Is there a way to recover the EFS encrypted files stored on an external drive without the original of the certificate?

I had photos/files stored on an external drive and have been encrypted with EFS in XP. The main drive crashed, all keys have been lost. Got a new main drive, installed the new OS and now can't access encrypted files.

Unless you can retrieve parts of your old drive or have a backup of your encryption certificate, you have probably lost all of your encrypted data.  Recovery agents work only if they are in place when the file/folder is initially encrypted.  A program like AEFSDR might be able to resurrect your old certificate from your old drive if it is readable at all.  If you plan to use EFS in the future, make sure you read the following article the court - particularly paragraph entitled "why you should back up your certificates.

  • I have lost my EFS (ENCRYPTING File System) to change my OS. How can I recover my data.

Some time ago I encrypt my jpeg with password file. I changed the operating system yesterday. by the operating system to format I lost my certificate EFS (ENCRYPTING File System) and at the moment I have no backup certificates. so please help me, can I recover my data. If yes how?

    Hello

Thanks for posting the request in the Microsoft community forums!

If your encryption key is lost or damaged and you don't have a way to recover your data, the data is lost. Also, you will lose data if you store your encryption key on a smart card and the smart card is damaged or lost. To make sure you can always access your encrypted data, you should back up your encryption certificate and key.

  • Cannot decrypt previously encrypted files

I had a record that I apparently encypted on my old pc, and I moved the drive containing this folder on my new pc as a 2nd hard drive. Now, all the file names are green and I can't access the file or if I can decrypt the files.

When I try to move the folder, it says I need permission from Fatso666/Eamon, who is the name of my pc and my user name, IE the user I use now...

I still have my old pc and so I exported the certificate of security and then he imported on my new pc, but when I try to uncheck the option encrypt it said access denied.

Had a similar problem after my Windows 7 OS crashed and restored on the same machine id, even user and did not have access to previously encrypted files. The way I fixed it, I searched the files *.pfx, found a backup system efs, right clicked and selected 'install PFX', then got another screen where I entered the password I used when I encrypted file, he agreed and got the message my certificate has been restored. Went into the ownership of the encrypted folder, then select this option to remove encryption and hollow it went Ok. I hope this helps... VIC

  • Restore failed image because of the message error "system cannot find the specified file (0 x 80070002). Is my file of the backup OK folder structure?

I had to reinstall clean Windows 7 64-bit because of the failure of the RAID 1. I have a picture of my original installation system, but I can't restore it; everything I try, I get the message "system cannot find the specified file (0 x 80070002).  I work through a number of possible solutions, without success so far.

According to the kb/951002 (that is for Vista but I can't find an alternative for Win 7) I made sure that the SYSTEM account has read permission for the backup folders and subfolders.  However, the file structure of the specified in the above article backup folder is different from my image file structure.  Specifically, article specified a structure of 'N.zip' file for the backup files but mine are a mixture of XML documents and VHD - i.e. no "zip" files Also, my GlobalCatalog file does not what kind of file, for example, it wouldn't ".wbcat" required file type specified in the article.

The differences above could explain the inability to restore the image and if so, any ideas on what to do about it?

  • Error: The system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002)) While performing a regular system backup

I just tried my regular backup process and I received the following message:

    Hi Barbra Wagner,

This problem may occur if you back up a library that contains custom folders that are located under your user profile.

Could you please let us know about where are you trying to save?

I suggest you check the steps in the section: resolution of scenario 1 of the following article and check.

  • Error: The system cannot find the specified file (0 x 80070002), when you perform the backup of Windows.

Original title: missing for InputPersonalization file

I used the Windows 7 backup utility for several years and recently it has begun to generate the following error:

Backup has encountered a problem during backup of the C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\InputPersonalization file. Error: (the system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002)

I checked with Windows Explorer and confirmed that this file does not exist in this way. Instead, the file exists in the path under my local account.

How can I stop this error? In addition to a clean backup, I like to keep the overall system as clean as possible.

  • Windows 7 backup (the system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002))

    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
I'm NOT under a system dual boot, OR trying to save to an external drive.

I get the following error message after you run backup.
Backup has encountered a problem during backup of the file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Audio Interviews Etc. error: (the system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002))
The Audio Interviews etc folder does NOT exist on my HD.  I know because I deleted it.
It would seem that the backup uses a master list to determine which files should be saved and where are these files.
I ran regedit looking for some Audio Interviews and did not get a hit.
I also ran sfc/scannow and without errors, etc. were found.  "... Windows resource protection did not find any breach of integrity... »
Where is this list and can remove Audio Interviews Etc. She?
Create a folder called Audio Interviews etc in the folder systemprofile seems a kludgy way to deal with this issue.
    Suggestions/answers would be appreciated.
    TIA

    Hello

I see that you have found an error after performing a backup. I'll help you with this problem.

As you already mentioned that you deleted the file, I would like to display hidden files and folders and check once more to confirm that the file is not present in the computer.

Make sure the show the hidden files and folders option is turned on. To do this, follow these steps:

    Windows 7:

    1. start Windows Explorer. To do this, click Start, type userinit.exe in the Search box and press ENTER.

    2. click on organize, and then click folder and Search Options.

    3. click on the view tab.

    4. click on the next option to DISPLAY FILES AND FOLDERS HIDDEN - click Apply - OK.

We can also refer to this article and check if that helps.

  • Backup has encountered a problem in file C:\Users\Laura\Saved backup sets. Error: (the system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002))

How can I stop this error after completing a back-up?

    Hello

Thanks for posting the request in the Microsoft community forums.
I understand that you are facing a problem when saving the file. I will definitely help you with this.
    Please answer the following questions.

    1. where exactly you are trying to save the file?
    2. what anti-virus software is installed on the computer?
    3. don't you make changes on the computer before the show?

This problem can occur for the following reasons:

    · The computer stops responding.

    · The copy operation stops.

To resolve the error "Backup has encountered a problem during backup of the file C:\Users\Laura\Saved games. Error: (the system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002)) "on the computer, you can try the following steps:

Please note that windows 8 pro had cleaned originally had windows Vista, even I did find something on the error code: error: (the system cannot find the specified file. (0 x 80070002))

    Hey Amer,

You can ignore this error message. You would usually encounter this problem if the Windows Backup tries to back up files in folders LocalLow, Contacts and research and these files are not present on your computer.

Well, you also have an option to create or exclude files missing, listed in the error message.

If you want to exclude this folder then please refer to the following steps.

    (a) in the backup section, click on "change settings".

    (b) in the dialog box Configure the backup , click Next.

    (c) in the 'you want to save ' dialog box, click on 'Let me choose ', then click on 'Next '.

    (d) navigate to the user profile folder displayed in the error message and clear the check box next to the folders.

    (e) save and exit.

    Hope the helps of information.
