Aspire E650

Can this unit be upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7?

Hi acer4User!

The honest answer is "maybe"! Download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor . This program will advise you on problems of compatibility, you can have. You may need to increase the RAM to a minimum of 2 GB for Windows 7. Check if your motherboard can accept an increase.

The biggest problem you will find on older machines, is there is maybe not all the drivers for it! You will need to search online to find the Windows drivers, as the support site Acer isn't everything!

If everything looks good, first make sure that you have backed up everything (and make sure that you have the disk/partition recovery incase you need to reinstall XP).

Insert the disc of Windows 7 & restart your PC (ensuring that from the optical drive). Follow the instructions on the screen. Once Windows is installed, type device manager in the search box of the start menu, then click on it. Once Device Manager opens, it will give the list all devices with no driver (usually indicated by an exclamation point). Right click and select 'Update Driver' to see if Windows can find the drivers. Also use Windows Update to find the drivers.

You can also do this before you start the search. Download & run Belarc Advisor or Speccy . They will scan your PC and advise on the material inside your machine. With this information in hand, you can search the Web sites of manufacturers to see if they made Windows 7 drivers for your devices! Obviously, if you can not find the drivers, the long-term answer will be 'no '!

It's a bit tedious, but it can be fun! (I REALLY need get a life!)

Good luck!
