Boot from iSCSI SAN

Let's say I have a blade without a hard drive, I want to install ESXi 4.1 on and an iSCSI storage array connected to my ethernet switches to the North. Can I use SAN boot in this scenario to boot from iSCSI? I can't quite find anything definitive either way.

If it is possible are there restrictions on the type of card mezz blade would need? Ideally, we would use the adapter of VIC, but again, I don't find any details on whether or not this is possible. Is there a resource anywhere that lists the different adapters iSCSI features?

See you soon,.

Simon

the list of supported iSCSI today is as follows:

-----

None

-----

SAN boot is FibreChannel only now but I heard iSCSI is on the roadmap.

Perform a PXE for ESX boot works very well and I know quite a few clients who use it (but officially it is not supported by VMWare)

Kind regards

Michael

  • Boot from SAN with 4 HBAs

    Hello

What are the guildlines for boot from SAN with 4 fibre HBA.
Our HP Blades originally had 2 available Qlogic host bus adapters.  I have always chosen a boot on both device and the servers never had a problem starting.  Recently we add a second back-end connectivity map and associates of mezzanine on the HP to allow everything.  On the SAN and blade we show 4 HBAs.  Now when booting of servers, we have stuck in the bootloader GRUB.  This has happened on a server that has already been built and when we reinstalled.  What are the guidelines for booting from the San with multiple HBAs.  We use ESX 4.1.

    Hello

The general rule is that boot from SAN works on HBA cards in the lowest PCI slot.

I don't know what rules HP uses to translate slots PCI mezzanine cards.

  • ESXi 4 Boot from SAN?

I heard that booting from the San with ESXi is supported with the 4.0, but someone tried?  I'm looking at a fervent IBM DS3200 SAS for a small deployment I work on and I wanted to check it works for others before that I have try.

    Hi Mike,.

This works. You must configure SAN setting first in the BIOS. Then the Setup program will detect the LUN. other things are almost the same as the installation on a local hard drive.

  • ESX boot from SAN or Local HD

How will I know if ESX is configured to boot from the SAN or a Local HD?

and the doc says to unplug the cables of fiber... and if I don't then he used to find the partition...

Yes, it's a precautionary measure.  However, whenever you make a change of generation, it is best to reinstall from scratch, existing operating system upgrade.  This makes things work better.  So, when you do an installation, you have the option to select started SAN or Local.

With an upgrade anyway, it will upgrade the existing installation binaries and will not make changes anyway, so no need to disconnect the fiber, nothing will be reformatted during this step, but a NEW install Yes.

  • SMB ESXi with iSCSI SAN

I'm looking for make a SMB deployment for the clients of mine. The new features offered by 4.1 for SMB as VMotion and HA are now in their budget. I've seen DELl offering some broadcom with TOE and ISCSI unloading cards. I know that 4.1 now supports TOE cards, but these broadcom cards actually iSCSI HBAs or just TOE cards Motors iSCSI? VSphere 4.1 will support this card? Its much cheaper than buying full host bus adapters blown for a small business.

I'd go with the R710 mainly because of the experience with the model and how strong they are. You will save all the money using the R610, so you could spec on a solid R710 for the host. In addition, the R710 has four GB of NETWORK map (with the option of TOE on the four) and four open expansion for multiple network interface cards and other slot. With the R610, you will have only two expansion slots. So if you want to add more cards later (more than two), you must either delete that you installed to make room, or do the purchase.

I would always use the SAS drives on board to install ESX/ESXi on. You will save money by not getting NOT the HBA you can use to boot from SAN with the same (or similar) performance level. It also helps to isolate the questions when you're starting from local disks... I would go with a pair of 10 k / 15 k RPM SAS drives (2.5 "or 3.5", your choice there) on the RAID controller (using RAID 1 on them) support. Confirm with either your VAR or rep Dell to make sure that the controller is 100% compatible with VMware (or you check the HCL). They list the 146 GB drives in the Configurator (normal site of SMB) fairly cheap price.

I'd also go with processors Xeon E5620 (get a pair inside the host) so you'll have plenty of CPU power. Get as much RAM as you can, using not more than 12 sticks (multiple of six).

In fact, I have configured a R610 and R710 a using the SMB website... The R710 has the 146 GB (10 k RPM) drives the R610 has 73 GB 15 k RPM drives. The R610 comes out to almost $300 more than the R710. We're talking same memory (24 GB), TOE enabled on the built-in NETWORK interface, no additional NIC at build time (they would get another provider, getting Intel NIC, NOT of Broadcom), redundant power supplies, kits of rapid-rail (without the wire management arm), two-processor Xeon E5620, iDRAC 6 Enterprise (so you can do it all remotely, no need to use any KVM don't setup once configured the iDRAC 6). Both versions include the 5 x 10 hardware only (NBD onsite) support. I also put the hard drives RAID 1, so you have redundancy here.

Seen readers on board, for ESX/ESXi is on will also configure the host much easier and will not require something special on the side storage. Otherwise, you need to configure up to the MD3000i to present the solitary start-up LUN to a host for ESXi. Everyone that I spoke with who implements guests, always with local disks. Especially if you are looking to save the ~ 1 k $ the HBA adds to the build (not to mention the extra complexity to things). I was talking with some people in charge of a large IBM virtual data center not long there. They were forced to boot from SAN on their hosts fear. They were forced to do so by higher ranking people within the company. It was decided that because it sounded good on paper, it would be good in practice. Initial tests have shown how much pain he would be, and they were not happy about the extra work required so that it can happen. Until VMware clearly indicates that booting from THE SAN is recommended to local disk (properly configured on either) I will continue to use local drives for ESX/ESXi reside opon. Even in this case, we have a significant performance win by going to the boot of model SAN. Maybe when 10 GB is on the environment as a whole, it will make sense. As it is, you get new SAS disks that are 6 GB, everything in-house, and you still beat the trunk of the SAN performance model. In addition, you don't need to worry about someone making something accidentily to the LUN you are booting from...

  • Updated table controller drivers and Firmware at boot from a SD card?

I am in the process of upgrading vSphere 5.1 to 6.0.  All our ESXi hosts boot from SD cards and do not use table controllers local (they don't even have disks).  We had internal discussions on the need to update table controller drivers and firmware on our ESXi hosts if we do not use the table.  Those who are drivers update are firmware are concerned by the potential problems when the operating system scans the controller (either on boot for when looking for the new volumes) If firmware or drivers have been written for vSphere 4.1.  Those who are against the update drivers and firmware think that since there is no disc no problem.

    VMware has specific recommendations?

What do other drivers of controller of berries on systems that do not use the local drive (i.e. boot from SD SAN cards, Auto deploy,).

    Thank you.

P.S., We use servers HP Proliant DL and BL series, but I guess that would apply to any provider.

VMware and HP support told me that if the device should not be used, then the drivers and firmware will not be updated.  We played with the idea to disable the array controller in the BIOS, but finally we decided to stay with our standard process do not update table controllers.

  • ProLiant BL460c G7 iSCSI SAN boot

    Hello
I'm looking to start a single ProLiant BL460c G7 of our HDS iSCSI SAN and then install ESXi 5. The blade has no local storage. The SAN is already in use by the cluster of our production.  In the iSCSI SAN config guide it States to set up storage so your host has access LUNS. How can you do this if your host is not installed? How can I configure the LUN to only be accesed by my hosts IQN name when I don't have an IQN name yet? What I must first install ESXi? I'm obviously missing something any help would be great!

This is true, for this, but as your correctly point out if the OS is not installed how do you have a software iSCSI initiator - boot from an iSCSI SAN is supported only if you have an initiator of independent hardware installed in your ESXi host.

  • Newbee Q Boot from SAN image via ethernet?

    Hi all

No experience with this, where the question:

Not sure if this is possible - I said it is, but I'm skeptical...

We have an IBM DS4400 SAN FC (FastT700) implemented with connections to fiber to two boxes of host controller running windows 2008 with Emulex PL1000 cards.

We want to try and computer images virtual of a partition to boot on the SAN. Can we get VSphere (ESXi 4.1) on x 3650 servers connnect to the LUN via ethernet 'by' these machines to host FC connected?

I see the documentation on how to configure a connection to a San, where the host hardware contains CF cards installed. Y at - it software middleware (iSCSI) that will allow me to do that through the boxes 2008 hypervisor connected?

I suspect that this can only be done using the FC HBA in the 3650's connect directly via switch FC (zoning?) to the FastT700 controller?

Let me know if this is not clearly explained. I'm trying to understand it in my mind that I will along\learn.

    Thank you

ESXi 4.1 can boot from SAN - Fibre Channel, iSCSI and FCoE. If Windows servers can be configured as an iSCSI target, it should be possible. You must add the iSCSI target software. StarWind, iSCSIcake and others offer this feature. If the OS is Windows Storage Server while the ability is built into the OS.

  • UCS Boot from SAN

    Hello

I hope boot us from SAN, is UCS capable of automatically failing on OS start path, fabric case of failure? If the answer is NO, is there not a serious problem of booting from SAN?

    Thank you very much

Multipathing is applied at startup and data lun and is independent of the policy of the boot

I'm sorry that I do not understand where I misused the term automatic.

The policy of the boot is a static, very simple construction: first use the first path to start; it it fails, try the other?

CF Multipathing, regarding once the server is up and running: before the failure of tissue, you have 2 paths, after only one path to the LUNs (data and start-up).

If all uplinks to the North switch failure, or a whole tissue, UCSM report link to all NICs for/vhba of this fabric. (default setting for network control strategy-> Action on the failure of the uplink-> link down)

  • install ESXi on UCS to boot from SAN

    Hello

I have ucs and I need to boot from SAN

    I need to confirm something

When I was installing WindowsServer the UCS to boot from SAN. I have attached the iso drivers for the HBA driver so that the blade can detect the boot LUN.

Now, I'm going to install ESXi. Do you know if I need to use the iso as drivers for the HBA as with windows or ESXi detects this and will present me the boot LUN to start the installation?

We will use the ESXi, VMware no custom of Cisco

    Thank you

    Hello

    A major difference:

MSFT Windows has no drivers of enic fnic UCS preinstalled with the distribution of iso.

ESXi has, but most likely not one who demands that the UCS support matrix.

    See http://www.cisco.com/web/techdoc/ucs/interoperability/matrix/matrix.html

Therefore you install ESXi ISO of the distribution, and then you update the drivers of the enic/fnic

  • Boot from SAN

I started to work with Vsphere very recently, can someone guide on the basic operation to do during the installation of an operating system Win as Boot from SAN.

you ask you want to create a virtual machine and your plan is to install windows OS in it, but it is recommended to implement Boot from SAN?

    If that's what you ask

in this case, a SAN LUN that is obvious to the virtual machine as the RDM and you use it as your boot disk for the guest OS VM. I would recommend to still use the virtual disk for this purpose. I just listed a URL in the following list, which will give you use RDM cases.

    Hello community,

I'm trying to BFS on a blade IBM HS22 blade.

    The SAN is a DS4700...

Then, don't worry pour assign LUNS to the blade, I can mount ISO install ESXi4.1 and boot from it, do the deployment.

But I can't boot from it at the next restart... Finally half I managed on a blade, and not another (her twin), each with well hidden and separate LUNS.

Do you have an idea of how to set up the BIOS of the blade (and possibly of the QLogic card) pour booter from SAN?

On the blade or it works, and ben is totally by chance, in fact...

If you've done this, and BIOS the who HS22 blade, I'm interested to set up parameters pour un BFS correct!

    Thank you in advance.

  • ESXi 3.5 U4 - Boot from SAN?

    Greetings,

In the last ESXi 3.5 seemed to have a restriction in that the installation has failed for the start of the SAN.  For me, it would be the series Emulex LP11000 I work like SAN for ESX 3.5 boot but not ESXi 3.5.

Now that U4 is out, does anyone know if VMWare can now boot from SAN?

Currently, don't think so.  There are experimental new PXE boot support, if you want to have a centralized boot image storage location.
