Can I download can imagine them in the data store when the Virtual Machine is running

or do I have to stop the Virtual Machine first and then download?

Rgds

Chris

If you want to have a consistent state, Yes.

If you just need a consistent state to the accident, you can create a snapshot, download the base vmdk files and then validate once again the snapshot operation.

You cannot download files in use (except the read-only).

You can edit vmx file while the virtual machine is running? And is it safe?

    Hello

Moved to the forum of the Virtual Machine and the guest operating system.

If you edit the VMX while the virtual machine is powered on change is not levied until the power off then power on (not reboot) and there is a good chance that the change will be deleted when turn you off the system. So it is not safe to do so.

  • Physical disk how can I add in the Virtual Machine?

I am trying to set up a network of storage, but I discovered it is there is a limitation for the addition of physical hard disks in the virtual machine.

I have 1 virtual hard disk for the operating system (SCSI), an invited so I try to add more than 4 disks, but it should not add more than 3. They showed that (IIRC).

I try to add 4 x 1 TB as physical hard disk in virtual machine hard disks, but it says that I must remove one to add.

    1. in the settings of the Virtual Machine, is there a difference between (SCSI) (IDE) and why are the physical disks (IDE)?

    2. What is the limitation of total hard drives under the VM settings, four?

    Johwwy

physical disks can be detected such as IDE or SCSI - depends on the drivers used by the host

SATA in ide-compat mode is used as IDE

SATA AHCI mode is detected as SCSI

It is possible to rewrite the descriptions after their creation.

It is a little advanced - see my notes

    http://sanbarrow.com/VMDK-basics.html#changeadapter

for a start, it may be necessary to also change the geometry... ask first so uncertain.

I think the limit of physical disks that can be attached to a virtual machine is 64 = 4 x 15 - scsi and IDE 4-disc drives

  • Wrong message 'VMware Tools can be updated' for the virtual machine within ESXi 4.1

These VMware tools in my guest operating system keep on the list "VMware Tools can be updated" and the yellow exclamation point.

Host operating system is ESXi 4.1.0 build 348481

VMware Tools version is 8.4.8 build 491717

It is not on the files with the extension.001 as described in the following article

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2001382

I checked and there is no file with this extension.

I think that VMware tools is unable to read or to compare the correct numbers.  Or is there another reason?

    Reply to my own post:

The answer, in fact the procedure, is inside this article:

    https://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-31365

For some reason VMware Tools is not installed correctly (for example files from previous versions are left inside the hard disk).  So I have to do a manual cleaning before you reinstall the tools.

  • Can not put on the virtual computer after Storage VMotion

I use the snap for the customer VI do some storage vmotion, where I can best use our space on our tables. I have a particular virtual machine that I transferred autour storage that has a total of 3 VMDK, all on separate LUNS. As soon as I moved them all in the right place, where I wanted them, I can't turn on the virtual machine because it says there is no space available on the device. I am trying to boot the machine with 4 GB of memory, the boot LUN more than 400 GB free on it. The other two LUNS have 225 MB, and 192 MB of free space. I can only start the machine if I change the memory of 192 MB or less. I know that problems with the file exchange and memory overhead, but this virtual machine has always run with these two LUNS with very little space. I can only assume it is somehow related to the storage vmotion. The pagefile is set to store the virtual machine and I'm still having the problem. Need help.

Storage vmotion the VMX file of the LUN with more space (easier) or add manually a config parameter (settings, Options, general, settings) sched.swap.dir = / vmfs/volumes/DS/Machine

(where DS and Machine related to your environment).

  • When a snapshot is complete, so I can start to make changes to the virtual machine?

When I take a snapshot in merge, a progress bar appears in the window of virtual computer, then disappears in a few seconds.

But a picture of a clock also appears on the Fusion icon in the dock. Only the clock takes a minute or two to disappear.

What process is the clock?  What is the take a complete snapshot?  When the progress bar disappears, or when the clock disappears?

Can I safely begin to make changes to the virtual machine, I want to be able to restore, immediately after the progress bar disappears?

Or, it is more prudent to wait to make changes until the clock disappears?

    Thank you

(The progress bar and the clock appear in my Fusion 3 that I use always happy... I don't know what appears in more recent versions).

While the stopwatch turns, Fusion is busy writing the snapshot to disk, so the performance of your comments and your host could be reduced.

As long as the performance isn't an obstacle, you can continue to use the virtual machine while the snapshot is taken.  Merger will ensure that the snapshot includes the exact state of the virtual machine at the moment, you started the snapshot: nothing of what you are doing inside the guest, while the snapshot is in progress does not affect the State of the socket.

    See you soon,.

  • Connect physical hard disks to the virtual machine (and leave the data intact)

    Hello

I'm looking to virtualize a SOHO headless server, that I use mainly for secure file storage.

Currently, the system runs Linux installed on a small disc and has two drives 1.5 TB, used exclusively for data, in a cluster of ZFS mirroring. (I use the ZFS-fuse Linux-based application).

I want virtualization for two reasons. One is to make administration easier and safer - avoid having to connect a keyboard and the physical monitor to the box from time to time. The other is that the machine is a bit more powerful to handle the load, and I'm hoping to make it work on other, more challenging tasks.

Now, there is a catch. These discs are as highly important. I mean the data on them. What I need is to convert the current Linux system to a virtual machine, or re - install Linux on a virtual machine (don't like that), then connect the physical disks to the virtual machine as if they were actually connected.

I certainly don't want to vmware touches those disks somehow.

I've read the documentation, but I'm a noob when it comes to server virtualization and system engineering and don't quite understand if this is possible or not. These discs are not a SAN, they are physically connected to the server, I want to install vSphere on. (Of course, I'll log out when I run the setup of vSphere. But I need plug them again later, and they need to be sure that vmware will leave them alone and pass them to the virtual machine transparent.)

    Sigmoid wrote:

Oh yes, the cluster mirrored ZFS. It is essentially a software RAID type thingie.

    http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/ZFS

A material, or the point of view of virtualization, it appears two hard drives with a single huge partition on each that is not transparent to anyone, except the implementation of ZFS.

OK, means that you can break the RAID, connect the drives to different host and configure RAID once again, right?

    Let's do it this way

    1. We will need a disc player more for VM, cause on flash, we install ESXi
    2. I will share ZFS :-), all you need to do with that before you install ESXi
    3. make the BACKUP!
    4. Disconnect the data host drives
    5. install ESXi 4.1 U1 free version on flash
    6. Download the site VMware vSphere client
    7. Connect the VM disk to ESXi
    8. customer help create the virtual machine and install the OS on it
    9. stop the virtual machine and esxi
    10. connect DATA drives to the ESXi host
    11. begin to ESXi
    12. See how to add RDM on youtube, after client use, change first hardware VM--> add a new hard disk--> choose Raw Device Mapping--> (physical or virtual) mode--> store it with folder VM - FACT
    13. Start the virtual machine, now your VM should see both drives, with good data course :-)

  • Share the virtual machine created in VMWare Player

    Hi all

I created a virtual machine Ubuntu based using VMWare Player. The goal of this virtual machine is so it can be used for demonstrations on our societies SaaS based appliction. So basically the image works fine now, I have a few questions:

    1. what format should I send them the virtual machine? (i.e. can I just compress the virtual machine directory)

    2. If open the image in VMWare Player if he invites asking them 'have you copied"/"Moved"the virtual machine? Can I avoid this?

    3. it will work on their equipment?

    Any help appreciated.

    See you soon

    I can help you with your questions;

    1. what format should I send them the virtual machine? (i.e. can I just compress the virtual machine directory)

Zipper the VM directory should work correctly, it will just extract somewhere on their machine to run it.

    2. If open the image in VMWare Player it will ask asking them

"You copied" / "Moved" the virtual machine? Can I avoid

    This?

To the best of my knowledge, you can't avoid it, and they should probably answer "copied" in the situation you describe.

    3. it will work on their equipment?

It's a pretty loaded question.  Obviously, it must be run the Intel instruction set and have a Player version available for their OS.  I ran with success of virtual machines on a laptop Centrino 1.6 GHz single core, but startup performance left a little to be desired.  I think that a minimum of 1 GB of memory for a host running XP or Linux, probably at least 2 GB for one of the more recent Windows operating systems.  More memory would be better, but it will probably work with what I suggested.  Of course, player must be installed on these hosts.  Then make sure that the parameter memory your VM is as small as you can reasonably do.

I have provided virtual machines by providing copies of the record, and they worked very well.  In my case, I created my VMs on my Mac with Fusion, but then run it with Fusion or player.

  • VMware workstation and ReadyNAS to store the virtual machine

    Hello

I just bought a Netgear Readynas box for home (Readnas RND2000 XRAID SIN) and it seems like a big box to keep a backup of my critical data and flow data and video music.

Now that will take about 100 GB in space and I'll always have weird to play with 400 GB and it made me think if I host all my test VM I created using VMware workstation, for the moment I use a local computer, but its lack of disk space, I tried to put the virtual computer on an external drive and performance is ok on it as well but for me , it would be ideal if I could store them on the readynas and open them through VM workstation.

Of course put it on a NAS box could be problematic, has anyone tried this on one of these boxes ReadyNAS? its probably not designed for this type of data and traffic, but if anyone has got, it works, I would be interested to hear comments.

One of the potential problems in my view is I'll be going through a wireless router with a 4 port 100 mb go and see that as a problem, it replaces a gigabit switch would make a huge difference, or would it still slow?

I would appreciate any advice on this.

    Thank you

I'll guess that your external hard drives are USB.  In this case my answer is Firewire.  I run several of my virtual machines to external Firewire drives very good success.  While I ran a few virtual machines from USB, USB just isn't the sustained performance of Firewire.  This is the case on my Macbook Pro and my HP Pavilion (with built-in Firewire.)

That said, even if I don't have any experience with the ReadyNAS, I use a Windows Server as NFS storage to an ESX Server.  The gigabit switch is almost a necessity.  Possible about 100 MB, but significantly better on gigabit.  In addition, the link of the ESX to Windows NFS is on a physically separate local network segment, so I don't have any problems with the network traffic slows down the virtual machine.  I have not tried Workstation with storage NFS, as I always got Firewire on all my machines so I kept for most of the virtual machine from the network.  YMMV, of course, but I suspect that you will have to keep the rest of the traffic network in mind if you can not create a separate network for NFS storage.  (for example: no internet surfing on the host while the virtual machine is running.)

  • Connect to a service running on the Virtual Machine

    Hello

I installed the server virtual computer on a Windows Vista-based computer. I have created a virtual machine and configured the Windows XP operating system and certain services is installed.

I can't do a ping to the host Vista the XP virtual machine. But I'm not able to ping for the service that is running on the Virtual Machine host to Vista XP. I have configured the virtual machine to run on the HostOnly network.

    What could be the problem/fix?

    Kind regards

    Knockaert C

If you are pinging by IP address then it work should absolutely check that the Windows Firewall in XP guest does not prevent the ICMP packets that is located on the tab 'Advanced' the Firewall Control Panel applet. No changes to host files is required. What type of network you choose - bridged, host only or NAT. If fulfilled, VMware is fill protocol running on this NETWORK card in the home? If one of the other two, is their virtual network adapters (VMnet *) in the active host and IP associated with them?

  • The mouse is confused - almost impossible to use the virtual machine more...

    Hello

I use a number of VMWare (6.0.7 build-2844087) sessions player on my i7 quad core Windows 8.1 system for separate processes.  I don't do anything in my main boot environment is nice and clean.  I have a player for web browsing, one for email and a few others (game, video editing, etc.).  This separation gives me an easy backup/restore option for any computer virtual as well as prevention 1 VMS are attacked/infected/hacked/etc most I can lose, it is what is in this virtual machine.

Something broke all of a sudden.  I don't know if it was the last update for VMware tools or some change made by windows update or maybe even a setting that I did.

But now, my mouse is very confused.  If you look at the picture, you can see 2 pointers.  The bottom is my VM. The top appears with the VMWare container think that the mouse should be there. And the relationship between the 2 pointers constantly changes.  So I can select something in the virtual machine, but the tank of the virtual machine can think the mouse is on the VM bar and when I click the virtual computer closes, presentation of the changes of the screen, minimize, etc..

    badmouse.jpg

I did some research.  All of my text is set to the smallest size (the most common fix I found.)  I have re-installed VMWare tools.  I tried to change the mouse settings in my VM and the primary host environment.

It's to the point where I can't click without 1st checking the top of the window on my main screen or risk losing work, etc..

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    Thank you

If anyone is interested in distance, I finally solved the problem.  My guess is that I could have reinstalled the main operating system.  Instead, I've upgraded to 10 Windows and then installed Player 7.1.2.  On the plus side, no more problems with 2 pointers mouse with one randomly showing where and when he wanted.

On the negative, I always have to press Ctrl-Alt to get to the VMWare bar at the top of the window.  But it is a small price to pay for now to be productive again.

FWIW, my guess is that upgrading to 7.1.2 is really what makes the difference.
