Boot order

Hello

Its been a while that I've been on these forums (luckily I had no problem with my computer until recently, Dell has the worst customer service I have ever received) so I apologize if in the wrong place, or if someone wants a specific record of the computer itself.

Also, I apologize for my lack of technical terms, I understand my computer and how to use it, I have no jurisdiction, either.

It is essentially a question and not really a problem, I solved the problem I had, I do not understand why it happened.

I have an Alienware Aurora and I have absolutely no problem with him. I have also two hard drives - external, connected by USB as backups.

This weekend, I'm for a night at a parent tour went and returned, and discovered that there was a power failure. It's quite common for me, because I live in the country and its been taken by assault a bit where I live.

From the start of my computer, it worked absolutely fine for about five minutes, and then it froze completely. Confused, I CTRL + ALT + DELETE and restarted everything. I have to admit, I had a bit of a panic attack, and when the computer rebooted and seemed to work fine, I ran as well an antivirus scan and a scan for malware. (With the help of AVG and MalwareBytes respectively.)

Nothing has been detected.

The next day, the same thing happened. Start normal, everything is fine, no problems whatsoever and then after about five minutes, plenty of crash. When he started again, I defragmented my drives, checked all the dics, performed a Scan of CCleaner for questions and to clear my cookies and cache. I also ran another virus scanner.

Yet again, nothing was found.

I rebooted (especially to have made control of disk C: drive) and everything was absolutely perfect. I was pretty confident I had fixed.

Alas, Tuesday, we experienced several power cuts in a short period of time. When I started, it froze again and crashed. Wait for it to be reactivated as normal, you can imagine my horror when, after the usual Alienware of loading of the screen, instead of Windows startup, I got a black screen with a flashing underscore.

I tried everything I could find online. F8 was inaccessible: it did nothing. The Windows Advanced Options menu was not available, and that was the solution made of many forums.

I managed to run an assessment of the system which has found no problem. I opened the Installation Options and looked at Boot Order and discovered that my USB backups were somehow mixed in front, above and in front of my hard drive.

After having disconnected them and restart the computer, it worked, miraculously. I ran my antivirus, CCleaner scans, run, do another check of disk C: drive and added my readers mes lecteurs backup, do a check disk on them as well. Everything seems fine now.

Because I am a complete fool, when I got home from school (I live away from home for the first eight months of the year) when I put my computer again, I forgot to plug it into a surge protector and is plugged directly into the wall, after the black screen of death, I plug it into a surge protector and I hope this helps. I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I thought I should include it.

The question I have, (sorry for the backstory), this is what caused my boot order to change? I did a google search and the returned results really only addressed how to do manually, and not how it is done on its own.

Is it possible that'm surge my hard drive somehow, and that when you try to start the computer went to the better protected - external hard drives instead?

I would like to know because, well, first of all it bothers me that I don't know why and on the other hand, I would like to know how to avoid what is happening in the future.

Ideas, theories or concrete answers will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Surge and Brown-out can damage PC power supplies, motherboards or anything inside the PC. In addition, your external USB drives. Your software and Windows can also get corrupted.

Little expensive-power strip as surge suppressors are pretty useless. You need a real battery backup as APC or CyberPower. They run about US $ 125.

They have the transformer insulation inside (or similar circuit) that protects the machine.

If all that's happened is some startup commands got past autour, you have a lot of chance (the time).

    Help, please

    Hello

    Thank you for your response.

I assume you mean operating system based on GNU/Linux. In this case, the situation is somewhat different.

Well, as you know that we live in a world based on Windows (when it comes to personal computers) and most computers are designed with Microsoft and Windows in mind. That is why we (the users of Linux - I also use the operating system based on Linux on my home computer) may encounter some obstacles.

I don't have any experience with your computer model but I did some research and I found a few articles - their steps can help make you default GRUB a (not OS boot loader). As you probably know, GRUB is loaded by default booting of Linux (Ubuntu), and if it's by default you will be able to control with it, what boots first and she will control the OS boot/choice/etc...  :

  • Re: Satellite A210-10 has, crashes when you change the boot order

    Hello

I have a serious problem with my computer Toshiba laptop, Windows Vista 32-bit, clocked at 1.8 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, AMD Turion 64 x 2
There is only a single disk partitioned into two drives of 75 GB (C and E).

The problem is that whenever I enter the start menu (for boot from CD), or if I change in the BIOS boot order and restart, the computer hangs (power cut off suddenly).
So the only way to recover, is to connect the AC/DC adapter, wait 5 minutes and repeat. Then, everything lights up normally or launches of Windows system recovery, after what he will restart and work very well.

It would be important to know that I partitioned the drive to have 30 GB for installing Win7 later. The problem is that I've never tried to change the boot order before repartitioning, so I don't know if it has something to do with the problem or if it was there before.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

    Thank you

It seems that the issue related to the Bios. Have you tried to put update or reflash?

Maybe this has happened before, but you don't check.

    Hi all

Ive just bought a 2nd pavilion laptop in hand I can't reformat. My problem is the arrow keys of the keyboard, to the top to the bottom and right don't work only the arrow to the left. Someone else changed the boot order so I can't return it back to boot from the cd rom without arrows. As I am here in Australia I don't have access to the new keyboards. Can give you any advice. thnx in advance.

    Hello

One option would be to temporarily connect a keyboard external usb.

In addition, if you are trying to boot from an installation disc, I could do this via the Boot Manager menu, rather than set the boot priority in the bios menu because it is often ignored - you can do the following.

Insert the installation disc and the laptop shutdown .

Click next to the ESC key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Boot Menu, and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ).

Use the arrow keys to select the option of CDROM and press ENTER - if you are prompted to "Press any key to continue...". "- make.

    Kind regards

    Hello

I tried Ubuntu in my HP Envy X 360 15 - w002nx laptop.  After you uninstall using uninstaller os, single operating system Ubuntu is deleted but not the GRUB. It always shows in the UEFI boot order. How to remove Ubuntu boot order entry? I tried EasyUEFI and also bcedit.exe command. It removes the entry, but after restart iis to come again. How to get rid of this problem?

    I appriciate your help.

    Hello

Thanks for posting in the HP Support forum.

In order to achieve that you need, please read these articles and follow the steps.

You must first remove the EFI partition Ubuntu (actually, I think ths is what you see)

After that, you can remove the HDD MBR GRUB using bootrec.exe /fixmbr and /FixBoot Bootrec.exe (this is done using CD/DVD recovery Windows or with Windows 10 - >ISO)

These operations are a little risky and if done incorrectly can make your PC unbootable. Please, back up your most important data before taking any action.
