Migration of VMs from ESX to ESXi 5.5 4.0

Hi all

What would be the best way to migrate virtual machines running cluster ESX 4.0 to 5.5 ESXi Cluster.

In my view, there are two ways to do:

  1. Map (VMFS3) LUNS to the new cluster ESXi 5.5
    1. Shut down the virtual machine under the old cluster
    2. Remove inventory under the old cluster
    3. Add the VMFS3 LUN to the title of the new group
    4. Add the server to the inventory
    5. Power on virtual machines
    6. Perhaps svMotion machine virtual of VMFS3 new VMFS5 data store.
  2. Migrate the virtual via Vmware Converter Standalone Computer Cluster again.

I think that method 1 would be the fastest, but I doubt if it is really practical, especially considering that the same data store/logic unit number will be writable by 2 different versions of ESX 4.0 and 5.5 at the same time.

And method 2 seems the best way to me before that this will give me a possibility to start the virtual machine on the old cluster conversion failed if V2V or the destination virtual machine has problems.

With above I have also considered possible vmotion, adding the former ESX host 4.0 under the pile of 5.5 ESXi but Xeon Intel processors are quite old and being unfit for vmotion, designed to allow CVS too, but for this I must put the new servers CPU up to the level of the old CPU and post migration of servers will have to close all VM to put all the servers again at their optimum level by disabling EVC.

So could someone please guide which would be the best way, because we intend to migrate about 150 virtual machines. Thank you.

between steps 1 and 2 take the new backups just in case. You have no need to have both writable for each cluster between steps 2 and 3 remove the volume from the old cluster. Also, between cold steps 4 and 5, you can migrate them to the new from the old storage.

    Hello

We use an IBM Bladecenter for VMWare. Virtual Machines are on a Fibre Channel-connected SAN.

Unfortunately a while a go, I mixed the Installation. Now I have ESX and ESXi installed. The two Version 4.0.0 (261974) I don't want to go back to new ESXi installation. I understand there is not any easy update to change that.

Even if we have no backups, I'm afraid of ESXi trying to format THAT SAN during installation. If my plan is this.

For each host ESX installation I do the following:

    (1) using the vMotion I clear the host of all the virtual machines and then close it.

    (1) in the SAN config, I refuse this host access to the San. In this way, I Don t risk losing VMs on the SAN during installation.

    (2) I install ESXi and start.

    (3) the host must be connected to the vcenter.

    (4) in the SAN config, I'm hosting this host to access the San.

    (5) I have let the Rescan host HBAs to the SAN.

Do you see the flaws? Or do I have the perfect Plan?

Hello and welcome to the forums.

As long as you have all your settings (accounts users, information network/vswitch, etc.) documented for these ESX hosts, this plan seems fine.  You could also just draw on the FC cables on the ESX host, rather than make zoning changes.

    Good luck!

  • No direct upgrade from ESX to ESXi?

Am I right that you cannot run a simple update to ESX to ESXi?  Talking about versions 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 here.  I can do a new installation easily enough, but I'd rather not.

Also, just as a question, is there a way to check if a host ESX or ESXi vCenter?  It seems like it should be obvious, but I can't find it there.

    Thank you.

    Hello.

Correct, there is no simple update to change versions.

If you select the host in vCenter, examine the area above the tabs to display the version information.

    Good luck!

  • Conversion from ESX to ESXi licenses

Is it possible to use a license ESX to ESXi Server?  If this is not the case, what is involved in the conversion of an ESX license to an ESXi license?

    Thank you

There is no difference in licensing.  The license number is issued for vSphere, and you can use with ESXi or ESX.

You have vcenter? If you cannot migrate from cold or storage vmotioin - otherwise just copy the directory of the virtual machine from one host to the other housing the host using something like WinSCP - and re-register on the new host. Alternatively, you can use VMware Converter to migrate the environment vSphere-

  • Switch from ESX to ESXi 5.5 VMFS3 4.1

    Hi all

I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 environment to ESXi 5.5.

I'll create a new 5.5 vCenter server and connect guests 4.1 so that I can vMotion and not having any downtime. I will then perform a new installation of ESXi 5.5 1 host at a time.

My question is if VMFS3 is supported with ESXi 5.5? When I configure the host to connect to the San volumes are currently VMFS3? I don't want them to be formatted automatically resulting in downtime?

    Thank you

Yes, vSphere 5. supports fully both VMFS3 than VMFS5. Unless you select this option to replace one of the VMFS3 volumes with the installation of the OS/hypervisor you're fine.

  • Migration of models from ESX 3.5 to vSphere

Do you know if the models created in ESX3.5 can be migrated to vSphere without effort and required change?

Yes you can use the model created in 3.5 in 4.x. But, in my opinion, it would be more preferable:

1 convert the old model in vm

    2. update to current vmware tools

3 update material virtual version 7

    4 convert vm template

Could someone explain me the best way to migrate a VM from esx 3.5 to 4.1 on different storage?

ESX 3.5 is a single host, esxi 4.1 is running with vcenter

SOURCE: the virtual machine is hosted on a netapp THAT SAN attached to esx 3.5

DESTINATION: the virtual machine should migrate to SAN DELL attached to esxi 4.1

    Thanks for your response

    Hello

You could stop you VM and he returned with VMotion Wizard. When the virtual machine is declining by VMotion Wizard will ask if you want to move the virtual disk in a different data store.

    Good luck.

  • ESX to ESXi upgrade

  • Application of ESX or ESXi Standard license or vSphere new purchase

    Hello

I read the following in another thread,

"You can apply any license that you purchase, be it Standard/advanced/business/Business Plus or even packages for small businesses vSphere Essentials and Essentials Plus, ESX or ESXi. Both will give you the same features allowed when it is applied. »

Once the license applies for example to ESX, does this mean I won't be able to change my mind at a later stage and move all my installations to ESXi?  Thanks for your replies.

    Best regards

    Robin

You can't really "switch" from ESX to ESXi - you will need to reinstall the hypervisor. But you will be able to use the same license key for ESXi you used for ESX.

  • Move from 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 possible?

    Hello

I'm shure, that this question was asked several times already, but I was looking for a long time now and I have nowhere found an answer. The question is simple:

Is it possible to update via update 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 Manager?

I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version '' i ''? As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...

    Best regards and thank you

    Roland

I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version 'i '.

You cannot change the type without a reinstall

As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...

It's almost a certainty, he's not going to happen tomorrow, and when that happens they will always support the ESX version.
