  You are installing from a download, or you have the physical media?  I would recommend that we'll start by getting a new copy the installation files.  You can download Lightroom 4.2 for Mac from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5487.  Once downloaded please try to mount the image disk and then try to install again.

  LR4 works 10.6.8 and later, so yes, the LR4 has high specification compared to LR3.
