have all these malicious files on your PC? She's just trying to make you scared to let him have access to your PC.

    I was contacted by a representative from Tech-On-Line by saying he was a Microsoft Technician and called for solving some of the problems I've had with Microsoft Vista on my computer. Microsoft will not contact you unless you have requested it.

  • I received a call from someone claiming to be a representative of Microsoft

    I just got a call from someone claiming to be a representative of Microsoft to report that my network downloads could be accompanied by unwanted files without my knowledge.  I know it's a scam, but I played along anyway.  The representative asked me to press the keys Ctrl + key Microsoft Logo at the same time.  Of course I hung up immediately, but I can't find in any of my research, what will make this combination of keys.  Can anyone advise, please.  Thank you.

    Original title: what is CTRL + touch Logo Microsoft do?

    It is a scam. This combination of keys does nothing. Then, my guess is that they will tell you that he was supposed to do something and work on you from here to get info on your machine. Microsoft never does unsolicited phone calls.

  • Who are my tech gurus? Are what they BONE fide Microsoft personal assistance?

    Is these guys real teams of Microsoft support?

    It is unfortunate that when we search using Windows the first thing that appears is the link techguru that looks as if it was the Windows help desk.
    We are already stressed when ask us for help and do not see this is the link from evil Web site.

    The thing about the search using Google or Bing (or one of the other search providers), is that they usually organize results with advertising those at the top (and usually clearly identified if you look closely) and then they are followed by results. Not knowing which search engine was used, the terms entered, or what results resembled, I couldn't agree more that it is a pity that the 'noise' makes front and Center for the site you are looking for is not at the top of the list.

    Hello pep1954,

    Unless you have a prepaid with Microsoft support contract then no Microsoft will contact you about problems with your PC.

    These are just scams to get the user to allow the rogue to infiltrate the computer and steal personal data such as passwords and bank account details. Never, ever give them access to your PC and never give them some personally identifiable information. The next time they phone tell them you don't have a computer, they will soon put the phone down on you.

  • All the sounds that are specifically related to the Microsoft system works not-missing the system tray volume control and Accessories Entertainment empty folder.

    I have no volume control icon in the system tray and my Accessories Entertainment folder is empty.  I can play the sound through iTunes and VLC media player but is no longer the Player Windows Media can play CDs or mp3 files.  I have more Microsoft system sounds and the sounds of a large number of online streaming sites no longer play unless I can their route via iTunes or VLC media player.  Windows Media Player says missing codecs if I try to play mp3 files.  I have upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 to see if that would bring codecs, but without any result.

    My problems were not related to the missing CODECS.

    I knew the sound on my system was basically correct, given that I was able to listen to free VLC Player I downloaded to replace the Windows Media Player while he was not working.

    However, the solution to my problem of noise was really simple, but the answer was just very complicated track.

    I noticed that a lot of the chatter about similar problems on other forums was related to Adobe Flash Player.

    I had recently upgraded to the latest versions all Adobe products on my system.  I didn't make the connection that Adobe software could affect all the sounds of Microsoft.

    Finally, after doing a Google search on Adobe Flash Player issues, I found a partial solution:

    Here's an exact quote:

    Very well, the problem is really the wavemapper mapping in the registry of Windows such as reported by a member of the forum.

    All you have to do is to open the registry editor by going to start menu, run, type regedit, then Enter.
    After that, in Registry Editor, navigate yourself in the left pane until you reach

    My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

    And then in the pane, right-click and click New, select string value, enter "wavemapper" (without the quotes, of course), ENTER, enter "msacm32.drv".
    Come in.

    Well, of course, it didn't work the first time. I received this message:

    the Registry Editor cannot rename the new value #1. The specified value name already exists. Type another name and try again

    I was puzzled for a while, until I saw someone in the forum with a similar problem mentioned that they had found a fix for this problem by granting permissions subkey. This led me to Google search for registry permissions.

    After that here, that's what I had to do, and although it seems that a lot of steps, it's really very simple:

    Once I had reached the drivers32 registry entry I pointed out the entry in the right pane. Mine said (default) REG_SZ (value not set). I then clicked on change on the Bar Menu and clicked on permissions on the menu drop down.

    This opens the permissions for Drivers32. I highlighted at the entrance of the Administration and click the Advanced button.

    This opens the "Advanced Drivers32 security settings. I made sure that I was under the permissions tab in this window. I noticed that the box called "inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here"was checked. Yet once, I did ensure that the entrance of the Administration has been highlighted and then I clicked on the button change.

    This opens the "permission for Drivers32 entry. I chose "this key and subkeys" apply to: falling to the bottom of this window. Then, I checked the full control checkbox. I clicked on OK.

    I clicked on apply advanced Drivers32 window security settings.

    I clicked on apply permissions for Drivers32 window.

    Once that I had done it all a lot more entries appeared in the right pane for Drivers32 including my wavemapper entry. This is where all along; Quite simply, there is not all the permissions to do anything, including being in the registry pane.

    I left the registry and now all my sounds are back and the volume icon is once again in my system tray. Who would have thought?

    Hope this helps someone else.

  • Are the product keys for microsoft products valid HP computers?

    For example I want to recovery my computer just until windows vista disk. But when I entered the disk key which located behind notebook, it does not accept.

    If you have problems to reinstall Vista, read the info below;

    Vista recovery media obtain and/or use the Partition Recovery Vista on your computer to the factory settings .

    There is no Vista free download legal available.

    Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

    Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
    See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.
    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
    Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Also ask them if it is possible to do the recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

    They will tell you how to do this.

    Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, Acer, recovery disk/s etc).
    A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
    The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.
    There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.
    If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
  • Are the fonts in Adobe/Microsoft under copyrighted?
    I was wondering if anyone knows for certain if the fonts included in the Adobe programs and Microsoft are free?  I for example, design a logo for a company.  Can I use one of the fonts in Illustrator, for example. "Baskerville Old Face" without someone saying I nicked the police?  All of the pre-installed fonts are allowed to be used by anyone for anything?
    Thank you.
    What do you mean by free?
    If you mean by free that they are in the public domain and you can do whatever you want with them, no, they are not free!
    In the case of the fonts that come with Adobe applications, you can use these fonts on the computer on which you installed the software with which the fonts are grouped. You can embed fonts in the files PDF, EPS and PostScript generated by this software and distribute PostScript, EPS and PDF files to others for display and printing. For example, you can use Myriad Pro Bold (delivered with the Creative Suite programs) into a logo, export the logo in PDF format, and distribute this PDF version the logo for the world for them view, print, or even to use the logo as part of a creative work.
    However, you can not distribute or use fonts otherwise. For example, you can not simply give the font files to a friend.
    Similar restrictions apply to fonts distributed by Microsoft through Windows or with applications such as Microsoft Office.
