Benefits of virtualization from Citrix on ESXi 4 Server?

Hello

We will implement Citrix Server on a DELL PowerEdge (unrelated to FC SAN) server offline.  Citrix consultant suggests us install ESXi 4 on the DELL server before you install Citrix.  He says that he will facilitate the backup task.

We wonder if there is any advantage to do?

Thank you

Tony

Hi Tony,.

Several environments means in a single ESXi server, you will be able to create multiple virtual machines by using resources of maximum server rather than use the physical server and just use resources from 20 to 30%.

If your citrix deployment is large scale and requires many users to connect and many applications published, then you can opt for a physical server, but if the installation of citrix does not involve so many users (less than 50) and virtual environments should work fine with you. With virtualization, you can also save your citrix VM and in the cases of corruption of failure all you need are the power on your backup citrix server. Usually, I make a copy of all my production virtual server after all the applications are installed and licenses are applied because it saves time later, when corruption or failure occurs.

I assume you are using "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1".

The host or the guest OS (Windows 2008R2, Windows 7) ESXi 4.1 is supported in this version

    See: http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv401.html

The first version of the converter that supports the foregoing is the "VMware vCenter Converter vCenter Server 4.1 4.2.

    See: http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vcc_42_rel_notes.html

I really hope that VMware will soon release a new version for the stand-alone converter.

  • Synchronize two schemas from database on a linux server using Oracle GoldenGate

I followed this guide ( http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/fmw/goldengate/12c/OGG12c_Installation/index.html?cid=9167 & ssid = 0 ) and for two different databases running on the same instance of database schemas.

What I have now is a Linux server with two Oracle database schemas.
I have access through my Linux virtual machine. I want to do the synchronization possible between them.

I use Oracle GoldenGate to make this possible. What should I do now? Goldengate is must be installed in the server too? I'm totally new to this situation. Can someone give me at least the major steps before going to the more comprehensive study?

    Well understood. This helped.

  • Migration of VMs from ESX to ESXi 5.5 4.0

    Hi all

What would be the best way to migrate virtual machines running cluster ESX 4.0 to 5.5 ESXi Cluster.

In my view, there are two ways to do:

    1. Map (VMFS3) LUNS to the new cluster ESXi 5.5
      1. Shut down the virtual machine under the old cluster
      2. Remove inventory under the old cluster
      3. Add the VMFS3 LUN to the title of the new group
      4. Add the server to the inventory
      5. Power on virtual machines
      6. Perhaps svMotion machine virtual of VMFS3 new VMFS5 data store.
    2. Migrate the virtual via Vmware Converter Standalone Computer Cluster again.

I think that method 1 would be the fastest, but I doubt if it is really practical, especially considering that the same data store/logic unit number will be writable by 2 different versions of ESX 4.0 and 5.5 at the same time.

And method 2 seems the best way to me before that this will give me a possibility to start the virtual machine on the old cluster conversion failed if V2V or the destination virtual machine has problems.

With above I have also considered possible vmotion, adding the former ESX host 4.0 under the pile of 5.5 ESXi but Xeon Intel processors are quite old and being unfit for vmotion, designed to allow CVS too, but for this I must put the new servers CPU up to the level of the old CPU and post migration of servers will have to close all VM to put all the servers again at their optimum level by disabling EVC.

So could someone please guide which would be the best way, because we intend to migrate about 150 virtual machines. Thank you.

between steps 1 and 2 take the new backups just in case. You have no need to have both writable for each cluster between steps 2 and 3 remove the volume from the old cluster. Also, between cold steps 4 and 5, you can migrate them to the new from the old storage.

  • Windows 2008 R2 VM disk system increased substantially after moving from VM to ESXi host 5.1 to 5.5 ESXi host using vCenter Converter Standalone

    Hello:

I moved a Windows 2008 R2 VM from a 5.1 ESXi host to an ESXi host 5.5 using vCenter Converter Standalone.  The c: / drive system passed largely to where I now have to extend the volume.  Is this normal/expected behavior?  Perhaps the conversion/move creates temporary files I can delete?

    Thanks much for the ideas.

This is not the expected behavior.

Size of the disk is defined during the conversion and which will not increase by its own during conversion.

Now, you need to V2V, if you want to reduce the volume.

  • scripts running remotely from vma to esxi

2 esxi servers. a standyby of an asset. a day before two scripts that backup host1. I have no problem running it locally from Server 2

but when I try to run the command remotely via ssh of vma, it does not

Check the script to make sure that the full path to the 'my text file' exists. I would never use spaces or special characters in the warehouses of data, files, name vm, etc. Use underscores if you want to separate words for clarity. Spaces require a lot of additional error control and programming. To use spaces or special characters, you must escape at all.

  • SSH from MAC to ESXi

I'm sshing from my MAC to an ESXi box using the native terminal via the "ssh username@hostname" command. I can log in and run a few commands with no problems, but when I run ESXTOP, he does ' t having display pretty with columns as u would see on mastic or other clinet... trying to understand what could cause this... do you know if there are parameters that I can play with on my terminal... I know esxtop works fine if I use windows and PuTTY...

See the screenshot for my results esxtop from my Mac.

xterm xterm-color is the emulation of terminal used to display lines and columns on your screen.  So when you connect from your client to your esxi host, the client indicates what encapsulation type to use.  If the server (in this case esxi), does not have the mode you want, you get what you see, where the rows and columns don't match with the screen you use.

xterm is the default / standard emulator of terminal for x window systems and is fairly widely used.

xterm-color is more modern for use with modern servers where you get the color highlighting added, that esxi is not for you.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • How to speed up the transfer of files to and from data warehouses ESXi

    Hi people!

Our company has a large number of

VMware ESXi 3.5 and 4.0 servers. (Note: this is not the free ESXi, the)

Paid ESX Server.) They generally work very well for us. The only area of

problem I have is to transfer files to and from data warehouses on

    the machines.

Because we do not have the ESX Server paid, I can't

use vMotion or VirtualCenter to transfer virtual machines from one location

to the other. So, if I need to move a virtual machine to a different host,

the only solution I have is to download the VM

files of the database on a local or network drive and then download

paste them into the new data store, using the vSphere Client. The problem

with this is that I found it is extremely slow. This may take

hours just to copy a virtual machine.

    Does anyone know of one

best way to do that would reduce the transfer time?

    Thank you!

  • Impossible to get VM to boot from CD on ESXi 3.5 U4

    Hello

I have a Dell PowerEdge 400SC, which I use as a small test server ESXi 3.5 U4. Spec is P4 2.6Ghz & 1.5 GB of RAM. I added an Adaptec 29160 scsi card and a 20 GB scsi drive, which is where it is installed ESXi for. Then, I have a hard drive 40 GB IDE, which I use as a data store for my virtual machines, which is the primary master IDE device. I also have a CD-RW/DVD combo drive which is the IDE secondary master device.

I created a virtual machine with 10 GB hard drive, 512 MB RAM, 1 x NIC and CDROM. I am trying to install Windows 2003 server on this virtual machine, but when I put the Win2003 installation CD in the drive and start the virtual machine, just trying to perform a PXE boot from the network, and then says "Operating System not found", he does not even seem to try to boot from the CD.

I have the settings of computer virtual CD/DVD drive is "connect at power on" and pointing to the device host: / vmfs/devices/genide / vmhba000:0:0

I also started the virtual machine and went into the BIOS and moved the CD-ROM drive for the first boot device.

The Win2003 cd is bootable, I tested leaving in the drive and reboot the server. When it starts, it goes into the Win2003 installation program. I can't get to do this in the virtual machine.

Can anyone suggest what I might hurt?

    Thank you

    Ben

    The screen is just.

But seems that your CD does not work in the virtual machine (I have a similar problem with a SATA CD).

Are you sure that the CD is connected and the host CD (in the properties of the VM) value?

Have you tried with an ISO file?

  • Switch from ESX to ESXi 5.5 VMFS3 4.1

    Hi all

I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 environment to ESXi 5.5.

I'll create a new 5.5 vCenter server and connect guests 4.1 so that I can vMotion and not having any downtime. I will then perform a new installation of ESXi 5.5 1 host at a time.

My question is if VMFS3 is supported with ESXi 5.5? When I configure the host to connect to the San volumes are currently VMFS3? I don't want them to be formatted automatically resulting in downtime?

    Thank you

Yes, vSphere 5. supports fully both VMFS3 than VMFS5. Unless you select this option to replace one of the VMFS3 volumes with the installation of the OS/hypervisor you're fine.

  • The benefits of enabling LDAP authentication for ESXi hosts?

    Hello

We have been and need to justify the advantages and disadvantages of joining ESXi hosts to Active Directory?

    Thanks 4 your help.

I see a benefit for sure you can assign complete administrative privileges to individual users in a group. If you assume a group of 10 directors of ESX, individual users can connect to the host via LDAP. Will they make changes or crash the system, you will know who did it. You can follow the verification very easily using this method. Otherwise, everyone will connect as root, and we do not know who is to blame when something crashed, etc.

It's pretty easy to join the ESXi host in AD and I don't see any problem that I respect. It is individual decision whether to implement or not.
