Backup of symbolic links

Hello

I'm looking for some advice... I have a file which includes a number of MK links and symbolic links to other folders on my system, when I backup my system what will save the file linked twice? Once: the folder holding the link twice: the actual file the link it path-ed too?

An idea

  • Symbolic link to ~/Library/iTunes

    I spend my time between a MacBook and Mac mini, to take into account what I moved my iTunes and other data on an external drive. For iTunes, I already moved ~/Music/iTunes (using the option key to select the new location) and ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup (using a symlink to point to the external location). Today, I noticed that iTunes downloaded a update of iOS who suffered from my iPad, probably because I've updated on the other Mac.

    Is there a downside to moving and creating a symbolic link to ~/Library/iTunes (where the iOS updates are stored)? Are there other iTunes directories that would be more beneficial to have on the external hard drive so that they would move between Macs?

  • Install issues with C:\Users as a symbolic link to D:\Users

    I discovered this problem earlier this year, but has been recently bitten by it again, so I thought I should report it.

    I have 2013 LabView student which was delivered with a Sparkfun Arduino edition. My computer has an SSD as C: and a magnetic HDD as D:. I am familiar with Linux (Debian) and like the idea of users being entirely on a separate OS drive install to do the backup not only data, but also my easiest settings. I have my entire users folder on D: and a symbolic link (mklink j) on C:. Nothing that I have installed or used seems to have a problem with this configuration, until I first tried to install LabView 2013. The installer actually converted the symbolic link to a directory which as you can imagine all sorts of things in Windows. I have to go in recovery to resetablish the symbolic link mode.

    I got there, but recently installed Packager NI 2014 so I got to spend the last LINX and came across the same bug. (Installation of the latest LINX has not triggered the bug, just installing MPON.) Finally, I reaiized what has been wroing after panic that someone sniffed my network traffic and hacked my Microsoft account because I had just used a public WiFi at a local library without sending my traffic via an encrypted VPN tunnel...

    I don't know how to get more details about this bug, and I'm really not want to try to reproduce due to the dispute must recover. I hope someone in the NC can it track down and crush.

    SymbolicLinks under Windows using for Installation of the program paths is strongly discouraged by Microsoft itself as it break various things, not only confusing installers. They that prohibit specifically for several places because of that. Symbolic links, theoretically possible since NTFS v3 only appeared in Windows Vista and are even in Windows 7, a feature and not hidden. Hidden enough that it is not used often and he still has many quirks.

    Windows Installer Component and component Wiindows Services still are struggling to work correctly with symbolic links, which makes it difficult for software developers to create standard installers who can actually work correctly when targeting paths that contain symbolic links.

    Your Linux background very probably plays tricks on you. While symbolic (and difficult) links are an inherent feature of almost every Unix file system driver since its inception at the beginning, it is still a feature rarely exercised under Windows, except for some internal virtualization of Windows files to the locations of user files.

    A lu interestying is this wiki article whiich details some of the possible problems with symbolic links even under the most recent versions of Windows. For example, it is interesting to note that redirect the program basically files will be an upgrade of Windows fail catastrophally.

    Hi all

    I found answers to my question on "Windows 7 Help Forums" http://www.sevenforums.com/> and a program to recreate and fix all the original Windows 7 hubs and symlink [attributes and security properties (full)], called 'Junction box' [site Web of Documentation: http://iwrconsultancy.co.uk/junctionbox>; and the download Web site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/junctionbox/?source=dlp>].

    I also found that there are more original than those listed above junctions.  My advice is to remove all the junctions, you could have recreated manually (or move them to your backup drive) before running "JunctionBox.exe" (using its configuration file "DefaultJunctions.ntj").  Then run it two or three times; because it is not recreate all the original joints the first time you run it.  It recreates the together the legacy of windows (see below), by default (C:\Users\Default), all users (C:\Users\All) and the current user (C:\Users\%UserName%), junctions on the first throw, but not the junctions of temp (C:\Users\Temp) and their targets. - you must re-create the junction target temp manually, yourself, if you want them to run.

    Here is MY updated 'Junction Box' 'DefaultJunctions_2.ntj' list of configuration files (list of all the original Windows 7 junctions):

    ; ===(Start of List) =.

    ; A list of the standard set of junctions in Vista and Windows 7, for the purpose of repair.
    ;
    ; The notation is as follows:
    ;  Section headers are userprofile-records unless otherwise noted by a full path.
    ;  Paths starting with a-specify a full path to the system root. (Usually C:\)
    ;  Starting paths by are relative to the container profile. (Usually C:\users)
    ;  Location paths and junction target are compared to [value] section header without qualifier.
    ; Default profile settings apply to all generic users when profiles are repaired.
    ; You can add sections for specific users, if it is not normally necessary.
    ; Wildcard characters or macros other that those listed above are not allowed.
    ; Junctions will be created using the target-full paths, regardless of the values relative or complete here.
    ; Note: Non-English speaking users will need to create their own file, sorry.

    [General]

    ; Displays warning if incompatible OS or system-language is found.
    OSVersions = WIN_VISTA, WIN_7, WIN_2008, WIN_2008R2, WIN_LONGHORN
    OSLanguages = 0409, 0809

    ; Force the creation of junctions in system or user files, or both.
    ; = 1 recreates (parts of)-structure of profile folders missing. Relatively safe to use.
    ; = 2 strength deletes any file, folder or the junction occupying the location target.
    ; -valuable when it comes to corrupt junctions, but use them carefully because may delete data.
    ; Default value is to leave alone the existing junctions and add only those missing, but set correct permissions on all.
    SystemForceCreation = 0
    UserForceCreation = 0

    ; The following sections refer to disk files and necessary for each, junctions as JunctionName = JunctionTarget.

  • How can I remove a symbolic link to a folder in Windows 7 64 bit?

    Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64 bit. Malware any created symbolic links in Windows Defender files. Specifically the en-US folder - it now points to C:\Windows\System32\config:

    14/07/2013-13:40

    .
    14/07/2013-13:40 ...
    12/04/2011 01:17 en - US.bad [c:\windows\system32\config]
    0 file (s) on 0 bytes
    3 dir 136,375,107,584 bytes free

    I Googled it and everybody says 'just use rmdir. THA does not work

    C:\Program Files\Windows Defender.bad > rmdir en - US.bad
    The directory is not empty.

    Is there another way to remove a link? I tried mklink to change the link in an empty folder - no joy:

    C:\Program Files\Windows Defender.bad > mklink /D EN - US.bad D:\TEMP\Empty
    Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

    Why MS did not provide a way to separate a folder? Seems pretty basic that there should be a way to cancel a link operation. Of course, I can't delete my config folder. I'm trying to avoid having to start over from scratch - help!

    I had the same problem and I solved it.

    Prompt orders open and administrator, and type

    CD "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender.bad"

    fsutil reparsepoint delete en - us

    fsutil reparsepoint delete backup

    fsutil reparsepoint delete drivers

    After that, to us, backup and driver records - return to their State of origin. You can delete the parent folder and start a clean install.

    Apparently, the malware transforms these symbolic links directory entries without changing their "file properties". This explains why rmdir does not remove them.

    fsutil restores the malicious acts and you can delete these directories.

    I'm not an expert on the file system, but this seems to be a bug in the management of NTFS symbolic links. Microsoft may take into account in this situation?

  • Can I use symbolic links to share the file abook.mab for two users

    If I delete all the user profile .mab files and replace it with a symbolic link pointing to the same file in the other profile will be what sync my address for two profiles books. I have win7.
    The object is to have two user accounts Windows sharing the same e-mail data. I already have them show up on the same basis of messages.
    I would like to know if deleting a .mab file will only cause it be re-created.
    I hesitate to experiment.
    Thank you

    Remove files two default mab, abook.mab (PAB) or history.mab (collected addresses) will result in empty files with these names are automatically re-created on reboot of TB.

    There are a few ideas for sharing here address books:

  • How can I prevent the error "Firefox is already running" message while trying to open the links and FF has already been opened by a symbolic link?

    I use symbolic links and shortcuts of programs as a way to easily open different Firefox profiles IE. one for casual/personal use and the other for work. It works well, but I get the error message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" if I try to open external links with FF as my default browser. FF is actually open and works very well, but I guess that it does not recognize this fact due to how I started the beginning of the process.

    I could not add executables symbolically related to the component of default program. Is there a way to get around this error or another way to solve this problem?

  • How to create a symbolic link for Window 7?

    I'm trying to put in place a Web of Appache server to experiment with WordPress development.  I installed a program called XAMPP installs the MYSQL server, the Appache server and PHP stuff necessary to create a working environment.  The author of the book suggested that I create a separate directory C:\WPDev to use for the development of WordPress.  I was able to make the necessary changes in the httpd.conf file for Apache server to recognize this place, but now I can't return to the PHPAdmin Panel I need to manipulate the MySQL database.

    So, what I thought I would do, is create a symbolic link to the original webroot folder in order to access these applications.  The command to do this, I read is:

    MKLINK [[/ D] |] [/H] | [/J]] The link target

    /D creates a directory symbolic link.  Default is a file
    symbolic link.
    /H creates a hard instead of a symbolic link link.
    /D creates a directory junction.
    Link specifies the new symbolic link name.
    Target Specifies the path (relative or absolute), which means the new link.

    My problem now is the following.  I am logged on as administrator, and yet I get this error message when I try to use the command:

    c:\WPDev>Mklink/d: xampp C:\xampp\htdocs
    You don't have sufficient privileges to perform this operation.

    Why have I not sufficient privileges to perform this operation as an administrator on this machine?  This makes not much sense to me.

    My guess is that it has to do with the permissions to this administrator user ID.  Looks like the WPDev directory inherits the permissions of the parent disk, but unlike Windows XP, I can't just take control of this directory and start to change the permissions.  When I look at the permissions summary, I think I should be able to do.   I think I have all the permissions, but there may be something on the command mklink that I'm missing.

    You need to elevate your privileges:

    1 log in under an administrator account.
    2. click on the start planet.
    3. type the three letters cmd in the search box.
    4. press on Ctrl + Shift + Enter
    5. click on "run as Administrator".
    6 type the mklink command.
    You can also use linkd.exe that doesn't require elevated privileges. It is provided with the Windows 2000 Technical Resource Kit.

  • ThinApp with symbolic links

    I'm working on a bunch of ThinApp for an application that stores a local configuration file in the folder program files. The location of the configuration file has to sit in the folder program files. We seek to use symbolic links to centralize this configuration file for a network path. This will give you more easy management and update this file.

    This is my challenge. When packing the application, the symbolic link is replaced by the actual file and then included in the package. I need to find a way to maintain this symbolic link, or alternatively have ThinApp run a command to start the application to create this link.

    I'm looking for some advice here on what would be the best approach. Or am I heading to a dark path?

    I can configure the ThinApp to run a script or command to the launch of the program to put a symbolic link in the folder program files this application?

    Thank you!

    I do not think that symblic links will work with ThinApp... Alternative I put the. CONF file, on a network share and then set up a vb script in my package which will copy the conf.file to each launch.

    Here is a very simple example:

    Function OnFirstParentStart

    SourceFile = "Z:\ConfigurationFilePath\Config.ini."
    DestFile = ExpandPath ("%ProgramFilesDir%\Application Folder\Config.ini")
    ' Use FileSystemObject to check that the Source file exists
    Set objFSO = CreateObject ("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    If objFSO.FileExists (SourceFile) then
    ' If the source file exists, copy it into the virtual file system
    "we assume the %ProgramFilesDir%\MyApplication virtual directory already exists in the package
    objFSO.CopyFile SourceFile, DestFile, TRUE
    End if
    End Function
