Bad clusters on XPS 720

Hello

I'm not entirely sure if I am faced with a hard drive problem or if something might happen, so I thought I would start here.  A few months ago, I bought an XPS 720 (sheet copied below).  His summer work as a gem until a few nights ago.  As I was game (World of Warcraft, doubt it's important), I had a crash of the game.  Trying to restart, I have been informed that the data of the game files were corrupt and that he had to revert to a previous version.  Just enough, only download the previous version data files are also damaged.

I then tried to reinstall from my original disks in a different directory on the drive, even to download Windows XP SP 3, which must be plugged away for a bit, but invariably report a corrupted data file.  It seems that any file of significant size runs into this problem when I try to load on the drive, no matter from what source.

I also run CHKDSK/Scandisk what bad clusters reveals that he reports in 5 different places, supposedly lightens the, but appears again in repeated CHKDSK/Scandisk runs.  Also, just in case, I've updated my antivirus, ran a complete system scan who come clean.  I caught more later/more big S & D of Spybot, Adaware and ProcessList.  The only questionable content found were a few tracking cookies.

I'm kind of at my wit's end and I was wondering if I was just a butt hard drive should I call Dell to replace or what.  Your ideas and your tips are very much appreciated.

  • 2 bad clusters... Backup restore Microsoft does not work... now what

My dv4 windows 7 SP1 has 2 bad clusters. CHKDSK replaced both of them.  Gdiplus.dll and motccg.inf.  The Microsoft backup will not save or restore my backup of Microsoft because of these bad clusters.  Can I use my full Windows7 install disc - not a restore disc and solve this problem?

Not sure why I made backups of Microsoft if they don't restore because of these bad clustgers, but it is the State that I am now.

I replace the hard drive and use HP restore disks to reinstall Windows.

Back up your important data to an external storage device, the hard disk may fail completely, and you will lose everything.

  • The number of bad Clusters should settle in?

When a popular backup program ("BUP"), I was running for the first time stopped dead about 40%, I was told by the technique of the BUP supports that I had to do a ' CHKDSK [drive letter]:------/ r "then try the BUP.  CHKDSK finds well over 160 "bad clusters" which it "replaced".  I ran the BUP a 2nd time to bar the 63% that it froze.

Unlike a robot, I think that as a robot - I use my knees.  I advanced the reasoning and again ran "CHKDSK [drive letter]:------/ r.  Like the first time, the utility has found a large collection of bad clusters.

    Then the knee kicks.

I understand that "CHKDSK [drive letter]:------/ r ' and what to expect?  I know from experience things can get hairy with a soft who likes to rearrange the objects on disk.

The question becomes: If "CHKDSK [drive letter]:------/ r" is supposed to 'fix' the bad clusters should it not do this on the first pass?

Since he obviously didn't, I refrain from this approach until I better understand its use.

A matter of subtext could also be: EVERY drive is not some bad clusters?

In the meantime, I'll see what the BUP manufacturer must say whether or not his program has zero tolerance for bad clusters.

    Thank you.

    Hello

I suggest you get the data on the system and try to back up any important data, because this HDD is maybe going bad.

  • XPS 720, video card and sound card upgrades?

    Greetings-

A friend gave me his old Dell XPS 720, which I updated to Win7-32.  The upgrade went fine--too easy in fact - and now I'm sorting on all other smaller issues.

I need a recommendation for a new graphics card and a new sound card.  The only thing I use this box is to maintain a website via Adobe CS4 Dreamworks, with the other tools in the suite and surf the net.  No game, no rendering heavy, etc.

    What I want-

-Decent color - graphics but no fan if possible.  The map in this area is now an INVIDIA GTS of the G-Force-250 - and the fan noise is terrible.  My needs are quite easy - is there a map smaller, quieter that I can put on this case in order to eliminate the a fan (which seems to be the highest fan in the Pack)?

Sound card - open what it is as long as it fits and works with this box and Win7-32.

    Thanks for your help/advice-

    -Sean

The integrated SigmaTel 9227 audio system should be good for your use. But any PCI sound card purchased locally would work or you could get an its PCIe x 1 card. Here's what we delivered =
    CT602 PCI Sound Blaster
    F7710 PCI Sound Blaster X - Fi
WW202 PCI Sound Blaster X - Fi XtremeMusic

You should check newegg for price and photos for the PCIe x 16 video cards. This link is sorted by lowest price to highest. None of them work so you have at least a 750w power supply. When you have found a video on the site map, I would look for it locally.

  • No sound from my XPS 720!

    System:

    WD 160 GB HDD

    SP2208WFP monitor

    AS501 Flat panel stereo speakers

    and much more

The problems started 2 weeks ago when my 8800GT video card quit on me.  I finally replaced it yesterday.  I now can't not all sounds on my computer, nada, nothing, nowhere in any way.  And I don't think I tried everthing to understand.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In no particular order... 1 restored the system to the factory settings.

2 disconnected and reconnected my speaker (it's an all in one model attached to the bottom of my screen, I use the earphones especially

so I do not need good speakers)

3 uninstalled, and reinstalled the sound card. (material)

4 uninstalled the old and reinstalled the latest drivers from the disc and soundblaster web site. (software)

5 I checked all forums, all 65 943million 297thousand 477 billion web sites (maybe OK I exaggerate a little bit).

In any case no sound, no wav, no windows startup sounds, no music, no games, no internet.

6 I went into Device Manager, audio video and game controllers to check if the drivers are recognized... and they are.  the device is functioning without conflicts.

7 I went to control panel, sounds, reading , and although there are 4 options work to choose that I selected the Creative SB X - Fi (of work) speakers as my default.

(The other 3 options are "SPDIF out Creative SB X - Fi (work)": "1 Live online!) Virtual cam (work)":"digital output (SPDIF) SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC (work) device.

8 I went into Control Panel, sound, recording , and there are also 4 options work.  I have selected Microphone Array monitor Webcam (SP2208WFP) (work) because my microphone is built into my monitor.

I've had this computer for 16 months with very little problem.  Video card all of a sudden the mouse and card now his acting upward.  The above settings are correct because I put them?  Is there something in the bios that I might have to change.  I've never been to the BIOS and I think it's a very scary place.lol

In any case, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Removal of XPS 720 Raid 0

    Hello

I just bought (and waiting for delivery of) a machine XPS 720 and I will be eager to delete the Raid 0 among the readers. I guess I would need to do the first action I think I have to reinstall the operating system later.

Could someone advise me how to do this? I think that once I have reinstall from the recovery disk that the Raid 0 will be just reimplementation, I don't have any experience with Raid any so I apologize if this is a silly question.

  • Restoration of matrix RAID 0 in XPS 720

    XPS 720
SATA RAID 0 with two drives of 250 GB
    Vista Home Premium

The machine does not start. I have a Dell short start screen, then a black screen with "Missing Operating System" in the upper left.

I ran diagnostic HARD drive under boot options F12 and the two discs. I started on the Dell operating system DVD and tried a repair of the BONE, which failed (details mentioned corruption of the partition table). I'm not sure how to fix a corrupt partition table. I opened a command prompt and use the bootrec.exe to repair the MBR (/FixMbr), who succeeded, but the machine would not boot. Bootrec.exe tried to repair the boot sector (/FixBoot), which failed. I tried to reinstall the operating system, but could not access the drive C:\ (no recognizable files on this drive system).

I am inclined to C:\ reformatting and reinstallation of Vista, but I have no experience working with RAID arrays and not sure how to proceed from here. I don't want to break the table. If I reformat C:\ and use the OS from Dell DVD to restore the system to "factory condition", that will be the original of the RAID 0 configuration restoration or will I need to do it "manually" after reformatting? If the latter, it can be done easily by entering the configuration and activation RAID 0 on two drives before reinstalling the operating system? If so, then using the operating system DVD Dell to restore the system to "factory condition" will be used to partition the table as it was shipped? I don't know that it is very obvious that I am well over my head here and quite clueless. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

If I do a "Factory System Recovery" of "FACTORY_IMAGE" (D :) ', the recovery process complete "map around ' clusters and bad sectors and produce a full C: recovery accurate?  Or is - this disc 2009 so old that I need to replace it and reinstall Windows 7 using my "system repair discs?

If you use the /r switch in Chkdsk it tries to fix the bad clusters or move the data to a cluster of good.  CHKDSK will isolate the bad cluster and do not use it.  Maybe it's time to think about replacing the hard drive, it could be near the end of its service life.

You can perform a restore factory on this hard drive, but you must back up the data that you have on your E drive on an external drive, preferably an external hard drive, because they can be erased.

You need to install a new hard drive, it must be of equal size or greater than what you have now.  To install the new OS, you will need to use recovery discs that you can order from HP.  If you live in the USA/Canada, call HP at this number 1-800-334-5144 and see if you can still get a set of recovery disks.  Otherwise the site worldwide: http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/support.html

If HP does not have the recovery disks, you can order them from the surgeons of the computer:

  • bad cluster

    Hello

I have a Dv3-4305se. I have a few bad clusters on my HARD drive and I think the best way is to replace it. Am I wrong?

could you be kind and tell me what type of HARD drive I should looking for?

is this laptop support sata2 or ssd?

my choice is a 1 TB sata2 7200 RPM probably wd or seagate. is it ok? do you another reccomendation?

is there something specific I should consider when I buy one? I mean the dimensions and specifications of the hhd?

    Thank you

    Hey there Aminam,.

Your computer supports SATA and all SATA drives are compatible. Even if you get 2 SATA or SATA 3 disks, they are backwards compatible and should work fine, just with a lower speed. SSD should also work perfectly with your system, once again to your SATA speed supported (probably lower than that supported by the SSD).

Pretty much any 2.5-inch SSD should work fine in your system.

For the HARD drive, I might suggest you see WD Black series (if you want a 7 200 RPM). They are reliable, with the duration of the guarantee, fast and smooth race and are designed to deliver great performance in laptops. Here's a link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=790#Tab2 .

You can also view double WD - WD Black2. It combines a 120 GB SSD with a 1 TB HARD drive in one. Unlike hybrid hard drives, it also gives you the freedom to choose what to store on the SSD part and what to keep in the part of the HARD drive. Here is a link to that too: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1190

    Hope this helps

    Captain_WD.

You are right, the XPS 700 has no support for Core 2 Quad processors.

  • Replacement of ATI cards in XPS 8500

Im looking to buy an XPS 8500 system to replace my old, but faithful, XPS 720, when Dell begins to deliver systems with Win 8 onboard in native mode. My question is if I can replace the ATI onbard with an a nVidia card like nVidia n guy? Thank you!

    Eric

Yes.  AMD or Nvidia cards will work.  With the new 8500, I'd look for recent PCI Express 3.0 cards because the motherboard will support them.  Therefore, the 7000 series AMD or Nvidia 600 series.  More Nvidia GTX 600 cards will be released if all goes well, by the time you want to get one that will work with your diet.  Do not forget that the 8500 XPS will have only one unit of 460 watts compared to what you have on your 720 which is either 750 or 1000 watts.
