Best file types to use
I'm currently building a presentation for a company file. They have a wide range of spec PCs that they would see the presentation on and I want to make sure they can see it smoothly even if they are consulting on a PC which is years and years with very little power RAM and graphics. So, there must be a preferred file type that people tend to save in any event. JPG. BMP etc. for images or. AVI. Etc. MPEG for video. Is there a best file type to use to ensure the presentation works well on all computers (or almost)?
Also there are the properties of the image I should avoid, like alpha masking?
Finally Flash. What is the best way to save and create a Flash file which can be seen better on any PC?
The publication. I had problems with this before. Files must be imported in the presentation or left outside? Some advice about this?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
IMO, it does not matter for delivery local .exe. And be aware that even
If you do domestic things, like most movie formats, will always be
"related to". The only advantage to "linked to" is usually if you want to
to be able to easily change the assets without having to open the Authorware file
(I often link to a voiceover files so I can just swap external .wavs if)
There are changes instead of having to re-import them in Authorware).

Windows gives you integrated programs to open the image as png files.
In Vista, use Windows Photo Gallery to open png files.
In Windows 7, if you use it, you can use Windows Photo Viewer to open png files.
If you have installed Windows Live Essentials, you can use Windows live Photo Gallery to open png files.

Original title: WMP "can't play wav or midi.
Using WMP 11 on Windows XP SP3.
Windows Media Player has somehow forgotten how to play wav or midi files. Doubleclicking either of these file types give an error "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file. " There is a button 'Close' and 'Web Help' which still informs me, "you met the C00D1199 error message... ". ». Following the advice given nothing less than useful.
I can easily play these files with RealPlayer or VLC so I don't think it's a driver problem, and it wasn't a corruption right after installing the other players. WMP seems to work OK when playing music or AVI. And there is no harm to hear a sound (wav or midi) in Windows for various system events. Have already uninstalled/reinstalled WMP without result.
Thanks for your reply.
I have since determeined the problem comes from an updated codec package I installed a few weeks ago. These codecs were from Shark007 which I believe is a Microsoft MVP. Use the codecs from this site for a number of years without any problems so I did not initially suspect it was the source of the problem. I uninstalled the codec pack and installed K-light package and everything seems to be Ok now. Now, I'll be in contact with the members of this forum.

Screen that allows you to choose which program you want to use to open a file type with
No error code, just a question. I want to reset my screen ' open the file with "always ask instead of always open with"a particular program. I used to get a screen that says "Windows can perform the same action whenever you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file" and below list the different selections (Windows Media Player, Dell Power DVD, etc.). Now, most is opened automatically by a program and I want to reset it to always ask. Arrived at a screen awhile back which allowed me to define each type of file type (audio, video, and mixed content etc.), but can't figure out how to get it reset everything to always ask.
Learned a lot of new stuff!

- y at - it software that could help me.which will work with my Media Player to convert almost any format or find the good codec.so I can watch my videos, I have downloaded on my documents.there need some software out there that would do this work.so my media player 11 play my videos.
Hi Bbdunford,
O what is the file format?
O if it works well before?
Today, there are hundreds of audio and video codecs in use. Some were created by Microsoft, but the vast majority of codecs have been created by other companies, organizations or individuals. By default, the Windows operating system and the player includes a number of the most popular codecs, such as MP3, Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video.
There might be times, however, when you want to read the content that is compressed with a codec that does not include Windows or the default player. In many cases, you can download the necessary codec on the web for free or for a fee. And, in some cases, the player can automatically use the codecs installed by other reading programs and the creation of digital media on your computer.
You may encounter this error message for the following reasons:
1. the file type is supported by the drive, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the player.
2 - the file might have been encoded with a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player. If this is the case, Windows Media Player cannot play the file.
You can try the steps and check if it makes a difference.
1. in order to determine what codec was used with a specific file, play the file in the player, if possible. When the file is playing, right-click the file in the library, and then click Properties. On the file tab, look at the sections of video codec and Audio codec.
2 download and install Codecs by clicking on the PLAYER tab and check. To connect to the Internet and automatically download Codecs player
3. configure the protocol settings
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
In the Streaming protocols area, select all the check boxes Protocol.
When connecting to a server running Windows Media Services, Windows Media Player tries to use all selected protocols.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file. (((PLEASE HELP)))
I understand that this has been a matter of repetition and I made the suggestions listed and nothing works. This just started happening, although downloading songs, and once they are finished I'm not able to play them with Windows Media Player. The initial message indicates that the file has an extension that is not recognized by Windows Media Player.
I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop with Windows Vista Home. Any suggestions? What should I chahnge how I download and save music?
Hey Taylor09,
You may find that you are getting this message in Windows Media Player due to one of the following reasons.
a. you try to play a file that is not supported by the player.
b. you are trying to play a file that the player does not support, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the player.
Step 1:
Confirm that you are trying to play a supported file type. The following article lists the types of files (formats) supported by Windows Media Player.
Information on the types of media files that supports Windows Media Player
Note that if you tried to play the file type is included in this table, the file might have been encoded with a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player. If this is the case, Windows Media Player cannot play the file.
Step 2:
Download the necessary codec to play the file.
For more information of Codec, see: Codecs: frequently asked questions

- now that the full version of k'lite seems to stop what is happening why hasent windows incorporated something similar in the windows media player 11, or they have another type of codec full, we can use to make this.only so many people have the same problem .please can help you.
Hi bbdunford,
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file.
You may encounter this error message for the following reasons:
(a) the file type is supported by the drive, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the player.
(b) the file might have been encoded with a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player. If this is the case, Windows Media Player cannot play the file.
Windows media player will play only the files and videos only if it supports this type of file.
Method 1
Check if the video file format is supported by Windows media player using the link below.
Information on the types of media files that supports Windows Media Player
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/316992
If the files are not supported by Windows media player, then you will need to use a few players from third party that supports this file format.
Method 2
See the link below for more information on the codec.

I got this error message when you try to play an MP4 video. Help please!
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file.
You can try to download the http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=507 Codec Installation Package
If this does not work, you may need to get some third party software to convert MP4 video to the longer Windows Media Player video format supported like WMV, AVI in order to solve the problem
