Empty - and everything started working normally.  How I discovered that was pure coincidence as outside boot in safe mode and "messing around" with the help of a dialog box (Microsoft), type "cache" then presented with options, leading me to another dialog box. On that, I clicked on "Empty" and, hey presto, result!              In a Word, then, empty the cache solved my problem.                   (My apologies for what is very technical but I only know the basics and would never do anything that asked me to 'clear', if you are using a non-Microsoft program.)           Sorry to waste your time.
