BlackBerry smartphone GPRS or WIFI: which is better?

On another discussion, sali says:

I have a BB 8320. Can someone tell me if - because I find it very confusing - if I have to use the GPRS or WIFI setting if available. What is the best?

GPRS and Wi - Fi are two ways to get the data (especially e-mail and web). The main difference is:

  • the coverage is different (you'll have GPRS (across a carrier installed) that Wi - Fi (no matter where private individuals or commercial installed))
  • and the speed is different (Wi - Fi is 40 x faster).

Here are some things so that you understand why wireless is better: what are the maximum download speed, by network system (higher is better):

  • 00,014 Kbps: GSM
  • 00,056 Kbps: modem dialup (before ADSL and cable)
  • 00,056 Kbps: GPRS
  • 00,256 Kbps: EDGE
  • 00,512 Kbps: old ADSL modem
  • 08,192 Kbps: new ADSL modem
  • 10,000s kbit: Wi - Fi (depends on the device well)

On the Wi - Fi coverage, there should be a black and white photo WiFi indicating if there is a Wi - Fi connection nearby. (No), you can also buy several gadgets to detect Wi - Fi networks. Be aware that some Wi - Fi hotspots are free (McDonald, Starbuck), and others require fees (some airports). GPRS is available everywhere except maybe when you go to the countryside far from humanity (which can happen on some routes), but you would be extremely lucky to have a Wi - Fi and not GPRS.

There is an EDGE line in my post. EDGE is better than GPRS.

  • BlackBerry smartphones giving my wife my 9780

Hello, first post on this forum.

A hardware upgrade, I now use a Q10.  I give my wife my Bold 9780.  We have just received his SIM card from our supplier.

I wonder to get his phone to work do we just put new SIM card in the "BOLD" or do we need to reset the phone and erase all my information out there?  I don't know that she doesn't want all my information out there.

I have all the information from the old phone transferred to my PC and on the new phone.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the community!

I think you need to consider this as a standard of sell/buy operation, even if no money is involved. So, these steps should be performed:

  • BlackBerry smartphones turn off WiFi on Pearl 8120 on Orange

I want to be able to turn on and turn off the WiFi on my pearl. I am new to blackberry so I am struggling to find how to turn it off. I have worked on how to disable the Bluetooth, but not WiFi.

I want to turn it off, because I'm not a big user of access to the internet and I am trying to improve the life of the battery. Also, I guess I don't need WiFi to receive regular emails.

    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for that.

He has been to find the connection management option that has been the hardest part. There is an icon go on the home screen which then brings you to the display of connection management. Once I found it was easy!

The screens on the Pearl Orange network supplied appear to be different from the standard.

  • BlackBerry Smartphones BBM w / WiFi works only after changing SIM card not

    Hello

I need help (otherwise I would not write here). I have the Bold 9930. Until I left the States, my phone was working perfectly fine... I had an email, BBM, whatsapp, text, etc...

When I arrived in Haiti, I wanted to change my SIM card, then I would be able to use / have a number of Haitian. I don't have an international plan. When the guy put my the Haitian SIM, the phone asked my BlackBerry ID and password. I typed all the two, which were both correct, but he told me that it was a wrong password. The guy told me that the only way I'd be able to 'reset' from my BlackBerry ID would be to disconnect and to do this, it would eliminate all my pictures and everything. I didn't do that so I ended up buying a Haitian phone w / a Haitian SIM card.

At this point, I have two phones. An American with a SIM American (BlackBerry) and a Haitian phone with a SIM card that is Haitian.

When I got home, I turned on my American phone and its WiFi, but my BBM and emails were NOT WORKING! However, my Facebook application and the browser are both works perfectly well.

I restarted my phone several times since yesterday and nothing has changed. I checked this morning to see if it worked, but not luck.

So my question (s) / issue (s) is now:

    1. How can I get my BBM works again? (probably the most important)

    2. How can I get my email working again?

    3. is it possible possible for me to have my BlackBerry (US phone) work with my Haitian SIM card?

    Please, please, please, help.

Unfortunately, the device works as expected. Facebook, the wifi browser work fine on wifi but BBM and email REQUIRE a valid BlackBerry data Plan.

The only way to make it work is to have a BlackBerry data Plan on the Haitian Sim Card.

  • BlackBerry smartphones yet another WIFI problem

Just bought my daughter a blackberry Curve 8520. She has NO contract data and Internet disabled.

Configure WIFI on his phone, connects to the router fine but still have a login name of goods of dash (-).

Therefore, when she tries to go, she gets the message «Unable to connect to the internet...» »

We've travelled this and many other forums, we tried most of the suggestions and corrections, but NONE of them worked!

How are we supposed to use the WIFI feature?

We tried to contact our provider network that leads us quickly to Blackberry support! Rang them who told us to use this forum or to pay shedloads of money to have a technician help. Why should we have to pay a technician to solve a problem on a new phone?

    snikpoh wrote:

    (3) no data service is not on because we don't have a data contract - if it's on?

Absolutely, Services of data must be on. Otherwise, no data.

  • BlackBerry Smartphones Internet using WiFi possible without Mobile provider?

I have a Blackberry Bold 9650 with no Mobile provider (he previously had Verizon).  Is it possible to use the Internet on the Bold 9650 by connecting to my WiFi at home, or is it only possible if the phone has Mobile provider service active? I am able to use Internet on my iOS and Android phones using WiFi with no Mobile provider, but I get the impression that it is impossible on the Bold 9650.  I connect to my WiFi at home, but I get no Internet service on the phone.  I also want to upgrade the operating system from 5 to 6, but the BlackBerry Desktop Software says that the upgrade is not available, because I have no Mobile provider?

I was wrong.  I think OS6 for the 9650.  Without a data plan, it's a bit more involved to date, however.  You must wipe the device completely and then reload the OS from scratch.

You have to find a company that offers the update by download.  Here are the instructions.

    1. start by searching for your operator and the system operating file that you want to use.

    http://NA.BlackBerry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp

    2. it's not bad to do a manual of your device first, backup using the Desktop Manager > backup. Close at the end Office Manager and disconnect it from BlackBerry. You can get the BlackBerry Desktop Software here http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/

    3. download the OS from step 1 of the file on the PC then install on the PC by running (double click) the downloaded file.

    4. go into c:\program files Research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Also, check the following locations for the vendor.xml file and delete all instances of the file:

On Windows Vista/7, go to C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\Research in XML Motion\BlackBerry\Loader (where 'YOUR_USER' is your user name)

On Windows XP, go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER\Application is In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML (where 'YOUR_USER' is your user name)

5 use BBSAK from BBSAK.org and wipe the device (after doing a full backup), then after you get the 507 error (no OS installed) then go to the next step.

    6. plug the BlackBerry and double-click on "Loader.exe." It is located in c:\program files\common research in motion\apploader

  • BlackBerry Smartphones GPRS

    Hello

Please let me know how to use GPRS card to locate almost anywhere. Earlier, I have android phone and very easy to use GPRS android but the extent of the bb that I'm not able to use as I am new to Blackberry.

    Help, please

    Sylvie

You mean GPS... "GPRS" is a description of data network speed and has nothing to do with satellite tracking.

To use your GPS to your 9320, try using BlackBerry Maps on Google Maps. You can download Google maps on your BlackBerry browser to m.google.gmm

  • BlackBerry Smartphones BBM using wifi?

    Hi guys...

Question: How to use Blackberry Messenger using Wifi in Blackberry Curve 9220 (OS 7.1)?

Hello and welcome to the community!

Regardless of the path (for example, network operator data or WiFi), to use the BB exclusive services (including the BBM) requires a plan of adequate data from your provider. For generic information, see this:

You need to talk to your mobile service provider to see what data plan, you need (them) to enable the services you want.

    Good luck!

  • Problems with the WEB BROWSER blackBerry Smartphones, use not wifi network to open some Web sites

Hello I'm owner of BB BOLD 9900 OS 7.1... for the last two days I am facing a pretty annoying problem with the BB browser.

It means not affects the device... it just annoys me.

When I TURN ON my WiFi on my BB with the network carrier Sim already homepage active who has a Active on it and open the web browser BB, according to the website on which I open the web browser chooses between the internet Wi - fi OR internet BIS carrier which is weird. BECAUSE a default if the wifi is enabled, then the web browser MUST use internet wifi network carrier for navigation. YOU TUBE, FB and TWITTER.com all use my carrier netwrok to open bt soon I open BBC.com or CNN or any other site the wifi symbol appears on the right side and so it uses the wifi network... and disappears when I opened THE 3 SITES you tube FB n twitter.

My knowledge is that when you activate THE wifi network, the WEB browser is intended to USE the wireless internet, NOT the internet carrier

The next time I switchd off the the carrier signal, and then Turned ON one internet WI - FI and then opened the web browser of BB. so now all the opend website with wifi internet bt as soon as I open YOU TUBE or FB or TWITTER.com it post a comment... .that cannot visit the web page when the carrier is off. Please turn on the radio n try again... I mean IT SHOULD OPEN with internet wifi? WHY do network carrier sim to open the web page?

I have checkd my browser settings and they are default and also my wifi settings I have reset the... the problem still persists?

    any idea wats going on?

Please help is needed I'm annoyed about this problem...

mine worked... Let me know on urs... so now, the browser uses my wifi instead of my network provider when both are running...

  • Just a mouth call - RIM BlackBerry Smartphones can't happen to a better way than the battery yank 'fix '?

I've had the storm for 6 days now and I've removed from the battery 3 times.

I mean seriously - it seems to me that lame.  The storm of all machines should have a better system than the yank the battery, wait 15 seconds solution.  / Rant over.

Glad that RIM is not a car manufacturer...

There are a couple of different 3rd applications that perform a soft reset, which works like a battery pull.   Give them a try.

The one I use with no. complains is soft reset.   It is the first in this list of apps.

LINK to a large number of good Apps.

Soft Reset (takes about 30 seconds for the next confirmation screen) Yay for not having to remove the battery.

  • BlackBerry smartphones is possible Wifi on the 8310 Curve?

    Hello

I'm in the United Kingdom.  My service provider is O2.  They tell me that it should be possible to connect to my Wifi at home.  It doesn't seem to be an option to do this on my phone.  Is it because this model (8310) does not have this capability?  Or am I missing something?

    Any help appreciated,

    John

    Hello

some 83xx have wifi, but some don't. The 8310 does not, however, offer WiFi

  • BlackBerry smartphone email facility WiFi

I am trying to configure my e-mail account on a brand new Curve 8520 and get the message "your connection to the mobile network is turned on, but you are not in a wireless coverage area."

    I'm on Virgin Mobile.

I don't have any 3G coverage and the very weak signal GPRS (despite what it says on the Virgin site, but that's another story).

However, I have a very good WiFi signal, my broadband provider is TalkTalk.

I assumed that I would be able to set up my e-mail via the WiFi connection?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you in advance.

    Owen

Hi and welcome to the Forums!

Not all carriers allow wireless access to your settings of e-mail... you need to talk to them.

    Good luck!

  • BlackBerry Smartphones Mobile vs WIFI - who wins

If I'm in a WIFI and mobile space and have my BB, set both, win when going to the line or electronic control?  In other words, my expenses to mobile provider for data transfer, but the WIFI does not work.  If I send an e-mail wiith connected, I get charged?  Is thre a way to make WIFI win without turning off mobile

    Rolyb

    Hi @rolyb

Your device will enjoy least cost routing

In other words, given that Wi - Fi is available free of charge from your mobile data, as long as you have a Wi - Fi connection all activity data will use your Wi - Fi connection rather than the mobile network.

    I hope this helps!
