as additional storage mSATA SSD

Hi all

I have a touchsmart Envy 15-j003ed E4A07EA #ABH with a 4700mq I7, HP mainboard 1963.

The laptop came with a rather slow disk 5400 RPM. I changed this to a Kingston Hyper X 120 GB SSD sata 3. Which works very well. However, I would like to have some more space on board. Also only 4 GB of ram is installed I would spend it.  Related to it have 3 questions:

(1) can I put a 120 GB or more in the slot msata SSD and use it as an extra hard drive? Not as a cache or almost...

(2) or that it will be fast to do the startup disk msata ssd and use my current SSD storage?

3) associated with the RAM, the specs give 1600 mhz speed, but the site of Kingston gives 1866 mhz as on option for the replacement, I use 1866 mhz?

Thank you very much in advance for your answer!

Yes, you can install a card from the WSSD in the slot mSATA for additional storage, but if you think that you can pick up just a larger SSD standard for less money extra. mSSDs have not yet appreciated the fall of wholesale prices we are seeing on 2.5-inch SSD. The WSSD cannot be a boot disc if you also have a standard 2.5-inch drive in the machine, which would be faster is a bit questionable. If possible, a WSSD would be a bit faster, but both are fast, it isn't a big deal.

Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

See page 44 for instructions of the WSSD.

The memory just be sure you get 1.35 volts or DDR3L memory. The manual says that it runs at 1600 mhz, so if you install the variety of 1866 he will just downclock.

    Hi all

I intend to buy an SSD mSATA disc to my desire, because I want to improve the response time at the opening of some programs, improve the General performance of the operating system and to access files faster to big (read and write).

I searched several readers mSATA SSD in the Web and I chose a P830 Series128GB mSATA SSD Samsung miniPCI-E disk (SATA III 6 GB/s, read 500 MB/s, writing of 400 MB/s).

But I'm asking about what might be the best option to use the SSD mSATA so suitable as a primary drive (operating system installation and leaving 1 TB of HARD drive for storage and applications) or use it as a cache to improve overall performance.

I do not envy for IE play or video editing, but I work with VMWare Workstation, and most of the time I need to use about 2 or 3 VM at the same time (sometimes during the recovery of a virtual Suspension of machine it take a long time, the virtual disks sizes about 40 GB). Another use for my desire is to play movies/series HD / 3D 0 and mirrored them for my Smart TV (via Miracast)

I read something on Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) and I heard some benefits for use with SSDS as cache memory but I am still confused the best option.

Any suggestions you may have? It might be useful for me!

    Hello @cchoiz ,

    Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand that you have questions about the installation of your mSATA SSD.

The mSATA slot is designed to only be used as a disk cache. You may experience problems starting in the mSATA SSD as drive. For this reason, I recommend to use it in its configuration provided; as a cache drive.

The decision is entirely at you in the end. If you are able to configure the BIOS to use the mSATA as the main drive, this will help improve your system performance in addition to using it as a cache drive, especially if there is enough space to install your VMWare on the mSATA SSD after you have installed the operating system. Use it as a main drive will also increase the life expectancy of the SSD.

I can only offer you my personal and no suggestions 'official response HP' in this regard. As previously mentioned, it is entirely up to you.

Hopfully, this helps at least a little.

  • Can we use WWAN SLOT to add additional storage in T430S

    Hello people,

I just wanted to see if any body tried this before.

I ordered T430S with 128 GB SSD and writable DVD in the Bay.

    Appreciate any insight/suggestions

You can add an mSATA SSD of desired capability, and it will be displayed in Windows as another drive.

  • E420s and mSATA SSD

    Hi people,

I bought an e420s year last with a 320 GB 7200 RPM HARD drive and is now looking to experience (finally) SSD technology. I thought that I should replace my HDD with a SSD, but I'm hesitant to sacrifice storage space that offers from my HARD drive. In addition, I can't afford to buy a large SSD. So, I thought that a good compromise is to adapt to an SSD mSATA on which I can install my OS and frequently used apps, keep the HARD drive for storage.

My question: the e420s does support SATA III mSATA SSD? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere and support refuses to answer that I passed my warranty.

    Can anyone help?

    Thank you!

    Hi gojaysgo,

I have discussed your problem with teams and founded their explanation MSATA III will be able to support your machine. One of the gurus (joelle) uses the X 220 with the MSATA III and it works very well for him. Well, it should work for you too and as I understand it, the drives are backward compatible.

    I hope this helps.

    Concerning

  • starting in an Inspiron 13z 5323 msata ssd

I just want to confirm that the BIOS does not allow direct start-up msata ssd card since the legacy startup options only show the hard drive.

What happens if the hard drive is removed?

I'll just answer my own question in the interest of those who suffer from this poorly designed BIOS.

As you know, access to the hard drive of the Inspiron 13z 5323 amounts to dismantling to go of the laptop; In addition, he do anything good unless you plan to replace it with an SSD. The reason is the following:

The BIOS searches only SATA and not the mSATA boot devices.

It follows that mSATA start must pass by "SATA (specifically, the system partition of the hard disk)."

Here are the steps that work for me:

1 convert the mSATA disc table GPT partition by using the administration tools of Windows 8-> computer-> Storage-> management management records. Avoid any partition present/created. You can install classic shell first to relieve pain to navigate in a Windows world without a start button.

    2. [optional] I want to keep the hard drive as backup boot drive; Therefore, I proceed to clean and set up installing Windows 8 for the final deployment.

    3. disable the pagefile, hibernation and system restore. Defragmentation and shrink the partition from the OS (C :). I had mine up to about 20 G with 2103 office installed. Make sure that at least 1 G of free space.

4 clone the partition from the OS disk mSATA. Use the disk mSATA integer. This should result in a single partition. I used Partition Manager in Proteus HBCD in offline mode, but there is probably a lot of other alternatives. You will need to enable legacy boot in the BIOS to boot from a USB key. If you want to avoid dodgy torrent and make it bootable USB flash drive (I used rufus), you can try the free version of EaseUS Partition Master.

    5. start Windows 8 on the hard drive. If the mSATA disc does not appear as D:, open a prompt with administrator privileges. Type:

    DiskPart

    Select disk 1

    Select partition 1

    GPT attributes = 0 x 0000000000000000

    6. If you see not D:, reboot, otherwise continue. Download and install Visual BCD 0.93. DO NOT use EsayBCD 2.2 because he may / will spoil the BCD store and make the computer unbootable. In case you FA place like I did at the beginning, this is the fix:

Turn on the old boot in the BIOS

Boot WIndows 7/Windows 8 install from a USB flash hard drive/disk (these drives must be partitioned MBR)

    Repair-troubleshooting >--> advanced-> command prompt

    Type:

    DiskPart

Select flight 1 (my memory fades... you want the ESP 500 MB (corresponding to the system partition) volume)

    assign letter = b:

    output

    CD /d b:\efi\microsoft\boot

    Bootrec /fixboot

    del BCD

    BCDboot c:\windows /s b:/f all the

    7. perform Visual BCD. Select Windows 8 in the Chargers section. Change the two entries that has C: d:

    8 restart and rejoice.

  • mSATA SSD + 2.5 "HD on Tecra Z40 - B - 12 p

    Hello

soon I'll be getting a laptop Toshiba Tecra Z40 - B - 12 p, reference PT45GE-06S03F7J, it comes with a 250GB SSD mSATA. I want to know if it is possible to install a second hard disk 2.5 "additional or I have to choose between having a regular vs 2.5 mSATA SSD" HD.

    Thank you.

Well, some models are equipped with an mSATA SSD instead of a hard drive.
But there is only one place to connect the hard drive SSD SSD/HDD or mSATA.

In the case of mSATA SSD drive, there is a special mSATA HOLDER that lets connect you the mSATA SSD to a 2.5 SATA controller ".

    Here is the Manual:

    Manual

See pp. 4-13. It is a WWAN port and would not recognize a storage mSATA device.

See p. 4-18 for the installation of the hard disk. Should be a SATA SSD.

  • Satellite U940 - 11 d - 32 GB mSATA SSD use

    Hello world

I bought the week last Toshiba U940 - 11 d and I would replace the drive HARD 750 GB with 120 GB SSD. I have a question. I would like to install Windows 8 in SSD 120 GB drive and use another DDD which is mSATA for swap or my documents. Is this possible?

What can I do for my application? Can I use 32 GB mSATA as normal SSD SSD or I can use only to the cache?

    Best regards.

    > I have a question. I would like to install Windows 8 in SSD 120 GB drive and use another DDD which is mSATA for swap or my documents. Is this possible?

It would be possible if the system of Windows 8 would recognize the mSATA 32 GB as an additional drive. I m not 100% sure of this, but I guess only in case this is not possible, you could use this drive for caching mSATA SSD.

  • Y580: OS install on new mSATA SSD disk HARD + mSATA SSD config

    Hi guys,.

I was wondering if anyone has done this? I have the 1 TB HDD + 32 GB mSATA config, but I want to install a new mSATA SSD possibly of 128 or 256 for my operating system and applications. I heard there was a problem with the removal of partitions due to Lenovo Rapid Storage. Has anyone successfully circumvented this?

I guess that separate readers via these instructions http://78.9.150.202/pub/RapidDrive.pdf
then saving them, putting in the mSATA SSD again and do a clean install should work.

  • Adding an mSATA SSD to a Y580 ideapad

My original HD goes wrong so I decided to buy a new HD and an mSATA SSD. I have read several forums and watched videos more then I would have liked and I do not always find everything that can guide me through this. I want my mSATA be configured as on my original HD with a partition C: and D: and it be able to run the recovery of one button and everything that the original HD was able to do. So I want the replacement HD drive to be just for storage. My computer did not come with an mSATA initially. It has the Intel Rapid Storage Technology technology, but I can't find RapidTool.exe that some forums say is necessary.

So I ended up making just a restore factory disk and used on the mSATA and it did everything I wanted except make a D: drive but all the features work so far and I don't see anything wrong. Now for the disk drive do I just plug n play or what I need to do something more?

  • Fresh Y580 Windows on new mSATA SSD

    Hello

I have a question. My OS works on HARD drive, because I don't have a SSD, only the standard HARD disk. I recently bought the new mSATA SSD and now I want to install windows 7 on this new album. I have the OEM version of windows, so can I install new own edition windows Home premium and activate it with the current code? After that, I can download and install the drivers myself.

I have already created OneKey recovery DVD with the factory settings, just in case.

It will be nice just install new win and activate it with the existing code, but I've never done this before.

    Thnx for response.

    Hello
Yes, you can do it. The only problem, which some people have faced is dual-boot. Sometimes, the two storage devices agree when each of them contains an operating system that can lead to errors. It is not important that you would face this, but I've mentioned just to tell you, because you know that beforehand you can meet it.
Another thing, activation is that the key to COA (certificate of Aunthencity) on the back of your laptop does not work directly. You must contact microsoft to obtain a product key for time to use at this time.
Ask if any clarity is necessary.

  • Emotional victory for U310 Touch msata ssd 8.1

    Hi all;

Just improved the 24GO to a 120 GB msata msata and I have a problem on the cloning of the HDD to the ssd with Clonezilla. The plan is to move the BONES to the msata ssd and wipe the hard dirve original and use it for backup and storage. The BIOS is current set on AHCI Lagency OS active support but try UEFI first. I've done this before with win 7 systems; but it's my first foray in the 8.1 w/UEFI victory. The system does recognize and access the drive 120 GB msata M500 Crucial; It will not just mirror the win - 8 8 partitions. I reinstalled the HD and restarted the system; to ensure that I mean something to the top and everything seems to work; but on the slow hard disk.

Help with this will be greatly appreciated.

PS. I boot from the USB stick with Clonzillia on it and used the cloning of disk to disk option

I think the problem is trying to clon a big HD on a smaller ssd...

  • W540 mSATA SSD as data along SSD into the main slot drive

Can I just install an mSATA SSD along my main SSD in W530 to use the old as data storage? He will see it not as a single cache? Thank you

ExpressCache is something that must be put in place.

By default the mSATA SSD is just storage.

When you put it in, it is not formatted and does not appear in my computer, so you must go to disk management to format it in NTFS so it appears.
