Best practices: multiple partitions on a single vmdk or partition by vmdk

Hello all-

I would like to get your opinions on the best practices for the vmdk file server installation program.

The drive C partition would be allotted for the operating system, while E, F... to store the data of the partitions.

configuration 1:

vmdk1 = thick disk of provisioned by a partition of drive c.

vmdk2 = thickness accommodation provisioned disk partitions E, f...

Installer 2

vmdk1 = thick disk of provisioned by a C partition

vmdk2 = thick disk of provisioned by a partition E

vmdk3 = thick disk of provisioned by a partition F

.......

Also the partitions of multiple data configured as independent + permanent virtual disks due to snapshots. My logic is that OS (C drive) is used for snapshots in test of new software for example while the data partitions act as the storage disks that need to keep the most recent files regardless of the return to an older snapshot. BTW data partitions regularly are Word, excel, photos and so on.

also, I realize that I could have a single example, E: data with several shared folders partition, but given that each folder is for another Department could cause more trouble when space more and more in the future. Great VMDK could take more time to develop. Not sure again.

Thank you

Hello

in general, virtualization does not change much on the disk IO.

You can use the same rules that you would use to size a physical server.

Multiple vmdk mean multiple targets for your I/o load.

Best solution if IO load/troughput high or low response time should be reached, you create multiple VMDK and spread over several data stores.

I know it's possible, but is there any reference to it is not not a good idea for a particular reason? Is there loss of features or performance?

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here regarding the placement of VMDK. I agree with what others have said about her becomes more complicated when you across several data VMFS stores VMDK. But having said that there are good reasons why you can spread them out. You can store files to boot OS on disk volumes and slower data for servers in high performance like SQL and Exchange on a higher level of storage for example.

Another thing to keep in mind - if I remember correctly, by default a snapshot for a virtual machine with VMDK in several stores data is stored in the location where the first VMDK was created. It is important to understand how snapshots can become very large, if you're not careful, and you could accidentally fill a LUN, and take a number of VMs. I believe you can make a change to the VMX to change the location where the snapshot files are stored so you can look into that as well.

Could be interesting to ask more http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservergen/threads that you can get more answers.

That said I would say that very much depends on what you intend to do with the server, and of course how much space you have available.

For a general server I would probably go with two volumes, the C:\ drive for the file system and a second volume for your data, for example E:\. I recommend at LEAST 30 GB for the C:\, 40-50 GB preference, since updates, patches, etc will burn way over time and it's much easier to start big than to try to develop later.

If you are running the Terminal Services, then you will probably need a larger C:\ amount as a large part of the user profile data is stored there in order to run lack of space fairly easily.

As I said, it depends on what you do, how much space and disks you have available etc, it isn't really a one-size-fits-all answers.

Yes, create a separate virtual disk (VMDK) for each partition or volume under Windows. If the workload is light - to begin with, you can leave all VMDK in working area of the virtual machine and then if you need to divide the discs in different data stores you can do it later.

Hi all

Say that when I do a p2v, physical server with single disk is divided into several partitions (C, D, E). During P2V using VConverter 4.3, I get no option to break the partitions different multiple vmdk files. Whenever he goes to single vmdk with multiple partitions, even as a source.

I am unable to extend the size of the disk using diskpart if there are multiple partitions on single VMDK, alternatives?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you

TechGuru,

For p2v depending on whether you are doing, you can migrate each letter to each vmdk.

C: - VMDK0

D: - VMDK1

with this configuration you it more flexibility to manage and security guest operating system crash.

I have several virtual machines who commit a good amount of data on a daily basis. These virtual machines have two VMDK; one where the operating system and that where data is committed to. Virtual machines are currently configured to store in the same data store. There is a growing need to increase the size of the VMDK where data are stored, and so I would like these put special in a separate data store. What is the best practice to take an existing virtual computer and moving just a VMDK in another data store?

• Single VMDK for multiple virtual machines in esx3.5?

Hello

Is it possible to use a single VMDK to host several VM in ESX3.5 or is this feature on the way? I think the vmware view tech that allows you to host multiple virtual machines to a single image and store only the deltas for VMS replca.

We organize several ts who are about 12 GB per image, and each server is essentially the same. It would reduce the space if these could be consolidated at the level of vmware.

Thank you very much.

What you are referring to the notion of linked Clones, it's something completely different to share a single VMDK. with linked clones, you actually run mulitple copies of a single Machine. This fuinctionality is not available in ESX Raw but is a characteristic of Lab Manager and VMware View Premium.

• Best practices for retrieving a single value from the Oracle Table

I'm using Oracle Database 11 g Release 11.2.0.3.0.

I would like to know the best practice to do something like that in a PL/SQL block:

DECLARE
v_student_id    student.student_id%TYPE;
BEGIN
SELECT  student_id
INTO    v_student_id
FROM    student
WHERE   last_name = 'Smith'
AND     ROWNUM = 1;
END;

Of course, the problem here is that when there is no success, the NO_DATA_FOUND exception is thrown, which interrupts the execution. So, what happens if I want to continue despite the exception?

Yes, I could create a block nested with EXCEPTION section, etc, but it seems awkward for what seems to be a very simple task.

I've also seen this handled like this:

DECLARE
v_student_id    student.student_id%TYPE;
CURSOR c_student_id IS
SELECT  student_id
FROM    student
WHERE   last_name = 'Smith'
AND     ROWNUM = 1;
BEGIN
OPEN c_student_id;
FETCH c_student_id INTO v_student_id;
IF c_student_id%NOTFOUND THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('not found');
ELSE
(do stuff)
END IF;
CLOSE c_student_id;
END;

But it still seems to kill an Ant with a hammer.

What is the best way?

Thanks for any help you can give.

It depends on what you want to do.

You expect only 0 or 1 rank. SELECT INTO waiting for exactly 1 row. In this case, SELECT INTO may not be the best solution.

What exactly do you do if you return 0 rows?

If you want to set a variable with a NULL value and continue the treatment, Frank's response looks good, or else use the modular Billy approach.

If you want to "do things" when you get a line and 'status quo' when you don't get a line, then you can consider a loop FOR:

declare
l_empno scott.emp.empno%type := 7789;
l_ename scott.emp.ename%type;
begin
for rec in (
select ename from scott.emp
where empno = l_empno
and rownum = 1
) loop
l_ename := rec.ename;
dbms_output.put_line('<' || l_ename || '>');
end loop;
end;
/

Note that when no line is found, there is no output at all.

• Single user, working on both machines, best practical question

I use Dreamweaver at home and at work. I'm working on my sites only. I have just started working with DW and don't know the best practice to achieve. The way I do now is through a folder synchronized on both machines that hosts the site. The establishment is a local folder on the two machines that automatically syncs on the WWW. I created a site on my machine at home with a folder root for the site and the images and then created another site on my work machine and was pointing at the root sync folders. Is the best practice for this set to the top.

I guese that im afraid of is the feature of auto update of links and such to within DW.

Thank you!

I have the same configuration and DW Check In / Check Out feature works for me.

This requires a local copy of the site on home and work machines more copy remotely on the web.

I have check no matter what files I need to work, modify and then download and archive when I'm done.

DW manages everything.

• Server 2003 Best Practice

Research of best practices advice or links to them with regard to CPU and RAM settings.

IM create several images of OS from scratch. I was with my DC approx. when I started the second guess my config.

I have a Dell 2900 with Xeon E5405 (2.0 GHz Quad Core) processor and 16 GB of RAM. Using a 8 x 74 GB SAS disk in a RAID5 storage DataStore1 configuration. Datastore2 waiting for the snapshot storage.

I'm not going to run 3 or 4 virtual machines on the server to begin (domain controller 1 x 2003, 1xTerminal Services, Server 2003, XP 1 or 2). With a VM 2 or 3 additional possibly implemented thereafter. That would be based on Linux. Its possible (but unlikely) that I could experiment with Server 2008 later on the road

How many virtual processors should I appoint to the 2003 Server? 1? 2? 4?

Can I configure affinity to use the processor for DC 1/3 and 2/4 for TS Server?

I was counting on 2 GB of RAM for the domain controller and 3 GB of RAM for the TS and XP boxes. Is - this an exaggeration?

I understand that the drive of 20 GB for my domain controller will be adaquite. It will house NO data, IIS, etc. or printers. Essentially just an AD box for users of 50ish. Probably do 30 GB for the TS and XP vm.

Any help appreciated. I'm looking for someone who can tell me 'don't do this' expierence because "it could happen later."

-Chris

Start simple, then tweak as necessary. For the DC 2 GB mem is fine. In fact given the load that she could stand to 50 users it could probably do okay on 512 MB, but memory is inexpensive so no reason to not give him the 2 GB. Single processor

The TS server should be where you will load then start with 4 GB of RAM and increase as needed. Create two VMDK files for this drive 20 a 1 for the operating system and a disk (start with 20 GB you can grow the latter) for Apps and TS profiles. Start with only one CPU and only add additional processors if the CPU becomes a bottleneck.

2xGB RAM for XP systems is very good. 1 x CPU each. 30 GB for the discs is good

Multiple processors on a virtual computer can impact performance as often as aid, so do not use them unless you need it.

You don't have to bother with the processor affinity that this is an unnecessary complication in an ESX implementation that has more than enough power to manage the virtual machines you have specified will be hosted on it.

Not to do: place an Exchange or SQL local VM on the data store of this ESX host. You run a large RAID 5 LUN, which gives a lot of space but the poor performance, no problem with the virtual machines you have. Exchange and SQL need high I/O so you can virtual machines placed on RAID 1 + 0 LUNS preference of SAN storage.

• TDMS & Diadem best practices: what happens if my mark has breaks/cuts?

I created a LV2011 datalogging application that stores a lot of data to TDMS files. The basic architecture is like this:

Each channel has these properties:

To = start time

DT = sampling interval

Channel values:

Table 1 d of the DBL values

After the start of datalogging, I still just by adding the string values. And if the size of the file the PDM goes beyond 1 GB, I create a new file and try again. The application runs continuously for days/weeks, so I get a lot of TDMS files.

It works very well. But now I need to change my system to allow the acquisition of data for pause/resume. In other words, there will be breaks in the signal (probably from 30 seconds to 10 minutes). I had originally considered two values for each point of registration as a XY Chart (value & timestamp) data. But I am opposed to this principal in because according to me, it fills your hard drive unnecessarily (twice us much disk footprint for the same data?).

Also, I've never used a tiara, but I want to ensure that my data can be easily opened and analyzed using DIAdem.

My question: are there some best practices for the storage of signals that break/break like that? I would just start a new record with a new time of departure (To) and tiara somehow "bind" these signals... for example, I know that it is a continuation of the same signal.

Of course, I should install Diadem and play with him. But I thought I would ask the experts on best practices, first of all, as I have no knowledge of DIAdem.

Hi josborne;

Do you plan to create a new PDM file whenever the acquisition stops and starts, or you were missing fewer sections store multiple power the same TDMS file? The best way to manage the shift of date / time is to store a waveform per channel per section of power and use the channel property who hails from waveform TDMS data - if you are wiring table of orange floating point or a waveform Brown to the TDMS Write.vi "wf_start_time". Tiara 2011 has the ability to easily access the time offset when it is stored in this property of channel (assuming that it is stored as a date/time and not as a DBL or a string). If you have only one section of power by PDM file, I would certainly also add a 'DateTime' property at the file level. If you want to store several sections of power in a single file, PDM, I would recommend using a separate group for each section of power. Make sure that you store the following properties of the string in the TDMS file if you want information to flow naturally to DIAdem:

'wf_xname '.
'wf_xunit_string '.
'wf_start_time '.
'wf_start_offset '.
'wf_increment '.

• encoding issue "best practices."

I'm about to add several command objects to my plan, and the source code will increase accordingly. I would be interested in advice on good ways to break the code into multiple files.

I thought I had a source file (and a header file) for each command object. Does this cause problems when editing and saving the file .uir? When I run the Code-> target... file command, it seems that it changes the file target for all objects, not only that I am currently working on.

At least, I would like to have all my routines of recall in one file other than the file that contains the main(). Is it a good/bad idea / is not serious? Is there something special I need to know this?

I guess what I'm asking, what, how much freedom should I when it comes to code in locations other than what the editor of .uir seems to impose? Before I go down, I want to assure you that I'm not going to open a can of worms here.

Thank you.

I'm not so comfortable coming to "best practices", maybe because I am partially a self-taught programmer.

Nevertheless, some concepts are clear to me: you are not limited in any way in how divide you your code in separate files. Personally, I have the habit of grouping panels that are used for a consistent set of functions (e.g. all the panels for layout tests, all the panels for execution of / follow-up... testing) in a single file UIR and related reminders in a single source file, but is not a rigid rule.

I have a few common callback functions that are in a separate source file, some of them very commonly used in all of my programs are included in my own instrument driver and installed controls in code or in the editor of the IUR.

When you use the IUR Editor, you can use the Code > target file Set... feature in menu to set the source file where generated code will go. This option can be changed at any time while developing, so ideally, you could place a button on a Panel, set a routine reminder for him, set the target file and then generate the code for this control only (Ctrl + G or Code > Generate > menu control reminders function). Until you change the target file, all code generated will go to the original target file, but you can move it to another source after that time.
