Assignment of a USB port to a COM Port.

I am running Windows XP Professional I have software that uses COM ports in the settings.  You can use my USB devices.  My computer only has USB ports. How can I redirect say COM 5 to a USB port or a device?  Can I connect a USB device to a specific COM port?  I know that if I use a USB series adapter it gives me a virtual com port is it possible to assign USB to a virtual com port without the adapter?

As I pointed to a poster earlier in this thread, there is no way to make a USB port to simulate a COM port in the software.  Necessary pins simply do not exist.  You need a USB adaptor to series which is located practically in the world of computers and their accessories are sold.

  • How to assign a constant name 'letter' to the USB port?

My Compaq Presario with Windows 7 has two USB ports on the front and on the back.  I use both to the front to connect a drive hard ext to the back, usb flash drives and a camera. Everytime Iplug in the disk hard ext, the PC assigns a letter to port such as J.  The next time I plug the camera into the same port, the PC gives it a different letter and I need to go back up and reconfigre Norton where to back up.  How to assign a constant name 'letter' to the USB port?

I think that the previous answer may have been cut off, but they were right. You assign it a letter on the USB port, you assign a letter to the device. With your drive plugged, if you right-click on the computer icon and select manage you will arrive at the computer management screen. Click the disk management icon and you should see your drive listed. Right click on that and you should see a choice to change the drive letter and path. From there, click change and select a drive letter for your device.

  • Test product with USB Port

    Hello world

I'm working on a project that requires testing in the production environment.

These products have USB Port, and the only way that we can talk to the product is via the USB Port.

The USB port inside the unit under test uses a USB to Serial Converter of FTDI chip.

The problem is that every time when a new branch produced on the tester, windows detects it and takes its time to install the drivers, which leads to a long cycle time. Once the drivers are installed, configure the FTDI chip for the description of the product!

After you have configured the FTDI chip, we configure the microcontroller on the product speaks through the FTDI chip.

Is there another way this communication could be achieved, I mean using any other platform shipped, or if some how the process can be accelerated on windows?

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Kind regards

Try to add a Windows registry entry:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\UsbFlags]

    "IgnoreHWSerNum04036001" = hex: 01

0403 6001 and corresponding to the ID of the seller (hex) corresponds to the product ID (hex)

I used this hack successfully on test machines that go to USB FTDI serial front controller.

    Edit:

As a side note, if the device is plugged into a different port, Windows will "load drivers" and give it a new COM port.  Take care, he still has the same physical connections and verify the port assignment after replacing the USB hubs, etc. of power failures.

  • too many comm usb ports

    Hello

I ran into what may be soon, where we test units that have built in USB ports that appear as serial comm ports. The problem is that whenever we connect to an object that has not been run on this computer until Windows assigns it a new com port number to measure. My concern is that fast enough, as the production line is in full swing, we will hit the 'magic number' of 255, the highest number of com port and I have not any idea that Windows will do at this point. Before you begin to write the code to analyze the new com port number returned by VISA and adjust"registry entries accordingly, I want to know if it's necessary. I think there are a couple of possible scenarios, Windows complains and it won't deliver a com port #, that Windows starts from the beginning, or that Windows strikes only 255, then keeps the front it. I'd rather it be at least two, won't my program messing around in the registry and really have no time at the moment, nor access to the machine (s) to experiment to see.

An MFP HP Color LaserJet 6040f network sends the scanned documents by e-mail in MS Outlook to a work station #AKD of 722EA WB HP networking with Windows XP SP3.  Not always, but sometimes the USB mouse stops working when is electronic mail and must be connected to another USB port. I tried a few times in a row, and whenever I had to plug my mouse into a new USB port (not all previous).  Fortunately, we have more than 4 USB ports available.  What can cause this problem?  It seems as if a software USB port assignment are taken hostage by the software of the scanner and reinterpreted as a port for the transmission of electronic mail.  Restart returns things to normal, but I wonder what other than getting a mouse PS/2, or rely on return to normal for most of the time.

  • How to configure a printer LPT when adapted to use a USB Port - Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

I have a computer that does not have an LPT port, and the printer that I want to use (EPSON Stylus Color 850) is not a USB Port or Ethernet.  I bought a cable USB2LPT and attempted to get the printer to work.

My problem seems to be the choice of the port to use.  Here are the steps I followed:

    1. pick "Add a printer" of the control panel. Printers
2 choose 'Add a local printer' (even if using the USB Port, like when I plugged the USB cable into the computer, I received the message installing driver recognition but not familiar "bong".)
3 selected "use an existing port.
4 select "USB001 (virtual printer to USB Port) - it was my best estimate of the long list provided."
5 choose the EPSON Stylus Color 850 ECP2/PCS.

The pilot was then installed without error and tried to print a test page which is that hangs without error.

I deleted the printer then tried to assign the LPT1 port.  No help here either.

If someone can help me with the installation, so I can get my documents to print I would appreciate it a lot.

    Thank you

    Dave

You do not have an LPT port.  When you select the LPT port data are always written him even if your computer does not have the hardware installed to make it work.  It would work if you have installed a parallel PCI Port card.

USB001 would be the first choice, then USB002...

The next step as Fouzan points out is to contact the supplier of cable or Epson for support of printer you.  Start by Epson.

You can try other cables, parallel PCI card or another printer. Alan Morris Windows printing team; Here Microsoft Knowledge Base search: http://support.microsoft.com/search/Default.aspx?adv=1

  • USB ports does not work

I intend to reset my laptop to factory settings by having the PC clean up the hard drive and reinstall Windows 8.  Before I do, I'm copying the files on my flash drives. I have a moment (I'll call him 'A') is a 32GB (brand new, he got today) which is/has been formatted with diskpart (so I can use it to create a recovery partition).

About 78-80 percent of the formatting of diskpart, I put in my latest flash player (I'll call it 'B') to copy some various files that do not have to be copied, but thought I'd for a while once the laptop has reset.  Unfortunately, as soon as Flash Drive 'B' has been plugged in, my mouse work anymore (so I just unplugged thinking the battery died), and the laptop does not save Flash drive 'B '. I tried to put the other 2 ports USB that were not used, same thing, the laptop does not save it. I refused to get out of Flash Player 'A' because it is / was still formatted with diskpart. I checked the file Explorer, and the two flash player 'A' and 'B' were not under 'computer '.
Fortunately the files I really need to be backed up, are. So, I'm ok with that. Oh yes and I tried to put in flash players, and they were not recognized by the laptop.
    Couple questions:
    (1) Will Flash drive 'A' be affected in any way since it was "unplugged", while being formatted with diskpart?
    (2) my laptop isn't even a year yet, then how/why would my just closed USB ports?
    (3) is it possible that all 4 ports could just die at the same time random?
    (4) I really hope that's not it, but my motherboard could be beginning of failure?
My laptop is an ACER Aspire V3 771 G, 1 TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT730M, 8 GB of memory (4 dedicated for video) DDR3, Core i7 and running Windows 8 and I have had since about June of 2013. Main uses are for some school work dealing with CADD, game on PC via Steam, YouTube and Netflix occasional streaming movies via a 3rd party source that so far has given me problems such as viruses and bugs.
I'm going to try to uninstall the USB controller drivers and reboot the laptop, unplug the power and take the battery method, simply by restarting the laptop WITHOUT uninstall the USB controller drivers. I'll try these stars and come back to say if either one of the fixes worked.
    * Real quick as question 1. USB key "A" literally just a finish is put in shape and when I entered the command 'assign', that the flash drive has been recognized once again, until I quit diskpart, now it is not yet recognized and even goes with my other, and my mouse (which the battery is NOT dead).

Well, I would just put it out there, it was just a hiccup. I went to the stop of the laptop and he "fell on a problem" and instead start again, he drilled in reactivating the USB ports.  They all work very well. YAY! :)

The two cards you access both should work.  The eSata connection is probably not a good option for you.
