Boot XP, the XP CD and HARD drive failure

Hi all

I'm trying to fix a HP Media Center PC for someone, it runs Win XP MCE and after the POST, he returned to a blank screen with a cursor blinking _.

I came to the conclusion that the Master Boot Record is damaged, however, when I insert a CD in XP to try to repair the startup using the recovery console, this request "press any key to boot from the CD" then, after a key, the response "checking your system configuration" or something like that flashes on the screen for a while and then the screen turns white.

I took the HARD drive and run as an external drive to run chkdsk on the work and recovery partitions, the two discover ok. I also manually checked boot.ini, which seems to be in order from another system. I don't think that the user has tried to make strange changes to the system.

I tried the non-destructive recovery, it made no difference. I have not tried the destructive version, because to be honest, I believe that this will only fix the operating system, not the boot sector.

I'm really scratching my head over this one, so any help would be greatly appreciated please.

Thanks in advance

Gary

I went back to check your original messages but don't see any mention one by using the DVD recovery which should have been created when the PC was new.  In this regard and the new disk, if you use the DVD recovery, they will partition the drive, install the OS and make the Partition Recovery for you and everything will end.  Then you'd be back to day 1 - your computer would be like from the factory.

    Hello

I think that your partition on the HARD disk is damaged and so you cannot boot from the HARD drive.
In this case, the HARD drive must be formatted completely and then you could try to install the OS.

It seems also that your drive cannot recognize the CD bootable (WinXP?) and, therefore, it of not possible to boot from the drive.
Well, it really stupid s :_| situation really stupid!

However, did you try to boot from another CD? For example Microsoft Windows original CD?
If not I recommend you to do and eventually the reader will be able to read the CD.
If this isn't the case, so I think that the reader must be checked. Possibly it also corrupted s.

    Hello!

I m wondering that you want to upgrade this old notebook. In my view, that a new laptop would be a better solution.

On the CPU and GPU upgrade I can only say s is not possible and not Toshiba support. The GPU is soldered on the motherboard and t can be exchanged.

  • Recovery and hard drive failure

    System information:

    HP Pavilion dv4-2045dx

HARD drive: Seagate series ATA Disc Drive (7200 RPM) 320

    OS: Windows 7

After diagnosis that my hard drive has failed (the original supplied with the notebook), I bought a WD Scorpio 250 GB (5400 RPM) SATA to replace. I ran a diagnostic system on the HP splash screen and it found the new HDD very well. Because my old hard drive contained all the partitioned system recovery, I can't get it back using the player because it no longer works.

I was hoping to do a recovery of the system with the DVD, I did when I got the computer on the new drive hard, but during the process it has detected that the drive was much smaller than the original and would not allow me to proceed. I don't know what I can do now.

Do I need another HARD drive with the same requirements as that of the restoration of the system with the DVD, I made? Or am I just bad luck?

    Hello

It is a problem with the recovery discs do not like a drive smaller than the original.

However, it is an easy work around if you have (or can borrow) an installation disc Windows 7 at retail which is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - IE if your laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, it comes to the retail version accurate, you would need.

Use the disk to perform the installation, enter the activation key Windows located on the underside of your laptop when requested and when installation is complete, use the 'method of phone", described in detail in the link below to activate the operating system - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who want just a new installation of Windows 7 without additional software load normally delivered with OEM installations.

Additional drivers, you may need can be found here.

  • Restoration of the gross changes in the case of a hard drive failure

I use Syncback (not a disk imaging program) to save my image files and the LR catalog on external drives.

I don't have the problem, but failed to drive a friend got me thinking in detail about exactly how I could recover my images - in particular LR-edited raw files - if I lost the internal drive that stores my image files.  I always thought that I would just copy the folders of backup on the replacement of the failed drive.  Now I wonder if the LR catalog would then be able to find my images and apply all the changes I made to the raw files? Probably the replacement drive would be different from the original.  Is the hard drive brand, dimensions, partitions, etc., has something to do with the operation of the catalogue?

Not sure it's relevant, but I don't put my backup drives in my LR catalog.  Running LR 4.2 on Win 7.

I'm more concerned about the raws because I mostly shoot raw and did not convert many jpeg or tiff.  I tend to print directly from raw with LR files.   The thought of losing all changes in car disaster is daunting.  (It is perhaps a good reason to convert it into a format of the final image (Tiff or Jpeg) as soon as possible.

Can someone make sure that the copy of files from my backup on a disk new player (with the same letter as the old designation) is all I have to do to keep my precious changes?  If not, what else?

    Thank you.

If the new drive has the same drive and the same folder structure, then you should be absolutely perfect.  Obviously, you'll need a backup of the catalog too!  Brand, size, etc. will not matter in the slightest.

As a measure of precaution, just to make it really really easy, I would put the Panel files up as a hierarchy so that all folders appear under a single parent folder.  That, even if the drive letter changed, or the picture files ended up in a slightly different place, you very quickly link Lightroom to the new location.

If you are thinking of backups, just to make you your presets and other parameters saved too.  Losing these would not affect your existing fixtures, but they would be a pain to recreate.

  • That if I broke some of the pins on my hard drive connection?

    Original title: I need help

Hi guys, pls I need emergency assistance to solve the problem I have with my hard drive. I tried to fix the back of the hard drive on my system after I finished scan to check the virus outside, while I tried to plug the disk hard, part of the power with the intact pins connection point is broken, and since the system is not completely power the way which it used to. It feeds when the hard drive is not connected and as soon as I connect the HDD, it fuels and stops again. What should I do

    Hello, Brigitte,.

If the connect the power supply to the hard drive has been broken, you've lost the hard drive. You must buy a new one. If it is a connection between the power supply and hard drive, then a new connector is necessary. Anyway you must have it looked at by a qualified technician. It is also wise to not it lights up when the hard drive is connected in case damages pins short the system and cause you more problems.

  • Hard drive failure is imminent and must be replaced

    HP TouchSmart 610-1020 has

    i5 6 GB RAM 64 bit

    Windows 7 Home Edition Premium--> Windows 8

Hi there, since a terrible week for me I started to receive the error message:

Hard drive failure is imminent and must be replaced

only when am re - / from my PC.

I made a backup already a few days ago (space available was already 85% - did not much), run all those disk cleanup, defragmentation, analyze and verify programs and there was nothing wrong. I ran all possible controls and it had nothing recorded. I've updated / installed Windows 8 which works perfectly without any problems, no computer crash or that it is, but only sometimes receive a message saying that I need to run/shedule a back, etc.

As I already mentioned, there was no disk error, no other problems known but still get the message "hard drive failure is imminent and should be replaced" and crazy!

    My questions are:

    (1) what on Earth is happening, there is always a problem with touch smart PC; should he stay away all in a desktop PC and just buy older versions - separate screen and tour, etc.?

    (2) I have no problem and continue to use my PC but wonder what will happen; It will be down, it's just a false error message, what should I do?

    (3) if I have to take it to a service, what should I take care of?

Thank you for taking your time and wil appreciate for your posts about.

    Alp

    Hello

What has happened is that the CHIP system reports told you that your hard drive will fail little time. It is good that you have saved.  The fault lies not in all of your PC, but in a single component, namely the hard disk. You own your PC like one year standard warranty is longer.

You need to buy a hard drive with the following specifications. It of time to find your recovery disc as you need to recover your PC in its delivered State and then apply the upgrade 8 to win again. You can install it yourself or have done by a qualified PC store or from an HP Service Technician. The HP service center is the most expensive option.

You can avoid having to use the recovery disk and upgrade by a clone of your hard drive on a 1.5 TB external drive. You will be able to migrate the clone on the new diskette with a product commercially available as Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12.

  • I upgraded my card mother cpu ram and hard drive. I reinstalled windows xp home edition has got all of the updates. After 9 latest updates download and installtion went well, I restarted the computer, I get a blue screen and the computer restarts

I upgraded my card mother cpu ram and hard drive. I reinstalled windows xp home edition has got all of the updates. After 9 latest updates download and installtion was going well until I rebooted the computer and go to page window showing all the icons that I get a blue screen and the computer restarts its self and does not stop. How can this be corrected?

    Hi KevinRy,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    Unplug all external devices.

Try to start in safe mode. If you can start in safe mode, and then do a system restore to restore the computer to an earlier point in time.

Change the recovery settings to disable automatic reboot, if you are able to boot up to the desktop computer:

    1.

Right-click my computerand then click Properties.

    2.

    Click the Advanced tab.

    3.

Under Startup and recovery, click settings to open the Startup and recovery dialog box.

    4.

Clear the automatically restart check box, and then click OK many times necessary.

    5.

Restart your computer so that the settings take effect.

Now, when you are going to close and a fatal error occurs, you will see at least and it won't cause an automatic restart.

Please reply back with the error message you get because it helps us to resolve the error.

    Kind regards

I have all of my music stored on an external hard drive. On my old iMac, I have iTunes with all the songs on this hard drive organized or recognized as I like, with comments and play lists and track/song names and album names. How can I transfer iTunes as it is to the old iMac to the new MacMini while leaving the actual files of the song (> 2.5 to) on the external hard drive? In short, I want the old iTunes on my new computer, but the files of the song in the current HD thank you so much.

Hmmm...   Never tried, but I "think" it should work.   The reader will need to named exactly something on the new computer, as it was on the old.

    1. on the old computer, go to {user folder} / music/iTunes and move the files on the external hard drive.

    2. on the new computer in iTunes, go to Preferences > advanced and not select "copy of the file to the iTunes Media folder.

    3. always in this same window under "iTunes Media folder location", click on change.   Now select the location on the external hard drive, you have moved the files too.

    Files to be copied.
