Can a virtual machine cause several discs in separate data stores?

I have 2 data warehouses, each on their own RAID array.  The intention was to put the VM OS in a store of data and secondary VM disks in the other data store.  For example, we would be a small OS disc in datastore1 and there will be a secondary drive that the OS could use for storing files or databases in datastore2.  However, once the first drive is created, and I'm going to create a second disk, I have no option to specify where we created/located.  By default, it is automatically in the same location as the first disc.  I see that I can move it to datastore1 2 using 'Browse the data store', but the virtual machine is not aware that the disk has been moved.

Is this scenario possible or each VM disks remain in the same data store?

You can specify a different data store for vdisks, but it is not recommended to place different vdisks in different data stores for the same VM. Things like vMotion and HA do not, or will not function properly if you do this.

IF you do not have other choice, but to do this, duing her 'create disc' step by adding a secondary/additional drive on the virtual machine, you will see the location section. This is where you use the Browse button, or enter the path, to the another data store where the disc files will reside.

I would advise against using the data stores different/double for the same VM. From a point of view logisitical she can make management a nightmare. I did once, and try to consolidate the various files in a single data store (later) was a bitch and a half...

  • Can a virtual machine cause several virtual disks?

    Hey all,.

I did some research but can't seem to find an answer.  I want one of my VM set up with multiple virtual disks.  Is it possible and if yes, how can I do?  I use the free version of ESXi.

Yes, you can simple add another hard drive to the guest.  Just go into the settings of the host, add hardware, and then select the hard disk.

  • Copy 700 GB of virtual machines directly to ESX 4.1 data store

    Hello community,

We have a bunch of VMS (~ 700 GB total) stored on a drive of 1 TB and we would like to copy them directly into an ESX 4.1 data store (located on an EMC Clariion CX4-120).

We do not want to transfer via the LAN - not an acceptable solution.

However, the Console of Service of ESX 4.1 does not seem to allow USB drives be mounted (I searched the Internet, asked some contacts of VMware, doesn't seem to be implemented/supported more).

    Possible solutions:

    1) we installed a W2K8 R2 physical server that has access to the San, but apparently, there is no reading + writing drivers for Windows (data warehouses) VMFS volumes

    2) perhaps to reinstall this physical box with a Linux who read + write drivers for VMFS volumes?

    3) reinstall the physical box with VMware ESX 3.x Service Console allows installation of USB drive? But it will be able to see the data created by ESX 4.1 stores?

Thank you for your valuable contributions.

  • Deploy multiple virtual machines on several hosts evenly?

    Hello people!

I wrote a small script to deploy many virtual machines on several hosts at random.

But I would rather deploy a virtual machine to each host in a table and then start over again until the number of virtual machines to deploy exhausted.  Distribution of the burden of deployment as evenly as possible.

Anyone have a suggestion?  Example of nested loops?

    PowerShell beginner, here.

    Thank you

One way to do this is with the modulo operator (%), something like this

    $numVMs = 11

    $tgtEsx = get-Cluster "Westcreek | Get-VMHost-name z420 *.

    1.. $numVMs | %{

    [New-VM-name 'Test $($_)' $tgtEsx[$_%$tgtEsx.Count - VMHost]

    }

  • I have a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses, and I need to move

Okay, I'm trying to reconfigure the storage on a cluster of ESXi to software development, and I fell on a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses.  Somehow, the user has configured this thing to have most of the VM files on the data store 5 while all the vmdk but the residence on the data store 1 boot drive.  He probably did it because of the size of the old warehouses of data and the many VMs older than his colleagues left sitting.  Well, now I just reconfigure data warehouses so that there is more usable space, but I can't move this machine a virtual so that I can reconfigure the rest of storage.  (For reference, the old warehouses of data have been implemented in 4 sets of three disks in RAID 3 and a set of four disks in RAID 3 with two drives hot spare.)  For the record: not my idea.  I am reconfiguring them now to be a set of 15 drives in RAID 6, divided into two LUNS on both controllers, with a hot spare.)

Well, now I need to figure out how to get this VM is spent at one of new data stores.  The data migration store feature does not work.  Any recommendations?

    Hi Dangingerich,

You can move the VMDK individually with the advanced functionality of storage vMotion allows you to ask the data disk on your new storage space and then have the OS disk track.

  • The research of virtual machines in several VCs

    Hello

I always connect with VCs several at a time looking for virtual machines (4 to 5 VCs).

Even if I found a virtual machine, I need re search using the name of the cluster or host name to find the name of VC.

So is it possible to get the virtual machine with the details in which VC he resides.

    I usually like this...

    Connect-viserver vc01 vc02, vc04 vc03-name of user-pass password

Then use get - vm to find the virtual machine.

We have no naming convention right to find the Victoria Cross using the Cluster name, the name of VM still host name.

You can get the vCenter like this

    Get-VM |Select Name,@{N="vCenter";E={$_.Uid.Split(":")[0].Split("@")[1]}}

  • You can hide virtual machine within a program?

I tried to play Sword of the New World on a virtualized xp platform.  I think I had it finally work because Direct X 9 works well and it didn't crash at startup.  However, it is an online game and safety online and measures anti-piracy captured that he was running on a virtual machine, and he said something to the effect of, "Sorry, you cannot run this program on a virtual machine."  I think that a program should not be biased against virual machines, after all, what have ever to it?  The program is called x-trap BTW.  I don't want to try to work around x-trap by disabling or other because it might compromise my account.  However, I would like to know if I can hide the fact that the game runs in a virtual machine of the game.

Any suggestion would be appreciated and we thank you in advance.

  • Virtual machines showing several times

    Hey guys,.

Anyone know why I see VMs appear repeatedly in vCOPS?  The only thing I could think is that cloning could cause that... but I was not cloning.  Any thoughts?  vCOPS Enterprise 5.7

It looks like you use a solution of mirror/replication such as MRS. vC Ops will pick up the placeholder of virtual machines in a scenario of MRS and fill them, causing duplicate scenario you describe. Are you running SRM or mirror/replication solution?

I want to look at the resources using the environmental component of the custom user interface. Check the vCenter IDs, "-vm", which will refine to you if it of a clone or not. Name is right, you have to look at the virtual machine single - and UUID to see if there are similarities, and if so, which. Also, check the date column creation to see when they were added, this will tell you when any chance happened which caused the resources "duplicated".

  • Migration of storage when the virtual machine has several data stores

How can I (or can I) use Storage vMotion on ESX4.0 U1 to migrate part of a virtual computer to a new data store?  I have a virtual machine with 5 data stores attached and move 1 data warehouses to a LUN of larger size.  What is the best method?

On the "Select the data store" window, click on the button "Advanced". You can specify the location of each VMDK and configuration files.

  • Virtual machine has several VDMK files - you wonder why

    Hi guys,.

I have a single large 100 GB Windows 2003 R2 Oracle DB Virtual Machine [name = set].  Everything has been fine for years.  For the past 3 months we used IVMS to break the NFS volume, and everything was fine.  Then, for some reason, we started running out of space and have to increase the NFS volume by nearly 100 GB.  An inspection further, I note that this VM resulted, for some reason, some new files in the FOLDER of the virtual machine.

    My question is:

How can I get rid of these extra files from the VDMK (00001 and 0002), it is 86 GB, how the hell did this happen?

I removed to stuck VMWARE snapshot that took awhile!

Here is an overview of the files in the directory of the virtual machine:

    MIS.vmx

    MIS.vmsd

    put. NVRAM

    VMware.log (also newspapers 90,91,92,93,94) about 50 KB

    set - snapshot222.vmsn

    vmxf put

    set - 25d0109e.hlog

    set - 25d0109e.vswp (1 GB)

    MIS.VMDK - 105,63600 KB

    put - 000001.vmdk - 90,347,230 KB

    set - 000002.vmdk - 42 236 KB

Can someone help me, I have referred to in this article, but I don't think that it applies:

    http://www.VMware.com/support/gsx3/doc/disks_fileinfo_gsx.html

Yes - but do not delete the files manually, of course. Use snapshotmanagers function 'clear '.

  • How can ping virtual machine on VMware Server external network?

In the Vmware infrastructure products you can can be crazy from the outside through their individual networks connections, which is a good thing... lol

How this is possible on VMware Server when guests use the VMnet8 network that uses NAT?

In many scenarios, the use of bypass is prohibited due to the policy defined at the level of the external switch, but it is still necessary for the basic functionality of ping. Otherwise, how they would be able to know if a virtual machine is actually up to who answered the questionnaire on the network without entering actual connections to such hosts?

You're right - that's how NAT works (whether via a service such as the VMware NAT service software or a hardware router/firewall NAT).  All computers behind the NAT server are hidden from the outside world (unless you map specific ports to the specific IP address of a computer)... they are so NOT to pings from the outside.

  • You can run virtual machines created by merger in other operating systems

If I install Windows 7 as a virtual machine using Fusion OSX and store the virtual machine on an external hard drive, it is possible to connect this drive in a computer running Windows or Linux and run the same virtual machine using something like VMWare Player? The idea is that if users have a Mac at home and a PC at work, we welcome with a virtual machine instead of a laptop.

    Thank you!

OVF is a small and open format mainly used for the transport of virtual machines. After you deploy it, you will work with a normal vmdk, etc files (as far as I know... but I'm still learning new things here in this community)

Now, performance, which is the other discussion. VMware has proved to be more solid and trusted platform... and for Windows VMS, I saw better than other hypervisors performace. It would make a difference, it will depend on how intense are your processes and the ratio of group you want to reach.

To facilitate the management, security and stability, I highly recommend to use VMware. Performance should be better too, but it's harder to see sometimes. For a scenario of development where the snaoshots are very used, VMware will make a big difference.

  • VCenter can create virtual machines Windows 7 x 64?

After creating a new virtual machine and then loading an ISO file on the cd to start it appears as if the operating system loads correctly until you get to the point of restart the machine. Im hoping just to confirm that vCenter Server takes in charge the creation of Win7 machines currently.

I was able to do a P2V of a Win7 x 86 box conversion but it is the first attempt, I did build a x 64 VM from scratch in the new agent of vSphere. Do you mean that the ESX hosts must be upgraded before it works?

Guests must be upgraded, to ESX 4.0 U1 until you have a supported configuration.  32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 to work on ESX 3.5 hosts is possible, you will just not supported with it.  It really comes down to whether or not you need a client supported OS.

  • All virtual machines fail to be recovered on a store of data due to a VM invalid

I see this error for each VM configured on this particular volume when I run a test:

Error - machines virtual "MBRDBPRDRestore1120" who are not protected by this protection group use 'VM_1ALB_T1_VOL1' data warehouses located in this protection group.

This virtual machine is a copy of a virtual machine that is in the protection group, but it has been restored to a different volume with a different name.

When I browse the data store I'm not find all files that look like they are associated with restored vm.

    Any ideas?

  • I have can´t several extensions to my data store

    Hello

I extend my logic unit number and I have a new analysis on my ESX´s and I can see the new space, but when I try to add a measure (now I have still 4 degrees), West nothing available for the scope. How can it be posible?

    Thank you

    Hello

Before going further, please do a good backup...

Yes, I extend my LUN, then I rescan and can see the new size, but I can´t extend my data store to this space...

That is right. You can't do that if you add a new partition to the first LUN. You can add a partition with fdisk. Once you add the partition, you can then see that partition and add it as a point and formatting in a VMFS.

Just extending the LUN does not have as much as you cannot extend VMFS without using extensions with VI3. So using "fdisk" in the CLI to create a new partition using the free space. Once you have the partition of type "fb" you can then use vmkfstools to formatting in a VMFS, and then add it as a measure to the existing VMFS.

If you are not comfortable with vmkfstools or fdisk. Then I would decline the logic unit number once more to its original size if you can remember it EXACTLY, then create a NEW LUN, and adds the new LUN as a measure. If you do not remember the old EXACT size then look at the ALTERNATE.

ALTERNATIVELY, you can create a new unit number logic of appropriate size and SVMotion/migrate all content for the new LUN of the former then destroy the old ONE. It really is a much less intrusive method.
